:00:08. > :00:11.is charged with child sex offences The Hillsborough inquiry hears how

:00:12. > :00:27.stadium safety concerns were raised How the beautiful game,

:00:28. > :00:31.and comedian John Bishop, are giving The whole population that plunges

:00:32. > :00:43.into the sea! Bracing Blackpool gets

:00:44. > :00:53.a step closer to a new museum. A paediatric doctor has been

:00:54. > :00:58.charged with child sex offences. Greater Manchester Police released

:00:59. > :01:01.the news within the past hour The man is said to have worked

:01:02. > :01:05.at a number of hospitals in Greater Manchester

:01:06. > :01:08.and detectives are keen to hear from anyone who may have made

:01:09. > :01:11.contact with him via the internet. Our chief reporter, Dave Guest,

:01:12. > :01:15.is at police headquarters now. What more can you tell us

:01:16. > :01:29.about this man? He is a 31`year`old and works as a

:01:30. > :01:35.junior doctor in the theatrics. I understand he has worked in a number

:01:36. > :01:40.of hospitals in Greater Manchester. `` in paediatrics. He has been

:01:41. > :01:45.charged with possessing indecent images of children and engaging in

:01:46. > :01:50.sexual activity with a child. What have police told us so far?

:01:51. > :01:54.They say he was first arrested on the 2nd of May on suspicion of

:01:55. > :01:59.possessing indecent images of children. On that day, a search was

:02:00. > :02:03.carried out at a house and a computer and other equipment were

:02:04. > :02:07.seized. As a result of reviewing those items, they further arrested

:02:08. > :02:14.him on me the 22nd on suspicion of engaging in sexual activity with a

:02:15. > :02:20.child, a boy of 15. The Chiefs super and says that this investigation is

:02:21. > :02:26.still very much in its early stages. `` Chiefs super and in the. She says

:02:27. > :02:29.that she understands that people may be concerned because he has worked

:02:30. > :02:34.in hospitals but at this stage the investigation is very much focusing

:02:35. > :02:36.on people who he may have met through the Internet rather than his

:02:37. > :02:39.employment. What happens next?

:02:40. > :02:45.He is due to appear at Crown Court He is due to appear at Crown Court

:02:46. > :02:48.process. As I say, the investigation process. As I say, the investigation

:02:49. > :02:50.is in its early stages. Thank you for that.

:02:51. > :02:54.A jury has heard that ?120,000 was spent on safety at Hillsborough

:02:55. > :03:10.An incident in 1981 at the same ground when several fans were

:03:11. > :03:13.injured lead to plans being drawn up for improvements to the terracing

:03:14. > :03:19.and barriers. Most were never implemented. Our correspondent joins

:03:20. > :03:27.us now from Warrington. Tell us more. What is important for the

:03:28. > :03:31.jurors is that they get a real understanding of how events

:03:32. > :03:36.escalated 25 years ago, resulting in the death of 96 football fans. Last

:03:37. > :03:40.week, the jurors were taken to Hillsborough to gain an insight into

:03:41. > :03:51.Today, the heard evidence from a Today, the heard evidence from a

:03:52. > :03:54.structural engineer. In 1979, a safety act was brought in which

:03:55. > :03:59.meant stadiums needed have a safety certificate. The court heard how

:04:00. > :04:03.Sheffield Wednesday have spent ?120,000 in order to be granted that

:04:04. > :04:09.certificate. Concerns were raised following a crush in 1981. The court

:04:10. > :04:11.heard that recommendations for safety changes to gates and

:04:12. > :04:18.turnstiles were made but never carried out. Christina Lambert said

:04:19. > :04:23.that even after evidence on the 15th of April 1989, crash barriers did

:04:24. > :04:27.not meet the recommended safety requirements and that police had

:04:28. > :04:31.raised concerns before the disaster. A lot of evidence centred on other

:04:32. > :04:40.sporting disasters here and abroad, today. Tell of more about that. John

:04:41. > :04:44.described a disaster in 1946 in which 33 Bolton Wanderers fans were

:04:45. > :04:51.crushed. He also talked about a fire which killed 66 spectators in

:04:52. > :04:54.Bradford. And on that same day, a 15`year`old boy was crushed in

:04:55. > :04:58.Birmingham city. What lessons had been learned and was there in the

:04:59. > :04:59.robust legislation in place? The inquest continues.

