:00:15. > :00:17.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson... And

:00:18. > :00:20.Annabel Tiffin. Our top story: The husband of Rania Alayed tells a

:00:21. > :00:24.murder trial he's heard voices in his head and seen spirits since he

:00:25. > :00:26.was a teenager. Ahmed Al`Khatib admits killing her, but denies

:00:27. > :00:29.murder on grounds of diminished responsibility. Also tonight: Calls

:00:30. > :00:32.for a public inquiry into whether a pregnancy`testing drug caused birth

:00:33. > :00:35.defects in the 1960s and 1970s. The so`called sun`bed culture in

:00:36. > :00:37.Liverpool that's left its scar on this young mother.

:00:38. > :00:40.defects in the 1960s and 1970s. The so`called sun`bed culture in

:00:41. > :01:05.Liverpool that's left its scar on this young mother.

:01:06. > :01:08.It was a drug taken by almost 1.5 million women to test for pregnancy,

:01:09. > :01:12.but was it safe ?It's a question a new parliamentary group of MPs, set

:01:13. > :01:16.up today, will be looking into after growing calls for a public inquiry

:01:17. > :01:26.from people who say they have been left with birth defects and other

:01:27. > :01:30.Karl Murphy from Liverpool blames the condition he has lived with for

:01:31. > :01:33.41 years on the drug Primodos. His mother Pamela and 1.5 million women

:01:34. > :01:47.took the hormone pregnancy`testing drug, which was available until the

:01:48. > :01:50.late 1970s. Primodos predates modern urine`based pregnancy tests and came

:01:51. > :01:53.in a packet containing two round pills. It contained hormones which

:01:54. > :02:10.would trigger menstruation if the woman wasn't pregnant in today's

:02:11. > :02:17.We were never consulted, we were never told what we were taking. We

:02:18. > :02:22.were told to take the tablets. The company that made the drop says

:02:23. > :02:37.that there is no scientific evidence to prove that the drop caused harm.

:02:38. > :02:43.They said... Campaigners say that since then they have a teamed new

:02:44. > :02:52.documents which said that it should not be used during pregnancy. This

:02:53. > :02:58.and other evidence will be presented to a new all`party committee set out

:02:59. > :03:02.today. This really is a scandal. It stinks to high heaven and I am

:03:03. > :03:09.really angry, actually, on behalf of my constituent. Kyle and others are

:03:10. > :03:17.expecting a public inquiry but he also wants a secure future. The need

:03:18. > :03:18.to be helped through the rest of their lives, because they are going

:03:19. > :03:43.to suffer in the future. The husband of Rania Alayed has told

:03:44. > :03:47.a murder trial in Manchester that he first started hearing voices

:03:48. > :03:50.in his head and seeing spirits Ahmed Al`Khatib admits killing Rania

:03:51. > :03:54.Alayed, but denies murder on grounds The court has also been hearing

:03:55. > :03:57.about extensive social`media exchanges in the weeks

:03:58. > :03:59.before Rania's death. Our reporter Mark Edwardson has been

:04:00. > :04:02.in Manchester Crown Court for us. Mark, tell us more

:04:03. > :04:08.about these voices and demons He has told the court that he has

:04:09. > :04:11.been hearing voices. That is since he was 16 years old. He says at

:04:12. > :04:16.times those voices have urged him to take his own life. It is alleged

:04:17. > :04:18.that on the 7th of June last year Rania Alayed was murdered by her

:04:19. > :04:23.husband and his brother. The prosecution says that the mother of

:04:24. > :04:27.three was killed because she had become too westernised. She had

:04:28. > :04:31.started college, made new friends, and it appears that her husband felt

:04:32. > :04:37.that she may have been having an affair with a fellow student. Ahmed

:04:38. > :04:42.Al`Khatib said that he killed her when she appeared as that Demon and

:04:43. > :04:48.he claims diminished responsibility. I mentioned exchanges on social

:04:49. > :04:52.media. Can you explain a bit more about that? Those exchanges were

:04:53. > :04:58.quite extensive and written in the months before Rania Alayed's death.

