:00:00. > :00:12.2014 in the traditional way. There's 2014 in the traditional way. There's

:00:13. > :00:15.Good evening. Merseyside Police are urgently

:00:16. > :00:19.appealing for witnesses after a man was attacked and critically injured

:00:20. > :00:22.on his way home from a New Year s Eve party. Detectives say

:00:23. > :00:26.40`year`old Michael Cunliffe was the victim of what appears to have been

:00:27. > :00:36.a random, unprovoked attack. Lindsey Prosser reports.

:00:37. > :00:41.Say we are tagged here on the way home from a party. He stopped to a

:00:42. > :00:45.group of people, and was then punched to the ground in an

:00:46. > :00:48.unprovoked attack. The no time to defend himself. The group of

:00:49. > :00:55.individuals talking to Mr Cunliffe prior to the attack did come to his

:00:56. > :00:58.aid afterwards and offer first aid, which is credible conduct. I would

:00:59. > :01:02.appeal to those individuals in the first instance to come and speak to

:01:03. > :01:06.the police and give us an account of what happened. At the moment, we

:01:07. > :01:11.have no motive whatsoever. Also it is a busy thoroughfare. There are a

:01:12. > :01:14.of people milling around and cars driving around, so anyone who was in

:01:15. > :01:18.the locality at the time and saw this take place, I would appeal for

:01:19. > :01:23.them to come forward and contact police. Police say Mr Cunliffe's

:01:24. > :01:27.partner and teenage son keeping a vigil at his bedside and are

:01:28. > :01:30.desperate for any information. Detectives investigating the death

:01:31. > :01:33.of a woman found at a house in Warrington have arrested a

:01:34. > :01:37.38`year`old man. Police called to Knutsford Road in Latchford at :45

:01:38. > :01:42.last night discovered the body of a 34`year`old woman. They're treating

:01:43. > :01:46.her death as suspicious. Three members of staff at North West

:01:47. > :01:49.Ambulance Service were assaulted during last night's celebrations.

:01:50. > :01:55.Paramedics were called to more than 2,000 incidents across the region

:01:56. > :02:00.between midnight and 6am. One of the worst was a fight in Skelmersdale

:02:01. > :02:03.involving as many as 20 people. Football, and Manchester City are

:02:04. > :02:08.still second in the Premier League, just one point behind Arsenal, after

:02:09. > :02:11.winning 3`2 at Swansea. The Blues' goals came from Fernandinho, who

:02:12. > :02:13.struck after just 13 minutes, Yaya Toure, who made it 2`1 with a

:02:14. > :02:22.deflected shot, and Alexander Kolarov, who beat the keeper after a

:02:23. > :02:26.run which started in his own half. Meanwhile, Liverpool's 2`0 win over

:02:27. > :02:28.Hull means they go fourth. Everton drop to fifth after being held to a

:02:29. > :02:30.1`1 draw at Stoke. Hull means they go fourth. Everton

:02:31. > :02:37.drop to fifth after And in the :30 kick off, it's Manchester United 0,

:02:38. > :02:41.Spurs 1. Now here's a rather extreme way to

:02:42. > :02:44.get rid of that New Year hangover. 100 swimmers dived into Salford

:02:45. > :02:47.Quays for charity today. They braved the cold water to raise money for

:02:48. > :03:00.the children's unit at Tameside Hospital. Naomi Cornwell reports.

:03:01. > :03:04.These brave souls opted to start 2014 by dunking themselves in dock

:03:05. > :03:07.nine. The water temperature is just five degrees, and there is a

:03:08. > :03:11.bitterly cold wind, but that has not deterred them. It was all the idea

:03:12. > :03:14.of a nurse from Tameside Hospital who wanted to raise money for the

:03:15. > :03:18.children's unit where she works It's going to go towards the

:03:19. > :03:21.children's unit, because it is fantastic to have the extra

:03:22. > :03:25.equipment during the winter. It will be brilliant. You drop in, and your

:03:26. > :03:31.first reaction is to have an intense heat, it is your body's mechanism to

:03:32. > :03:35.try and heat itself. You have each gym and is burning sensation. You

:03:36. > :03:41.just feel completely alive. Every sense, every nerve ending is

:03:42. > :03:46.singing, so it is indescribably lovely.
