:00:04. > :00:07.Tonight with Annabel Tiffin and Roger Johnson. Our top story:
:00:07. > :00:17.Spotted out shopping - police release new pictures in the hunt for
:00:17. > :00:18.
:00:18. > :00:22.a murder suspect. If you look at the images, you are
:00:23. > :00:26.looking at a man who looks dishevelled so I think he is living
:00:26. > :00:30.hand to mouth. Michael Cope has been on the run for almost three weeks.
:00:30. > :00:32.Also tonight: New hope for Jackie - how the North West's leading the way
:00:32. > :00:35.in the search for a lung cancer cure.
:00:35. > :00:40.Heat wave warning - as the region basks in sizzling temperatures,
:00:40. > :00:43.experts warn of the dangers of too much sun.
:00:43. > :00:47.We're two weeks into our hottest spell in years and there's no end in
:00:47. > :00:50.sight. I'm live at Lyme Park with the latest.
:00:50. > :01:00.Is it Toni time again? Can Everton's Duggan fire England into the
:01:00. > :01:01.
:01:01. > :01:06.European Championship quarterfinals tonight? And it is another crew
:01:06. > :01:12.obviously hot day, so hard I am taking a dip in the lake with Mr
:01:12. > :01:20.Darcy. Join me in Cheshire to find out why Mr Darcy is back here at
:01:21. > :01:24.Lyme Park. First tonight, police have released
:01:24. > :01:28.new pictures of murder suspect Michael Cope, who's been on the run
:01:28. > :01:33.for almost three weeks. He's seen in the CCTV shopping for food, the
:01:33. > :01:36.first time he's been spotted since he disappeared. Police want to speak
:01:36. > :01:40.to the 28-year-old in connection with the killing of mother-of-two
:01:40. > :01:43.Linzi Ashton who was found dead at her home in Salford at the end of
:01:43. > :01:53.June. Peter Marshall is outside Greater Manchester Police's
:01:53. > :01:59.Headquarters now. This could be a significant moment
:01:59. > :02:04.in this murder enquiry. Since Linzi Ashton was found almost three weeks
:02:04. > :02:09.ago, there have been unconfirmed sightings of the chief suspect
:02:09. > :02:16.Michael Cope. Now it appears he has broken cover. We know where he was
:02:17. > :02:22.in July 40. The man at the centre of an incentive murder hunt goes
:02:22. > :02:27.shopping. Michael Cope captured on CCTV at a convenience store in
:02:27. > :02:37.Hindley. He picks up food to keep him going one on the run. He went
:02:37. > :02:46.straight to the cash machine, and withdrew some money and he got lots
:02:46. > :02:52.of food, 14 worth of food and then he checked his bag twice. Michael
:02:52. > :02:56.Cope, who is 28 and from Salford, is wanted in connection of the murder
:02:56. > :03:01.of his former partner Linzi Ashton. She was found dead at her home in
:03:01. > :03:07.Winton on Saturday, June 29. She died from pressure to her neck and
:03:07. > :03:13.multiple injuries. At a news conference, police were confident of
:03:13. > :03:18.finding Michael Cope. The amount of money we saw being taken out of the
:03:18. > :03:22.cash machine last week, the amount of food, is only a small amount. If
:03:22. > :03:29.you look at the images we have released, you are looking at a man
:03:29. > :03:33.who looks dishevelled and is living hand to mouth. They believe he is
:03:33. > :03:40.familiar of canal pathways and he may have spent time around waterways
:03:40. > :03:46.in Hindley. Detectives say information from the public could be
:03:46. > :03:51.vital. Look at outbuildings, sheds but I would say to the public, I
:03:51. > :03:55.consider this man dangerous so if you see him, ring the police
:03:55. > :03:59.immediately. The case has been referred to the Independent Police
:03:59. > :04:03.Complaints Commission after it was revealed Linzi Ashton reported
:04:04. > :04:09.assaults by Michael Cope before her death. The police officer saying he
:04:09. > :04:14.is believed to be dangerous, what have the police have to say to
:04:14. > :04:19.anyone in the area worried about this man being a large? The police
:04:19. > :04:24.want to warn people but do not want to panic people. The detective
:04:24. > :04:32.superintendent said, we understand developments may have on people but
:04:32. > :04:39.I assured them we have a dedicated team of detectives who want to find
:04:39. > :04:44.Michael Cope safely. He also says there is a 25,000 reward for any
:04:44. > :04:48.result that leads to conviction. Next tonight, it's the deadliest
:04:48. > :04:51.form of cancer and the least understood. But now Manchester is to
:04:51. > :04:55.play a key role in unlocking the secrets of lung cancer in the search
:04:55. > :04:58.for a cure. Experts are taking part in a world-first 14 million study
:04:58. > :05:01.launched today to find out how lung cancers become resistant to
:05:01. > :05:11.treatment and how therapy could target each patient's unique form of
:05:11. > :05:13.
:05:13. > :05:17.one of the country 's biggest killers but lung cancer can take
:05:17. > :05:23.time to diagnose and by then it may have entered the bloodstream. That
:05:23. > :05:27.has happened to Jackie Mills, she is now cancer free but there is a
:05:27. > :05:32.chance of returning. It is constantly on your mind on a daily
:05:32. > :05:38.basis, is it coming back? You grab at everything, every hope that you
:05:38. > :05:43.can. All the studies that they are doing, you will commit with open
:05:43. > :05:52.arms. 2000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer in greater Manchester
:05:52. > :05:56.each year. The mortality rate is higher than the England average. At
:05:56. > :05:59.the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research they hope to change that.
:05:59. > :06:05.Cutting edge technology will analysed tumour samples before and
:06:05. > :06:09.after surgery to see how the cancer changes and avoids treatment.
:06:10. > :06:13.know what the next step will be for the tumour and know what the best
:06:13. > :06:19.treatment will be at every stage of the progression because we know the
:06:19. > :06:24.tumour changes with time. This study will give an unprecedented insight
:06:24. > :06:30.into lung cancer but it is also ground-breaking because experts will
:06:30. > :06:35.be working with six other centres across the UK for the first time.
:06:35. > :06:40.The Tracker project also involves the University Hospital of South
:06:40. > :06:45.Manchester and the Christie were Dr Fiona Blackhall treats patients.
:06:45. > :06:50.Lung cancer is lots of different diseases, different types of cancer,
:06:50. > :06:59.each with its own genetic make up and we want to match the right
:06:59. > :07:03.treatment to that genetic make up. Jackie is doing everything she can
:07:03. > :07:09.to ensure her cancer will not return but if it does she hopes the study
:07:09. > :07:12.'s findings could help her beat it again.
:07:12. > :07:16.Other news from around the North West now and the Royal Liverpool and
:07:16. > :07:19.Salford Royal will be among the first hospitals in the country to be
:07:19. > :07:23.assessed under major changes planned by the government. The Chief
:07:23. > :07:26.Inspector of Hospitals wants to send in a "small army" of staff to try to

