:00:00. > :00:08.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight.
:00:09. > :00:12.Our top story: . A community calls for action as a
:00:13. > :00:14.girl dies and another is seriously injured after they were hit on a
:00:15. > :00:17.zebra crossing. We'll have the latest live, as
:00:18. > :00:23.Annalise Holt's mother pays tribute to her daughter. Also tonight:
:00:24. > :00:26.Betting on a loser. Two Polish blackmailers are jailed
:00:27. > :00:29.after threatening to wreck an online casino.
:00:30. > :00:33.Ronnie Biggs dies, but what about his victims? The railway town of
:00:34. > :00:40.Crewe remembers the guard and driver whose lives the train robber
:00:41. > :00:46.wrecked. He has had a long life and a family.
:00:47. > :00:49.David never had that. He never even had a wife and children.
:00:50. > :00:56.And we're flying off with the Liverpool team taking the baubles to
:00:57. > :01:01.Bethlehem. Will they all make it on time, and,
:01:02. > :01:05.when they do, will anyone understand a word they are saying? Join us
:01:06. > :01:13.later. And the Lancashire school hoping for
:01:14. > :01:20.a world record by adding some extra angels and wise men to its
:01:21. > :01:23.performance. More than 2,000 people have signed a
:01:24. > :01:26.petition calling for road safety improvements at the spot where a
:01:27. > :01:31.12`year`old girl was killed in Greater Manchester last night.
:01:32. > :01:35.Annalise Holt died at the scene An 11`year`old girl was also seriously
:01:36. > :01:40.injured when they were hit by a van at a zebra crossing on Milnrow Road
:01:41. > :01:43.in Shaw. Local people say they've been
:01:44. > :01:45.warning for several years that the crossing is dangerous and tonight
:01:46. > :01:58.councillors from Shaw have been meeting in the hope of getting it
:01:59. > :02:06.changed. In the last hour, Annalise Holt s
:02:07. > :02:10.mother released a statement in tribute to her daughter, saying
:02:11. > :02:16.that Annalise was my beautiful princess. She was loud and outgoing.
:02:17. > :02:21.I want her back and everyone to remember her for the caring and kind
:02:22. > :02:28.child that she was. This evening, a council meeting is
:02:29. > :02:32.starting in Oldham, which started with a minute's silence, for the
:02:33. > :02:34.death that has shocked the whole community.
:02:35. > :02:37.Today flowers were left in memory of Annalise Holt. She'd been crossing
:02:38. > :02:41.the road with an 11`year`old girl when they were both hit by a van
:02:42. > :02:47.just before 4:30 yesterday. Annalise died at the scene. The 11`year`old
:02:48. > :02:53.was seriously injured. There was commotion everywhere. You
:02:54. > :02:58.just feel absolutely helpless. I have two young children myself, and
:02:59. > :03:03.I feel for the family. I am devastated, because I heard it
:03:04. > :03:08.could be someone who I knew, I am close to the family. It is
:03:09. > :03:12.disgusting. This crossing needs changing to a pelican crossing. I
:03:13. > :03:15.just feel sick, because it could have been one of my girls.
:03:16. > :03:18.This afternoon investigators were at work, trying to find out what
:03:19. > :03:26.happened. No one has been arrested. But many living in the area say the
:03:27. > :03:30.crossing has worried them for years. As counsellors, we have been
:03:31. > :03:36.campaigning for years to get this improved. There has hardly been any
:03:37. > :03:40.improvement. After the last death, or they did Many people say the road
:03:41. > :03:43.layout here is very complicated that the number of side roads,
:03:44. > :03:45.junctions and signs causes confusion for motorists and pedestrians.
:03:46. > :03:48.Was paint white lines. Chris Gloster is a former Inspector for Road
:03:49. > :03:51.Traffic Policing in Oldham. He's gathered over 2,000 signatures on a
:03:52. > :03:54.petition calling for the zebra crossing here to be replaced by a
:03:55. > :04:01.pelican crossing with traffic lights.
:04:02. > :04:06.This crossing has been here during the whole of my policing career and
:04:07. > :04:14.I have lost count of the number of times I have attended serious and
:04:15. > :04:17.fatal collisions at this location. But any changes will come too late
:04:18. > :04:21.for Annalise Holt, tonight described by her school as a model student,
:04:22. > :04:25.who set an example for others in all aspects of school life.
