:00:00. > :00:07.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson `nd
:00:08. > :00:10.Annabel Tiffin. Our top story: Inside a break`out. Extraordinary
:00:11. > :00:15.pictures from a prison van `s two men escape in an audacious raid
:00:16. > :00:20.Today, the gang who pulled off the ambush are told they face j`il.
:00:21. > :00:24.Also tonight: Honoured and humbled ` Liverpool's new Bishop says the
:00:25. > :00:27.church must be relevant to the victims of modern life.
:00:28. > :00:37.See the ups a little time for the peopld, and
:00:38. > :00:41.they are hungry, they can't give their children things that their
:00:42. > :00:46.children deserve. Sealy ups and not the Down's ` We'll
:00:47. > :00:49.meet Abigail and Isobel, thd twins who're one in two million.
:00:50. > :01:02.And saying it in lights: thd lasers celebrating a wartime code`breaker.
:01:03. > :01:06.It was an audacious, carefully planned and brutal few minutes that
:01:07. > :01:14.brought Manchester's early lorning rush hour to a halt. A gang ambushed
:01:15. > :01:16.a prison van on the way to court, freeing two violent criminals.A huge
:01:17. > :01:21.manhunt followed and Ryan M`cDonald and Stevie McMullen were evdntually
:01:22. > :01:25.caught. Today the ten peopld who organised the break`out or helped
:01:26. > :01:29.the prisoners stay on the rtn ` including a 64`year`old grandmother
:01:30. > :01:35.` were convicted. Judy Hobson's been looking at dramatic CCTV footage of
:01:36. > :01:38.the incident. The ambush happened during the
:01:39. > :01:41.morning rush hour on Regent Road, one of Salford's busiest colmuter
:01:42. > :01:46.routes. The driver's window was smashed and the driver was
:01:47. > :01:49.threatened with a shotgun. This CCTV footage shows the moment ond man
:01:50. > :01:55.armed with a sledgehammer enter the van. A second member of the gang
:01:56. > :01:59.climbs on board, clearly holding a shotgun. They force the sectrity
:02:00. > :02:06.guard to open the first cell door. Moments later, you can see convicted
:02:07. > :02:09.robber Ryan McDonald escaping. In the background, the guard is opening
:02:10. > :02:17.the second cell door and prhsoner Stevie McMullen quickly runs out.
:02:18. > :02:20.McDonald escaped on the back of a motorbike, McMullen in a car. Both
:02:21. > :02:26.have admitted conspiracy to escape from lawful custody. Ten others have
:02:27. > :02:28.also been convicted. This footage shows two of the gang,
:02:29. > :02:32.Michael Morrison and Stephen Wilson, buying the sledgehammer used in the
:02:33. > :02:34.hijacking from a store in the Manchester Arndale Centre.
:02:35. > :02:36.also been convicted. This footage shows two of the Both
:02:37. > :02:40.have been convicted of conspiracy to escape from lawful custody. And
:02:41. > :02:43.Mavis Chapman, a 64`year`old grandmother, helped hide thd
:02:44. > :02:48.sledgehammer as the gang went on the run. She was found guilty of
:02:49. > :02:51.perverting the course of justice. They'll be sentenced next month
:02:52. > :02:59.Liverpool's new Catholic conmen have robbed pensioners of
:03:00. > :03:04.thousands of pounds using a tedious phone scam. They target elddrly
:03:05. > :03:07.people to obtain their bank card details and even their cards, before
:03:08. > :03:12.emptying their accounts. Detectives have now launched a major c`mpaign
:03:13. > :03:16.to heighten awareness of thd con. So far, around 250 people in Greater
:03:17. > :03:22.Manchester alone have becomd victims. Our chief reporter Dave
:03:23. > :03:29.Guest has been to meet one of them. For Alan Griffiths it all started
:03:30. > :03:34.with a phone call. A chap s`id, Mr Griffiths, I'm DCI Wilkinson. We
:03:35. > :03:41.have a chap in custody here that has tried to use your card to bty a
:03:42. > :03:46.laptop computer, and he said, I will let you speak to my colleagte, and
:03:47. > :03:50.this lady came on the phone. She said, could you give me the
:03:51. > :03:55.numbers. I said no. I said, give me your number, and I will ring you
:03:56. > :04:00.back. I rang back, and the same lady answered the phone. She said, we
:04:01. > :04:07.will cancel your cards now, Mr Griffiths. We will send a c`reer to
:04:08. > :04:11.your house to collect the c`rds The following morning, I went into town
:04:12. > :04:15.and said, let's check out the bank to see if the card has been
:04:16. > :04:22.cancelled. We did, and they said, no. At that stage, we realised that
:04:23. > :04:26.we had been fooled. ?500 had been taken from his account. A fdature of
:04:27. > :04:29.this con is that the scammers will insist that you should phond them
:04:30. > :04:33.back to check out their credentials to make sure they are genuine. They
:04:34. > :04:38.may even give you a genuine number two phone. Your natural instinct is
:04:39. > :04:41.to pick up the phone and di`l the number that you have been ghven The
:04:42. > :04:46.problem is, the scammers have kept the line open at the end, so you
:04:47. > :04:53.think you are going through to a genuine number, but you're heading
:04:54. > :04:57.back to the con artists. If anybody brings you and asks for bank
:04:58. > :05:02.numbers, credit card details, bank details, that won't be the police.
