:00:00. > :00:00.itself. Thank you. That is all

:00:07. > :00:14.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Annabel Tiffin and

:00:15. > :00:16.Roger Johnson. Our top story. Christmas travel chaos after

:00:17. > :00:22.warnings the region will be battered by 90 mile an hour winds. We are

:00:23. > :00:25.most concerned about Cumbria at the moment, the people living or

:00:26. > :00:31.travelling to Cumbria during this break need to keep a close eye on

:00:32. > :00:34.the weather forecasts. The warning comes a man dies after falling into

:00:35. > :00:39.a river in the Lake District. Also tonight: Facing their toughest

:00:40. > :00:43.challenge ever, but what treat will Bolton's Atlantic rowers have on

:00:44. > :00:51.Christmas Day? Merry Christmas!

:00:52. > :00:58.And join us for our last night in Bethlehem, where the countdown is

:00:59. > :01:04.about to begin. Boys, are we ready? Yes! And we are celebrating all of

:01:05. > :01:09.our Christmas Stars, but we have one more to give. You will it go to? We

:01:10. > :01:16.will supply them later on in the programme. They haven't got a clue!

:01:17. > :01:39.Why this Liverpool chorister can't wait for midnight mass to be over.

:01:40. > :01:42.It's meant to be the time of year we can relax and forget our troubles,

:01:43. > :01:45.but bad winter weather is bringing problems for many people travelling

:01:46. > :01:49.in and out of the North West. And according to the Met Office it's

:01:50. > :01:53.only going to get worse. Today it issued a yellow warning, that winds

:01:54. > :01:56.of up to 90 miles per hour could hit the region tomorrow. Our reporter

:01:57. > :01:59.Ian Haslam is at Manchester Piccadilly for us now, and Ian, it's

:02:00. > :02:11.been a slow Christmas getaway for some.

:02:12. > :02:14.What nobody wants on one of the big `` busiest travel days of the year

:02:15. > :02:20.is travel disruptions to their plans. The weather was worse today

:02:21. > :02:24.by the travel situation was better. The advice to people is that if they

:02:25. > :02:29.could get here before three o'clock, especially if they were

:02:30. > :02:33.headed to London, because the journey would be smoother. That is

:02:34. > :02:37.the way it has transpired. Those people were the lucky ones. The

:02:38. > :02:42.people arriving now are facing problems. Train to London used in

:02:43. > :02:46.are being massively delayed. Trains returning to the North West are also

:02:47. > :02:49.being badly delayed because of a power supply fairly Elvir in

:02:50. > :02:54.Watford. Not the ideas start to many people's Christmas holidays.

:02:55. > :02:57.If there's one thing that's always likely to complicate Christmas it's

:02:58. > :03:02.the weather. Especially if you're travelling by train over the next

:03:03. > :03:05.couple of days. We have got a ticket but for how the success evening but

:03:06. > :03:08.I am trying to get an earlier one because I am worried about delays.

:03:09. > :03:11.Most affected are trains to London. Virgin usually runs three services

:03:12. > :03:15.an hour to the capital, each carrying up to 400 passengers. But

:03:16. > :03:23.this afternoon came weather`related timetable changes. The trains did

:03:24. > :03:28.change frequency from three in our two two an hour as a result of the

:03:29. > :03:30.bad weather. We have adduced ourselves to one train per hour. It

:03:31. > :03:36.ourselves to one train per hour It is over one hour and it is taking

:03:37. > :03:39.about three hours. No reported delays, but high winds have brought

:03:40. > :03:42.wobbly flying and drama to Manchester Airport today. An Airbus

:03:43. > :03:45.380 passenger plane similar to this had to abort its first landing.