:04:59. > :05:07.They were exchanged when she was taken to hospital after she claimed

:05:08. > :05:11.that Ahmed Al`Khatib had raped her. He repeatedly implored her to go

:05:12. > :05:15.back to him, expressing his devotion for her. She said, enough is

:05:16. > :05:21.enough. I want a divorce. He admits killing her, but we still do not

:05:22. > :05:28.have a body. What is supposed to have happened? As you say, it is

:05:29. > :05:35.alleged that Rania Alayed was murdered by Ahmed Al`Khatib in his

:05:36. > :05:40.brother's flat. Her body was buried near the A19. The remains have never

:05:41. > :05:48.been found despite an extensive search. Ahmed Al`Khatib and his

:05:49. > :05:54.brother both deny murder but they do admit intending to pervert the

:05:55. > :06:00.course of justice by transporting and concealing her body. Ahmed

:06:01. > :06:28.Al`Khatib's brother denies that charge and I should point out that

:06:29. > :06:32.he is not accused of murder. A man has been charged after a

:06:33. > :06:36.54`year`old woman was injured by a dog in Lancaster. It is not to be

:06:37. > :06:47.the first time that new laws have been used. Jade Anderson was mauled

:06:48. > :06:50.to death by a pack of dogs. Unemployment in the North West fell

:06:51. > :06:57.by 11,000 in the last quarter. That is according to figures from the

:06:58. > :07:01.Office of National Statistics. Seven point cent of the work for workforce

:07:02. > :07:13.is never employed. Liverpool City Council is backing a

:07:14. > :07:17.call to ban unsupervised tanning booths after a sharp rise in skin

:07:18. > :07:18.cancer rates among women in the city. The local authority says there

:07:19. > :07:31.been a 130% increase in cases over At this high school, a group of year

:07:32. > :07:36.19 eaters are discussing the dangers of sunbeds. Rates of skin cancer and

:07:37. > :07:40.sunbed use in Liverpool are among the highest in the UK. These

:07:41. > :07:46.sessions are intended to undermine what is sometimes call the city's

:07:47. > :07:50.sunbed culture. There are other spray tans and fake tans and make up

:07:51. > :07:54.that you can use instead which give the same effect. This is a

:07:55. > :08:02.frightening reality of skin cancer. As a young teenager, this woman used

:08:03. > :08:06.sunbeds. But last year she got devastating news. The mole on her

:08:07. > :08:07.arm was diagnosed as a malignant melanoma, the most dangerous form of

:08:08. > :08:18.skin cancer. People ask, you know, skin cancer. People ask, you know,

:08:19. > :08:24.what have you done? I just tell them. I just say to someone, yes, it

:08:25. > :08:31.was skin cancer. You get looked out and things like that.

:08:32. > :08:38.I am sorry... Since the year 2000 the number of skin cancer cases

:08:39. > :08:45.among women in Liverpool has let Y 130%. It is up to the council to

:08:46. > :08:51.inspect the tanning salons, but not all are as big and well run as this

:08:52. > :08:55.one in the city centre. If we do not know where the army cannot check

:08:56. > :09:00.them. They could be breaking health and safety regulations and basically

:09:01. > :09:03.giving people radiation poisoning, but we do not know where they are,

:09:04. > :09:09.because they do not have to register. MPs have also backed the

:09:10. > :09:13.idea of a ban on coin`operated tanning booths. The message in

:09:14. > :09:25.Liverpool is that the sunbed culture is to change.