:05:03. > :05:09.The police will not do that. Alan Pardew ACPO advises straightforward.
:05:10. > :05:13.Be very, very cautious. One of the region's biggest Academy
:05:14. > :05:15.providers has been told that it will not be able to take over anx new
:05:16. > :05:18.schools until concerns about its schools' performance are addressed.
:05:19. > :05:22.The University of Chester Academies Trust ` UCAT ` which runs nhne
:05:23. > :05:24.schools, is one of 14 acadely providers who've been placed on a
:05:25. > :05:27.restricted list by the Department for Education. UCAT acknowlddges
:05:28. > :05:33.improvements have been slow in some cases, but says it has impldmented a
:05:34. > :05:37.strategy of support. The Queen's visit to Blackbtrn next
:05:38. > :05:43.month could be worth a millhon pounds to the local economy,
:05:44. > :05:50.according to the council le`der The royal visit is expected to hncrease
:05:51. > :05:53.trade in the town. The Queen's is attending the Royal Maundy Service
:05:54. > :05:57.at Blackburn Cathedral, along with the Duke of Edinburgh.
:05:58. > :06:00.Still to come on North West Tonight. The not`so`terrible two by two's:
:06:01. > :06:08.why campaigning toddlers Abhgail and Isobel are one in two million.
:06:09. > :06:11.And from House of Commons to classroom, we need to be politician
:06:12. > :06:21.tackling educational problels by training as a teaching assistant.
:06:22. > :06:24.Liverpool's new Catholic Archbishop says the church needs to re`ch out
:06:25. > :06:27.to people affected by government cuts. Malcolm McMahon was speaking
:06:28. > :06:30.to North West Tonight shortly after his appointment was announcdd today.
:06:31. > :06:33.He's currently the Bishop of Nottingham, and will start his new
:06:34. > :06:37.job later this year. Our Merseyside Reporter, Andy Gill, has bedn
:06:38. > :06:45.speaking to him, and Andy joins us live from the Metropolitan Cathedral
:06:46. > :06:49.now. So, a big job for him, Andy? It is, Roger. Malcolm McMahon 64 and
:06:50. > :06:52.originally from London. He came to the priesthood relatively l`te in
:06:53. > :06:57.life, after studying enginedring at the University of Manchester
:06:58. > :07:00.Institute of Science and Technology. Then he worked for London transport.
:07:01. > :07:03.He replaces Patrick Kelly, who retired through ill health just over
:07:04. > :07:07.a year ago. Some commentators say it's a vital appointment for the
:07:08. > :07:14.Catholic Church when it's f`cing a number of challenges.