:07:28. > :07:38.care put Tameside and East Lancashire Trusts into special
:07:38. > :07:44.measures. The way the CQC is now responding is great. The public want
:07:44. > :07:48.to have confidence in the NHS and they rightly should have and these
:07:48. > :07:53.inspections are part of building the confidence and providing open
:07:53. > :07:56.information back to the public about the state of our hospitals.
:07:56. > :07:59.Meanwhile, Cumbria police say they will not be investigating the Care
:07:59. > :08:02.Quality Commission over alleged failings to act on a report on the
:08:02. > :08:05.Morecambe Bay Hospitals Trust, published in 2012. The police say
:08:05. > :08:09.any failure to act had "no consequences" for the provision of
:08:09. > :08:12.health care in Cumbria. Proposals that could mean the
:08:12. > :08:15.closure of three council day care centres for elderly and disabled
:08:15. > :08:19.people in Manchester have been considered by the City Council
:08:19. > :08:23.today. A series of recommendations were given this afternoon and a
:08:23. > :08:29.final decision will be made next week. Seven centres could be cut to
:08:29. > :08:33.four to save 1.7 million. Police are appealing for witnesses
:08:33. > :08:36.after two women were attacked by a dog on the promenade in Blackpool.
:08:36. > :08:40.The attack, which happened last Monday evening, left one of the
:08:40. > :08:44.women with horrific injuries to her leg. The owner fled from the scene
:08:44. > :08:52.with the dog, which is believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier or