:04:26. > :04:30.At the council meeting in Oldham tonight, the cabinet member for
:04:31. > :04:33.environment is sending his condolences to both families
:04:34. > :04:38.involved, but also pointing out to the council that he says there has
:04:39. > :04:43.been as misleading reports about this crossing site. He says that,
:04:44. > :04:51.prior to yesterday, there have been three incidents in 14 years, to just
:04:52. > :04:56.involving vehicle shunting, another involving a pedestrian killed. He
:04:57. > :05:00.said that the police report to that accident said that the glare of the
:05:01. > :05:05.sun was the problem. Despite that, the council says that they may
:05:06. > :05:10.consider changing the crossing, but that will be little comfort to the
:05:11. > :05:14.families involved tonight. It has all the elements of a
:05:15. > :05:16.Hollywood film ` an international tale of blackmail, revenge,
:05:17. > :05:20.gambling, cybercrime and an airport police sting. And it came to a head
:05:21. > :05:23.in Manchester. Today, two Polish men were sentenced to five years and
:05:24. > :05:26.four months in prison for blackmailing the owner of an online
:05:27. > :05:42.casino, by flooding its website and stopping customers from using it.
:05:43. > :05:46.A hotel room at Heathrow Airport, to Polish businessmen are threatening
:05:47. > :05:57.to bring chaos to the multi`million pound world of online gambling.
:05:58. > :06:04.They had already brought to Manchester `based casino to a halt,
:06:05. > :06:11.but they did not know that the owner had contacted the police.
:06:12. > :06:15.Today, the two men were sentenced to five years and four months in
:06:16. > :06:19.prison. This was an old`fashioned blackmail.
:06:20. > :06:22.In the 1930s, it would be pay the money or we will smash your
:06:23. > :06:27.windows. It was more high`tech. There was a victim at the bottom of
:06:28. > :06:31.this. The pair we using a technique called
:06:32. > :06:36.distribution denial of service, where they threatened to crash a
:06:37. > :06:40.website with fake traffic unless the owner give the money. The victim was
:06:41. > :06:47.in Manchester, but could have been anywhere. It was a random attack,
:06:48. > :06:51.and the attempt was not just money, but power and influence.
:06:52. > :06:54.They wanted to show old business enemies what they were capable of,
:06:55. > :06:57.and experts say that this type of blackmail is happening all the
:06:58. > :07:02.time. A lot of the time, these attacks
:07:03. > :07:06.happen from Eastern Europe, Russia, China. It is a big issue of
:07:07. > :07:13.geriatric and, trying to find and prosecute them in this country. ``
:07:14. > :07:19.restriction. But this gamble has been lost. The
:07:20. > :07:25.authorities say that they are getting better at finding such
:07:26. > :07:29.criminals. Some good news on the jobs front
:07:30. > :07:32.today. Unemployment in the North West has fallen in the last quarter
:07:33. > :07:36.by 29,000 after the last two quarters showed a rise. There are
:07:37. > :07:42.now 257,000 people out of work or 7.5% of the workforce.
:07:43. > :07:45.Merseyside MP Steve Rotheram has invited government ministers to
:07:46. > :07:48.Liverpool to see if they can find ways of making further cuts. The
:07:49. > :07:51.Walton MP was responding to the government's announcement that
:07:52. > :07:54.councils are to face a further .9% cut in grants next year. Liverpool
:07:55. > :08:04.has already reduced its budget by more than half.
:08:05. > :08:08.There are no pots left. If the Minister and the Secretary of State
:08:09. > :08:12.don't believe me, I will offer a first`class return ticket to both of
:08:13. > :08:16.the gentleman to come to Liverpool to have a look at the books and tell
:08:17. > :08:21.us where you believe we can cut further.
:08:22. > :08:25.Liverpool gets one of the highest spending power per dwelling in the
:08:26. > :08:30.country, and that does not allow for the fact that it has other money and
:08:31. > :08:37.a city deal. That is helping Liverpool beat the town should be.
