:00:10. > :00:18.died at Hillsborough ` their families reached another milestone

:00:19. > :00:21.today. I'm Andy Gill in Warrington ` where the new inquests into what

:00:22. > :00:29.happened on that fateful afternoon started this morning. The hdarings

:00:30. > :00:33.could last a year. Also tonhght An absolute hell. MP Nigel Dvans

:00:34. > :00:40.tells a court of his embarr`ssment after being accused of sexu`l

:00:41. > :00:47.assault. I'll be explaining how a preacher spreading the word found

:00:48. > :00:49.himself locked up in a prison cell. And looking for love. The pdnsioner

:00:50. > :01:04.searching for his long`lost sweetheart ` so he can leavd her all

:01:05. > :01:08.he's got. The jury who'll hear the evhdence in

:01:09. > :01:11.the new Hillsborough inquests has been chosen today. The hearhngs into

:01:12. > :01:14.the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans who died in the disaster in 1988 got

:01:15. > :01:17.under way in Warrington this morning. The original acciddntal

:01:18. > :01:19.death verdicts were quashed 15 months ago after the Hillsborough

:01:20. > :01:25.Independent Panel revealed new evidence about events beford and

:01:26. > :01:28.after the fatal overcrowding. Our Merseyside Reporter, Andy Ghll, has

:01:29. > :01:37.been in court and joins us from Warrington now. The first of many

:01:38. > :01:45.times we will say that. It has been a big day for the families? It has.

:01:46. > :01:50.The families came here from Merseyside and well beyond today.

:01:51. > :01:52.They came knowing that they face a hearing new evidence which could

:01:53. > :01:57.prove distressing about thehr relatives. They will know these

:01:58. > :02:02.inquest could last one year or more. A significant day for the

:02:03. > :02:09.families, but also want follow hope and trepidation.

:02:10. > :02:12.Really, really nervous, but it has been a long, long fight as dverybody

:02:13. > :02:16.knows. Hopefully this is thd beginning of the end. We have been

:02:17. > :02:20.here before and it is still a very nervous day for us all. I think

:02:21. > :02:24.today, although there is sthll a lot of legal to and froing, is the start

:02:25. > :02:33.of what will be the last pidce of the puzzle for us.

:02:34. > :02:40.The first day of many ahead. What happened in court? The coroner began

:02:41. > :02:47.the process of getting a jury to hear the inquest. 11 people, six men

:02:48. > :02:50.and five women, plus ten reserves in case anybody drops out overnight.

:02:51. > :02:54.They were told they couldn't serve on the jury if they were fans of

:02:55. > :03:01.Sheffield Wednesday, Liverpool or Nottingham Forest, or it if they had

:03:02. > :03:05.a connection to the emergency services. They were given a warning

:03:06. > :03:09.about judging on what they hear as evidence here. It is fundamdntal

:03:10. > :03:14.paper from the mind anything you have read or heard about

:03:15. > :03:25.Hillsborough before. What's coming expect in the days and weeks to

:03:26. > :03:31.come? `` what can we expect. Will get portraits of all the 96 who died

:03:32. > :03:37.from their families. As part of the BBC's coverage, the online team have

:03:38. > :03:42.produced a website called the 9 who died. That has photographs of all

:03:43. > :03:48.the 96 victims, and if you click on them you will see a biography of all

:03:49. > :03:51.those people. They will be tpdated as we get more details about what

:03:52. > :03:59.happened to them from the ndw inquest here in Warrington. Thank

:04:00. > :04:05.you. The first of many times we will talk to you.

:04:06. > :04:08.Greater Manchester Police h`ve apologised and paid compens`tion to

:04:09. > :04:12.a street preacher who was arrested and kept in a cell for 19 hours for

:04:13. > :04:15.quoting the bible. It happened after two young men asked John Cr`ven

:04:16. > :04:18.about the book's view on homosexuality. They then told a

:04:19. > :04:21.police officer they'd been offended by his explanation. GMP admhts

:04:22. > :04:25.mistakes were made. Our Chidf Reporter, Dave Guest, is in

:04:26. > :04:36.Manchester City Centre now. Tell us more about what happened, D`ve. John

:04:37. > :04:39.Craven was here spreading the gospel in September 2011 when thesd two

:04:40. > :04:42.young gay men approached hil and asked what he thought about gay

:04:43. > :04:47.people. He said to them it didn t matter what he thought, it lattered

:04:48. > :04:57.what got bored and he quoted various passages from the Bible. `` it

:04:58. > :05:01.mattered what he thought. Hd was arrested after they criticise what

:05:02. > :05:06.he said. He was held in a cdll for 15 hours, he said without food and

:05:07. > :05:11.medication. He was released without charge but when a lingering sense of

:05:12. > :05:21.injustice. The people we spoke to felt he had been harshly trdated.

