:00:00. > :00:18.Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight. Our top story.

:00:19. > :00:23.Ten years on from the cockling tragedy in Morecambe Bay, we speak

:00:24. > :00:28.to the only survivor. I tried to swim through the channel. I thought,

:00:29. > :00:36.am I going to die? 23 Chinese cockle pickers drowned after being trapped

:00:37. > :00:39.by the tides. Also tonight: Could Blackpool become the first place to

:00:40. > :00:42.ban alcohol sales in the early hours.

:00:43. > :00:49.Sixty days of sharks and storms ` the Bolton boys who survived their

:00:50. > :00:54.Atlantic challenge. Hold on tight as we take you to new

:00:55. > :01:00.heights in the Lake District. And we are live on stage at the magister

:01:01. > :01:08.arena where 7000 children prepare for a performance.

:01:09. > :01:14.Everyone here had heard the stories about Morecambe Bay. Tides quicker

:01:15. > :01:18.than a running horse. Quicksands and channels to claim the unwary. But in

:01:19. > :01:24.February 2004, the world became aware of its truly lethal danger.

:01:25. > :01:29.That was when 23 Chinese cockle pickers drowned after being trapped

:01:30. > :01:33.by the tides. This week marks the 10th anniversary of that disaster.

:01:34. > :01:40.With the first of three special reports into the cockle tragedy

:01:41. > :01:44.here's Peter Marshall. Well these are images forever etched

:01:45. > :01:48.on the minds of anyone who was at the scene of that developing tragedy

:01:49. > :01:52.on the 5th of February, 2004. The sands of Morecambe bay had been the

:01:53. > :01:56.epicentre of a rush for valuable cockles. But the human cost would

:01:57. > :01:59.prove immeasurable. 23 people ` Chinese illegal immigrants with

:02:00. > :02:04.families back home ` washed to their deaths. Only one man would be pulled

:02:05. > :02:12.alive from the waters that night ` his story a potent reminder of the

:02:13. > :02:14.bay's ever`present danger. Morecambe Bay ` both beautiful and

:02:15. > :02:49.brutal. We have visual with one person only,

:02:50. > :02:51.on a sandbank. Ten years have passed but time is not diminished the

:02:52. > :02:57.painful memories of one who survived.

:02:58. > :03:01.TRANSLATION: I tried to swim through the channel,

:03:02. > :03:05.but I couldn't do it. I thought Obama parents. I wondered, am I

:03:06. > :03:09.going to die? Li Hua was the only person rescued

:03:10. > :03:15.alive from the waters that night. He now lives under witness protection

:03:16. > :03:23.with a new identity. He gave evidence in the trial. He was very

:03:24. > :03:28.nearly the 24th victim. When did you realise you were in great danger?

:03:29. > :03:34.TRANSLATION: It was when the water covered the

:03:35. > :03:38.wheel. Everyone was panicking. We try to swim but the water was

:03:39. > :03:45.flowing so quickly, some were dragged under it straightaway. I was

:03:46. > :03:53.in despair. I thought, am I going to die tonight. I thought about my

:03:54. > :04:02.parents and my wife and my child. I just couldn't understand why God

:04:03. > :04:07.would do this to me. He stripped off his waterproofs, struggled and

:04:08. > :04:14.stumbled in the darkness. I thought I might just as well wait to die.

:04:15. > :04:18.Then, I don't know how, wave may be turned me around, I was on my own

:04:19. > :04:30.and in Sharrow `` was in shallow water. I kept praying and praying. I

:04:31. > :04:40.kept waving. They did not seem to see me. But then, they stopped. Li

:04:41. > :04:46.Hua has rebuilt his life together with the wife and son he feared he

:04:47. > :04:53.would never see again. My family are all healthy and we are happy. I have

:04:54. > :04:59.a job. We don't have a lot of money, but we are happy to go through each

:05:00. > :05:07.day peacefully. I am very grateful to the police and the British

:05:08. > :05:10.authorities. I am glad to be alive. The words there of Li Hua, spoken

:05:11. > :05:14.through an interpreter. Tomorrow we'll hear from those who took part

:05:15. > :05:20.in the huge search operation and from the detectives faced with

:05:21. > :05:24.unravelling just who was to blame. And the full story on tonight's

:05:25. > :05:30.Inside Out North West on BBC One at 7:30pm.

