:00:00. > :00:09.Hello and welcome to the programme. The headlines...

:00:10. > :00:18.Jail for the gang leader who masterminded the smuggling of ? 00

:00:19. > :00:23.million of drugs while in prison. This man and his network spread

:00:24. > :00:25.across the north`west of England. We were supplying wholesale drugs to

:00:26. > :00:28.suppliers. 22 of his accomplices, all from the

:00:29. > :00:34.North West, are also behind bars. Also tonight...

:00:35. > :00:39.The wheel of fortune but is Liverpool a step nearer a bigger

:00:40. > :00:44.share of the UK's EuroMillions? This may be a little

:00:45. > :00:47.uncomfortable... We're with Blackburn's new Chief Nurse as she

:00:48. > :01:00.tries to turn a failing hospital around. It is the first game of the

:01:01. > :01:04.new super league season. I talk to the Head Coach of Wigan Warriors

:01:05. > :01:07.later. I talked to a little boy who has

:01:08. > :01:20.given up his bed for the night to help the children of Syria.

:01:21. > :01:24.At gang which import cocaine worth ?100 million to be sold across the

:01:25. > :01:28.Northwest is beginning a prison sentence totalling 217 years

:01:29. > :01:33.tonight. 23 people were involved in the drugs ring that spread across

:01:34. > :01:37.the region. Warrington Crown Court heard it was coordinated by a career

:01:38. > :01:43.criminal who was being held at a prison in Lancashire at the time.

:01:44. > :01:48.500 kilos of cocaine worth ?100 million. It was imported by a

:01:49. > :01:53.network of organised criminals spread across the north`west. At its

:01:54. > :01:58.centre was this man Richard Brickhouse. He was already serving a

:01:59. > :02:03.22 year sentence for importing heroin and cocaine. He used mobile

:02:04. > :02:06.phones snuggled into prison to run his latest drugs business. When he

:02:07. > :02:10.was given periods at home leave to prepare him for his release from

:02:11. > :02:16.prison, he used that to hold meetings with his co`conspirators.

:02:17. > :02:19.He was helped by his wife Diane The court heard she enjoyed an

:02:20. > :02:23.extravagant and indulgent lifestyle, receiving expensive

:02:24. > :02:27.handbags and a new car from him and spending thousands of pounds on

:02:28. > :02:33.haircuts and Botox treatment, despite claiming to be reliant on

:02:34. > :02:39.benefits. She drove him to meetings with drug dealers across the region.

:02:40. > :02:43.Working closely with the prison service and monitoring behaviour, we

:02:44. > :02:47.were able to track his movements and see him eating other high`profile

:02:48. > :02:52.organised criminals. That led to a significant seizure of ?12 million

:02:53. > :02:56.worth of socket `` gave in April last year. Paul and Stephen Harwood

:02:57. > :02:59.from Manchester with a careers. They were stopped in Essex on their way

:03:00. > :03:04.back from France, having used a fishing trip as a cover. Police

:03:05. > :03:10.found 78 kilos of cocaine and two kilos of heroin. The gang clearly

:03:11. > :03:16.supplied half a tonne of cocaine with a potential street value of

:03:17. > :03:20.?100 million. This is a massive hole. It is a dent in the organised

:03:21. > :03:25.criminal network across the North West. A total of 23 people have

:03:26. > :03:31.convicted in relation to the investigation. Today, it teamed up

:03:32. > :03:33.them were sentenced to a total of 217 years in prison. Richard

:03:34. > :03:42.Brickhouse was sentenced to 20 years. Meanwhile two men have been

:03:43. > :03:46.charged near after nearly ?8 million of class a and class B drugs were

:03:47. > :03:50.seized by police near Sandbach yesterday. Man will appear before

:03:51. > :04:01.Manchester Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

:04:02. > :04:04.The Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, has today defended the

:04:05. > :04:08.decision to take Bill Roache to court on sex charges. It's right, he

:04:09. > :04:10.says, to let a jury decide when there's a reasonable chance of a

:04:11. > :04:13.conviction. The Coronation Street actor was cleared yesterday. One of

:04:14. > :04:17.his friends, Christine Hamilton the wife of the former Tatton MP Neil

:04:18. > :04:21.Hamilton, is calling for anonymity for those accused of rape. She told

:04:22. > :04:23.me how she felt when the she heard the verdict. I was absolutely

:04:24. > :04:26.delighted. I never doubted him for an instant. But when you have a

:04:27. > :04:30.court case and a jury there is always room for error. I am

:04:31. > :04:34.thrilled. He always looked very composed when he was walking to

:04:35. > :04:39.court but it must have been true Matic. Unbelievable. He has been

:04:40. > :04:44.through a living hell for almost one year. He has great inner strength.