:03:46. > :03:49.Having landed safely at the second attempt, one passenger tweeted his

:03:50. > :03:52.relief, saying he might go and hug the pilot. Meanwhile, Liverpool John

:03:53. > :03:57.Lennon Airport is on stand`by for flights diverted from Southern

:03:58. > :04:02.England. We just let the airlines know that if they need to divert,

:04:03. > :04:06.that Liverpool is open. It also means a busy time for the Highways

:04:07. > :04:10.Agency. According to the Met Office, worse weather is on the way, with

:04:11. > :04:12.winds of up 80 per hour predicted for the North West tomorrow. We

:04:13. > :04:14.appreciate you have to make journeys. If you do not have to,

:04:15. > :04:18.journeys. If you do not have to please stay at home. But if you do,

:04:19. > :04:23.plan very carefully, give yourself plenty of time. We are most

:04:24. > :04:26.concerned about Cumbria at the moment. People living or travelling

:04:27. > :04:30.to Cumbria for Christmas and new year break need to keep a really

:04:31. > :04:34.close eye on the weather forecast. Meanwhile as it stands, a small

:04:35. > :04:37.number of flood warnings have been issued in the region, a number

:04:38. > :04:41.that's likely to increase if the rain continues.

:04:42. > :04:46.There is some disruption to the isle of man steam packet ferry crossing.

:04:47. > :04:48.Keep an eye on that if you were headed that way. Back to you in the

:04:49. > :04:51.studio. As Ian says, gales and storms have

:04:52. > :04:55.been causing huge problems across the region. And we're told it's

:04:56. > :04:59.likely to get worse over the next 24 hours. Eno will have a full forecast

:05:00. > :05:03.later, but she's here now to tell us where is likely to be hardest hit.

:05:04. > :05:08.Eno, has the Met Office issued a weather warning? It is valid until

:05:09. > :05:11.2am tomorrow, and it will be potentially damaging gusts of winds

:05:12. > :05:14.to come over the next 24 hours here in the North West. Which parts of

:05:15. > :05:18.the region are likely to get the worst of it? This storm is coming

:05:19. > :05:22.from America. It is going to Scotland and Northern Ireland

:05:23. > :05:26.tomorrow and as he crossed the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man will be the

:05:27. > :05:32.first place to see the very strong winds. Anything from 70 mph up to 80

:05:33. > :05:35.miles per hour. These are severe gales and they will continue to

:05:36. > :05:40.cross and they will make landfall. We are likely to see very strong

:05:41. > :05:44.gasps over the tops of the Pennines of stop And tell us about the

:05:45. > :05:46.Environment Agency's flood warnings? We had plenty of rain today and

:05:47. > :05:52.there is plenty rain to come. 14 there is plenty rain to come. 14

:05:53. > :06:02.flood alerts, but I will bring a full forecasts to update you on

:06:03. > :06:05.those at the end of the programme. A man's body has been found following

:06:06. > :06:08.an extensive search after he fell into the River Rothay at Ambleside

:06:09. > :06:10.in the Lake District. Our reporter Dan Johnson is at the scene now.

:06:11. > :06:15.Dan Johnson is at the scene now Dan, what do we know about what

:06:16. > :06:18.happened? There was heavy rain this morning on

:06:19. > :06:22.top of big downpours over the weekend, so the rivers right through

:06:23. > :06:27.every are heavily swollen and very fast flowing. A man has been

:06:28. > :06:33.reported as filing into the river just as it flows into Lake

:06:34. > :06:37.Windermere here. That was around 2:30pm this afternoon. A huge rescue

:06:38. > :06:41.operation was put into action the police, firefighters and mountain

:06:42. > :06:45.rescue and search and rescue helicopter were all unable to locate

:06:46. > :06:51.him in time and he was pulled from the water here at around 330. He did

:06:52. > :06:55.not survive. A casualty of the storms that are not hitting the West

:06:56. > :06:57.Coast. There have been some properties affected in North Cumbria

:06:58. > :07:02.over the weekend and the railway line was closed for a wild. It has

:07:03. > :07:04.now reopened but there are concerns that, with more rain on the way,

:07:05. > :07:16.there could be perhaps flashed funding tomorrow. ``/funding

:07:17. > :07:21.tomorrow `` flash flooding tomorrow. We will get a further update on the

:07:22. > :07:24.weather later in the programme. Staying with rough weather, and

:07:25. > :07:27.while you tuck into your turkey this Christmas, spare a thought for a

:07:28. > :07:30.team from Bolton who will be battling with the elements in the

:07:31. > :07:34.world's toughest rowing race. Instead of being at home on

:07:35. > :07:37.Wednesday, they'll be a third of the way into a 3,000 mile trip across

:07:38. > :07:40.the Atlantic raising cash for charity. They've been surviving on

:07:41. > :07:44.dried food rations, but as Stuart Pollitt reports, they've a treat

:07:45. > :07:49.onboard for Christmas Day. Imagine spending Christmas Day here.

