:00:00. > :00:00.died aged 88. That's all from the BBC News at Six so it's

:00:07. > :00:16.Good evening and welcome to North West Tonight. Our top story: The

:00:17. > :00:23.pellet copter crash in that the helicopter crash in Norfolk. The

:00:24. > :00:31.pilot was from Manchester. New hope for Liam as vital medicines are made

:00:32. > :00:39.available to the severely ill. There could be possibly a queue on the

:00:40. > :00:46.horizon. DNA technology which could solve the mystery of baby to buy

:00:47. > :01:01.macro. I am at the home of Salford red

:01:02. > :01:03.Devils. That and Manchester United versus Liverpool late in thd

:01:04. > :01:18.programme. It has emerged that two othdr for

:01:19. > :01:27.people who died in the helicopter crash in Norfolk last night were

:01:28. > :01:36.from the North West. Pilots and co`pilot have been named. S`fety

:01:37. > :01:42.concerns were raised last Sdptember. This information is just emdrging in

:01:43. > :01:49.the last half hour. Give us the very latest. We know the course, you saw

:01:50. > :02:00.the pictures on network news. It came down in Norfolk. On`bo`rd was

:02:01. > :02:15.Conservative peer, and the pilot and co`pilot, Carl Dickinson and the

:02:16. > :02:22.Dail. `` Lee Doyle. The pilot had raised safety concerns about the

:02:23. > :02:34.helicopter. They issued a writ against the manufacturer about

:02:35. > :02:40.safety concerns. This had bden cited as a potential problem with a

:02:41. > :02:46.helicopter crash in France. It was very foggy when the helicopter came

:02:47. > :02:50.down, and clearly, it is a devastating time for the parents.

:02:51. > :03:00.What more do we know about the men? Cannot pick up on the Fog, we do not

:03:01. > :03:04.know about the cause of the crash. Back to your question about the two

:03:05. > :03:12.men from our patch. We have been able to get more information from

:03:13. > :03:16.their LinkedIn websites. Carl Dickinson has had experiencd of

:03:17. > :03:31.flying very important peopld. The mother of a muscular dystrophy

:03:32. > :03:34.patient from Merseyside says changes in the way new medicines ard

:03:35. > :03:37.approved has given her new hope Joanne Ashton's son Liam was

:03:38. > :03:40.diagnosed with the muscle w`sting disease when he was two. Today the

:03:41. > :03:43.government announced that it's to allow severely ill people to get

:03:44. > :03:46.access to promising new tre`tments before they're fully licensdd. Many

:03:47. > :03:49.people have welcomed the news, though some doctors are worried it

:03:50. > :03:55.may cause more harm than good. Here's Andy Gill.

:03:56. > :04:01.Shall we finish this off? Lham Triggs and his mum build a Lego car

:04:02. > :04:04.at their home in Halewood this afternoon. Liam has Duchennd

:04:05. > :04:06.muscular dystrophy. It means his muscles get progressively wdaker.

:04:07. > :04:17.There's no treatment for thd problem. At the moment, his daily

:04:18. > :04:23.needs are met by me. He has depended on me for dressing him, brushing his

:04:24. > :04:26.teeth. But scientists in Amdrica are working on drugs that may slow down

:04:27. > :04:29.the speed of muscle degener`tion. That's why Joanne welcomes ` change

:04:30. > :04:35.in rules here which could allow patients to get pioneering

:04:36. > :04:38.treatments sooner than they can now. From April a government pandl of

:04:39. > :04:43.scientists can approve promhsing drugs for use before they'rd

:04:44. > :04:51.licensed to be sold. The drtgs would still have to go through clhnical

:04:52. > :04:58.trials. There are no queues, or effective treatments, from these

:04:59. > :05:01.conditions. To have faster `ccess to drugs is very good news. Evdryday

:05:02. > :05:06.counts for people with thesd conditions, so this will spded up to

:05:07. > :05:08.access to new drugs. The government says the scheme will help

:05:09. > :05:12.pharmaceutical firms see how their products work before they'rd used in

:05:13. > :05:15.the NHS, and that could lead to bigger investment. For families like

:05:16. > :05:23.Liam's the human argument f`r outweighs the economic. We `re

:05:24. > :05:27.hopeful. We are hopeful that with this new fast track scheme, people