:04:45. > :04:47.He has a wonderful supportive network of family and friends and

:04:48. > :04:51.that enabled him to get through plus knowing he was innocent. It is

:04:52. > :05:17.something he will have to live with for the rest of his life and that

:05:18. > :05:20.will always be there, because unfortunately there will be people

:05:21. > :05:22.who think no smoke without fire You have been through something like

:05:23. > :05:24.this because you and your husband were accused of something similar

:05:25. > :05:27.around ten years ago. We were accused of rape and we went through

:05:28. > :05:29.the entire process and had our house searched and everything seized. We

:05:30. > :05:32.were arrested. It was absolutely ghastly but the police fortunately

:05:33. > :05:35.backed off before we got as far as court. Should those who are accused

:05:36. > :05:37.in joy, just as the accused? It is a difficult question. We have two ends

:05:38. > :05:39.of the spectrum which everyone agrees, firstly that no rape should

:05:40. > :05:42.go unpunished and that no innocent man should have to go through what

:05:43. > :05:45.William Roache has gone through How we meet that in the middle is very

:05:46. > :05:50.difficult. What I would like see, up the least, is people who are accused

:05:51. > :05:55.have anonymity at least until they have actually charged, but on the

:05:56. > :05:59.other hand, we must not be anything to deter genuine rape victims from

:06:00. > :06:04.coming forward. The trauma that a woman has to go through to take

:06:05. > :06:12.something like this to court should not be underestimated. It takes

:06:13. > :06:13.great courage. Hillsborough campaigner Margaret

:06:14. > :06:16.Aspinall has expressed concerns about the possible introduction of

:06:17. > :06:19.safe standing areas in the region's football stadia. Football League

:06:20. > :06:21.clubs have backed calls for the introduction of such areas at

:06:22. > :06:24.Championship grounds where all`seater stadiums have been

:06:25. > :06:31.compulsory since an inquiry into the Hillsborough Disaster ` which

:06:32. > :06:36.claimed the lives of 96 fans. If they do bring standing back, we had

:06:37. > :06:42.our warnings. They had plenty of warnings about people being crushed.

:06:43. > :06:49.He did not listen. We lost 96 lives and we were listen to, and brought

:06:50. > :06:52.all`seater stadium. An investigation's underway into how

:06:53. > :06:55.plasterboard fell from a ceiling at a Manchester nightclub in the early

:06:56. > :06:59.hours of this morning. Around 8 0 people were inside Factory 251 at

:07:00. > :07:02.the time and seven were taken to hospital. It's thought a screw head

:07:03. > :07:07.in a piece of plasterboard snapped, causing a large part of it to come

:07:08. > :07:10.free. A High Court judge says he's

:07:11. > :07:13.extremely concerned for the welfare of a Lancashire teenager who may

:07:14. > :07:16.have been forced into marriage overseas. Alyssa Din and her two

:07:17. > :07:19.younger sisters were apparently sent to Pakistan last October because

:07:20. > :07:22.their parents feared they'd be taken into care. Ilyas and Mazeley Din

:07:23. > :07:26.from Preston are currently in prison for refusing to say where they are.

:07:27. > :07:34.The courts took the unusual step of naming the family in the hope of

:07:35. > :07:37.tracing the children. A motor racer from Lancashire who

:07:38. > :07:40.killed a cyclist after talking on his mobile phone whilst driving has

:07:41. > :07:43.been sentenced to 21 months in prison. Frank Wrathall, from

:07:44. > :07:46.Barnacre, had been on the phone to his girlfriend for eight minutes

:07:47. > :07:52.when he hit father`of`one Paul Fingleton on a roundabout near

:07:53. > :07:55.Preston last year. The Chief Constable of Greater

:07:56. > :07:58.Manchester Police, Sir Peter Fahy says he's exasperated by the time

:07:59. > :08:01.spent by officers at the anti`fracking protest site in

:08:02. > :08:04.Salford. Over ?600,000 has already been spent policing the site. It's

:08:05. > :08:11.thought that could reach a million over the next two months.