:07:50. > :07:55.That's what these Bolton businessmen will be doing. They're currently a

:07:56. > :08:00.third of the way through the toughest rowing race in the world.

:08:01. > :08:08.The weather conditions were pretty hostile, with 40 foot waves. At home

:08:09. > :08:11.Mark's family are following his progress, and finally coming to

:08:12. > :08:16.terms with how long it's going to take. How long will he be away for?

:08:17. > :08:22.Will it be a wake `` week or something? It will be a good couple

:08:23. > :08:27.of months. But Tom and his mum Tracey have, almost, adapted to a

:08:28. > :08:30.Christmas without dad. We have not got any Christmas lights outside

:08:31. > :08:34.because our dad just always goes up there and put them up. We are

:08:35. > :08:41.probably going to sing a couple of Christmas carols. I have got a

:08:42. > :08:47.father Christmas beer. We have eight `` father Chris's beard. We have a

:08:48. > :08:52.ham and chocolates. The highlight of Christmas Day will be the phone call

:08:53. > :08:57.home. It is difficult to try and reshape what they have been through.

:08:58. > :09:02.We can get a picture of how tough the conditions are. Tracey and Tom

:09:03. > :09:08.are planning to meet Mark in Antigua. Hopefully he'll arrive at

:09:09. > :09:14.the end of January. Now, it's the big one. The switch on

:09:15. > :09:19.of the most iconic Christmas tree in the world. It's Bethlehem, Manger

:09:20. > :09:26.Square, and an image that will be beamed around the world. The

:09:27. > :09:29.pressure is mounting for the Liverpool Christmas tree decorators,

:09:30. > :09:34.but there's always time for a nice cup of tea. In the first of two

:09:35. > :09:42.reports Jayne Barrett reports on how it's not just a job.

:09:43. > :10:02.Let me introduce Omar. Or as the team call him. Ha`ha! The language

:10:03. > :10:10.barrier hasn't got in the way of friendships. Couldn't do it without

:10:11. > :10:18.them? Wouldn't want to do it without them to be honest. We're pals now

:10:19. > :10:22.for a year, yes? This job is the only one Omar has had all year. One

:10:23. > :10:24.in four are unemployed here in Bethlehem. Life isn't easy in the

:10:25. > :10:32.walled city. Israel places restrictions on where Palestinians

:10:33. > :10:35.can go. The freedom of movement that you

:10:36. > :10:40.can't cross. You cannot work. You cannot go from place to place. So

:10:41. > :10:46.this is difficult to survive in it. Are you considered a security risk?

:10:47. > :10:48.I am not a security risk at all, Are you considered a security risk?

:10:49. > :10:50.I am not a security risk at all I I am not a security risk at all, I

:10:51. > :10:52.am just a normal person. But Israel says the restrictions are necessary.

:10:53. > :11:13.The security threat is real. The switch on is just a few hours

:11:14. > :11:19.away, the team have a last minute invitation. T with Omar. It's

:11:20. > :11:34.incredible. It's like living in a cave. Ha`ha, how long have you lived

:11:35. > :11:38.here? Who else lives here then? Now? My mother and father and my sister

:11:39. > :11:50.and children, two girls, and my brother and Yousef and me and my

:11:51. > :11:53.wife. The mentee, peach tea. `` lemon tea. Pleasure to meet you.

:11:54. > :11:55.wife. The mentee, peach tea. `` lemon tea. Pleasure to meet you I

:11:56. > :11:59.lemon tea. Pleasure to meet you. I don't know an Omar, I only know

:12:00. > :12:16.Haha! Haha! Do you think your mum could try? Haha! How do you say

:12:17. > :12:25.salud? Sate! Happiness and laughter. Haha! I complained when I had two

:12:26. > :12:38.brothers in my room. You don't know how lucky you are at home. Amazing.

:12:39. > :12:44.Masalama. For now. Because in four hours, the lights go on. Hopefully.

:12:45. > :12:53.We cannot wait. Some lovely stuff there. Really heart`warming stuff

:12:54. > :12:57.there, and stay with us for the big switch on later on in the programme,

:12:58. > :12:59.but now to more heart`warming stuff, our Christmas Stars.

