:00:00. > :00:00.murdering 29 people in the Omagh bombing. The Co-Op Bank has said
:00:00. > :00:08.sorry Good evening. Welcome to North West
:00:09. > :00:11.Tonight with Roger Johnson `nd Nina Warhurst. Our top story: Rebuilding
:00:12. > :00:14.his life after being cleared of all sex charges but was it right to
:00:15. > :00:25.bring the Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans to court?
:00:26. > :00:29.Career in bits, his well behng destroyed. His position as deputy
:00:30. > :00:32.speaker gone. We ask the Crown Prosecution Service
:00:33. > :00:35.whether people in the public eye are being disproportionately targeted.
:00:36. > :00:38.Also tonight. Crisis over leadership. With annual losses of
:00:39. > :00:49.one`point`three billion pounds ` where does the Co`Op go frol here?
:00:50. > :00:55.Mystery over the disappearance of Matthew. He was last seen rtnning
:00:56. > :01:01.from a pub in the Lake District And I am with fans preparing for
:01:02. > :01:02.Wembley. Once again. And once again they are confident of upsetting the
:01:03. > :01:10.odds. And more than the fifth member of
:01:11. > :01:12.Joy Division. A new film celebrates one of Manchester's most influential
:01:13. > :01:29.music producers. Friends of the Ribble Vallex MP
:01:30. > :01:34.Nigel Evans say he's "in bits" following his five week`long trial
:01:35. > :01:37.at Preston Crown Court. Mr Dvans was cleared yesterday of nine sdx
:01:38. > :01:40.charges, including rape. Thdre's been intense criticism todax of the
:01:41. > :01:43.Crown Prosecution Service for pursuing a case that some s`w as
:01:44. > :01:53.weak. And it's still unclear what the MP's political future is. We'll
:01:54. > :01:55.hear from the CPS in a moment. First, here's our Political Editor
:01:56. > :02:00.Arif Ansari. He's been sustained by support and
:02:01. > :02:03.best wishes. And today Nigel Evans will be considering his futtre after
:02:04. > :02:13.almost a year of investigathon, prosecution and finally acqtittal.
:02:14. > :02:16.After the last 11 months I have gone through, nothing will ever be the
:02:17. > :02:20.same again. He's endured a five week trhal which
:02:21. > :02:28.his friends say has been devastating. Career in bits. His
:02:29. > :02:33.well being destroyed. His position as deputy speaker, Don.
:02:34. > :02:35.So questions for the Crown Prosecution Service. It's their
:02:36. > :02:39.fourth high profile failure following the cases of actors Andrew
:02:40. > :02:42.Lancel, Michael Le Vell and Bill Roache. In the Nigel Evans' trial
:02:43. > :02:43.three of the seven complain`nts told the court they did not support
:02:44. > :02:52.prosecutions. But they were given no choice. I
:02:53. > :03:02.asked the MP's solicitor if Mr Evans feels he was unfairly treatdd. He
:03:03. > :03:09.does. However, he respects the British judicial system and feels if
:03:10. > :03:15.there are genuine complaints, people ought to come forward. In this case,
:03:16. > :03:17.he feels he was treated disproportionally because of his
:03:18. > :03:21.status. His future status depends on voters
:03:22. > :03:29.and what they made of the trial He should go. Whether he is proven
:03:30. > :03:33.innocent, it is the stigma. He works hard for the people in Ribble
:03:34. > :03:36.Valley. I would like to see him continue.
:03:37. > :03:42.And after more than 20 years as MP, Nigel Evans and his local p`rty must
:03:43. > :03:46.decide whether to stick togdther. Your brain must be scrambled after
:03:47. > :03:53.12 months of this and six wdeks trial. It is for him to dechde what
:03:54. > :03:56.he wants to do. There's a great deal for Nigel Evans
:03:57. > :04:03.to consider now that he's elerged from what he called "absolute hell".
:04:04. > :04:06.Earlier I spoke to the Chief Crown Prosecutor for the North West, Nazir
:04:07. > :04:09.Afzal, and I asked him that considering three of the alleged
:04:10. > :04:13.victims said they didn't believe a crime had been committed ` should Mr
:04:14. > :04:22.Evans have ever been brought to court? We have dealt with m`ny cases
:04:23. > :04:26.over the years where victims do not feel they were victims in some way.
:04:27. > :04:31.The grooming cases, they did not feel like they were victims but we
:04:32. > :04:36.have to look at all of the circumstances around this event and
:04:37. > :04:40.we did in this case. The people who made complaints were happy to come
:04:41. > :04:46.to court. They signed their statements and the evidence was
:04:47. > :04:51.reviewed, not just by prosecutors. But this was different from
:04:52. > :04:55.Rochdale. These were people who knew their own minds, they make clear
:04:56. > :05:02.decisions, one of them said I don't consider myself a victim. I do not
:05:03. > :05:07.wish for Nigel Evans to be charged. We have many cases where victims
:05:08. > :05:12.don't want to give evidence. For example, domestic abuse casds. We
:05:13. > :05:16.present the evidence and it's important to remember the jtdge is
:05:17. > :05:22.independent. The judge decided the case should go to the jury. This is
:05:23. > :05:29.the latest of a number of high`profile acquittals. Is there a
:05:30. > :05:38.danger the reputation of thd CPS is being damaged? Absolutely not. 5%
:05:39. > :05:43.is the conviction rate. In the same week this case is dealt with, 1 00
:05:44. > :05:48.others have been successfully prosecuted. We are doing our job
:05:49. > :05:54.well. We are not complacent. There will be learning in this case about
:05:55. > :06:00.how to improve the service. What you say to people who say, the CPS is so
:06:01. > :06:04.terrified of missing the next Jimmy Savile or the grooming ring that
:06:05. > :06:09.people in the public eye ard being disproportionally targeted?

:06:19. > :06:23.Across the board we don't c`re who the claimant is. We look at the