:08:12. > :08:13.The Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties have defended

:08:14. > :08:16.themselves against accusations they haven't campaigned vigorously enough

:08:17. > :08:19.for next week's by`election in Sale East and Wythenshawe. Labour's Paul

:08:20. > :08:22.Goggins died last month and his party are favourites to hold onto

:08:23. > :08:30.the seat with bookmakers suggesting UKIP could finish second. We have

:08:31. > :08:34.large numbers of volunteers and we had large numbers last weekend. We

:08:35. > :08:40.will be distributing leaflets. We have a very energetic candidate and

:08:41. > :08:44.we have Cabinet members visiting. We have a large number of professional

:08:45. > :08:48.candidates. We want to do well in this by`election and there is no

:08:49. > :08:55.question of treating this constituency in a serious way. I

:08:56. > :08:59.know the Deputy Prime Minister is backing our candidate and he will be

:09:00. > :09:02.in Manchester knocking on doors and beating with residents. That is

:09:03. > :09:05.something you would expect. We are taking this seriously.

:09:06. > :09:07.There are a total of seven candidates contesting the

:09:08. > :09:10.Wythenshawe and Sale East by`election. The full list is on

:09:11. > :09:14.your screen. Polling day is next Thursday. And four of the candidates

:09:15. > :09:18.will be joining Arif in the studio on this week's Sunday Politics. To

:09:19. > :09:27.hear them put their case to be our newest MP, join Arif and the team on

:09:28. > :09:33.Sunday morning at 11am on BBC One. Still to come on North West

:09:34. > :09:36.Tonight... Six months ago, but trust running this hospital was placed in

:09:37. > :09:42.special measures but find out what they are doing to fight back. And

:09:43. > :09:45.the Olympic dream. We need the Northwest hopefuls as they prepare

:09:46. > :09:59.to take on the ice and snow in Sochi. I loved the Winter Olympics.

:10:00. > :10:02.What happened to Liverpool's missing EuroMillions. Today the Mayor

:10:03. > :10:06.accused the Government of legalised robbery. What's more, the High Court

:10:07. > :10:10.appears to have backed him. The High Court has ruled that a 65% cut in EU

:10:11. > :10:18.funding via the Government, needs to be re`considered. Will they see the

:10:19. > :10:22.cash? Here's Jayne McCubbin. Liverpool has been transformed with

:10:23. > :10:26.European money. There have been a number of developments. Where would

:10:27. > :10:31.the city be without it? But then in the latest round of funding, this

:10:32. > :10:37.happened. The government passed on 65% less than the government was

:10:38. > :10:41.expecting, and ?83 million cut. The city said it was daylight robbery by

:10:42. > :10:43.David Cameron was having none of that.

:10:44. > :10:49.We have done very fair assessment, not only between the regions of the

:10:50. > :10:54.United Kingdom but also the nations. We have distributed fairly.

:10:55. > :10:59.So Liverpool took the case to the High Court, not only to fight the

:11:00. > :11:04.cut but also that other more affluent areas were given more.

:11:05. > :11:11.Warrington, 157 euros per person compared to 147 in Liverpool. 1 5 in

:11:12. > :11:16.Manchester and 182 per person in Lancashire and Cumbria. Remember,

:11:17. > :11:19.Liverpool has the lowest GDP of any area in the north`west. The results

:11:20. > :11:24.of the High Court ruling were published and the government has to

:11:25. > :11:28.look again at the decision. I think it is wrong. But the

:11:29. > :11:32.government did was take 150 million from Liverpool and give that to more

:11:33. > :11:39.prosperous regions in the UK. That was wrong. The judge has found that

:11:40. > :11:41.today. I asked the government about the missing Euro millions this

:11:42. > :11:45.evening. A spokesman said the decision might have been technically

:11:46. > :11:51.unlawful but that does not mean it is wrong. This row might involve

:11:52. > :11:54.Euro cash but it is a very domestic political argument. The government

:11:55. > :11:59.will look at this again, but they might come up with the same

:12:00. > :12:10.decision. Jo`Anne Dobson still has a fight on his hands. Thank you.