:05:31. > :05:32.A mother has appeared in court charged with murdering her

:05:33. > :05:36.seven`week`old son in Oldham. Katarzyna Gacek is accused of

:05:37. > :05:40.killing her son Thomas last week. She is also accused of assault or

:05:41. > :05:44.ill`treatment of a child. The 24`year`old was remanded in custody

:05:45. > :05:57.to appear before Crown Court. Two men, aged 35 and 26, also appeared

:05:58. > :06:01.charged with child neglect. Survivors of the Hillsborough

:06:02. > :06:07.disaster say they were intimidated by police from the independent force

:06:08. > :06:10.asked to investigate the disaster. According to an investigation by

:06:11. > :06:21.Newsnight, fans have come forward to ask our West Midlands Police took

:06:22. > :06:25.their statements. A clean`up operation is under way on

:06:26. > :06:28.the Isle of Man as high tides and strong winds lead to more flooding

:06:29. > :06:31.in coastal areas today. Numerous roads, including Douglas Promenade,

:06:32. > :06:34.that you can see here, were closed for most of the afternoon to keep

:06:35. > :06:38.traffic and pedestrians away. Jurors in the William Roache trial

:06:39. > :06:41.have been told to leave emotion out of their decision making. The trial

:06:42. > :06:46.judge made the comments while summing up the evidence in the

:06:47. > :06:51.actor's trial. Our chief reporter Dave Guest is at

:06:52. > :06:56.Preston Crown Court. You have been there most days of the trial, the

:06:57. > :07:02.time is almost here for the jury to retire and consider its verdict

:07:03. > :07:08.Yes, that was the message to the jury from the judge. He told them

:07:09. > :07:11.they would be hearing no further evidence and the time would soon

:07:12. > :07:15.come when they would have to assess and examine the evidence that they

:07:16. > :07:18.have heard during the three weeks of the trial. They would have to sit

:07:19. > :07:25.down and decide what they believed in what they didn't. And who they

:07:26. > :07:29.did not believe. William Roach arrived at court

:07:30. > :07:35.knowing that his trial is entering the final stages. Five women accused

:07:36. > :07:39.the actor of molesting them as teenagers in the 1980s. He denies

:07:40. > :07:44.it. That, says the judge, is at the heart of this case. He told the jury

:07:45. > :07:50.there is a conflict of evidence which they must resolve. He added,

:07:51. > :07:53.you must assess the witnesses, bringing together your experience,

:07:54. > :07:59.knowledge of the world and common sense. You must decide whether you

:08:00. > :08:02.accept all, some, or none of what witnesses say. The judge said the

:08:03. > :08:08.case have probably aroused emotions but emotions had no place in the

:08:09. > :08:12.decision`making process. He pointed out that the prosecution had to

:08:13. > :08:17.prove guilt, not for the defendant to prove his innocence. He added

:08:18. > :08:21.that if they were sure he was guilty, the verdict must be guilty.

:08:22. > :08:26.If they were not sure, the verdict must be not guilty. So, tomorrow

:08:27. > :08:31.morning, the judge will continue with the final part of his summing

:08:32. > :08:39.up. He said he expects to send out the jury to consider their verdict

:08:40. > :08:44.in the afternoon. He denies four charges of indecent assault and two

:08:45. > :08:47.charges of rape. Cumbria's former Chief Constable has

:08:48. > :08:49.broken his silence about his yearlong suspension from the force

:08:50. > :08:52.following allegations of misconduct. Stuart Hyde was cleared of all

:08:53. > :08:59.charges, but in an exclusive interview on tonight's Inside Out on

:09:00. > :09:05.BBC One, he says he's not satisfied. It does not feel like a fair process

:09:06. > :09:11.at all. It feels like a one`sided view. People that made allegations,

:09:12. > :09:15.their allegations have been treated as correct without any opportunity

:09:16. > :09:17.for me to address them. Next tonight, Blackpool could

:09:18. > :09:20.restrict opening hours and roll back 24 hour drinking if an application

:09:21. > :09:24.by Lancashire Police is successful The force has applied for an EMRO `

:09:25. > :09:35.an Early Morning Restriction Order ` that would ban the sale of Alcohol

:09:36. > :09:39.at certain times. This is how the night ends for some

:09:40. > :09:44.` the result of too much alcohol ` so is the answer to ban its sale in

