:00:09. > :00:11.Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with
:00:12. > :00:15.Roger Johnson and Annabel Thffin. Our top story: tributes to ` doctor
:00:16. > :00:18.from Manchester, one of two mothers, who drowned in Tenerife tryhng to
:00:19. > :00:20.rescue their children. Thred people were rescued by the Spanish
:00:21. > :00:23.authorities. Also in tonight's programme:
:00:24. > :00:31.Protestors set up camp against plans to drill for gas near Chestdr Zoo. A
:00:32. > :00:36.hundred years ago today a process was developed here at the sdwage
:00:37. > :00:38.works here in Manchester, and a change the world. I will tell you
:00:39. > :00:41.how. And a taste of the 1700s. The
:00:42. > :00:58.300`year`old cookbook returning to its Lake District home.
:00:59. > :01:01.Colleagues have been paying tribute to a consultant from Oldham Hospital
:01:02. > :01:04.who drowned on holiday in Tdnerife saving two children. Uma
:01:05. > :01:07.Rama`limgam, who was 42 and from Altrincham, was on a family holiday
:01:08. > :01:09.when the tragedy happened. @nother woman also died. Our reportdr,
:01:10. > :01:25.Elaine Dunkley, is at Oldhal Hospital now. Elaine, how dhd this
:01:26. > :01:32.happen? Uma Rama`limgam helps to save the life of many peopld by
:01:33. > :01:40.working here at this hospit`l. Sadly on Sunday she died in China to save
:01:41. > :01:49.the lives of two children. Ht is understood that the doctor, two
:01:50. > :01:56.women and two children all believed to be related, were all standing on
:01:57. > :02:01.a rock when they were swept into the water by a large wave. The children
:02:02. > :02:08.were taken to hospital with hypothermia. But in spite of the
:02:09. > :02:14.accounts, Uma Rama`limgam drowned along with another woman. Locally
:02:15. > :02:18.women have commented that it is a dangerous part of the beach and
:02:19. > :02:24.there has been a call are more coastguards in that area. What has
:02:25. > :02:30.the hospital had to say abott the incident?
:02:31. > :02:33.Uma Rama`limgam was a consultant and was very well regarded. She has
:02:34. > :02:41.worked at a number of hospitals in Manchester. The consultants here
:02:42. > :02:44.were too distressed to tell us on camera how they felt, but they gave
:02:45. > :02:52.a statement saying they werd very sad to hear of the death of Uma
:02:53. > :02:56.Rama`limgam. She was a fant`stic doctor at the Royal Oldham Hospital.
:02:57. > :03:02.This is a terrible shock to everyone who knew Uma Rama`limgam. I thought
:03:03. > :03:10.I with her family and she whll be very much missed.
:03:11. > :03:13.Now, battles over fracking have already taken place in Lanc`shire
:03:14. > :03:16.and at Barton Moss near Salford But the now the front line is a field
:03:17. > :03:20.near Chester Zoo. Anti`fracking protesters moved in over thd weekend
:03:21. > :03:24.to try and stop Dart Energy from test drilling a field in Upton and
:03:25. > :03:28.the zoo has given those agahnst any gas exploration its support. Stuart
:03:29. > :03:32.Pollitt reports. Fanning the flames of protest, or
:03:33. > :03:38.fuelling the fight to protect weird feeling. Whatever your opinhon,
:03:39. > :03:42.protesters set up camp at the weekend and say they are thdre for
:03:43. > :03:48.the long haul. We will be hdre until we go away. I have not been sleeping
:03:49. > :03:54.here, but I have been coming here every day. We do have our ddtractors
:03:55. > :03:57.and those who do not want fossil fuels... This is who they are
:03:58. > :04:05.protesting against. He recently told Australian investors there hs up to
:04:06. > :04:13.100 trillion cubic metres of gas under northern England. It does not
:04:14. > :04:20.take me many square miles to have an enormous amount of gas. His firm is
:04:21. > :04:28.one of the that have the right to drill for gas. Their licencd covers
:04:29. > :04:34.a large part of Cheshire. Today the firm was packing up after tdsting
:04:35. > :04:41.the site outside Chester. Wd are getting here before they get here.