:05:22. > :05:25.It depends on how he explained it. Did he say it in an offensive way?

:05:26. > :05:29.He should have been questioned and interviewed before he was locked up.

:05:30. > :05:32.What do you think about the fact he was held without food? I thought it

:05:33. > :05:38.was terrible. He hadn't comlitted a crime. As a gay man, I think it is

:05:39. > :05:41.heavy`handed. Religion brainwashes people to believe that. It hs a

:05:42. > :05:45.difficult one. It is all perception of the person they are saying too.

:05:46. > :05:52.It is what they believe in. He did have some help in his challdnge to

:05:53. > :05:55.the police, didn't he? A Christian Institute helped him to takd action

:05:56. > :05:59.against Greater Manchester Police, saying his human rights had been

:06:00. > :06:03.breached. Before it came to court, they paid him ?30,000 in

:06:04. > :06:08.compensation. Greater Manchdster Police are also paying legal costs.

:06:09. > :06:14.The institute said there is a more worrying underlying theme.

:06:15. > :06:17.It was very worrying that this officer thought that the right way

:06:18. > :06:21.to deal with this street prdacher was to arrest him without asking any

:06:22. > :06:25.questions and to lock him in a cell for 19 hours. That is very worrying.

:06:26. > :06:29.That ought to worry anyone who cares a jot for freedom of speech, and I

:06:30. > :06:32.hope that Greater Manchester Police are looking at this case very

:06:33. > :06:38.carefully, and making sure their officers are trained so this kind of

:06:39. > :06:41.thing does not happen again. Today, Greater Manchester Police

:06:42. > :06:50.didn't put anyone up for interview but admitted mistakes had bden made.

:06:51. > :06:54.A gang who trafficked Hungarian women into the country to t`ke part

:06:55. > :06:58.in sham marriages has been jailed for more than 13 years. Sandor Orsos

:06:59. > :07:00.and Shahbaz Khan from Bury were the ringleaders in a gang that

:07:01. > :07:11.trafficked three women. Amj`d Khan, was found guilty of assisting

:07:12. > :07:15.unlawful immigration at tri`l. The future of the Conservathve MP

:07:16. > :07:18.for Fylde ` Mark Menzies ` hs in question after lurid headlines about

:07:19. > :07:20.his private life were published in two Sunday tabloids. They c`rried

:07:21. > :07:24.claims from a Brazilian mald prostitute ` that Mr Menzies paid

:07:25. > :07:28.him for sex ` and asked him to buy an illegal drug. The MP has resigned

:07:29. > :07:35.his role as a Ministerial advisor ` but says a number of the allegations

:07:36. > :07:39.are untrue. The trial of a Sri Lankan politician

:07:40. > :07:42.charged with murdering a Brhtish aid worker from Rochdale has he`rd from

:07:43. > :07:45.the Hotel Manager. Khuram Shaikh was 32 and was attacked during `

:07:46. > :07:49.disturbance at a Christmas Party in Southern Sri Lanka. The hotdl

:07:50. > :07:52.manager saw Mr Shaikh trying to stop a fight between a group of len and

:07:53. > :07:59.another man. When Mr Shaikh got involved the gang beat him tp. All

:08:00. > :08:03.the men deny the charges. A coroner's found that a mother and

:08:04. > :08:05.daughter discovered after a house fire in Bolton were unlawfully

:08:06. > :08:09.killed. Mahnaz Rafiei had bden stabbed to death. Her mother died

:08:10. > :08:12.after breathing in smoke. Today an inquest heard claims that Mrs

:08:13. > :08:16.Rafiei's husband ` who also died in the blaze ` had threatened to kill

:08:17. > :08:18.her if she left him. Naomi Cornwell reports.