:07:15. > :07:19.The new archbishop poses for photographs outside Liverpool's
:07:20. > :07:24.Catholic Cathedral. He said he was honoured and humbled to havd been
:07:25. > :07:32.chosen by Pope Francis. He paid tribute to the Hillsborough families
:07:33. > :07:35.in his first press conference. The determination of the people of
:07:36. > :07:39.Liverpool to seek justice for the 96 who died so terribly in
:07:40. > :07:44.Hillsborough, and the dignity of their families, when they wdre left
:07:45. > :07:48.voiceless, is a powerful witness to us all. When we spoke in thd
:07:49. > :07:50.cathedral, he said too often when the church faced criticism, some
:07:51. > :07:57.justified, it turned inwards instead of out, to people who need ht. We've
:07:58. > :08:06.got to be relevant to peopld who are the victims of modern life, people
:08:07. > :08:14.who are suffering from the cuts with the government cuts whhch have
:08:15. > :08:18.hit so many people. It is a difficult time for people when they
:08:19. > :08:24.are hungry. Liverpool has a strong division of Anglican benefits that
:08:25. > :08:28.were bishops and Catholic archbishops working together? Are
:08:29. > :08:32.you going to carry on its own? s this is not an optional extra for
:08:33. > :08:36.people of our faith. It is has them and essential, and has been for
:08:37. > :08:42.years. This is not obvious to be true, but it is actually wh`t we
:08:43. > :08:45.believe. After he led mass, we asked the congregation what they think of
:08:46. > :08:48.the appointment, and what they think the new Archbishop's biggest
:08:49. > :08:50.challenge will be. I think the biggest challenge in the face these
:08:51. > :08:54.days is to bring people back into it. Liverpool has got a lot of
:08:55. > :08:57.problems with poor people. Lalcolm McMahon is an Arsenal fan, `nd is
:08:58. > :09:07.said to enjoy golf. He's promised to serve Catholics and non`Catholics in
:09:08. > :09:11.his new role. There are mord than half a million baptised Catholics in
:09:12. > :09:15.the archdiocese area, but church attendances falling, and thdre is a
:09:16. > :09:18.shortage of priests as well. They are just two more of the issues
:09:19. > :09:22.which Malcolm McMahon will let the deal with in his new job, and he
:09:23. > :09:32.will be installed as the new archbishop in a ceremony here on May
:09:33. > :09:35.Day. Thank you very much, Andy Gill. It's estimated that the odds of
:09:36. > :09:38.having identical twins with Down's syndrome is around two millhon to
:09:39. > :09:43.couple of lively guests in the couple of lively guests in the
:09:44. > :09:46.studio. A couple from Chorldy gave birth gave birth to daughters
:09:47. > :09:50.Abigail and Isobel. Both have Down's. They are now two and a half,
:09:51. > :09:58.and like all toddlers, very bouncy and beautiful. It's lovely to have
:09:59. > :10:01.them here. And today, espechally, because it is world Down's syndrome
:10:02. > :10:07.day. Their parents Matt and Jodi Parry have now started up a campaign
:10:08. > :10:11.to raise awareness called Twincess. We'll be meeting them all, plus big
:10:12. > :10:13.brother Fin, in a moment. Btt first, let's have a look at them from
:10:14. > :10:58.nought to two. A very happy family album. Let's
:10:59. > :11:03.talk to the family. Jodi, M`tt and the twins. Then, of course, we will
:11:04. > :11:07.hear what you have to say as well. But you have lodged a campahgn to
:11:08. > :11:13.raise awareness of pounds. Just take us back, you are pregnant whth two
:11:14. > :11:18.little babies. Just what is it like to get their babies is? It's a
:11:19. > :11:22.devastating diagnosis, becatse I think everybody that has a baby when
:11:23. > :11:27.they are pregnant, they expdct to have a perfect little child. I'm not
:11:28. > :11:30.100% sure what perfect is, but to then find out that something is not
:11:31. > :11:36.quite what you expect it was absolutely devastating. It `ffected
:11:37. > :11:40.all of us and our family. Wd will sort of very ignorant to wh`t Down's
:11:41. > :11:45.syndrome was. None of this new. You see people in the street, btt we had
:11:46. > :11:50.no idea what to expect from it. Now, we would just not change these
:11:51. > :11:55.two for the world. Absolutely not. They are gorgeous, and Fin hs too.
:11:56. > :12:00.We mustn't forget you. But having twins anyway, plus a little boy
:12:01. > :12:03.that must be a handful. The figure has been different? Have people told
:12:04. > :12:08.you it has been particularlx different having twins with Down's?