:09:45. > :09:46.the early hours? Today Blackpool Council's licensing committee heard

:09:47. > :09:49.an application from Lancashire Police for an EMRO ` Early Morning

:09:50. > :10:00.Restriction Order. This B owner gave evidence and is in favour. The

:10:01. > :10:05.weekend is a nightmare. It is full drinking after three o'clock that

:10:06. > :10:14.now continues. There are swarms of people, anti`social elements. The

:10:15. > :10:20.order would prevent alcohol sale between three and 6am ` although

:10:21. > :10:27.opening hours would not change. 22 out of the town's 1377 licensees

:10:28. > :10:35.would be affected. The police say that the area would `` where would

:10:36. > :10:39.apply accounts for 35% of all violent crime in Blackpool.

:10:40. > :10:41.Lancashire Police say it is not about punishing individual

:10:42. > :10:51.businesses. It is an attempt to `` to address an imbalance. Reducing

:10:52. > :10:59.opening hours was recently trialled in St Helens where incidents far by

:11:00. > :11:05.72%. They used to be a doorman at one of the nightclubs, so I can see

:11:06. > :11:12.the benefits. I am happy for them to do everything they can. Back in

:11:13. > :11:15.Blackpool, the owner of the biggest nightclub is one of the strongest

:11:16. > :11:21.opponents. We have to compete with other places and we compete by

:11:22. > :11:26.having great facilities. We do not want to be disadvantaged by having

:11:27. > :11:36.to close early. The early `` the hearing is expected to end to carry

:11:37. > :11:41.on to the end of the week. Still to come, 60 days of sharks and

:11:42. > :11:46.storms. We will be chatting to Bolton boys who survived the

:11:47. > :11:57.Atlantic Road. And the launch of Super League 014.

:11:58. > :12:03.A lot of boys in the second half of this programme!

:12:04. > :12:09.They spent almost 60 days at sea, surviving storms and a catastrophic

:12:10. > :12:15.problems with the boat and even a capsized mid`ocean. Now they are

:12:16. > :12:19.celebrating in the Caribbean. There are some flash photography in this

:12:20. > :12:24.report. Bobbing along on the beautiful

:12:25. > :12:27.briny. An adventure for Mark Brocklehurst, Nick Griffiths, Matt

:12:28. > :12:35.Nuttall and Finn Christo. The Bolton Atlantic challenge is about to set

:12:36. > :12:41.off from the Canary Islands. This is for the Bolton Lads and Girls Club.

:12:42. > :12:53.We spotted a problem there. We want to do this for a friend of ours He

:12:54. > :12:58.was going to be one of the crew He died in a plane crash in Nepal. Said

:12:59. > :13:05.to be the world's toughest rowing race, it took them across the

:13:06. > :13:11.Caribbean to the island of Antigua. It was over 3000 miles of open

:13:12. > :13:22.ocean. The waves towered over us and crashed on top of us. We were

:13:23. > :13:26.inverted. 59 days, 18 hours, four minutes and nine seconds after

:13:27. > :13:29.leaving the Canaries... A warm Bolton welcome at the quayside in

:13:30. > :13:35.Antigua for Mark Brocklehurst, Nick Griffiths, Matt Nuttall and Finn

:13:36. > :13:42.Christo. They should have been here in January but he is here now, so

:13:43. > :13:47.that is fantastic. 16 team started the race. The boys from Bolton

:13:48. > :13:53.finished the rate. Four birds have to be abandoned, while other teams

:13:54. > :14:03.have yet to arrive in Antigua. Well done to them.

:14:04. > :14:11.Standing the test of time is an overused phrase. GL Robertson has

:14:12. > :14:15.been an institution in the city It started out as a pharmacy but

:14:16. > :14:21.branched out to the newfangled craze of photography.

:14:22. > :14:31.It has assessed its last print and shut up shop.

:14:32. > :14:38.It is 1796. King George III is king. Spain declares war on Britain and a

:14:39. > :14:46.pharmacy is" best. This is Cheapside, where the old pharmacy

:14:47. > :14:54.used to be. `` a pharmacy is opened up in Lancashire. Most geographers

:14:55. > :14:58.`` most photographers were doing their own work with chemicals that

:14:59. > :15:06.could only be bought from the local chemists. This is my other camera, a

:15:07. > :15:12.Kodak folding camera. Times changed and the shop moved here. Reg Stodden

:15:13. > :15:19.started working in the chop from the 1960s but soon bought the building.

