:00:13. > :00:18.Good evening. Local campaigners have welcomed
:00:19. > :00:21.today's news that the Second World War code`breaker Alan Turing, who
:00:22. > :00:26.worked at Manchester University has received a posthumous royal pardon.
:00:27. > :00:29.Dr Turing was convicted in 1952 for homosexual activity, which was
:00:30. > :00:32.illegal at the time. He killed himself two years later. There's
:00:33. > :00:43.been a long campaign, largely based in Manchester, to secure his pardon.
:00:44. > :00:48.We've certainly adopted him as one of our own. He spent a lot of time
:00:49. > :00:53.working here, he lived here, he loved the city, and the city loved
:00:54. > :00:59.Alan Turing. That is evident in street names, buildings, statues,
:01:00. > :01:06.bridges. For him to be celebrated today means an awful lot to
:01:07. > :01:09.Manchester. Lancashire Police are continuing
:01:10. > :01:12.their investigation after a man s body was discovered in a street in
:01:13. > :01:16.Chorley. He's believed to have been aged in his fifties, and his death
:01:17. > :01:19.is being treated as unexplained at the moment. His body was found in
:01:20. > :01:37.Gillibrand Walks near the town centre, early this morning.
:01:38. > :01:40.The government has given its support to a smartphone app which will allow
:01:41. > :01:43.cyclists to report potholes. The idea was announced by Roads
:01:44. > :01:46.Minister Robert Goodwill who has been in Oldham, looking at the
:01:47. > :01:50.problem. It will enable the councils, particularly older which
:01:51. > :01:59.is one of the best in terms of its strategy for maintaining roads.
:02:00. > :02:02."Lest we forget", the inscription on memorials dating back to the First
:02:03. > :02:05.World War. As the years go by though, many of those named have
:02:06. > :02:08.been forgotten. But 12`year`old Beth McGivern is determined that one man
:02:09. > :02:15.from Liverpool, who died at the Somme, will be remembered. She's our
:02:16. > :02:21.final Christmas star. This is a story of a kind of
:02:22. > :02:27.friendship, a soldier and a school born a century apart. Both from
:02:28. > :02:31.Liverpool, they never met. The soldier was Sidney Harris, he lived
:02:32. > :02:37.in egg birth. When the First World War came along, he joined one of the
:02:38. > :02:47.liveable battalions. In 1916, when he was 24, he died at the Battle of
:02:48. > :02:53.the Somme. Sidney Harris's grave was derelict, until discovered by Beth
:02:54. > :02:57.McGivern. She is 12. Bethany thought, this man is a war
:02:58. > :03:03.hero, nobody is looking after his grave. She looks after him all the
:03:04. > :03:09.time. These mementos on the grave. Beth has raved ?1000 towards a
:03:10. > :03:16.memorial to the battalion in Liverpool. We would like to give
:03:17. > :03:18.this Christmas star to Bethany on our behalf.
:03:19. > :03:25.That is beautiful, she will really appreciate that.
:03:26. > :03:31.We would like to say we are so proud of what you have done. Why is it
:03:32. > :03:38.important to remember soldiers? Because they gave their lives for
:03:39. > :03:42.us. As the centenary of the Great War pictures, Beth McGivern is
:03:43. > :03:47.determined one`man's sacrifice will not be forgotten.
:03:48. > :03:56.Eno's here to tell us about the Christmas weather.
:03:57. > :04:03.Good evening. A windy afternoon but mostly dry. 12 showers sneaking
:04:04. > :04:08.through by late afternoon. We still have four flood warnings from the
:04:09. > :04:13.Environment Agency. And we hang onto that yellow weather warning for
:04:14. > :04:20.strong winds from the wet `` the Met Office. Showers continue to feed
:04:21. > :04:27.through. They will ease away after midnight. Dreyer, the winds will
:04:28. > :04:32.fade. Clear skies. A chilly night, temperatures dropping to two
:04:33. > :04:37.Celsius. Some frost on Christmas morning. Thankfully, Christmas Day
:04:38. > :04:42.looks much quieter. We start on a dry and bright note tomorrow. I
:04:43. > :04:47.don't think we will see hardly any showers. Plenty of sunshine in the
:04:48. > :04:51.afternoon, not particularly warm, eight Celsius may be. Boxing Day
:04:52. > :04:55.looks really good. For the time being, your local radio can update
:04:56. > :05:01.you on travel. That's all from us tonight. Our next
:05:02. > :05:06.bulletin's at 1pm on Boxing Day From everyone at North West Tonight,
:05:07. > :05:16.Hello. The weather has been a little kinder today to travellers and
:05:17. > :05:19.last-minute Christmas shoppers across England and Wales. Not as bad
:05:20. > :05:26.as we feared across Northern Ireland. We have a warning out
:05:27. > :05:32.across parts of Scott and for that strong wind through this evening. Up
:05:33. > :05:34.to 80 miles an hour across the far north of Scotland for a