:05:00. > :05:02.Thank you very much. An investigation's underway after

:05:03. > :05:05.a man was shot in a pub in Salford. Police were called to the

:05:06. > :05:08.Ashley Brook Pub on Liverpool Street at around 11:30

:05:09. > :05:09.last night. The victim's currently

:05:10. > :05:11.being treated in hospital. It's the fourth shooting

:05:12. > :05:14.in the area in a month. Detectives say

:05:15. > :05:16.the incidents aren't linked. A 59 year old man has been charged

:05:17. > :05:19.by detectives investigating historic sexual abuse at music schools

:05:20. > :05:22.in Manchester. Nicholas Smith has been charged with

:05:23. > :05:26.one count of indecent assault. It relates to

:05:27. > :05:27.an alleged incident involving a teenage girl, between 1976 and

:05:28. > :05:48.1978, who was a pupil at Chetham's Police have released this image of a

:05:49. > :05:52.man who they want to talk to about a scam that was used to dupe a

:05:53. > :05:57.pensioner out of his entire life savings.

:05:58. > :05:59.A Victoria Cross recipient from Middleton has been recognised

:06:00. > :06:03.in the town, with the unveiling of a street sign in his honour.

:06:04. > :06:05.Lance Corporal Joel Halliwell was awarded the medal after rescuing

:06:06. > :06:09.ten injured soldiers from no`man's land during the First World War.

:06:10. > :06:11.The region's Liberal Democrats are debating their future tonight

:06:12. > :06:13.after another dreadful showing at the polls.

:06:14. > :06:19.We'll be hearing from him in a minute.

:06:20. > :06:22.But first Beccy's been looking at how the region's political

:06:23. > :06:26.landscape has changed in the wake of the European elections.

:06:27. > :06:29.UKIP's national success has been replicated here in the North West,

:06:30. > :06:33.even though they didn't top the vote.

:06:34. > :06:35.Labour received 34% of the votes cast.

:06:36. > :06:42.That meant that three of the eight seats here changed colour.

:06:43. > :06:45.Two of them won by UKIP, one by Labour.

:06:46. > :06:48.Nick Griffin, the British National Party Leader who

:06:49. > :06:56.He was one of ten Liberal Democrat MEPs kicked`out across the country.

:06:57. > :06:59.Here in the North West, they have been wiped`out.

:07:00. > :07:02.We'll now be represented in Europe by three MEPs from both Labour

:07:03. > :07:06.For the Lib Dems, the European election disappointment

:07:07. > :07:10.followed a miserable set of local election results last week.

:07:11. > :07:13.Stuart Flinders has been speaking to their outgoing MEP about the

:07:14. > :07:19.problems now facing his party and about needing to find a new job.

:07:20. > :07:21.Chris Davies will be spending rather more time in his garden

:07:22. > :07:24.in the Pennines this summer than he would have liked.

:07:25. > :07:37.It is quite a contrast. Two months ago I became a meet the offer here

:07:38. > :07:42.with an environmental author, if you like, in Brussels for the work I

:07:43. > :07:46.have done. Two monthly tour, despite all of the work I have done in

:07:47. > :07:49.exposing expensed fraud and my own transparency in financial matters

:07:50. > :07:55.and a real sense of achievement over the years, I am out on my ear.

:07:56. > :07:59.The voters have deserted the Lib Dems.

:08:00. > :08:05.He says it's the cost of being in coalition.

:08:06. > :08:13.I support Nick Clegg. I think he has done a fantastic job. What little is

:08:14. > :08:16.calling for him to go? I can understand that everybody wants a

:08:17. > :08:21.magic bullet but changing the leader and not changing the policies, and

:08:22. > :08:24.nobody wants to, I don't see that this will do anything other than

:08:25. > :08:25.give us a couple of weeks used in the polls.

:08:26. > :08:29.Chris Davies burst onto the scene when he won the Westminster seat

:08:30. > :08:31.of Littleborough and Saddleworth in a byelection in 1995.The

:08:32. > :08:33.lawmaker became lawbreaker when he walked into Stockport Police

:08:34. > :08:37.Station with a small amount of cannabis in a protest against

:08:38. > :08:40.drugs laws, later pleading guilty to possession of a Class B drug.