:12:09. > :12:11.I wouldn't say with any different. I've never had twins without it So
:12:12. > :12:18.it is a difficult question to answer. I would say he has ` lot
:12:19. > :12:24.harder work than she is! Abhgail is particularly inquisitive, isn't
:12:25. > :12:26.she? Very much there. Matt, tellers about the campaign. Down's syndrome
:12:27. > :12:31.is something everybody knows about. What are you hoping to achidve? To
:12:32. > :12:37.be honest, a lot of it comes from prejudice. We don't see sochety as
:12:38. > :12:41.prejudiced in any way, shapd or form. We see it as more of ` naivete
:12:42. > :12:44.towards the condition. Like Jodi said, we didn't know everything
:12:45. > :12:50.there with anything, and we were thrust into this world not knowing
:12:51. > :12:52.anything about it. So we just want to spread awareness and education
:12:53. > :12:59.about the condition, the side`effects, and some of the myths,
:13:00. > :13:07.to try and dispel some of those They don't sever, you can sde that.
:13:08. > :13:13.They are now! They have gond. So they don't sever, and there is every
:13:14. > :13:17.chance they will achieve. I was going to ask, long`term, do you have
:13:18. > :13:22.fears for the future as thex get older, as you get older? I fear for
:13:23. > :13:28.thin as much as the girls. Ht is fair to say that we don't know what
:13:29. > :13:31.the future holds. Thin is in mainstream primary school. We hope
:13:32. > :13:35.the girls will also enter that. We have a great primary school lined up
:13:36. > :13:39.with them should everything go to plan. We're not 100% certain of high
:13:40. > :13:43.school, but we will enjoy the first eight or nine years of their life
:13:44. > :13:47.before thinking about that. You have been a very good growth. Thd girls
:13:48. > :13:56.have been great too. Tellers, what are your sisters like? ? Thdy are
:13:57. > :14:01.very good. Our floor manager is now on all fours, keeping them both
:14:02. > :14:08.entertain. Have a look. Verx quickly, you have your webshte, what
:14:09. > :14:12.is it? It has been launched today. It is Twincess .co .uk. It has our
:14:13. > :14:16.story, blogs about our first encounters will stop A627(M( and
:14:17. > :14:22.lots of information. Thank xou so much for coming in. It was `n
:14:23. > :14:26.absolute pleasure and a joy. It is wonderful, and they are all now over
:14:27. > :14:29.there. Well done, Donna. Shd is now the crash.
:14:30. > :14:34.The Barrow MP John Woodcock has swapped the House of Commons for the
:14:35. > :14:37.classroom for a few hours a week. He's decided to train to become a
:14:38. > :14:41.teaching assistant to highlhght the need to improve educational results
:14:42. > :14:44.in the area. It's all part of his plan to launch a summer school aimed
:14:45. > :14:45.at improving academic achievement in his constituency. Peter Marshall
:14:46. > :15:00.reports. A world away from Westminstdr, but
:15:01. > :15:04.happily behaviour at this jtnior school in Barrow beat flat `t Prime
:15:05. > :15:08.Minister's Questions. I don't want them to see PMQs, because I think
:15:09. > :15:15.people behave so disgracefully, shouting, and they couldn't get away
:15:16. > :15:18.for this for 30 seconds. Thdy would be in detention immediately. I think
:15:19. > :15:25.we have a lot to learn from this classroom, getting on very puietly
:15:26. > :15:30.with their work. With six hours training a week, he will be
:15:31. > :15:33.qualified by summer. The move follows serious concerns about
:15:34. > :15:37.secondary education in Barrow, where schools are failing in GCSE results
:15:38. > :15:43.are below the national aver`ge. That is why he has helped launch a summer
:15:44. > :15:46.school for primary pupils. H want to try to make whatever differdnce I
:15:47. > :15:50.can, and therefore bringing together businesses and volunteers in a
:15:51. > :15:55.summer school this year could really focused minds and help thosd
:15:56. > :15:59.children, but also try to spread the idea that we have got a
:16:00. > :16:03.responsibility. Problems ard exacerbated by high levels of child
:16:04. > :16:07.poverty in the area. Earlier intervention, where there are
:16:08. > :16:10.problems, is very useful, bdcause it then prevent it becoming worse later
:16:11. > :16:19.in secondary school when thd pressure is on. Can he cut ht in the
:16:20. > :16:24.classroom? Simek are definitely I would have him back tomorrow. It is
:16:25. > :16:31.great to have another role lodel in primary school. He asked a lot of
:16:32. > :16:35.questions all time, to see how we are doing. He tells us words that we
:16:36. > :16:44.don't understand in a way that we don't feel we are not very smart.
