:00:13. > :00:18.Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with Roger Johnson `nd
:00:19. > :00:21.Annabel Tiffin. Our top story: The health regulator flags up rhsk, so
:00:22. > :00:26.why does the hospital accusd them of a PR disaster? We reveal a furious
:00:27. > :00:29.row between Alder Hey and the CQC. Also tonight: Why one high speed
:00:30. > :00:36.motorcyclist is warning othdrs not to be so reckless, after he came
:00:37. > :00:39.face to face with this. And the Premier Inn with a premier position,
:00:40. > :00:53.but plans for their new hotdl don't go down well in the Lake District.
:00:54. > :01:05.And planners and concrete, some want to save the skies spaghetti junction
:01:06. > :01:08.from bulldozers. `` Scouse. On three occasions in the past six months the
:01:09. > :01:12.hospital's regulator has fl`gged up risks at Alder Hey Hospital. Some
:01:13. > :01:15.areas of concern to patient safety, some areas which need furthdr
:01:16. > :01:18.investigation. So, what has been the hospital's response? Tonight we can
:01:19. > :01:22.reveal a furious row. Hospital managers have accused the CPC of
:01:23. > :01:24.causing a PR disaster which has cost them millions. The Regulator has
:01:25. > :01:28.refused demands for an apology saying it's concern is patidnt
:01:29. > :01:43.safety, not PR. Jayne McCubbin has this exclusive report. It l`unched
:01:44. > :01:53.this last October. The camp`ign for its new charity appeal. But within
:01:54. > :01:57.days they were dealing with what they described as a PR disaster
:01:58. > :02:01.They blamed the CQC. Under `n FOI we've seen a series of angrx letters
:02:02. > :02:04.from the Hospitals most senhor managers to the CQC. They accuse the
:02:05. > :02:06.CQC of jeopardising a ?4 million donation for vital medical
:02:07. > :02:09.equipment. Of creating negative publicity which reached a potential
:02:10. > :02:14.audience of 28 million people. They demand an apology. In letters back,
:02:15. > :02:16.the CQC refuse. It's all because of this. Intelligent Monitoring. That's
:02:17. > :02:19.all about patient safety. The CQC takes data from hospitals, crunches
:02:20. > :02:29.it and decides which hospit`ls need inspections. Those with the most
:02:30. > :02:37.potential risks are put in band one, as was although he. Sir Davhd
:02:38. > :02:40.Henswhaw, the Chair, was furious. He's declined to be intervidwed
:02:41. > :02:43.This is what he wrote to thd regulator. At the very least, change
:02:44. > :02:49.inaccurate data published. Remove the Trust from the band. Most
:02:50. > :02:52.importantly, apologise for reputational damage caused. The CQC
:02:53. > :02:59.refused. What's more, in March risks once again kept Alder Hey in band
:03:00. > :03:04.one. It was right and fair `nd was appropriate for us to publish. When
:03:05. > :03:10.they have used words like enacted it, misleading and unfair, xou are
:03:11. > :03:21.categorically disagreeing whth that? Yes. They say the system is fair and
:03:22. > :03:27.robust. Alder Hey still dis`grees. The letters show that what xou are
:03:28. > :03:33.concerned about is the PR dhsaster. The way the initial intelligent
:03:34. > :03:38.monitoring was portrayed automatically gave an appearance of
:03:39. > :03:42.the league table and I fear that was almost inevitably going to be miss
:03:43. > :03:48.read by the press and the ptblic. The CQC tell me they are thd only
:03:49. > :03:51.hospital in the country to complain in this way. Families, like this
:03:52. > :03:54.don't care about the data or the row. They care about results. Their
:03:55. > :04:00.daughter in remission from leukaemia after eight months of treatlent
:04:01. > :04:04.Very good, they have done wonders for my little girl. But the data
:04:05. > :04:07.will bring inspectors back hnto Alder Hey in May. They'll bd hoping
:04:08. > :04:20.for a less controversial outcome. This is a row about the word 'risk',
:04:21. > :04:24.isn't it ` are patients at risk No, the CQC say they look at risk areas,
:04:25. > :04:29.the potential for risk. That informs them of where they need to hnspect.
:04:30. > :04:33.10% of hospitals are in band one. Not a league table ` but thd band

:05:01. > :05:07.he also addressed the controversial subject of now much the victims may

:05:23. > :05:29.the evidence they'll hear? The coroner gave them a dramatic
:05:30. > :05:35.beginning when the names of all the victims were read out in cotrt. It
:05:36. > :05:41.took more than six minutes `nd there was silence in the courtrool. Before

:05:54. > :05:59.victim. A lot is going to come out that we do not know about. Ht is

:06:14. > :06:26.to the Julie about their job? He said it was too make changes that
:06:27. > :06:33.would prevent deaths. The m`tch commander ordered a date to be open

:07:09. > :07:13.victims? He said the origin`l coroner had the victims tested for
:07:14. > :07:19.alcohol. This was controversial but he said we can say with confidence
:07:20. > :07:24.that more than half of the victims had no or negligible amounts of
:07:25. > :07:30.alcohol in their blood and the rest had only moderate amounts consistent
:07:31. > :07:37.with drinking before a sporting event. A nurse has appeared in court

:07:44. > :07:45.also faces other charges, including attempted poisoning, and was
:07:46. > :07:48.remanded in custody until April the 14th. The Ribble Valley MP Nigel
:07:49. > :07:52.Evans has told Preston Crown Court he had no 'pre`determined plan' to

:07:57. > :08:00.prosecution today has accusdd him of taking advantage of the man and

:08:15. > :08:18.dramatic pictures of a motorbike crash that almost cost the rider his

:08:24. > :08:26.a car head on as he raced around a corner on the notorious Cat And
:08:27. > :08:29.Fiddle Road. He was recording his journey on a camera fixed to his
:08:30. > :08:32.helmet and has published thd pictures online as a warning to

:08:45. > :08:47.decided to take a chance. The rider was thrown from the bike and tumbled

:08:59. > :09:02.back to the road. As it is compressed it has bent forks year
:09:03. > :09:10.and shattered the radiator here The bike's a right`off. Jack Sanderson
:09:11. > :09:17.lived to tell the tale. Herd I became a bit impatient but H never

:09:56. > :10:04.incidents. We introduced avdrage speed limits cameras which really

:10:29. > :10:32.cannot make it then the art off It has changed my outlook on lhfe. I
:10:33. > :10:39.would like it to be a lesson to others. Jack Sanderson says he's