:09:26. > :09:28.been a 130% increase in cases over Liverpool's Famous Cavern Club is

:10:03. > :10:10.Liverpool and what we want to do is just take Liverpool to the world and

:10:11. > :10:13.open Cavern Clubs that represent Britain's culture in Liverpool's

:10:14. > :10:18.culture in other places and the rest of the world. Obviously we cannot do

:10:19. > :10:20.that in the United States. On both sides this involves money. If you do

:10:21. > :10:27.not have the rates you cannot publicise memorabilia or your tours

:10:28. > :10:36.is anything over in America. We can publicise things, but what we cannot

:10:37. > :10:39.do is treat our brand `` trade our brand in their territory. What we

:10:40. > :10:43.want to be able to do is claim are to be able to do that and we have

:10:44. > :10:48.every right. You are taking on pretty big boys. What are your

:11:09. > :11:16.stage of the case now. Thank you very much for joining us.

:11:17. > :11:24.A glorious evening in Liverpool. Still to come:

:11:25. > :11:26.reports. Seconds out as Tyson Fury goes all

:11:27. > :11:35.out to become a legend of the sport. And it is a lovely evening to be

:11:36. > :11:39.beside the seaside. We will be live from the top of

:11:40. > :11:43.Blackpool Tower as it celebrates its prickly.

:11:44. > :11:48.`` its birth they. out to become a legend of the sport.

:11:49. > :11:52.With the European elections approaching, one of the key issues

:11:53. > :11:55.for voters to consider is the impact on business. Labour and the

:11:56. > :11:59.Conservatives say the European Union is good for jobs. But opponents such

:12:00. > :12:02.as the UK Independence Party say it creates too much red tape. Our

:12:03. > :12:04.political editor Arif Ansari has been to Liverpool to hear some of

:12:05. > :12:28.the arguments. the arguments.

:12:29. > :12:31.Liverpool knows something about trade, and so does

:12:32. > :12:35.ChargePoint Technology in Speke, which manufactures high`precision

:12:36. > :12:39.valves. It has benefited from substantial European grants and

:12:40. > :12:41.exports a third of its products to Europe. Those barriers are not

:12:42. > :12:45.there, we can trade freely with those countries without too much red

:12:46. > :12:49.tape and that facilitates growth in the business. What are you doing

:12:50. > :12:52.here? Basically what I do is I turn dull metal into shiny metal. Theresa

:12:59. > :13:01.Griffin hopes for a similar transformation to go from Labour

:13:02. > :13:04.candidate to a very pro`European MEP. Do they really want to say a

:13:05. > :13:08.company like this is closed for business in the rest of Europe when

:13:09. > :13:11.over 90% of its product is actually exported? But the UK Independence

:13:12. > :13:14.Party is fighting Labour with the opposite arguments. Freed from the

:13:15. > :13:17.regulation of the EU they would actually have an opportunity to

:13:18. > :13:21.trade more with the rest of the globe, they would actually reduce

:13:22. > :13:23.their costs and it would also, more importantly, for somewhere like the

:13:24. > :13:26.north`west where there are 4.9 million businesses, they would

:13:27. > :13:28.actually increase the number of workers. Another factory producing

:13:29. > :13:31.politicians. Chancellor George Osborne at a wax`blending plant in

:13:32. > :13:34.Chorley, campaigning to stop Tory support melting away. People want a

:13:35. > :13:37.European Union that supports jobs in Lancashire and the north`west. The

:13:38. > :13:40.only people that can deliver that change are the Conservatives. We

:13:41. > :13:43.want to deliver that change in Europe. And we want to offer the

:13:44. > :13:46.British people a referendum on our membership of Europe. That

:13:47. > :13:47.referendum promise probably reflects Europe's diminishing political

:13:48. > :14:01.support, despite its economic power. Tomorrow Arif will be looking

:14:02. > :14:03.at the prospects for three of the other parties hoping to win

:14:04. > :14:06.a seat in Europe. There are a total of 11 parties

:14:07. > :14:09.standing in the European There's a full list

:14:10. > :14:13.on your screen now. For more information you can take

:14:14. > :14:27.a look on the website Outgoing Manchester United captain

:14:28. > :14:30.Nemanja Vidic has denied that player power was one of the factors

:14:31. > :14:33.in former manager David Moyes' failure at Old Trafford.