:04:42. > :04:47.There are eight schools close to this area, we cannot have trucks
:04:48. > :05:01.going around effecting the children. This site is around one mild away
:05:02. > :05:07.from Chester Sue. `` Zune. The company did not respond to our
:05:08. > :05:12.request for comment today, but they have applied for planning pdrmission
:05:13. > :05:18.to drill for methane. When they arrive, they will not find ` warm
:05:19. > :05:20.welcome. That is the situation in Chdshire,
:05:21. > :05:32.where test drilling may start soon. Elsewhere, drilling tests h`ve
:05:33. > :05:37.already taken place. This is very controversial, and anti`fracking
:05:38. > :05:47.protesters have been there throughout the test. Earlier I spoke
:05:48. > :05:54.to one of the companies drilling for gas. I think it is a matter for the
:05:55. > :05:59.whole of the `` I think it hs a matter for the Home Office to
:06:00. > :06:07.address and compensate people. They have agreed to contribute to the
:06:08. > :06:12.funds available. The Prime Linister said that he would consider helping
:06:13. > :06:21.greater Manchester, but ulthmately people think that you are does he
:06:22. > :06:26.stand to profit from fracking. Surely, you should help to pay
:06:27. > :06:30.towards placing the protest. If this is successful there will be an
:06:31. > :06:38.obvious benefit to the nation as a whole. That will go to pay towards
:06:39. > :06:42.the main policing forces except That ultimately is the benefit that
:06:43. > :06:47.will come from the activity that we had been undertaking. We now have
:06:48. > :06:55.six months of testing the g`s and the potential for more wealth. Do
:06:56. > :07:03.you see in your experience that fracking here is more likelx than
:07:04. > :07:05.ever? I think in order to demonstrate whether or not shield
:07:06. > :07:12.gas can bring the benefits that people talk about to the nation we
:07:13. > :07:20.need to strap a well and sed whether it will flow. If we can do that
:07:21. > :07:27.both safely and environment`lly responsible if, there will be a
:07:28. > :07:34.massive benefit to the nation as a hall in terms of security stpply and
:07:35. > :07:52.in word investments `` in words investments. Thank you.
:07:53. > :07:56.A man has been charged in connection with the death of a 4`month`old baby
:07:57. > :07:59.in Wigan. Paramedics were c`lled to a house on Beech Hill Avenud in
:08:00. > :08:02.February when they found thd girl unconscious and not breathing. A
:08:03. > :08:06.postmortem examination found the baby had a number of fractures on
:08:07. > :08:09.the head and body. Martin Thomas has been charged with six counts of
:08:10. > :08:12.assault. He's due to appear at Wigan Magistrates on Friday.
:08:13. > :08:15.The judge hearing the trial of the Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans, has
:08:16. > :08:18.begun summing up the case. Lr Evans denies nine sex offence charges
:08:19. > :08:21.Earlier, the defence barrister representing Mr Evans gave his
:08:22. > :08:25.closing speech to the jury. He said they had to distinguish between
:08:26. > :08:28.drunken behaviour and criminal acts. The new Hillsborough inquest has
:08:29. > :08:34.heard how a Liverpool fan tried to reassure his younger brother over
:08:35. > :08:37.but that both brothers died in the disaster. This was just one of the
:08:38. > :08:40.stories the jury heard todax as relatives continued reading out "pen
:08:41. > :08:43.portraits" of the 96 victims. The Coroner's Court also heard `bout a
:08:44. > :08:46.wife who was six months pregnant when her husband died at
:08:47. > :08:50.Hillsborough, and a young m`n who would have made a fantastic father.
:08:51. > :08:53.Our reporter Andy Gill is in Warrington live for us tonight.
:08:54. > :08:57.Andy, tell us about the brothers first.
:08:58. > :09:06.Christopher and Kevin Trainor were from a large family. They wdre aged
:09:07. > :09:17.26 and 16. Kevin had been to the match in the year before and he was
:09:18. > :09:25.worried about going back. Otr brother Kevin had been at the
:09:26. > :09:29.stadium for the semifinals hn 1 88. When he heard that the final would
:09:30. > :09:36.be there, he said, all all not there. His brother tried to reassure
:09:37. > :09:45.him and said, don't worry I will be there. We heard other tributes
:09:46. > :09:54.today. Who else did we hear about? We heard from Sarah Brown, who is
:09:55. > :09:56.the widow of a man who died. I have tried to shove my daughter with bad
:09:57. > :10:06.the's love, which I know wotld have flowed with the abundance from my
:10:07. > :10:14.husband. She had desperatelx wanted a little girl and he would have been
:10:15. > :10:24.the best other in the world. We held about another man `` heard.
:10:25. > :10:29.They had so many dreams and a great future ahead of them. I know he
:10:30. > :10:37.would have made a fantastic father. His death has left a massivd void in
:10:38. > :10:44.our family and we miss him. Let me tell you about Gary, who had a chip
:10:45. > :10:53.it made to him by his father. He said, to think that the Hillsborough
:10:54. > :11:08.disaster could have been avoided if the hardest thing.
:11:09. > :11:20.The office desk used to be ` place you could call your own. But no
:11:21. > :11:24.more. It is supposed to savd space and make for less clutter, because
:11:25. > :11:27.with hot desking all the desks are shared. It doesn't suit everybody.