:05:28. > :05:34.are listening, and there cotld be possible treatment, tears even, on

:05:35. > :05:37.the horizon. `` cures, even. But the Faculty of Public Health saxs

:05:38. > :05:40.patients might be vulnerabld to taking risks with medicines that had

:05:41. > :05:43.not been fully tested and which might cause more harm than good The

:05:44. > :05:57.early access to medicines scheme starts in April. The owners of a

:05:58. > :06:00.Lancashire care home have bden fined after an elderly resident choked to

:06:01. > :06:04.death on fish and chips. An investigation found she shotld only

:06:05. > :06:07.have been given pureed food ` but staff hadn't been told. Rit` Smith,

:06:08. > :06:11.who was 75, had dementia and motor neurone disease when she was

:06:12. > :06:13.admitted to Euxton Park Card Home in Chorley three years ago. Fotr

:06:14. > :06:20.Seasons Health Care were fined ?170,000. The relatives of three

:06:21. > :06:23.former British soldiers frol the North West, who are in jail in India

:06:24. > :06:26.after being arrested on board an American ship, are to delivdr a

:06:27. > :06:29.petition to Downing Street, urging the government to intervene. Paul

:06:30. > :06:32.Towers, originally from Merseyside, Ray Tindall from Chester and John

:06:33. > :06:40.Armstrong from Cumbria, werd on board when the ship was seized by

:06:41. > :06:43.the Indian coastguard. Camp`igners fighting to save the Salford

:06:44. > :06:46.Children's Holiday Camp ` known as the "Butty camp" ` are meethng

:06:47. > :06:49.councillors today with a rescue plan.The site was opened in

:06:50. > :06:52.Prestatyn, North Wales 80 ydars ago, but Salford Council says it can t

:06:53. > :06:56.afford to run it anymore. Those fighting to keep it open sax they've

:06:57. > :07:07.already raised thousands of pounds to help. And the Happy Mond`ys star

:07:08. > :07:10.Bez say he's considering thd possibility of standing as `n MP for

:07:11. > :07:14.Salford next year. Bez, who's 4 and originally from the city, s`ys he's

:07:15. > :07:23.keen to "give something back" and raise awareness of key issuds.

:07:24. > :07:27.The police hope DNA technology will lead them to the parents of a baby

:07:28. > :07:30.girl whose body was found in a country lane exactly one ye`r ago

:07:31. > :07:34.today. The infant was named baby Alia by detectives who've spent the

:07:35. > :07:37.past 12 months trying to find out more about her. This morning a

:07:38. > :07:40.coroner made a fresh appeal for information from the public and

:07:41. > :07:44.described today as a "very sad and significant day". Here's our Chief

:07:45. > :07:50.Reporter, Dave Guest. So wh`t do the police know about baby Alia? They

:07:51. > :07:54.know she was found in this lane ` Ox Hey Lane in Lostock near Bolton

:07:55. > :07:57.exactly one year ago. They know she lived for only two hours after

:07:58. > :08:01.birth. They know she had dark hair and brown eyes. But there's so much

:08:02. > :08:05.they don't know. They don't know how she died or how she came to be where

:08:06. > :08:08.she was found. And cruciallx, they don't know who her parents were But

:08:09. > :08:15.those are questions detectives say they're determined to answer. The

:08:16. > :08:22.priority is for the well`behng of the mother. It may be difficult for

:08:23. > :08:29.her to talk about what she went through. Maybe the time is right to

:08:30. > :08:32.come forward. Today Aaron Dtggan told Bolton's coroner just what

:08:33. > :08:36.progress they'd made so far. Alia's body was wrapped in a Florence and

:08:37. > :08:39.Fred shirt. It's a brand sold by Tesco. 50 people who bought similar

:08:40. > :08:42.garments in the Bolton area have been traced, spoken to and

:08:43. > :08:46.eliminated. They've also obtained DNA samples which could yield vital

:08:47. > :08:51.clues about her parents. Ushng the national DNA database they've

:08:52. > :08:56.identified 11 possible fathdrs. So far nine have been tracked down and

:08:57. > :08:59.eliminated. There's been no match for the mother, meaning she's

:09:00. > :09:02.probably never come to the `ttention of the police. However, the database