:08:38. > :08:40.The coroner in the inquest of David Mole, who died after a fall at the
:08:41. > :08:43.Ramsey Dementia Unit in Cumbria has concluded staff shortages weren t to
:08:44. > :08:47.blame. The 84`year old from Haverigg died at the specialist unit in July
:08:48. > :08:49.last year. Last month, the hospital trust apologised after the Care
:08:50. > :08:58.Quality Commission found chronic staff shortages had impacted on
:08:59. > :09:00.patient safety. The man running the new criminal
:09:01. > :09:04.inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster says he's confident his
:09:05. > :09:07.team will get to the truth of what happened. Jon Stoddart was speaking
:09:08. > :09:12.ahead of the first anniversary of his inquiry being set up.
:09:13. > :09:14.The criminal inquiry is called Operation Resolve and it's based in
:09:15. > :09:18.Warrington. Our Merseyside Reporter, Andy Gill, has been there today and
:09:19. > :09:23.he can join us from Liverpool now with news of the progress the
:09:24. > :09:28.enquiry's making. How much progress are they making?
:09:29. > :09:32.There is some disquiet about the lack of progress. So today was an
:09:33. > :09:36.opportunity for the Operation Resolve team to show what they are
:09:37. > :09:39.doing. They had 500 witness contacts, they had gone through
:09:40. > :09:45.hundreds of thousands of documents and had found some police officers
:09:46. > :09:49.who had never given their account to a inquiry before. The man leading
:09:50. > :09:52.the inquiry says that he is confident about the part that they
:09:53. > :10:01.have two play in the new Hillsborough inquest.
:10:02. > :10:04.A poster of the 96 hangs on the wall of the Operation Resolve office in
:10:05. > :10:07.Warrington. A reminder of the people at the centre of this inquiry. More
:10:08. > :10:10.than 200 investigators work here. The man leading them says the
:10:11. > :10:16.interviews they've already carried out are unearthing new details.
:10:17. > :10:22.One police officer who is retired provided two pages of a statement
:10:23. > :10:28.that was relevant, back in 1989 When we interviewed her, it has
:10:29. > :10:30.taken this to 22 pages. Operation Resolve is the new
:10:31. > :10:34.criminal inquiry into Hillsborough. But it has two roles. Its current
:10:35. > :10:37.priority is to assist the coroner to prepare for next year's new
:10:38. > :10:40.inquests. And it's examining whether any individual or organisation is
:10:41. > :10:43.culpable for the 96 deaths. Resolve is also working closely with the
:10:44. > :10:44.third Hillsborough inquiry. The Independent Police Complaints
:10:45. > :10:57.Commission is examining alleged police misconduct after the event.
:10:58. > :11:05.Most of the Operation Resolve investigators are former or serving
:11:06. > :11:12.police people, but none of them have any socio and with the Yorkshire
:11:13. > :11:15.police or the Merseyside Police `` Association. They say that they are
:11:16. > :11:18.not accountable to any police. In the New Year, Operation Resolve
:11:19. > :11:20.aims to interview key decision makers at Hillsborough.
:11:21. > :11:25.Like match commander, Superintendent David Duckinfield. But it can't
:11:26. > :11:29.compel anyone to speak. Only eight people have declined
:11:30. > :11:35.some for legitimate reasons, and others are refusing. But we would
:11:36. > :11:41.far rather, for the family sake that no one refuse.
:11:42. > :11:46.The inquiry will look at the design, history and modifications of the
:11:47. > :11:51.ground as far back as 1975. When might any prosecutions happen?
:11:52. > :11:55.The inquest will take up most of next year. The prosecutions may not
:11:56. > :12:00.happen until late next year or 015, and it will be up to the Director of
:12:01. > :12:10.Public Prosecutions as to whether they do happen or not.
:12:11. > :12:13.Ronnie Biggs, the most notorious of all the Great Train Robbers, died
:12:14. > :12:17.today. In one of his last interviews he said he wanted to be remembered
:12:18. > :12:21.as a lovable rogue. And for many he was just that... But in the railway
:12:22. > :12:25.town of Crewe, home to the driver and the guard who were subjected to
:12:26. > :12:27.a violent attack on the mail train that night in 1963, there's been
:12:28. > :12:31.little sympathy. The telephone wires have been cut. I
:12:32. > :12:37.did not know it was a trap, even then.