:14:34. > :14:36.There had been suggestions that the player stopped trying

:14:37. > :14:38.for their new boss but the defender, who is leaving

:14:39. > :14:40.the club to join Inter Milan, says the players did everything

:14:41. > :14:47.David Moyes asked of them. Mind she's cricketers put up a fight

:14:48. > :14:54.in their final championship match. They could not invent a heavy defeat

:14:55. > :14:59.at Lord's. They were 45`5. At one point they had a mini recovery but

:15:00. > :15:00.they could not bat out the final day. Eventually they lost by ten

:15:01. > :15:10.wickets. David Moyes asked of them.

:15:11. > :15:14.The heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury says he doesn't just want become

:15:15. > :15:17.a world champion, he wants to become a legend of the sport.

:15:18. > :15:21.Tyson, who lives in Morecambe, was speaking at the opening of a new gym

:15:22. > :15:24.and community facility in Bolton. The controversial fighter will live

:15:25. > :15:27.and train there as he builds up to his highly anticipated clash with

:15:28. > :15:31.Derek Chisora in Manchester in July. Richard Askam took a deep breath

:15:32. > :15:32.and a stepladder and went to speak to the man himself.

:15:33. > :15:43.He is a man who likes to make a statement. Not always the one that

:15:44. > :15:49.you are expecting. This was Tyson Fury today at the opening of his new

:15:50. > :15:53.gym in Bolton. All smiles, but at his own admission he is a man who's

:15:54. > :16:05.made cancelling as fast as his fist. `` mood can swing. I think I

:16:06. > :16:10.better be on my best behaviour. I can be happy one minute and mad and

:16:11. > :16:13.next. The smallest thing can put me in a bad mood or turn me the other

:16:14. > :16:22.way. Somebody asking you annoying questions! No, questions are great,

:16:23. > :16:27.sometimes they just get a bit low. I remember you talking to me a couple

:16:28. > :16:32.of years ago, you seemed to reflect upon much darker moments then. Have

:16:33. > :16:37.you changed? Dark, bright, whatever moments. They are all part of life,

:16:38. > :16:45.aren't they? I enjoy routine, that's what I enjoy. When I am allowed to

:16:46. > :16:48.just run wild and do what Awad, I do everything for the first week or

:16:49. > :16:55.so, but once that is out of my system I am bored and there's not

:16:56. > :16:59.much else to do and get low. I want to unify the division, I want to do

:17:00. > :17:07.great things in boxing and I want to retire undefeated as well. Not a lot

:17:08. > :17:10.there? A short list! It is possible, because I believe that any man can

:17:11. > :17:27.do anything that he wants to do in life.

:17:28. > :17:32.Motorists were held up for ever as this morning after a lorry carrying

:17:33. > :17:34.live chickens crashed on the M62 this morning.

:17:35. > :17:41.Thousands of birds were on the wastes. But hundreds made their way

:17:42. > :17:45.up an embankment and into a field. Campaigners are now trying to

:17:46. > :17:53.rehouse them. It has been quite a day for these

:17:54. > :18:31.chickens. They started in creates on the back of

:18:32. > :18:32.chicken. About 3000 birds were on the truck. Hundreds were killed and

:18:33. > :18:37.around 2000 were captured. Hundreds more were rescued by a pet

:18:38. > :19:55.sanctuary. since 1894, and today a huge party's

:19:56. > :19:57.been held to celebrate Blackpool Tower's 120th birthday.

:19:58. > :19:59.It was originally inspired by Paris' Eiffel Tower,

:20:00. > :20:02.but Lancashire's version has a ballroom and a circus too.