:09:03. > :09:07.has identified 100 people across the country who may be related to the

:09:08. > :09:16.mother. They're currently bding traced. I am convinced that a

:09:17. > :09:22.relative may have knowledge, and I am appealing to them today for them

:09:23. > :09:34.to speak to them. Regarding her ethnicity, she may Asian? Presumably

:09:35. > :09:39.some of the menu are trying to trace through the database are Ashan? Some

:09:40. > :09:44.are, some are not. Do you think you will ever be able to get to the

:09:45. > :09:50.bottom of this mystery? I do genuinely remain helpful. ``

:09:51. > :09:54.hopeful. The coroner has asked for another update from the polhce in

:09:55. > :10:01.June. And today he appealed once again for anyone who knows `nything

:10:02. > :10:05.about Alia to come forward. The rush to get children to and from school

:10:06. > :10:08.can be fraught. And it can be dangerous too. With many chhldren

:10:09. > :10:12.being dropped off and picked up by car, congestion outside schools can

:10:13. > :10:15.pose a risk to safety. But there could be an answer in the shape of a

:10:16. > :10:18.website designed by a Manchdster surgeon. And schools and cotncils

:10:19. > :10:20.are getting on board, as Mark Edwardson reports.

:10:21. > :10:25.Three o'clock at this acadely in Blackpool. Eight busy scene repeated

:10:26. > :10:30.at hundreds of schools across the region. Space is in short stpply.

:10:31. > :10:36.The cars parking on double xellow lines. It is always the samd cars.

:10:37. > :10:46.There are people not minding their manners. This family running their

:10:47. > :11:02.children to school. They set up a website. This is going to bd a good

:11:03. > :11:11.resource. Sabrina is partnered with another car. The security aspect is

:11:12. > :11:16.completely covered. I can trust it. I can trust someone else to take my

:11:17. > :11:22.children to school. It is the end of the school day, and you can see that

:11:23. > :11:35.things are quite people, cars, people. `` things are quite busy. We

:11:36. > :11:42.have multiple cars. Three councils have already signed up to the

:11:43. > :11:52.scheme. We macro we do get killed during `` we do get children

:11:53. > :12:00.clipped. That is quite distressing. What we want are for people to join

:12:01. > :12:07.hands and get children to school. Membership can cost nothing. Money

:12:08. > :12:15.might not be the only thing that is saved.

:12:16. > :12:21.So, would you be happy to share the school run ` even if it was with

:12:22. > :12:24.parents you don't know? Let us know. We'd also like to hear your

:12:25. > :12:28.suggestions on how to make the school run a little less fr`ntic.

:12:29. > :12:32.You can email us, or post a message on our Facebook and Twitter pages,

:12:33. > :12:36.and we'll read out as many `s we can at the end of the programme. I used

:12:37. > :12:39.to share a lift to school, but it was with a family that I know. That

:12:40. > :12:43.is the difference. I think that everyone is checked and vetted.

:12:44. > :12:46.Wildlife groups in the North West are warning that spending ctts could

:12:47. > :12:48.harm natural habitats for m`ny years. Groups like the Lanc`shire

:12:49. > :12:51.Wildlife Trust, which runs Brockholes near Preston, sax they've

:12:52. > :12:55.had to halve their staff, and their volunteer programme is at rhsk

:12:56. > :13:05.because of a lack of money. And you can see more on that story The

:13:06. > :13:12.Sunday Politics show this wdekend. Still to come on North West Tonight:

:13:13. > :13:20.The Reds collide, but this time Liverpool are the favourites of a

:13:21. > :13:23.pay at Manchester United. And find out why my esteemed colleagte is

:13:24. > :13:34.getting some help from an Olympian ` as she tries to make it to the start

:13:35. > :13:44.of Europe's leading 10K run. I am sure you do not need any help at

:13:45. > :13:56.all. Time for some expert sport A big football match coming up. Title

:13:57. > :14:00.chasing Liverpool go to Manchester United as favourites for thd first

:14:01. > :14:04.time in many years. We'll bd looking ahead to that in a moment, but it's

:14:05. > :14:08.all about Super League tonight with all five of our sides in action So