:12:38. > :12:41.The train driver, Jack Mills, after the robbery. The crime's audacity
:12:42. > :12:46.has gone down in folklore, with Ronnie Biggs becoming a celebrity,
:12:47. > :12:55.but that is not how he is viewed in Crewe, Jack's hometown, where he
:12:56. > :13:00.remains disabled. This man was a fire man in the 1950s.
:13:01. > :13:09.He was protecting his train. He did not want to help them do anything to
:13:10. > :13:15.his train. All he wanted to do was to halt them away and to do what
:13:16. > :13:20.they wanted to do, and they beat him up. They did not deserve `` he did
:13:21. > :13:25.not deserve that. The Great Train Robbery still
:13:26. > :13:36.fascinates. A new drama is on BBC One tonight. This man was also on
:13:37. > :13:44.the train. He died in 1934 stop he had a long life and family.
:13:45. > :13:45.David did not have an adult life, no children.
:13:46. > :13:53.And at Crewe station, little sympathy. I don't admire him, and I
:13:54. > :13:57.hate the status that he has. You have to worry about the crew on
:13:58. > :14:02.the train, because they were innocent. They should be remembered.
:14:03. > :14:07.The names of the robbers will doubtless fade into history, but not
:14:08. > :14:11.those of Jack Mills and David Whitby. They will be permanently
:14:12. > :14:23.remembered here at the railway station, with a plaque reminding
:14:24. > :14:26.everyone of their efforts. Meanwhile, in Preston, there's no
:14:27. > :14:30.room at the inn ` or anywhere else, for that matter ` as a thousand
:14:31. > :14:32.children take part in a record`breaking nativity play.
:14:33. > :14:41.Third time round. St Helen's boxer Martin Murray announces plans for a
:14:42. > :14:45.world title fight. Now, later on the programme we'll be
:14:46. > :14:48.seeing that epic nativity play up in Preston, first we can get a bit
:14:49. > :14:51.closer to the real thing. All this week we're joining the
:14:52. > :14:54.Liverpool team who've been given the job of decorating perhaps the most
:14:55. > :14:56.important Christmas tree in the world, in Bethlehem, where the
:14:57. > :14:59.Christmas story began 2000 years ago. Tonight the wise men with
:15:00. > :15:10.strange accents arrive bearing gifts.
:15:11. > :15:15.Two and a half thousand miles away, Bethlehem, where our team of
:15:16. > :15:23.Christmas decorators are about to fly out on the journey of a
:15:24. > :15:31.lifetime. This is the big job? This is the
:15:32. > :15:35.most famous city in the world. The Prime Minister will stand on the
:15:36. > :15:40.stage. There will be 25,000 people in the square.
:15:41. > :15:44.What are the fears? That it does not switch on.
:15:45. > :15:50.But the team have more pressing concerns than the switch on. Israeli
:15:51. > :16:01.security famously tight. Their driver waits and waits, still none.
:16:02. > :16:06.Nothing to do but sleep and get on with a game of suitcase curling
:16:07. > :16:11.until the driver is out. The job done.
:16:12. > :16:20.It is the place where the Christmas story really begins, where a baby
:16:21. > :16:23.was born in a major. `` manger. The story that still inspires 2000 years
:16:24. > :16:31.on. There is no time for wonder, not
:16:32. > :16:34.yet. 7am, day one on the job. A team of Palestinian volunteers have been
:16:35. > :16:41.drafted in. Not a word. Nobody understands a
:16:42. > :16:47.word that the other is saying. How are you coping with the language
:16:48. > :16:52.barrier? On a plane from over the water.
:16:53. > :17:03.By 9am, the team is flagging. I have just had a text. The guys are
:17:04. > :17:11.starving, please get breakfast. Breakfast, Palestinian style. So,
:17:12. > :17:22.breakfast is normally? Cereal. Eat that. Someone has to do eat it.
:17:23. > :17:27.Powered by falafel and hummus, they continue, but later start to see the
:17:28. > :17:31.real reason why they and thousands of pilgrims are here.
