:00:00. > :00:19.for the latest where you Good evening. The police in Cumbria

:00:20. > :00:23.have named a man who died in a house fire in Ambleside as Richard Durkin.

:00:24. > :00:35.He was 58. The blaze broke out in a terraced house in the centre of the

:00:36. > :00:40.town early today. Fire crews were called to the house

:00:41. > :00:44.on Bridge Street at 7:30am. There was a severe fire in the kitchen

:00:45. > :00:47.which spread to other parts of the property. You can see fire damage to

:00:48. > :00:50.the window at the rear of the house. Fire officers recovered the

:00:51. > :00:54.man from the fire but despite receiving medical attention, he

:00:55. > :01:01.died. His partner escaped unharmed. Fire crews from across the South

:01:02. > :01:04.Lakes help. Crews from the area were mobilised. They got here quickly.

:01:05. > :01:09.The Ambleside crew were just over the road. They started tackling the

:01:10. > :01:16.fire using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets. They had to remove a

:01:17. > :01:22.casualty, unfortunately, a fatality from the premises. The fire was in a

:01:23. > :01:29.house just if you yards from the centre of Ambleside. Thousands of

:01:30. > :01:31.visitors are preparing for New Year holidays. We understand his partner

:01:32. > :01:35.was asleep upstairs when the fire alarm went off. She tried to get him

:01:36. > :01:40.out of the property but was unable to do so. Neighbours say he had

:01:41. > :01:45.lived here for about seven years. They described him as kind and even

:01:46. > :01:49.tempered. Many are clearly extremely shocked at what has happened. This

:01:50. > :01:53.afternoon, men were carrying out repairs at the house. Cumbria Fire

:01:54. > :01:56.Service say a full investigation into the cause of the blaze is now

:01:57. > :02:01.underway but they say it was accidental and not malicious. The

:02:02. > :02:15.BBC understands that a faulty heater may have been to blame.

:02:16. > :02:21.The 60`year`old Labour MP was running with his son yesterday when

:02:22. > :02:26.he was taken ill. He was taken to Salford Royal was little by anglers.

:02:27. > :02:33.His family has released a statement and have asked for prayers and

:02:34. > :02:39.privacy. He is a fighter. With the skills of the surgeons, at one of

:02:40. > :02:45.the best hospitals in the country, he will pull through. My thoughts

:02:46. > :02:47.are with his wife and his family. Hopefully we will get some good news

:02:48. > :02:50.in the next few days. A stand`off between armed police and

:02:51. > :02:54.a man, who it's alleged was holding a woman against her will in Burnley,

:02:55. > :02:57.has ended. Officers were called to the property in Escott Gardens at

:02:58. > :03:01.4.30 yesterday afternoon. Within the last hour police say the woman was

:03:02. > :03:04.released unharmed. A 20`year`old man and a 15`year`old boy have been

:03:05. > :03:08.arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment and are currently in

:03:09. > :03:11.police custody. A minute's silence is to be held in

:03:12. > :03:15.memory of Adam pick`up whose body was found yesterday after he went

:03:16. > :03:17.missing on a night out in Manchester. The organisers of the

:03:18. > :03:22.city's New Year celebrations will ask revellers to remember the

:03:23. > :03:25.17`year`old from Stockport. A large sinkhole's appeared in part

:03:26. > :03:28.of the Peak District in Derbyshire. The hole, on farmland near the

:03:29. > :03:33.village of Foolow, is over 150 feet wide. It's thought the earth

:03:34. > :03:41.movement could be connected to underground caverns and mining

:03:42. > :03:44.activity in the area in the past. The broadcaster Geoffrey Wheeler has

:03:45. > :03:50.died in Cheshire aged 80. He was best known for presenting BBC shows

:03:51. > :04:04.including songs of praise. He died yesterday after a long illness.