:14:09. > :14:11.we've sent Richard down the road to the AJ Bell Stadium where S`lford

:14:12. > :14:14.Red Devils play Warrington Wolves. Richard. Lots of connections with

:14:15. > :14:20.the two clubs. Salford need a win. Yes, absolutely. This is thd latest

:14:21. > :14:35.instalment in the revolution here at Salford. They call it the rdd

:14:36. > :14:41.devolution. It is Warrington Wolves they are playing tonight. W`rrington

:14:42. > :14:48.go into this after a thumping win against London Broncos. Thex won

:14:49. > :14:53.44`16. It is a team that Salford have also thrashed this season. But

:14:54. > :15:00.the red Devils did lose thehr last two matches. There will be ` talking

:15:01. > :15:05.point, the plans of the owndr 's wife to take over another stper

:15:06. > :15:14.league club, Bradford Bulls. Let's talk to the owner of this club. How

:15:15. > :15:20.are you? I am fine. You are planning to up sticks and move to Br`dford

:15:21. > :15:29.Bulls? We are not moving. Wd are taking over another club. That

:15:30. > :15:39.should not worry our fans. H have made a commitment to Salford, and I

:15:40. > :15:44.would not walk away from it. I will always be fully committed to

:15:45. > :15:50.Salford, and I will assure that I will take the club to the ndxt

:15:51. > :15:56.level. I cannot do any more. That is clear, but is there not an obvious

:15:57. > :16:04.conflict of interest here? Xou will be owning this club, your whfe, and

:16:05. > :16:12.you in all but name, will bd owning that club. She will own that club,

:16:13. > :16:17.and there will be times, and we have wives and businesses, and M`ndy will

:16:18. > :16:23.always come to me for advicd, and I may go to her. But there is not a

:16:24. > :16:30.conflict of interest. But what about this scenario, one of the tdams are

:16:31. > :16:36.going to eat `` for the title. There will be questions asked whether it

:16:37. > :16:49.is fair competition. Last ydar, we were going for it. Everyone was

:16:50. > :17:02.competing on equal terms. Your total `` I am asking... It will ndver die

:17:03. > :17:12.loot my interest in Salford. `` die loot.

:17:13. > :17:21.We have some of the games going on. St Helens host Catalan Drag`ns,

:17:22. > :17:24.Wigan play Hull KR. While Whdnes travel to Leeds. The Vikings' 3 `18

:17:25. > :17:28.victory over Salford made it three wins out of three ` their bdst start

:17:29. > :17:31.to a Super League season. Coach Denis Betts says it's down to

:17:32. > :17:38.recruiting strong characters to the club. Let's focus on the rotnd

:17:39. > :17:42.shaped ball now and the othdr red devils. Manchester United wdlcome `

:17:43. > :17:45.if that's the right word ` Liverpool to Old Trafford, with the Mdrseyside

:17:46. > :17:50.reds in with a realistic ch`nce of winning the title for the fhrst time

:17:51. > :17:52.in many years. It's all a bht of a role reversal from recent sdasons,

:17:53. > :17:56.with Manchester's reds trying to trip their old rivals up in the

:17:57. > :18:00.run`in. Manchester United ldad by 2`0. In previous seasons, it has

:18:01. > :18:04.been Manchester United going for the title, and Liverpool trying to stop

:18:05. > :18:11.them. This time, it is the other way round.

:18:12. > :18:13.title, and Liverpool trying to stop them. This time, it is the other An

:18:14. > :18:19.about turn that both sets of fans are still getting used to. Hn a game

:18:20. > :18:27.of this magnitude, Manchestdr United can step up. Three ` two victory. We

:18:28. > :18:36.will do all right. A lot of attacking options. We have `s good a

:18:37. > :18:45.chance as anybody. A year ago, this is how the table looked. Manchester

:18:46. > :18:55.United 26 points ahead. This year, Liverpool are 11 points ahe`d. If

:18:56. > :19:03.Liverpool win, what will it say about title credentials? Thdre are

:19:04. > :19:08.no favourites, as Manchester United have proven over the last tdn years

:19:09. > :19:13.when I have come to Anfield. Manchester United have been boosted

:19:14. > :19:14.by some welcome news on Robhn van Percy. He says that he wants to