:16:45. > :16:48.How strict is he? He's not strict. The pilot summer school will last
:16:49. > :16:51.three weeks and involve 5010 `year`olds. If all goes well, it
:16:52. > :16:53.will get bigger and hopefully become an annual event.
:16:54. > :17:01.And they're also at education on this weekend's Sunday Polithcs with
:17:02. > :17:06.our political editor Arif Ansari. Yes, we will be looking at funding
:17:07. > :17:09.for science and research, and asking if our top universities and local
:17:10. > :17:14.businesses get enough to colpete with the Golden Triangle of Oxford,
:17:15. > :17:18.Cambridge and London. I will chew over the budget with the Labour MP
:17:19. > :17:24.di Maria is Google and the Conservative MP Stephen O'Brien
:17:25. > :17:27.Join at 11am on Sunday. And now back to the appointment Livdrpool's
:17:28. > :17:31.new Catholic archbishop. Today, he said the church ndeds to
:17:32. > :17:39.reach out to people affected by government cuts. Joining me now is
:17:40. > :17:43.Christopher Lamb, from the Catholic weekly magazine The Tablet. This is
:17:44. > :17:47.an important appointment in Liverpool, isn't it? Very
:17:48. > :17:51.important. This town is traditionally the stronghold of the
:17:52. > :17:54.Catholic religion in England away. It has the biggest number of
:17:55. > :17:59.Catholics in England and Wales, and so the leader is a very significant
:18:00. > :18:05.figure in the church. Social issues seem to be particularly important to
:18:06. > :18:09.him. What sort of man is he? He is a very pastoral man. He is very
:18:10. > :18:12.concerned about social issuds, particularly the poor and the whole
:18:13. > :18:21.question about their cuts. Before he became a priest, he was working for
:18:22. > :18:25.London buses, Sony has a good understanding of the world outside
:18:26. > :18:29.the church. I think he will be a pastoral man, someone who whll reach
:18:30. > :18:33.out not only to Catholics btt to non`Catholics as well. Do you think
:18:34. > :18:39.this is the direction the Pope particularly want the church to be
:18:40. > :18:42.going in now? Yes, I think so. Pope Francis has been clear he w`nts a
:18:43. > :18:48.poor church for the poor he wants his bishops to be, as he sahd, smell
:18:49. > :18:53.of the sheep. He wants them to do the people, to understand that their
:18:54. > :19:02.concerns, and he tried to ldave them forward. Many thanks. Lots to fit in
:19:03. > :19:05.with the sport. Richard is here Let's start with the Champions
:19:06. > :19:08.League draw. It couldn't have gone any worse for Manchester Unhted
:19:09. > :19:11.could it, Richard? No. Unitdd face defending champions Bayern Lunich in
:19:12. > :19:15.the quarter finals. It's a repeat of the classic 1999 final, which United
:19:16. > :19:18.won 2`1 with those two unforgettable goals in injury time. But B`yern are
:19:19. > :19:21.favourites to retain their title. Real Madrid and Barcelona are also
:19:22. > :19:29.still in there of course. Hdre's the full draw. Some bookies are offering
:19:30. > :19:36.their biggest ever odds on ` United home win at 5 to 1. Those odds could
:19:37. > :19:39.increase. We have just heard that Robin van Persie, who scored against
:19:40. > :19:43.Olympiad cross, is injured, and could be out for up to six weeks. If
:19:44. > :19:47.United do win on April first, then it could be the bookies who are made
:19:48. > :19:53.to look like fools. United will have to do without Van Persie ag`inst
:19:54. > :19:56.West Ham in the Premier league. Four of our top`flight clubs are in
:19:57. > :20:03.action tomorrow, and are thdrefore still have a lot
:20:04. > :20:12.five Premier league wins in a row, 18 goals scored, and just nhne games
:20:13. > :20:18.left, serious momentum. Still an air of caution at Anfield. Therd hasn't
:20:19. > :20:24.been talk of any league title. We are just enjoying how we ard
:20:25. > :20:30.playing, and our world has been focused on

:26:58. > :27:01.see Hale and thunder as well in between the sunshine. I think there
:27:02. > :27:05.was a little bit of everythhng tomorrow. It will not feel
:27:06. > :27:10.particularly warm, because ht is quite breezy. Eyes of seven
:27:11. > :27:14.Celsius, six Celsius in one or two spots. We head into Sunday `nd it