:17:32. > :17:36.This is the Church of the Nativity, the very spot where it is claimed
:17:37. > :17:41.Jesus was born. We are only giving a a few minutes to film.
:17:42. > :17:48.It is really nice. It is a strange experience, because in this church
:17:49. > :17:56.it is very loud. Everyone is singing about Bethlehem. They were all in
:17:57. > :18:04.harmony, singing away, and then Jack sang Silent night. He destroyed this
:18:05. > :18:10.`` atmosphere. Wonder, shattered by the Scousers.
:18:11. > :18:15.It can only get better with the switch on. We will have more
:18:16. > :18:23.tomorrow. She is making is wait for the big
:18:24. > :18:26.switch on! Stuart Pollitt is here now with this
:18:27. > :18:28.evening's sport, and it's different fortunes for our South American
:18:29. > :18:31.strikers. Yes, and we'll start with the good
:18:32. > :18:34.news. Good news if you're a Liverpool supporter, but not
:18:35. > :18:37.necessarily if you're a Premier League defender or fan of another
:18:38. > :18:40.team. That's because the Reds have opened talks with Luis Suarez in an
:18:41. > :18:44.effort to ensure the Uruguayan stays at Anfield. Liverpool could make him
:18:45. > :18:47.the highest paid player in their history to head off interest from
:18:48. > :18:50.the likes of Real Madrid. So potentially good news for Reds
:18:51. > :18:54.fans, but it's a dose of the blues for the Blues of Manchester, with
:18:55. > :18:57.the news that Argentinian star Sergio Aguero is now facing up to
:18:58. > :19:01.two months on the sidelines with the calf injury he picked up on
:19:02. > :19:04.Saturday. City had been hoping he'd only be out for a month.
:19:05. > :19:07.But even without Aguero, City are through to the last four of the
:19:08. > :19:10.Capital One Cup after a comfortable win at Leicester.
:19:11. > :19:14.Edin Dzeko rounded off a 3`1 victory with this goal at the King Power
:19:15. > :19:18.Stadium, his second of the night. Alexander Kolarov was also on
:19:19. > :19:21.target. Manchester United will attempt to
:19:22. > :19:25.join their neighbours in the last four when they visit Stoke City
:19:26. > :19:28.tonight. Many of the top teams rest big name players in the Capital One
:19:29. > :19:31.Cup but United boss David Moyes insists the competition is an
:19:32. > :19:38.important one. People used to say why are you doing
:19:39. > :19:41.this, but every manager wants to win every competition they are going
:19:42. > :19:48.to. There may be some priorities, but certainly in this football
:19:49. > :19:56.club, I have only ever tried to win every tournament I am involved in.
:19:57. > :20:00.Oldham Athletic can look forward to a big FA Cup pay day away to
:20:01. > :20:02.Liverpool after winning through to the competition's third round last
:20:03. > :20:06.night. This brilliant free kick from Danny Philliskirk started a second
:20:07. > :20:09.half revival by the Latics who scored four times after the break to
:20:10. > :20:13.win their second round replay 4`1 at Mansfield and book that trip to
:20:14. > :20:17.Anfield next month. It'll be the third year in a row the two sides
:20:18. > :20:19.have met in the FA Cup. Staying with Oldham, and the club's
:20:20. > :20:23.former forward Christian Montano has denied any wrongdoing after he was
:20:24. > :20:25.sacked on Monday. In a statement, the Columbian's solicitors say the
:20:26. > :20:28.player "vehemently denies" being involved in spot`fixing and that
:20:29. > :20:30.Oldham conducted "no proper investigation". The 22`year`old was
:20:31. > :20:34.one of six players arrested and bailed as part of an inquiry by the
:20:35. > :20:42.National Crime Agency. The police investigation is ongoing.
:20:43. > :20:46.Now, St Helens boxer Martin Murray is hoping it's third time lucky when
:20:47. > :20:49.he fights for a world title next year. It was announced today that
:20:50. > :20:56.Martin, would face Australian Jarrod Fletcher for the WBA Middleweight
:20:57. > :21:00.title in February. He fought for the world title in
:21:01. > :21:03.Germany, then again in Argentina, now it's Monte Carlo or bust.
:21:04. > :21:11.Martin's heading to Monaco on February the first for a third shot