:13:00. > :13:02.All through December we have been bringing you the stories of everyday

:13:03. > :13:05.people showing kindness to others. We have been amazed at the

:13:06. > :13:12.generosity of spirit here in the North West. Our reporter Naomi

:13:13. > :13:20.Cornwell is in Stretford. She joins us now.

:13:21. > :13:23.You can't beat a brass band, very festive and uplifting, uplifting

:13:24. > :13:26.just like our Christmas Stars. You nominated them, we filmed the most

:13:27. > :13:30.moving stories, but there were lots of you who deserved praise. So keep

:13:31. > :13:32.your eyes peeled as we look back at our Christmas Stars. You might be

:13:33. > :13:59.getting a thanks! For all this good work you have done

:14:00. > :14:04.for Josephine. We found out that he had a brain tumour. It had everybody

:14:05. > :14:11.hard. He put his fronts before himself. We meet every Friday, the

:14:12. > :14:15.1230, three course meal. He used to run around with his car picking us

:14:16. > :14:19.up so we did not have to walk. She is there six days a week and she

:14:20. > :14:23.works really hard. All you needed someone to reach out their hand and

:14:24. > :14:31.say, hang me and I will help you through this stage. It is great for

:14:32. > :14:34.other people to see that. We couldn't get through without people

:14:35. > :14:43.like June, who helped us see that we can carry on. He bought Sarah a bath

:14:44. > :14:47.and a complete suite. It was brilliant. He did not have to do it

:14:48. > :14:58.but he did. She really doesn't so many things for so many people. He

:14:59. > :15:02.is a wonderful person. Absolutely shocked! Never won anything in my

:15:03. > :15:13.life! You're a star! That is brilliant. Thank you very much.

:15:14. > :15:15.Thank you. Thank you so much. We have got a rather large Christmas

:15:16. > :15:21.tree, so it is going on the top. have got a rather large Christmas

:15:22. > :15:28.tree, so it is going on the top You make me feel about 20. This is a bit

:15:29. > :15:37.of a surprise. Appreciation for all you have done. Thank you very much.

:15:38. > :15:44.Thank you. It just makes it all worthwhile.

:15:45. > :15:50.They don't look like it right now but this is actually a marching

:15:51. > :15:53.band, a running band in fact. A band that ran the London Marathon in a

:15:54. > :15:57.record time, putting them in the Guinness Book of Records. They met

:15:58. > :16:02.in Huddersfield, but many are based here in the North West. And they're

:16:03. > :16:09.all amazing, but particularly the founder of the band Mike Lomas. Step

:16:10. > :16:13.forward, Mike, because your friend Tim Hewitt got in touch with us to

:16:14. > :16:16.tell us how you're the driving force behind fundraising tens of thousands

:16:17. > :16:19.of pounds for charity and he nominated you as one of North West

:16:20. > :16:26.Tonight's Christmas Stars. You are one of our stars, so well done! Tim,

:16:27. > :16:31.why is Mike so special? He is a fundraising dynamo. It is hard

:16:32. > :16:35.enough to organise a brass band as it is. This is the second time

:16:36. > :16:39.you've got a band to run the marathon for charity. Mike, you're

:16:40. > :16:41.doing the London Marathon again next year. How much hoping to raise this

:16:42. > :16:45.time? We will try to make ?60,000. year. How much hoping to raise this

:16:46. > :16:52.time? We will try to make ?60,0 0. Not easy when you have an

:16:53. > :16:58.instrument? No, not really. We're going to let you play out the

:16:59. > :17:01.programme. Well done, Mike, for your extraordinary efforts, and to all

:17:02. > :17:04.our Christmas Stars around the North West, for all your amazing acts of

:17:05. > :17:16.generosity. Some heart`warming stories for the festive season.

:17:17. > :17:25.Fantastic to see the final Christmas star given up. `` given out. He has

:17:26. > :17:29.a huge smile on his face. If you saw the name of anyone that you know on

:17:30. > :17:33.the screen, we had so many of them, and unfortunately we cannot give

:17:34. > :17:37.them all a Christmas not. Great stuff.