:15:20. > :15:27.`` he bought the shop. When I started, I was using the touring

:15:28. > :15:33.cameras. Then I have used cameras manufactured over a period of 1 0

:15:34. > :15:42.years. But now he is retiring. Nobody wants the business. It is a

:15:43. > :15:48.shame to see it go. Very sad, very disappointing. All the family are

:15:49. > :15:52.interested in photography. Not bad for a 200`year`old business from

:15:53. > :15:59.pharmacy to photography. Who would have thought.

:16:00. > :16:02.The end of an era. Football now There is a big game tonight. And

:16:03. > :16:06.tonight the unstoppable force meets the immovable object in what

:16:07. > :16:11.promises to be an explosive match at the Etihad. The Premier League's

:16:12. > :16:14.most prolific scorers ` second placed Manchester City ` take on

:16:15. > :16:21.third placed Chelsea. Richard Askam is at the stadium now.

:16:22. > :16:26.I imagine it is all getting very exciting down there? You can always

:16:27. > :16:35.tell when the fans think it is a pivotal fixture `` fixture, because

:16:36. > :16:40.there is an edge in the night. It is the best scorers against the meanest

:16:41. > :16:45.defence in Chelsea. The two managers do not particularly get on. They

:16:46. > :16:49.have a long history going back to their time in Spain. Jose Mourinho

:16:50. > :16:52.has been playing mind games. He has been saying things like, with all

:16:53. > :17:02.their money, city should have one more trophies. Manuel Pellegrini is

:17:03. > :17:10.not rising to it. I think we have two points more. It is not only a

:17:11. > :17:15.race against Chelsea. There are chances to get the title so at this

:17:16. > :17:22.moment of this it `` of the season, we are thinking about improving

:17:23. > :17:26.everything. We are going to try to win. We are not going to change our

:17:27. > :17:33.philosophy. We are going in a certain direction and we are not

:17:34. > :17:41.changing because of one game against a certain opponent. In the

:17:42. > :17:44.Championship, Burnley continued the pressure for automatic promotion

:17:45. > :17:57.with a 3`3 draw away to second placed QPR. The clarets equalised

:17:58. > :18:01.twice. But wins Park Rangers `` Queens Park Rangers share the

:18:02. > :18:04.points. Blackburn's kept alive play`off hopes with a 2`0 win over

:18:05. > :18:07.managerless Blackpool. Veteran midfielder David Dunn opened the

:18:08. > :18:10.scoring in the first half with this. Grant Hanley got a late second.

:18:11. > :18:13.Wigan continued their great run under new boss Uwe Rosler. Late

:18:14. > :18:23.goals from Marc`Antoine Fortune and Jordi Gomez ensured a two`one win

:18:24. > :18:27.over Charlton. If you're a fan of one of our Super League teams you

:18:28. > :18:30.won't need me to tell you the long wait is nearly over. The new season

:18:31. > :18:33.will get underway on Friday when Champions Wigan Warriors kick off

:18:34. > :18:36.against Huddersfield Giants. Well today was the official launch for

:18:37. > :18:41.the new campaign and it certainly got the juices flowing.

:18:42. > :18:44.The men hoping to lead their team to Super League glory. And you can be

:18:45. > :18:57.sure there'll plenty of bumps and bruises along the way.

:18:58. > :19:05.Changes to the way the game has been structured come into play this

:19:06. > :19:07.season. In particular the return of promotion and relegation. The North

:19:08. > :19:14.West's five top division teams all have different targets. It will make

:19:15. > :19:18.it a tougher competition. There `` it will be a lot more competitive.

:19:19. > :19:25.When you are playing a team towards the bottom, they are fighting for

:19:26. > :19:27.their lives. The Northwest's five top division teams all have

:19:28. > :19:32.different targets. Wigan, double winners last season, to do it again.

