:11:45. > :11:47.awareness about the dangers of aneurysms, balloons of blood that
:11:48. > :11:57.can grow in arteries and prove fatal. It was around that time that
:11:58. > :12:07.he spotted his own. I had a tiny aneurysm. Over the decades, since I
:12:08. > :12:10.retired, I have been following it. Treatment took him back to his old
:12:11. > :12:14.stomping ground, the Manchester Royal nfirmary, where at 84, he has
:12:15. > :12:20.become one the first people in the country to have his aneurysm treated
:12:21. > :12:23.using a new technique. Previously, a mesh tube would have been sewn into
:12:24. > :12:28.reduced blood flow to the problem area. This did not always work and a
:12:29. > :12:34.slow recovery meant older patients were often ruled out. Using the new
:12:35. > :12:37.technique, a filler is injected which normalises the blood flow,
:12:38. > :12:45.effectively stopping the aneurysm from existing. You have been a
:12:46. > :12:51.consultant surgeon for 15 years, how do you feel like something like this
:12:52. > :12:56.comes along? I feel like a child in a toy shop. It is great fun to put
:12:57. > :13:02.in. It is aesthetically pleasant, it is effective in areas that we don't
:13:03. > :13:06.have another option for. I guess it is fair to say that if it was not
:13:07. > :13:13.for people like Dr Russell, this research would not have happened.
:13:14. > :13:18.No, it would be no purpose. `` have not had any purpose. John is modest
:13:19. > :13:21.about the part he played. His one compaint, that his golf swing hasn't
:13:22. > :13:32.improved at all. Did you expect it to? No, but one has hopes.
:13:33. > :13:36.Let's go back to our top story now, the sacking of Manchester United
:13:37. > :13:39.Manager David Moyes. He was chosen by Sir Alex Ferguson to be his
:13:40. > :13:45.successor, but, after just ten months, United's board have decided
:13:46. > :13:49.he's not the right man after all. So where did it all go wrong for the