:08:19. > :08:24.Neighbours raised alarm when they heard an explosion at this home in

:08:25. > :08:29.the early hours of the night of December. Firefighters found husband

:08:30. > :08:33.and wife lying dead side by side on the kitchen floor. Her mothdr, 4

:08:34. > :08:38.older woman, died later in hospital from the effects of breathing in

:08:39. > :08:42.smoke. Today, an inquest he`rd her daughter had died of stab wounds

:08:43. > :08:45.before the fire was started deliberately by someone who had

:08:46. > :08:51.poured petrol in the kitchen and tampered with the pipe caushng a gas

:08:52. > :08:54.leak. Police say they believe no one was involved. Friends of Mahnaz

:08:55. > :09:02.Rafiei said she had told thdm she wanted a divorce, and said her

:09:03. > :09:05.husband had threatened her. But the couple's son pointed to evidence

:09:06. > :09:10.from a pathologist that his father had severe but undiagnosed heart

:09:11. > :09:13.disease. He told the court ht was possible his father had collapsed

:09:14. > :09:18.after finding his wife had been stabbed and had then succumb to the

:09:19. > :09:24.smoke. Subsequent media storm, he said, created speculation and buyers

:09:25. > :09:32.as to what had happened. Thd coroner didn't reach any conclusions as to

:09:33. > :09:40.who had stabbed Mahnaz Rafidi or who had started the fire. She ddlivered

:09:41. > :09:48.and open verdict. Turning to their relatives in court, she said, I have

:09:49. > :09:50.been greatly impressed, mord than impressed by the courage and dignity

:09:51. > :10:00.shown by yourselves and buy your family.

:10:01. > :10:04.The Ribble Valley MP Nigel Dvans has said the rape allegation he's facing

:10:05. > :10:07.will live with him for the rest of his life. Mr Evans has completed

:10:08. > :10:11.giving evidence in his defence at Preston Crown Court and he repeated

:10:12. > :10:14.that the sex was consensual. Our Political Editor Arif Ansarh joins

:10:15. > :10:21.us now from outside the court. What did Mr Evans say in his defdnce

:10:22. > :10:26.He is facing nine charges. He arrived here the start of wdek four

:10:27. > :10:33.to give his version of events. Much of the evidence revolved around the

:10:34. > :10:39.alleged sexual assault at hhs home in 2009. The court heard th`t he had

:10:40. > :10:43.a special relationship with the man. They have been seen holding

:10:44. > :10:48.hands on the House of Commons terrace. When Mr Evans made a pass

:10:49. > :10:52.at him on his sofa, the othdr man pushed him away. He said he felt

:10:53. > :10:59.like a chasing child. The principal allegation here is the alleged rape

:11:00. > :11:05.last year at his home. On that, Mr Evans told the court that the other

:11:06. > :11:10.man was a willing participant, and seemed happy. His barrister asked

:11:11. > :11:15.him, how did you feel about being called a rapist. Mr Evans rdplied, I

:11:16. > :11:20.cannot put it into words. It is something I know will live with me

:11:21. > :11:26.for ever. He continued, you are sexually assaulted other men. It has

:11:27. > :11:36.a horrific, he replied. He strongly denied every allegation agahnst him.

:11:37. > :11:39.The cross examination began? It did. We are going through each charge in

:11:40. > :11:48.turn. The first being an alleged indecent assault at a London bar.

:11:49. > :11:53.The prosecutor reminded Mr Dvans there was no basis for any false

:11:54. > :11:58.allegation and asked, did you make a pass at the man. Mr Evans rdplied, I

:11:59. > :12:03.have no recollection of that incident. He pressed him. Are you

:12:04. > :12:11.saying you have no recollection or the answer is no? Mr Evans `ppeared

:12:12. > :12:14.irritated. I have no recolldction of that evening at all.

:12:15. > :12:33.Cross`examination continues here when the trial continues tolorrow.

:12:34. > :12:42.Still to come on North West Tonight. Frank is in Hollywood. And once

:12:43. > :12:45.loved ` never forgotten. Why a Stockport pensioner w`nts to

:12:46. > :12:53.give everything to the girl he lost a lifetime ago.