:12:11. > :12:13.An investigation into our crash in Manchester City centre involving

:12:14. > :12:16.five bosses say it may have been caused by a faulty accelerator. The

:12:17. > :12:20.crash happened during rush hour yesterday morning. Police and

:12:21. > :12:29.transport providers are continuing to investigate. An investigation has

:12:30. > :12:32.been launched on Merseyside after cannabis farm was discovered inside

:12:33. > :12:36.a former community hall. 140 plants were seized from the building in

:12:37. > :12:43.well nearby residents reported a strong smell.

:12:44. > :12:46.A hearing on whether to prevent alcohol sales in Blackpool after 3am

:12:47. > :12:48.has ended. Police have asked the council's licensing committee to

:12:49. > :12:51.introduce a restriction order to curb alcohol`related violence. A

:12:52. > :13:12.recommendation is due next week and the final decision expected by

:13:13. > :13:16.March. Last July it was one of just two in

:13:17. > :13:19.the North West put in special measures following the Keogh report.

:13:20. > :13:22.Among other concerns it highlighted low staffing levels, high mortality

:13:23. > :13:30.rates at the weekends, and a high number of pay`outs for clinical

:13:31. > :13:33.negligence. In October, it was given two formal warnings by the health

:13:34. > :13:36.watchdog the CQC and told to improve after an inspection revealed

:13:37. > :13:38.concerns over patient dignity, care, and record keeping.

:13:39. > :13:42.The personal touch. Today it's back to the floor Friday when senior

:13:43. > :13:45.staff go out to the wards to catchup with how patients and staff are

:13:46. > :13:48.doing. It gives me the opportunity to go out and sit with someone and

:13:49. > :13:50.ask them about their experiences. Our patients receiving the care that

:13:51. > :14:01.matters? If there are problems, I would much prefer to sort these

:14:02. > :14:04.issues out straightaway. This is a new monthly initiative, part of a

:14:05. > :14:07.package of measures to improve communication here. It's been a

:14:08. > :14:10.rough few months for the East Lancashire Hospitals Trust which

:14:11. > :14:12.runs the Royal Blackburn and Burnley General.

:14:13. > :14:15.Last July it was one of just two in the North West put in special

:14:16. > :14:18.measures following the Keogh report. Among other concerns it highlighted

:14:19. > :14:21.low staffing levels, high mortality rates at the weekends, and a high

:14:22. > :14:25.number of pay`outs for clinical negligence. In October, it was given

:14:26. > :14:28.two formal warnings by the health watchdog the CQC and told to improve

:14:29. > :14:30.after an inspection revealed concerns over patient dignity, care,

:14:31. > :14:33.and record keeping. Christine Pearson took on the job of chief

:14:34. > :14:35.nurse a month ago. It is about changing the culture, how people are

:14:36. > :14:38.received at the front door and how they are receiving their care and in

:14:39. > :14:41.the community. We want to provide good community services. People

:14:42. > :14:44.welcomed the move. It is a great idea.

:14:45. > :14:51.Make the quality of care better It is a good thing. You get to know

:14:52. > :14:55.what is going on. It I bad nurses, then they get to know. There are no

:14:56. > :14:59.bad nurses here. The trust knows this is not about

:15:00. > :15:03.altering rules and regulations. It is about changing a culture and that

:15:04. > :15:07.takes time. But they are adamant by the end of this year, the hospitals

:15:08. > :15:17.will be the sort of place as any patient will be happy to spend time

:15:18. > :15:21.on. It's the day Super League fans have

:15:22. > :15:24.been waiting all winter for. The start of the new season with

:15:25. > :15:27.champions Wigan Warriors hosting the Huddersfield Giants. The game has

:15:28. > :15:29.been brought forward to help Wigan prepare for their World Club

:15:30. > :15:33.Challenge tie with Sydney Roosters in Australia in a fortnight. Richard

:15:34. > :15:39.Askam is at the DW Stadium for us. Can the Warriors possibly repeat the

:15:40. > :15:44.success of last season? It will be very difficult. Of course they won

:15:45. > :15:48.the double last season, and the Challenge Cup as well. But talking