:08:41. > :08:43.He doesn't rule out standing for Europe again, and admits that

:08:44. > :08:49.whatever happens he'll be well looked after by Brussels.

:08:50. > :08:56.The pension kicks in at 63. Of course, there have been times where

:08:57. > :09:00.I have criticised it and said we should change these arrangements.

:09:01. > :09:05.Just at this moment, I am not criticising the! You will probably

:09:06. > :09:13.end up earning more on the European pension than many people do on their

:09:14. > :09:16.salaries. Yes, it shed no more tears for an MEP. I shed no tears for the

:09:17. > :09:20.staff I have to sack. It may not be the last we hear

:09:21. > :09:23.of Chris Davies. Stuart Flinders,

:09:24. > :09:25.BBC North West Tonight. The Liberal Democrats in Liverpool

:09:26. > :09:27.announced tonight that they are to hold a meeting to discuss

:09:28. > :09:30.Nick Clegg's leadership after they were virtually wiped`out

:09:31. > :09:33.in the local elections last week. The Lib Dem MP for Southport,

:09:34. > :09:39.John Pugh, The results are very depressing

:09:40. > :09:47.because we lost 72% of councillors that dude. 91% of the Euro MPs.

:09:48. > :09:52.There is a large part of England without Liberal Democrat

:09:53. > :09:56.representation and no opposition to Labour. How worried are you? In my

:09:57. > :10:03.constituency, things went well. We are one of the strongholds, the rare

:10:04. > :10:08.islands. The trouble is there are so many black holes opening round of

:10:09. > :10:14.that nobody can be sure of outcome. You need to change leader? My

:10:15. > :10:20.personal preference is for Vince Cable, who I believe would resonate

:10:21. > :10:23.better with many voters and who is a continuity candidate in the sense

:10:24. > :10:27.that he has been in government, is part of the Coalition. He can defend

:10:28. > :10:32.the record and is very popular. He does not want the job. He said now

:10:33. > :10:41.was not the time for fighting within yourselves. I think Vince would,

:10:42. > :10:47.where there are a vacancy, put his name forward. You have Nick Clegg,

:10:48. > :10:52.currently being pilloried for abandoning his tuition fees pledge.

:10:53. > :10:55.You have somebody like Nigel Farage who abandoned his whole money fast

:10:56. > :11:03.and did very well. That is a problem that we have to analyse, understand

:11:04. > :11:08.and correct for. `` whole manifesto. Part of what you'd rather is that

:11:09. > :11:11.the Lib Dems have never had to make the tough decisions and affect

:11:12. > :11:15.people 's lives. You have been the refuge for the disgruntled voter, if

:11:16. > :11:20.you like. No, you're not in that position any more and UKIP, perhaps,

:11:21. > :11:23.have taken that ground. I don't think that's a totally satisfactory

:11:24. > :11:27.explanation for our decline. In many areas of the country, a local

:11:28. > :11:31.government, we held power on councils. Because we held power and

:11:32. > :11:37.made difficult decisions, we did not then lose votes. In many cases we

:11:38. > :11:40.increased our. We have made some mistakes in coalition and we have to

:11:41. > :11:43.rectify them. But thank you for your time.

:11:44. > :11:46.A Lancaster man has become the first in the country to face

:11:47. > :11:48.a charge under the newly amended Dangerous Dogs Act.

:11:49. > :12:36.The law now allows owners to be prosecuted if dogs carry out

:12:37. > :12:39.This prosecution is the first since new amendments to

:12:40. > :13:49.the Dangerous Dogs Act came into force countrywide on May the 13th.

:13:50. > :14:06.And it has been one of the nation's favourite resorts for decades and

:14:07. > :14:07.the council wants to open a museum to celebrate the history of the

:14:08. > :14:12.The First World War reshaped a continent and touched the lives

:14:13. > :14:16.As we near the centenary of the outbreak many people are

:14:17. > :14:19.finding out about their families' links to the conflict.

:14:20. > :14:22.One of those is Graham Liver who's one of ours and breakfast

:14:23. > :14:29.He's been on a journey to Flanders to follow in the footsteps of two

:14:30. > :14:44.of his relatives who lost their lives on the western front.