:12:54. > :12:55.Network Rail has announced plans to ease congestion on peak`timd

:12:56. > :12:59.commuter trains. It's promising an extra 25,000 seats on trains going

:13:00. > :13:02.to Manchester ` and an extr` 7, 00 on services to Liverpool ` by 2 19.

:13:03. > :13:05.The improvements announced today are part of a ?38 billion investment

:13:06. > :13:13.programme in England which hs already under way. Stuart Flinders

:13:14. > :13:16.reports. The region that gave the world its

:13:17. > :13:19.first passenger railway lind has fallen behind in recent timds. Now,

:13:20. > :13:26.there's a five year plan to help bring us up to date. This m`p has

:13:27. > :13:31.been on the wall for as long as anyone can remember. Some of those

:13:32. > :13:36.routes are long gone. While nobody is planning bringing them b`ck,

:13:37. > :13:39.network rail said it is the biggest investment to the railways here

:13:40. > :13:42.since Victorian times. The Transport Minister was in Manchester to see

:13:43. > :13:45.how work's progressing on the new Victoria Station. There's money to

:13:46. > :13:49.improve what's called the northern hub too. Most of this we kndw

:13:50. > :13:50.already, and work is well under way, but some new details have elerged

:13:51. > :13:54.today. Electrification of the today. Electrification of the

:13:55. > :14:00.transpennine route will mean 70 0 extra seats on peak time morning

:14:01. > :14:07.trains to Liverpool. 25,000 on trains going into Manchester. But it

:14:08. > :14:16.won't mean the end of the crush on commuter trains. We won't bd able to

:14:17. > :14:24.give cease to everybody. On shorter distances, there'll be some

:14:25. > :14:28.standing. He can't it pay. The reality is we have to make ht

:14:29. > :14:31.efficient. As we reported e`rlier this month, some of the rolling

:14:32. > :14:34.stock on the Manchester to Hull line is to be transferred to Chiltern

:14:35. > :14:39.Railways, making congestion on the route even worse. But today, the

:14:40. > :14:44.minister hinted at a solution. There are several solutions that `re

:14:45. > :14:52.possible. Negotiations have been going on and I think you will find

:14:53. > :14:57.every lose vision `` a solution will allow us to ensure that we get that

:14:58. > :15:08.line. With passenger numbers continuing to grow, congesthon is

:15:09. > :15:11.likely to remain a challengd. To many people, Frank Sidebottom was

:15:12. > :15:15.instantly recognisable. He put Timperley in Greater Manchester on

:15:16. > :15:19.the map. But he never reallx made it big at home ` let alone abroad. Now

:15:20. > :15:21.that could be about to change. A Hollywood movie. Based on hhs

:15:22. > :15:24.character. Starring Michael Fassbender. In the surreal story of

:15:25. > :15:34.Frank's life, it's just the latest bizarre twist. Here's Jayne

:15:35. > :15:40.McCubbin. How to describe Frank? Frank

:15:41. > :15:45.Sidebottom? He had Timperlex's biggest head! And giant bug eyes

:15:46. > :15:55.staring. He was Timperley's favourite son. Now ` he's m`de it

:15:56. > :16:01.all the way to Hollywood. Frank was written by John. Band mate hn the

:16:02. > :16:06.80s ` following a typically Frank ` audition. I said I don't know any of

:16:07. > :16:14.your songs ` he said don't worry can you play He said ` You're in! But

:16:15. > :16:24.international fame. Even dolestic fame evaded him. Our film ghves your

:16:25. > :16:35.idea that people who don't lake it our failures. Maybe the people who

:16:36. > :16:39.make it our failures. You should be famous. Those around him hit the big

:16:40. > :16:42.time. Frank's tour driver? Big in Radio. The unknown invited to play

:16:43. > :16:51.Franks neighbour ` Mrs Merton? Big in comedy. But Frank died pdnniless

:16:52. > :17:01.in 2010. So what would he m`ke of this? What would he make of the

:17:02. > :17:08.American accent? I can't believe Michael Fassbender is involved. My

:17:09. > :17:13.dad would have loved the fact. It is loosely based on Frank. My dad

:17:14. > :17:16.mystique to be taken away. Frank has mystique to be taken away. Frank

:17:17. > :17:30.not been made into an American. It not been made into an American. It

:17:31. > :17:42.is out in May. Loosely based on Frank Sidebottom?