:20:03. > :20:04.Naomi Cornwell has been following the celebrations and we can go live

:20:05. > :20:12.to her at the top of the tower now. That is the golden mail in all its

:20:13. > :20:17.splendour and the sunshine tonight. It is a lovely evening to be beside

:20:18. > :20:26.the seaside and we're better to see black bull from Dan the very top of

:20:27. > :20:32.the terror. `` tower. It has been enjoyed by thousands and thousands

:20:33. > :20:41.of holiday`makers and locals alike. Today hundreds of them gathered for

:20:42. > :20:45.a huge birthday party. After 120 years of putting on a

:20:46. > :20:48.show, you did not have to look far to find some entertainers to get the

:20:49. > :20:54.party jumping today. They have in preparing for months. We are

:20:55. > :21:04.currently undertaking a restoration to the facade of the tower. Being

:21:05. > :21:10.from Blackpool it is quite a big, iconic piece of Blackpool history.

:21:11. > :21:14.After 120 years the tower might not look very different from the outside

:21:15. > :21:24.but it is constantly having to adapt to the times. There is a brand`new

:21:25. > :21:30.for decent upstairs. There is also a skywalk experience, that is

:21:31. > :21:34.brand`new. The terror has been here for 120 years. A similar experience

:21:35. > :21:39.to what people were doing here is ago, but a modern version. Fans

:21:40. > :21:42.around the country sent their favourite memorabilia to mark the

:21:43. > :21:50.anniversary. Everyone here has a Tower story, whether that is the

:21:51. > :21:54.dancers that come three times a week, or those here just for the

:21:55. > :21:58.anniversary. Womack you meet new people and people from all over the

:21:59. > :22:08.world. There is no one else quite like it in the world. For locals and

:22:09. > :22:22.holiday`makers alike, the tower has happy memories.

:22:23. > :22:28.When the ten two opened in 1894 tickets just cost sixpence. For a

:22:29. > :22:31.limited time this afternoon that is what they were charging to come up

:22:32. > :22:36.here. Not surprisingly they sold out very fast, there was huge demand.

:22:37. > :22:41.Let us talk to the general manager of the tower. Why is this so

:22:42. > :22:47.important to everyone and Blackpool? It is a place to come to have

:22:48. > :22:52.amazing experiences and to weave with memories that last a lifetime.

:22:53. > :22:56.In 1890 41 of the marketing messages was, Blackpool Tower, a place where

:22:57. > :23:01.our factory girl can be a duchess for the day. If you do not like

:23:02. > :23:05.heights, turn away, we're about to show you the skywalk. That is the

:23:06. > :23:08.glass floor that you can walk across with this year dropped to the

:23:09. > :23:13.promenade below. We are just looking at one of the things you are hoping

:23:14. > :23:18.will be one of the next thing is to evolve for the terror. The max and

:23:19. > :23:23.next big thing for me and for all of us, at the end of 2015, the

:23:24. > :23:28.structure will be complete and the scaffolding will be taken off the

:23:29. > :23:36.terror. I personally am so excited, I will be cartwheeling along the

:23:37. > :23:39.comedy carpet outside. We look forward to that. All that remains is

:23:40. > :23:46.to say happy birthday to Blackpool Tower and from 380 feet above the

:23:47. > :23:51.promenade, it is back to the studio. At glass floor is horrible.

:23:52. > :23:55.What have you. It is a beautiful view. We went up recently and we had

:23:56. > :23:59.to come straight back down because the wind was too high. That is the

:24:00. > :24:02.only problem. Your dress looks just as blue as the

:24:03. > :24:03.sky. A lovely day to be beside the

:24:04. > :24:12.seaside. Plenty of blue skies over Blackpool

:24:13. > :24:22.and across the North West as you saw there. Temperatures continue to

:24:23. > :24:27.improve tomorrow. 20 or 21 Celsius. There is plenty of cloud around, as

:24:28. > :24:30.you can see, as we head into Friday. Tonight actually there is plenty of

:24:31. > :24:33.sunshine around at the moment but cloud will begin to build as we head

:24:34. > :24:39.into the overnight period. Some rain in places, some light winds. Some

:24:40. > :24:45.mist and fog patches forming by dawn. The temperatures are not so