:17:38. > :17:45.We will have our last Christmas Star tomorrow night. It will be Liverpool

:17:46. > :17:51.schoolgirl Bethany McGivern, who has been raising money for a World War

:17:52. > :17:54.One memorial. The run`up to Christmas is a busy time for most of

:17:55. > :17:57.us. If you think you've been busy then spare a thought for one

:17:58. > :18:00.choirboy from Liverpool. It's been a momentous year for 11`year`old Jack

:18:01. > :18:03.Topping. He's been made an ambassador for Save the Children,

:18:04. > :18:08.played before the Queen and will be appearing on the Strictly Christmas

:18:09. > :18:12.Special. Earlier today he broke off from his

:18:13. > :18:16.packed schedule and came into see us and I started by asking him what's

:18:17. > :18:24.been the highlight of his year. I have got three will stop the first

:18:25. > :18:29.one is singing to the Queen. `` I have got three. The first one is

:18:30. > :18:38.singing to the green `` the Queen. Another one was meeting valid Jones.

:18:39. > :18:45.What are you doing last year? Probably doing homework. It has been

:18:46. > :18:51.an incredible journey. You have to pinch ourselves sometimes. Yes. It

:18:52. > :18:56.doesn't feel real. `` pinch yourself sometimes. The hard work pays off.

:18:57. > :19:03.Is it right you are not allowed to eat chocolate? Not before icing I

:19:04. > :19:09.cannot have 50 drink and dairy. `` fizzy drinks and dairy. That will be

:19:10. > :19:14.difficult. You are singing on Christmas Eve. Then I can go mad

:19:15. > :19:19.with chocolate! Selection boxes all around. What do you want for

:19:20. > :19:23.Christmas, apart from chocolate What ever I get, it will be a really

:19:24. > :19:27.nice Christmas, because I am able to spend it with my Emily and relax,

:19:28. > :19:31.because I have been busy busy. The things you have done this year the

:19:32. > :19:37.children who are less fortunate than yourself is you have been to Africa.

:19:38. > :19:46.What was that like? It was quite heartbreaking. To see the projects

:19:47. > :19:49.that save the children do, it is quite upsetting, because they are

:19:50. > :19:55.the same age as me, the children. I am a child. I do not have the same

:19:56. > :20:03.opportunity as me. And you have a single out that is raising money for

:20:04. > :20:06.the charity. Tell us a bit about it? Well, the single is out now, and the

:20:07. > :20:14.money goes to save the children. And money goes to save the children. And

:20:15. > :20:19.it is called tomorrow. We hope you have a good date tomorrow finishing

:20:20. > :20:25.the midnight mass on and then a lovely Christmas. Thank you. You are

:20:26. > :20:26.welcome. And a whole lot of chocolate. You cannot blame him can

:20:27. > :20:30.chocolate. You cannot blame him, can you? Jack will be singing Silent

:20:31. > :20:33.Night later in the programme. It's a performance worth waiting around

:20:34. > :20:36.for. Back to Bethlehem. The Palestinian

:20:37. > :20:40.Prime Minister is on the way. There are snipers on the roofs of Manger

:20:41. > :20:46.Square. So when they flick the switch, that tree better light up!

:20:47. > :20:49.Lets join Ged, Zane, Al, Tony and Dan for the very last time. What an

:20:50. > :21:02.adventure it's been. Here's Jayne McCubbin.

:21:03. > :21:10.Merry Christmas! It's the big day. Are we ready? We are! We are set.

:21:11. > :21:12.Nothing else to do. Job done? Just wait. And pray. And we're in the

:21:13. > :21:20.right place to pray! The stress! wait. And pray. And we're in the

:21:21. > :21:25.right place to pray! The stress! The mass! This does not bode well. Zane

:21:26. > :21:35.is the spark. The man with the biggest job of them all.

:21:36. > :21:37.Even before the switch is flicked, the team have become local

:21:38. > :21:40.celebrities, with locals and tourists asking for photos in the

:21:41. > :21:44.street. Check you lot out local celebs! You going to get big headed

:21:45. > :21:48.now, Tony? Already am. It'd be unusual not to get this sort of

:21:49. > :21:58.attention! Every year they come here and make great job like this one. As

:21:59. > :22:02.light fades, Manger Square fills. The Palestinian PM is moments away,