:08:55. > :08:58.Queen's Guide to The Sands, Cedric Robinson is being honoured for his
:08:58. > :09:01.duty and commitment to Morecambe Bay. The 80-year-old has dedicated
:09:01. > :09:05.his life to running the famous cross-bay walks, which can involve
:09:05. > :09:10.up to 600 people at a time. He'll be honoured by the town council later
:09:10. > :09:14.this evening. With temperatures in some parts of
:09:14. > :09:20.the region reaching up to 28 degrees Celsius today, today is for many of
:09:20. > :09:24.us the 13th day in a row of hot weather. Unlike other parts of the
:09:24. > :09:28.country the North West is not in a heat wave yet, but we are, says the
:09:28. > :09:32.Met Office, on a level one warning. That means there's a 30% chance we
:09:32. > :09:42.could be in a heat wave at some point. We can join Dianne now at
:09:42. > :09:43.
:09:43. > :09:48.Lyme Park in Cheshire. I know there have to be measures but it feels
:09:48. > :09:53.like a heatwave, doesn't it? does. I have come to Lyme Park to
:09:53. > :10:01.see if there is a breath of air anywhere in the north-west but it is
:10:01. > :10:06.just as hot here as anywhere else. We are officially in a heatwave.
:10:06. > :10:12.That aside, we are still hotter than many European cities and it is the
:10:12. > :10:15.fact that the hot spell is now prolonged, we are seeing
:10:16. > :10:22.consequences. NHS Direct say that in the first two weeks of July they saw
:10:22. > :10:27.a spike in the number of calls related to heat and sun stroke. The
:10:27. > :10:35.grass around us is so bone dry there is the risk of fires and there are
:10:35. > :10:39.warnings tonight that coastguards are telling us rip tides are
:10:39. > :10:45.developing on some beaches. But United Utilities say our reservoirs
:10:45. > :10:49.are still 79% full and there is no plan for a hosepipe ban. Judy Hobson
:10:49. > :10:55.has been around the north-west to find out how this weather is
:10:55. > :11:01.affecting you. 20 size and degrees on West Kirby Beach and people are
:11:01. > :11:08.finding all sorts of ways to keep cool. There is a bit of a breeze so
:11:08. > :11:17.it is fresh and it is lovely. Coastguards hear people -- said
:11:17. > :11:23.people need to be careful. People do not realise that they can get cut
:11:23. > :11:33.off walking back to land. United Utilities have made this film to
:11:33. > :11:33.
:11:33. > :11:37.show how seeming in reservoirs can be fatal. Meanwhile, it is the
:11:37. > :11:42.elderly that health experts are worried about. It comes as NHS
:11:42. > :11:47.Direct says there has been an increase in calls about sunburn and
:11:47. > :11:52.sunstroke. Older people, especially those with heart disease or other
:11:52. > :11:57.chronic long-term decisions can be more prone to the heat so they can
:11:57. > :12:07.be quite vulnerable. I have been to the doctors and I am quite woozy
:12:07. > :12:09.
:12:09. > :12:15.today. Drinkwater, dressed sensible and wear a hat. In Salford it is
:12:15. > :12:20.keeping the young core that is proving difficult. Keeping in the

:13:05. > :13:09.tomorrow. It was 28 degrees here in this part in Chorley. It will be hot

:13:56. > :14:01.Next tonight, there's been a fall across the North West in the number

:14:04. > :14:07.Despite cuts to force budgets and police numbers, crime in the North
:14:07. > :14:10.West, like in the rest of the country, has gone down. In Cumbria
:14:10. > :14:13.it fell by 11%. Greater Manchester saw the same reduction, although
:14:13. > :14:20.sexual offences rose by 5% with reports of historical sexual
:14:20. > :14:26.offences increasing by a third. In Lancashire and Merseyside the
:14:26. > :14:29.reduction was 5%. While in Cheshire it dropped by 4%. Today Greater