:19:15. > :19:26.stay. I am delighted to have both of them

:19:27. > :19:31.together. They want to beat Manchester United players. Tnited

:19:32. > :19:38.are the champions, and will be desperate to hold up Liverpool's

:19:39. > :19:44.challenge. There has been great history between the clubs. We are

:19:45. > :19:54.there on merit. They deservd to be where they are. Who comes ott on top

:19:55. > :19:56.may well be whoever deals whth the shift in expectations from one team

:19:57. > :20:08.in red to the other. The Football League is to n`me an

:20:09. > :20:12.annual award in honour of Preston North End hero, Sir Tom Finney, who

:20:13. > :20:15.died last month. The Credit to the Game award is given to a pl`yer

:20:16. > :20:25.who's had an outstanding career in League competitions. A fitthng

:20:26. > :20:28.tribute. And a reminder that you can hear commentary and updates on all

:20:29. > :20:36.of tonight's Super League m`tches on your Local BBC radio station. Plenty

:20:37. > :20:46.for both sets of fans to talk about. More people have climbed Motnt

:20:47. > :20:56.Everest is the road across the ocean. To people from our rdgion are

:20:57. > :21:03.trying that right now, as they are going from Granton area to

:21:04. > :21:11.Barbados. `` name on macro. Neither of them have ever road before.

:21:12. > :21:20.How tough is it being? It h`s been absolutely relentless. It h`s been

:21:21. > :21:28.two hours on, two hours off for 32 days. Even though we are working our

:21:29. > :21:40.socks off rowing, it looks like it is just going to slip past ts. But

:21:41. > :21:45.we are going to break the rdcord for an eight`man crew. Just paint a

:21:46. > :21:51.picture for us. You do get ` bit of press, but only two hours. Hs that

:21:52. > :21:56.right? We are working on a two hours on, two hours of shift during the

:21:57. > :22:04.day, and at night, a four hour on, for our authorship. For the first

:22:05. > :22:10.ten days, we had it tough. We had to get used to sleep deprivation and

:22:11. > :22:17.seasickness. I have lost about two and a half stone already. Wd need to

:22:18. > :22:29.settle into the routine, and it is easier to stay awake. But it is 45

:22:30. > :22:35.degrees. It is unbearable. Hn a word, you have not road before. Ie

:22:36. > :22:45.going to write again? That hs a good question! Give me a week or two It

:22:46. > :22:57.has been a fantastic experidnce and we have enjoyed it, to an extent.

:22:58. > :23:08.You have asked me soon? Good luck with the rest of that row! We are

:23:09. > :23:11.going to talk about athletics. Two world record holders ` Wilson

:23:12. > :23:14.Kipsang and Kenenisa Bekele ` will face each other in the Great

:23:15. > :23:17.Manchester Run on May 18th. It's now Europe's biggest 10K race, with

:23:18. > :23:20.40,000 runners taking part. Behind them, and probably somewherd near

:23:21. > :23:21.the back, will be Annabel! Xou've been getting from tips from

:23:22. > :23:32.Lancashire Olympian Helen Clitheroe. On May 18, the streets of M`nchester

:23:33. > :23:37.city centre will throb under the feet of 40,000 people. Serious

:23:38. > :23:41.runners, to those doing it just for fun, and well, those that should

:23:42. > :23:43.know better. The BUPA Great Manchester Run is one of thd biggest

:23:44. > :23:53.10K races in Europe. So if you are sitting on yotr sofa

:23:54. > :23:57.at home, watching me on this sofa, thinking, "I would like to run it

:23:58. > :24:00.this year, but I'm not sure that I can", then perhaps, like me, you

:24:01. > :24:08.need a bit of inspiration to help you. Preston's Helen Clitheroe is a

:24:09. > :24:15.two`time Olympian and Commonwealth bronze medallist. She won the 1 K in

:24:16. > :24:20.2011. So who's better to put me to my paces? Get nice and fast. Keeping

:24:21. > :24:24.up nice and tall. If you had never run before, ten K, six miles, seems

:24:25. > :24:29.quite a lot. What tips can xou give us? If you can maybe commit to doing

:24:30. > :24:34.three or four runs a week... Three or four?! I'm looking at it from a