:11:28. > :11:30.In fact, one office worker from Manchester has even sued his bosses,
:11:31. > :11:40.claiming hot`desking led to panic attacks. Stuart Flinders is in our
:11:41. > :11:45.newsroom, where there's a hot desk policy. Seriously there is ` serious
:11:46. > :11:50.side to this? This is my best today, but it is a bit like musical chairs
:11:51. > :11:55.in here and I could be over there tomorrow.
:11:56. > :11:59.Many people do not like it. Once upon a time, an office had a
:12:00. > :12:03.door with your name on it or at least your own desk with a picture
:12:04. > :12:07.of your loved ones. Now, offices are often huge barn`like rooms `nd if
:12:08. > :12:11.there is a hot desk policy, you may have to sit at a different desk
:12:12. > :12:16.every day...if you can find one It doesn't suit everybody. There are
:12:17. > :12:20.people I think who when thex get into the office, they think that is
:12:21. > :12:23.me over there, my desk, my pictures are there, people know wherd to go
:12:24. > :12:28.to find me. Those are peopld who need the structure. But when you hot
:12:29. > :12:32.desk, there are people who think I am just another part of the
:12:33. > :12:35.equipment. They move desks `round, they move computers around, they
:12:36. > :12:38.move me around. One office worker, a 999 operator, resigned his job with
:12:39. > :12:44.the North West Ambulance Service, because of hot`desking. Nathan
:12:45. > :12:47.Roberts says he has an anxidty disorder and would suffer p`nic
:12:48. > :12:52.attacks whenever he found a colleague in his preferred seat He
:12:53. > :12:55.accused his bosses of breakhng the Disability Discrimination Act and
:12:56. > :13:01.sued them, but an Appeal Cotrt judge has ruled against him. A random
:13:02. > :13:07.survey of office workers today suggested some resistance to the
:13:08. > :13:12.very idea of hot`desking. I prefer having my own desk. I like having my
:13:13. > :13:15.own stuff in my own drawers. If you are constantly moving around the
:13:16. > :13:19.office, it feels like you do not have a home. What do you thhnk about
:13:20. > :13:23.hot desking? I personally do not like it. Why not? Because you cannot
:13:24. > :13:28.settle and put your stuff down, you have to keep putting your stuff in a
:13:29. > :13:31.box and moving it. I have done it in the past, but I find it verx
:13:32. > :13:36.unsettling. It is like you do not belong. I like to have everxthing
:13:37. > :13:40.where I know it is going to be. Like it or not, hot`desking is in vogue,
:13:41. > :13:43.and having your own desk sedms to be going the way of office smoking
:13:44. > :13:48.Stuart Flinders, BBC North West Tonight, Manchester. I don't think
:13:49. > :14:00.many of us would like to go back to the days of smoking in officers One
:14:01. > :14:06.of the Earth says, I hot desk and my biggest bright is the state that the
:14:07. > :14:12.desks are left them. In othdr viewer said, hot desk and is a nightmare.
:14:13. > :14:28.You need your own stuff arotnd to do your job. But this year said, it
:14:29. > :14:34.does not bother her at all. Still to come tonight: Everton
:14:35. > :14:43.hormone on the champions title.
:14:44. > :14:51.The old book that is bringing a case of the path to a historic f`rmhouse.
:14:52. > :14:54.Manchester is known as a pioneering place for many things ` the computer
:14:55. > :14:58.and the Co`operative Movement amongst them. But did you know that
:14:59. > :15:00.a hundred years ago, it was responsible for inventing '`ctivated
:15:01. > :15:21.sludge', a way of dealing whth sewage which changed the world. Judy
:15:22. > :15:25.Hobson reports. This is what all the fuss is about `
:15:26. > :15:28.activated sludge. A sewage treatment invented right here in Davyhulme.
:15:29. > :15:31.Air is pumped into the sewage, allowing micro`organisms to breathe.
:15:32. > :15:35.It basically adds bugs to the process, which eat the food in the
:15:36. > :15:41.sewerage and convert that sdwerage into refined and purified w`ter The
:15:42. > :15:44.sludge falls to the bottom, allowing the cleaner water on the top to
:15:45. > :15:49.eventually flow into the Manchester ship canal. So this is what the
:15:50. > :15:53.water looks like when it arrives, and this is how it looks whdn it has
:15:54. > :15:58.been treated. This plant trdats waste from 1.2 million people living
:15:59. > :16:01.in Manchester every single day. There is quite a strong smell in the
:16:02. > :16:05.air. Dealing with sewage wasn't always so simple. The Davyhtlme
:16:06. > :16:12.Works opened in 1894 to copd with all the
:16:13. > :16:20.and rivers were in danger of becoming seriously polluted.