:15:49. > :15:53.to supporters there is plenty of optimism here. They are very happy

:15:54. > :15:58.about the start of the new season. All the players that are playing

:15:59. > :16:05.tonight, all of the supporters, they cannot wait to get going. We are

:16:06. > :16:09.joined by the Head Coach Wigan Warriors. Great to see you. On that

:16:10. > :16:14.question, do you think that you can repeat what you did last year? We

:16:15. > :16:22.are going to have a great try. We had a great pre`season. We have

:16:23. > :16:26.players who are staying with us and they are more positive. We are a lot

:16:27. > :16:30.further on down we were this time last year. We will give ourselves a

:16:31. > :16:39.good chance to get trophies again. We go to Australia next week. That

:16:40. > :16:43.would be a really good match. You lost Sam Tomkins but you have bought

:16:44. > :16:48.five new players. Do you believe you can replace him? Yes, he was a great

:16:49. > :16:57.player. But there are different styles. But we have moved and good

:16:58. > :17:05.players who are teaching our young children. All of our players bring

:17:06. > :17:08.an individual quality to the team and the squad. I am happy and

:17:09. > :17:14.confident going into this year. What about the world club challenge tie?

:17:15. > :17:20.You fly out tomorrow. For people who do not know about rugby league, how

:17:21. > :17:23.big a deal is this? Absolutely huge. They are the best team in the super

:17:24. > :17:33.league in great written, laying against the best team in Australia.

:17:34. > :17:37.`` Great Britain. We have beaten them already. It would be a very

:17:38. > :17:41.physical game. We are going over there and we are confident. We will

:17:42. > :17:45.play a warm up game in New Zealand and we are taking it seriously. We

:17:46. > :17:54.are going to go over there and fight the corner for British rugby league.

:17:55. > :17:59.What would it mean to you if you could win that match? Absolutely

:18:00. > :18:04.everything. It would be huge. I have a lot of local people in my team and

:18:05. > :18:08.that means a lot. I will be taking a lot of fans over to Australia. There

:18:09. > :18:12.are lot of Wigan people in Australia. I do not want people to

:18:13. > :18:16.think that we are not going there to win. We are determined to win. It

:18:17. > :18:32.will be a great match. We are behind you. Thank you.

:18:33. > :18:35.Manchester United boss David Moyes says the decision for Nemanja Vedic

:18:36. > :18:38.to leave the club was made by mutual agreement. The 32`year`old Reds

:18:39. > :18:41.captain announced today that he will quit in the summer when his contract

:18:42. > :18:44.ends. The Serbian international won 15 trophies including five Premiere

:18:45. > :18:57.League titles and the Champions League in his eight years at Old

:18:58. > :19:03.Trafford. I want to change in time. I cannot do it overnight. That was

:19:04. > :19:05.not the reason for this. This decision was made by mutual

:19:06. > :19:11.agreement and he felt it was the right time for him. He has been a

:19:12. > :19:17.brilliant player. It will stay that way until the end of the season

:19:18. > :19:20.Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers says the individual talents of Luiz

:19:21. > :19:23.Suarez and Daniel Sturridge will outgun Arsenal in tomorrow's crucial

:19:24. > :19:37.top of the table clash. The Premier League's most prolific partnership

:19:38. > :19:43.has scored 37 goals this season They both have a goal`scoring

:19:44. > :19:46.mentality. They arrived in the same area but how they get there is

:19:47. > :19:54.different. They have different qualities. They are both

:19:55. > :19:57.goal`scorers. They are prolific In Rugby Union, Sale Sharks host

:19:58. > :20:01.Gloucester tonight with 14 changes to the side that narrowly lost to

:20:02. > :20:05.the Ospreys in the LV Cup. Jonathan Mills is the only survivor with

:20:06. > :20:18.Danny Cipriani and Mark Cueto among the big names returning.

:20:19. > :20:21.The dream of competing in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi is about to

:20:22. > :20:24.become a reality for several competitors from the North West

:20:25. > :20:27.We've had the official opening of the Games today and for our nine

:20:28. > :20:31.athletes preparing to take on Russia's snow and ice, this is where

:20:32. > :20:36.it all starts to get serious. These are the region's sledders, skaters