:04:05. > :04:08.Now, humbled, ecstatic and close to tears. The reactions of a host of

:04:09. > :04:09.names from the North West who've been recognised in the New Year's

:04:10. > :04:12.been recognised in the New Year s honours list. Among them is the

:04:13. > :04:16.chief executive of Salford Royal Hospital, who's the only person in

:04:17. > :04:19.the region to receive a Knighthood and a couple from Oldham who have

:04:20. > :04:22.fostered more than 150 children. For 30 years, fostering children has

:04:23. > :04:25.been a career and a pleasure for Glenys and Harold Cockroft from

:04:26. > :04:28.Oldham. They've even spent weeks living in hospital to care for sick

:04:29. > :04:32.children. They're to be rewarded with an MBE. It is nice. It is a

:04:33. > :04:35.shock. We are very proud, aren't we? We don't do it for no reward, just

:04:36. > :04:44.for the children. The reward is seeing those children happy. Just

:04:45. > :04:47.happy. Also collecting an MBE will be the founder of the Kinder

:04:48. > :04:51.Children's Choir of the High Peak, Joyce Ellis from Derbyshire. The

:04:52. > :05:01.choir takes children of all abilities, regardless of cost. I am

:05:02. > :05:05.conscious that children are typecast in many way if they cannot sing by

:05:06. > :05:10.the time they are eight, then they don't sing at all. We don't

:05:11. > :05:17.audition. I think that is really important. Auditioning is not

:05:18. > :05:20.appropriate all the time. Staying with music, the Liverpool born world

:05:21. > :05:22.famous conductor Sir Simon Rattle is awarded an Order of Merit. And Sir

:05:23. > :05:24.Peter Maxwell`Davies, the Queen s Peter Maxwell`Davies, the Queen's

:05:25. > :05:27.official composer who was born in Salford, will be made a Companion of

:05:28. > :05:32.Honour. Restaurant owners, sisters Lisa and Helen Tse from Oldham, will

:05:33. > :05:35.collect an MBE. Becoming a knight is David Dalton, the Chief Executive of

:05:36. > :05:40.Salford Royal Hospital, which was recently named the north of

:05:41. > :05:43.England's Trust of the Year. While in Lancashire, Blackpool nightclub

:05:44. > :05:48.entrepreneur Basil Newby gains an MBE. For him, and all the others on

:05:49. > :05:57.the honour's list, it's a New Year to celebrate.

:05:58. > :06:01.Manchester's big wheel has returned to the city. Piccadilly Gardens will

:06:02. > :06:08.be the new home for the wheel which offers rides in 42 boards. It will

:06:09. > :06:09.host tonight 's fire display and `` firework display and will remain

:06:10. > :06:18.there until 2015. Good evening. We started New Year's

:06:19. > :06:22.Eve with a huge band of rain and we have two flood warnings from the

:06:23. > :06:25.Environment Agency in force. But if you are out and about in the next

:06:26. > :06:30.few hours, you can expect to see some hefty showers. The work `` they

:06:31. > :06:37.are working their way in from the West. The wind is also picking up,

:06:38. > :06:40.near gale force by Dawn. Fewer showers and temperatures will be

:06:41. > :06:43.down to two or three Celsius by Dawn. For the first day of 2014 I'm

:06:44. > :06:47.Dawn. For the first day of 2014, I'm afraid we are going to started with

:06:48. > :06:52.a yellow weather warning from The Met office. We do start off fairly

:06:53. > :06:59.dry and fairly cloudy. That rain begins to work in from the

:07:00. > :07:02.south`west. Some heavy pulses of rain through the afternoon and the

:07:03. > :07:05.winds will continue to pick up, particularly around the Isle of Man,

:07:06. > :07:10.where we could see winds close to gale force. By late afternoon, we

:07:11. > :07:12.are left with heavy showers. Temperatures close to nine or 10

:07:13. > :07:17.Temperatures close to nine or 1 Celsius. On Thursday, it is drier,

:07:18. > :07:22.hopefully sunnier of the first week of the New Year will bring lots of

:07:23. > :07:25.rain and strong winds. BBC Radio Cumbria, Lancashire, Manchester and

:07:26. > :07:32.Merseyside will keep you regularly updated. That's our last programme

:07:33. > :07:39.for 2013. We are back at one o'clock tomorrow. Happy New

:07:40. > :07:44.Good evening. It looks like mother nature may provide her own

:07:45. > :07:49.pyrotechnics in the run-up to bid night tonight. We have some heavy

:07:50. > :07:55.showers in western parts, starting to ease a bit across Scotland and

:07:56. > :07:59.Northern Ireland. But the showers further south are heavier, with some

:08:00. > :08:03.flashes of lightning as they move eastwards. They do get a bit more

:08:04. > :08:08.hit and miss as we head towards midnight, but a greater chance of

:08:09. > :08:13.getting wet in the south as we move into 2014. Cardiff and London could

:08:14. > :08:19.see heavy downpours. Further north, you could be greeting the New Year

:08:20. > :08:20.on a dry note. A touch of