:16:21. > :16:23.Activated sludge was a major breakthrough, because it en`bled the
:16:24. > :16:26.waste from millions to be treated in a relatively small space, allowing
:16:27. > :16:32.cities to grow on scale nevdr seen before. Within just a few ydars
:16:33. > :16:35.major cities such as Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Texas, Californi`, all
:16:36. > :16:42.over the United States it w`s in use. International experts gathered
:16:43. > :16:47.in Manchester this month for the centenary celebrations. 100 years
:16:48. > :16:53.later it is still a critical technology. And today the sludge can
:16:54. > :16:55.be recycled, some of it is tsed to generate electricity, making
:16:56. > :16:58.Davyhulme self`sufficient in energy and still at the forefront of the
:16:59. > :17:11.waste industry. Judy Hobson, BBC North West Tonight, Manchester. Hard
:17:12. > :17:21.to know how to go from that to Richard and the sport. Grah`m Sharpe
:17:22. > :17:32.is here to talk about an am`zing weekend on the Premier Leagte.
:17:33. > :17:39.Everton were sensational. They currently are fifth in point and a
:17:40. > :17:44.place behind the gunners, btt with a game in hand A situation
:17:45. > :17:46.will certainly be enjoying. Former Everton striker Graeme Sharp. How
:17:47. > :17:54.would you rate that perform`nce yesterday? That is probably the best
:17:55. > :18:03.performance against Arsenal since the inception of the Premier
:18:04. > :18:14.League. Just watching the fhrst goal now, this is what he had to say To
:18:15. > :18:20.be able to perform a team that have been setting standards in Etropean
:18:21. > :18:29.football, that is a massive day Seems to be very tactically
:18:30. > :18:40.flexible, he surprised Arsenal this time. It got Arsenal by surprise. He
:18:41. > :18:44.took the ball very very well. Roberto over the season has been
:18:45. > :18:53.very good tactically, whethdr it is substitution saw the starting XI.
:18:54. > :18:58.There seems to be a real togetherness in the team and he
:18:59. > :19:05.seems to have got the team dnjoying what they are doing. I think the
:19:06. > :19:16.team enjoying playing for hhm. They are excited. Do you think they have
:19:17. > :19:22.got city and United at home, that Everton will finish in that top
:19:23. > :19:27.precision. It is in their own hands. The next game is important, against
:19:28. > :19:31.Sunderland. Hopefully they can take that and go from there. I al sure
:19:32. > :19:39.that Roberto will say, less than the next game is the most important
:19:40. > :19:45.Everton have been sensation`l. Meanwhile Liverpool return to the
:19:46. > :19:53.top of the table. They scordd twice from the penalty spot. They had a
:19:54. > :20:02.4`0 win over Southampton. They have two games in hand. Manchestdr United
:20:03. > :20:07.scoring here during their 4`1 win to Newcastle.
:20:08. > :20:11.The former Wigan Athletic c`ptain, Arjan De Zeeuw, and his new career
:20:12. > :20:14.feature in tonight's Late Khck Off programme. Since retiring, the
:20:15. > :20:17.Dutchman has turned detective and is now based at the central police
:20:18. > :20:20.station in his hometown of @lkmaar. Having nearly completed his final
:20:21. > :20:24.qualifications, he will soon be investigating crimes includhng
:20:25. > :20:30.murder. You learn how to shoot with a gun. You learn how to intdrrogate
:20:31. > :20:35.people. Now it is more the investigative process that xou get
:20:36. > :20:41.used to. It is challenging `nd the good thing is that it is sthll a
:20:42. > :20:47.team effort. You hardly ever solve a crime on your own. You need a team
:20:48. > :20:50.of people around you. New lhne Tonight's late kick off is on BBC
:20:51. > :20:53.One at 11.25. Tony Livesey's joined by Oldham manager Lee Johnson and

:20:58. > :21:00.Cricket now and Lancashire `re at Nottinghamshire for their opening
:21:01. > :21:03.match of the new season in Division One. After rain delayed start today,
:21:04. > :21:05.Lancashire have struggled and are on 77`6. That is 195 runs behind
:21:06. > :21:09.Nottinghamshire's first Innhngs score of 272. However, Lanc`shire
:21:10. > :21:12.can take heart in the knowlddge that Jimmy Anderson took five wickets for
:21:13. > :21:16.54. It's been a turbulent fdw years for the Red Rose club. They won the
:21:17. > :21:19.Division One title in 2011 only to be relegated 12`months later. Then
:21:20. > :21:27.last season promotion returned them to the top flight. Mark Edw`rdson

:23:48. > :23:57.bestseller, but this book is a piece of literary history. It was
:23:58. > :24:06.handwritten in 16 90. What hs more the recipes it contains are being

:24:16. > :24:25.is beginning to smell like the past. It has currents, Apple, Peel,
:24:26. > :24:32.fortified wine. The unusual thing is that it also has meat in it, this is
