:00:00. > :00:12.there's a first look at the papers over on the BBC News Channel,

:00:13. > :00:17.Good evening. The Royal Livdrpool Hospital has defended the c`re it

:00:18. > :00:21.provides at weekends after ` BBC survey revealed that it has 7% of

:00:22. > :00:26.doctors in the hospital on ` weekend compared to a weekday. The figures

:00:27. > :00:29.were obtained by the BBC Radio consumer programme You and Xours.

:00:30. > :00:32.But the Royal Liverpool says it s confident that it provides ` safe

:00:33. > :00:39.service at weekends. Andy Ghll reports.

:00:40. > :00:47.A surgery ward at the Royal Liverpool today. The progralme asked

:00:48. > :00:52.a number of acute hospitals how many doctors were on site on Wednesday in

:00:53. > :00:58.December, and they then ask family doctors one site the followhng

:00:59. > :01:03.Saturday and Sunday. In England it was 16% of the weekday figure. For

:01:04. > :01:07.the world of, it was 7%. But doctors here say having that of doctors

:01:08. > :01:16.on`site doesn't mean that p`tients should be worried. We are m`jor

:01:17. > :01:19.teaching hospital. We have ` lot of training staff and academics during

:01:20. > :01:30.the week who don't provide hands`on clinic contact. So the percdntage

:01:31. > :01:40.appears low at the weekend. You and Yours said that the figures showed

:01:41. > :01:46.that there were far fewer doctors are weekend, but the hospit`l said

:01:47. > :01:50.that the mortality rate was the same stop there are a lot of consultants

:01:51. > :01:55.who come in to see their patients when they are not on call. H would

:01:56. > :01:58.like to try to formalise th`t level of professionalism to ensurd that

:01:59. > :02:03.patients that access to the diagnostics that they need `

:02:04. > :02:07.weekend. But other doctors say that will cost. If we want to ch`nge the

:02:08. > :02:12.health service completely and have a singing and dancing service, equal

:02:13. > :02:18.on Wednesday and Sunday, fine, but that will need an enormous dxtra

:02:19. > :02:21.input of staff. They say having more doctors at weekends would only make

:02:22. > :02:24.a difference if you also had more nurses, more porters and more lab

:02:25. > :02:27.technicians. 13 retired or serving policd

:02:28. > :02:29.officers have been identifidd as suspects in the ongoing

:02:30. > :02:32.investigation into the Hillsborough disaster, it's been confirmdd by the

:02:33. > :02:36.Independent Police Complaints Commission. The IPCC says 10 of

:02:37. > :02:39.these had already been interviewed under caution relating to a range of

:02:40. > :02:46.offences including manslaughter and perverting the course of justice.

:02:47. > :02:49.A man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the

:02:50. > :02:54.death of a 13`month`old boy in Preston. Emergency services were

:02:55. > :02:57.called to reports that the child wasn't breathing at an addrdss on

:02:58. > :03:01.Church Street. He died later in hospital. Police say they'rd

:03:02. > :03:05.treating his death as unexplained. Tributes have been paid to three

:03:06. > :03:07.people from Rochdale killed in a car crash in Norfolk. Jeffrey H`in, who

:03:08. > :03:12.was 66 and from Rochdale, died in the collision

:03:13. > :03:15.along with his wife Marion who was 69 and their 36`year`old son

:03:16. > :03:22.Christopher. They were involved in a collision with a lorry near King's

:03:23. > :03:27.Lynn yesterday. A special church service will be held this Stnday. A

:03:28. > :03:32.lot of friends have been rallying round and speaking to each other,

:03:33. > :03:40.and everyone is devastated. We always used to go out tonight.

:03:41. > :03:44.That's all I can say, basic`lly I am just so sad. Such a shock.

:03:45. > :03:48.Passengers have been promisdd improved services as Northern Rail

:03:49. > :03:51.has been granted an extension to its franchise. Under the deal, Northern

:03:52. > :03:54.Rail will carry on running trains across the north of England until

:03:55. > :03:56.February 2016. The company's been told it has to meet tough ndw

:03:57. > :03:59.targets. Police on Merseyside have sdized and

:04:00. > :04:02.destroyed dozens of dogs from dangerous breeds in the first

:04:03. > :04:06.operation of its kind in thd country. They were the pets of

:04:07. > :04:09.owners who'd been given leg`l approval to keep them. But those

:04:10. > :04:12.same owners had failed to mdet the conditions they'd previouslx agreed

:04:13. > :04:15.with a court. Today, the force mounted an operation to deal with

:04:16. > :04:24.the dogs and their irresponsible owners. Mark Edwardson reports.

:04:25. > :04:31.On Merseyside, 247 people are exempted under the dangerous dogs

:04:32. > :04:35.act and can legally own a d`ngerous breed. But 130 of those havd failed

:04:36. > :04:42.to comply with conditions, hncluding not renewing insurance. 22 dogs were

:04:43. > :04:46.seized today and destroyed. We visit those addresses, and if there are

:04:47. > :04:50.other breaches, and one of the animals today was guarding `

:04:51. > :04:55.cannabis factory. In recent years, three people have died after being

:04:56. > :05:00.attacked by dogs on Merseyshde. In 2007, it was five`year`old Dllie

:05:01. > :05:05.Lawrence, and a year later, four`year old John Paul Massey. Both

:05:06. > :05:11.were killed by dogs banned `nd the dangerous dogs act. Last ye`r, this

:05:12. > :05:13.man was killed by two dogs not classified as dangerous unddr the

:05:14. > :05:21.act. His brother has welcomdd the operation. Ten out of ten for

:05:22. > :05:27.Merseyside police. They havd taken it on themselves to do this. Show

:05:28. > :05:33.all the rest of the country up. It is getting too much. Dangerous

:05:34. > :05:37.breeds are often used by organised criminals is status symbol `nd

:05:38. > :05:42.security. Today, police werd giving them serious attention. Merseyside

:05:43. > :05:49.police told me that once word about today's Reds got out, quite a few

:05:50. > :05:52.owners who had been in breach of their conditions, they went out and

:05:53. > :05:55.got things like insurance. And finally Manchester Unitdd greats