:17:43. > :17:51.It is a man with a big head. Let's move on to sport. A bhg

:17:52. > :17:59.weekend in the Premier Leagte title. Liverpool are back on top shnce

:18:00. > :18:02.Boxing Day. They brushed ashde Tottenham Hotspur by four goals

:18:03. > :18:16.It's a sin to point about Chelsea and four points clear of Manchester

:18:17. > :18:25.City. `` two points above Chelsea. Liverpool `based Chelsea. Everton

:18:26. > :18:28.They're having a fantastic season in They're having a fantastic season in

:18:29. > :18:34.their own right. That in thd table, their own right. That in thd table,

:18:35. > :18:41.they beautiful. Whoever wins the premiership will happen at the hard

:18:42. > :18:47.way. Liverpool manager Roy Dvans gave his opinion. Their atthtude has

:18:48. > :18:57.been right. They start the game right. They put teams under

:18:58. > :19:04.pressure. What do you make of the job Brendan Rodgers has dond with

:19:05. > :19:08.the team during the season? I think getting a near`perfect job.

:19:09. > :19:14.Alongside the stuff you havd to give them a bit of credit. You fdel the

:19:15. > :19:20.players like playing for hil. They must believe what he says. Do you

:19:21. > :19:25.think it is down to that gale between Liverpool and Manchdster

:19:26. > :19:31.City? I think it is about all of games are left. Sometimes it is easy

:19:32. > :19:35.to beat the big teams because everyone is up for it. You have to

:19:36. > :19:42.pay attention to every team you play. How much of a challenge will

:19:43. > :19:50.Manchester City provide? Massive. They have a great squad. Thdy have

:19:51. > :19:58.got some great players going forward. They have power and pace.

:19:59. > :20:10.We'll just concentrate on the next game. Is the difference between what

:20:11. > :20:14.he hears saying to us and the media? Why would he tell the world what he

:20:15. > :20:19.is thinking? I think he is being honest. He is trying to takd the

:20:20. > :20:25.pressure off his players. Whll he tell his players that they can do

:20:26. > :20:33.it? The well. He will say they can win it, but only if they pl`y at the

:20:34. > :20:42.top of their game. The other teams will have to play well to whn it.

:20:43. > :20:45.The Tranmere Rovers midfielder Joe Thompson, who is undergoing

:20:46. > :20:48.chemotherapy, has been tellhng Late Kick Off he's determined to return

:20:49. > :20:51.to football within a year. The 25`year`old was diagnosed whth a

:20:52. > :20:54.type of Hodgkins Lymphoma in November. There's a special feature

:20:55. > :21:01.on Joe's continued recovery from cancer on tonight's programle. Also

:21:02. > :21:05.on Late Kick Off, the Accrington Stanley players take part in the

:21:06. > :21:10.quiz, One On One. And it's ` classic. Sale Sharks' superb season

:21:11. > :21:14.is gathering pace after another win at the weekend. Sharks are now up to

:21:15. > :21:19.fifth in the table and still in contention for a European trophy.

:21:20. > :21:22.Stuart Pollitt reports. The Sharks can smell silverware. A strong pack

:21:23. > :21:29.and Danny Cipriani's boot combined for their latest win at Bath. It is

:21:30. > :21:34.difficult that any team to beat us away or home at the moment. We are

:21:35. > :21:48.showing NTU jazz. It has put us to the top of the league. `` wd are

:21:49. > :21:52.showing spirit. The win movdd Sale within four points of the play`off

:21:53. > :21:55.places. And moves them closdr to a possible shot at the title they last

:21:56. > :21:59.won in 2005. Preparations are under way for Sale's first Europe`n cup

:22:00. > :22:17.quarter final in six seasons against Northampton on Thursday.

:22:18. > :22:24.Are two trophies realistic? Definitely. We play Northampton on

:22:25. > :22:28.Tuesday night, then we have the top four to play. If you can get to the

:22:29. > :22:34.play`offs, then it is different It starts again and anyone can win it.

:22:35. > :22:49.With their form, they are not many bars to a successful season.

:22:50. > :22:51.In Super League `Warrington made a spectacular recovery against

:22:52. > :22:55.Huddersfield. Wolves were 14`4 down at half time, but they came storming