:19:33. > :19:36.Warrington Wolves pipped at the post in the final to finally make this

:19:37. > :19:39.the year they win that elusive title. Much fancied St Helens to

:19:40. > :19:43.bring the glory days back. Salford, with 14 new players, to challenge

:19:44. > :19:53.for the first time. And Widnes to keep on improving. We brought in two

:19:54. > :19:57.or three players to make a stronger throughout the year. We need a bit

:19:58. > :20:02.of luck. The depth of our squad is not fantastic. And with the

:20:03. > :20:09.relegation trapdoor the battle at top and bottom could be even more

:20:10. > :20:14.intense than ever. It promises to be a fascinating

:20:15. > :20:18.season. Because of that promotion and relegation coming in, it will be

:20:19. > :20:24.very competitive indeed. Good luck to all of our teams.

:20:25. > :20:35.Absolutely. Any team news for tonight? No! Not yet. The teams come

:20:36. > :20:41.out shortly and I will be first with that. But we know there are a couple

:20:42. > :20:46.of key players missing. Sergio Aguero, top scorer, out with a

:20:47. > :20:52.hamstring problem for four to five weeks. Also Nasri, who has been

:20:53. > :20:57.playing well. But Manchester City are not short of reinforcements

:20:58. > :21:03.Negredo is likely to be upfront tonight.

:21:04. > :21:12.Annabel was tried elegantly guide you towards telling us that! Will

:21:13. > :21:19.Chelsea come to park the bus? Just hit us on the counterattack? Jose

:21:20. > :21:22.Mourinho was complaining that West Ham's football was 19th century

:21:23. > :21:27.football because of the way they parked the bus against his Chelsea.

:21:28. > :21:31.But he is no stranger to playing that defensive way. The meanest

:21:32. > :21:36.defence in the Premier League. It is safe to say that Chelsea will not be

:21:37. > :21:40.open tonight. There is full commentary on BBC Radio Manchester.

:21:41. > :21:47.One City player highly recommends it. Brazilian Fernandinho says he

:21:48. > :22:07.listens to the station on the way to training sessions to learn English.

:22:08. > :22:10.Of course he does! The voices of seven thousand

:22:11. > :22:12.children will fill one of Manchester's biggest venues tonight.

:22:13. > :22:15.Young Voices is aimed at bringing together children from across the

:22:16. > :22:17.region and boosting their confidence.

:22:18. > :22:20.And as if performing in an arena used by the likes of Beyonce and

:22:21. > :22:29.Robbie Williams wasn't exciting enough, they'll be singing with the

:22:30. > :22:35.X Factor's Stacey Solomon. There are loads of people there

:22:36. > :22:43.Annabel, this is the pen amuck `` the pinnacle of my career. But these

:22:44. > :22:50.lovely children, 7000 children, are. They are about to perform as

:22:51. > :22:53.part of the young voices event. It is for children around the Northwest

:22:54. > :23:20.to give them confidence. They are excited tonight. They will be

:23:21. > :23:28.singing, dancing, their sign language to. They wouldn't `` they

:23:29. > :23:35.will be performing with Stacey Solomon who made a name on the X

:23:36. > :23:39.Factor. It is a bit scary knowing that you have got all these people

:23:40. > :23:44.watching. I think we will get nervous. When our parents come,

:23:45. > :23:49.there are 10,000 parents coming I am still nervous. It has been

:23:50. > :23:55.fantastic and I'm excited for the concert. You heard from some of the

:23:56. > :24:02.children who will be performing from Bolton and St Andrews. Let's have a

:24:03. > :24:08.word with the man who is trying to coordinate all this. 7000 children,

:24:09. > :24:16.what could possibly go wrong? ! Well, we have been doing this for 17

:24:17. > :24:23.years of. It is 7000 kids each day, over the three days. It is such a

:24:24. > :24:26.special occasion for everyone. So good that you are doing it the next

:24:27. > :24:34.two nights with different children as well? Exactly, with all their

:24:35. > :24:37.mums and dads to support them. It certainly seems to have boosted

:24:38. > :24:42.their confidence. They are in fine voice.

:24:43. > :24:47.What a fantastic opportunity. Straight onto the weather.

:24:48. > :24:56.Very unsettled over the weekend It was a bit better on Sunday. The

:24:57. > :25:00.weekend `` the week ahead will also be unsettled. Sunshine and showers

:25:01. > :25:04.and then very wet and windy on Wednesday. A bit quieter at the end

:25:05. > :25:09.of the week. But we are expecting rain on Friday. As for tonight, you