:14:45. > :14:50.Like so many parts of the Northwest, suffered many casualties during the

:14:51. > :14:55.First World War, including two members of my family. Amongst the

:14:56. > :15:01.names of the men who never came home are my great great cousins John and

:15:02. > :15:04.Tom. They came from a part of the city which suffered heavy losses. It

:15:05. > :15:08.seems to have been the working`class parts of town that where worst

:15:09. > :15:13.affected. There were couple of streets that had 20 people killed.

:15:14. > :15:18.Parts of Stewart and were badly affected also. It is clear that they

:15:19. > :15:22.made the ultimate sacrifice but for me they are still just names on a

:15:23. > :15:25.plaque. I wanted to find out what happened to them in Belgium and it

:15:26. > :15:32.is a journey which almost certainly started here. John lived with his

:15:33. > :15:37.mum and dad and four months after signing up for the Lancashire

:15:38. > :15:41.Fusiliers swapped the linoleum works for the battlefields of Flanders. It

:15:42. > :15:46.all started for him here. It did indeed. The British were attacking a

:15:47. > :15:51.German fortified position here. In front of the farm was a range of

:15:52. > :15:57.trenches, bunkers, fortifications. Just there. They were called

:15:58. > :15:59.galleries. So you can see the farm and galleries commanded the

:16:00. > :16:05.battlefields. John was then wounded on the field. He was taken to a

:16:06. > :16:10.dressing station in the corner of the battlefield and was obsessed and

:16:11. > :16:20.taken back, sadly, to where he died a few days later. This is the

:16:21. > :16:27.cemetery. He is buried just in this next role. 4231, Lancashire

:16:28. > :16:38.Fusiliers, 24th of September 1970. Gone but not forgotten. `` 1917.

:16:39. > :16:53.For those who do not have a known grave, they are remembered every

:16:54. > :17:00.night in April. `` Ypres. TRUMPETS PLAY

:17:01. > :17:07.night in April. `` Ypres. TRUMPETS

:17:08. > :17:14.What an extraordinary journey. Tom, he mentioned at the start, we will

:17:15. > :17:19.find out what happened to him tomorrow. Apparently he survived the

:17:20. > :17:22.battle of the song but was sent back out to Flanders were sadly he lost

:17:23. > :17:27.his life. Fascinating series. Amazing. Let's move on.

:17:28. > :17:30.A major football competition took place in Liverpool today but it's

:17:31. > :17:33.All the players are, or were, homeless.

:17:34. > :17:36.They play in their own league and today was the end

:17:37. > :17:40.The aim is to give another focus to the lives

:17:41. > :17:43.of homeless people to help them find a job and somewhere to live.

:17:44. > :17:45.And as Lindsey Prosser reports they had

:17:46. > :17:56.This is much more than a game of football, here they're building

:17:57. > :17:59.confidence to rebuild lives and comic John Bishop is supporting the

:18:00. > :18:13.You are on the fringes of society if you're homeless. People judge you

:18:14. > :18:17.before they know you. This gives them an opportunity to realise that

:18:18. > :18:19.they are not alone and have some value.

:18:20. > :18:21.James became homeless as teenager, when his mum died.

:18:22. > :18:24.Playing in a homeless football team gave him back his self esteem.

:18:25. > :18:28.James is now at university and plays semi`professional football.

:18:29. > :18:34.It gave me the confidence to play again and even now to be a role

:18:35. > :18:37.model to the others and coach them. He may not have been playing

:18:38. > :18:50.John Bishop was providing I will be juggling bottles in the

:18:51. > :18:55.minute! Everybody has come on a level playing field and are able to

:18:56. > :18:57.just be themselves. You can be having a bad day and then you look

:18:58. > :19:02.forward to this competition to stop it brings people closer together.

:19:03. > :19:03.You get the adrenaline. Playing with friends and helping each other out,

:19:04. > :19:07.it is good. The football teams are a way

:19:08. > :19:10.of enabling outreach workers to gain the trust of homeless people

:19:11. > :19:19.and help them to get back on track. The football is the carrot. Once

:19:20. > :19:21.being gauge them in football we can link them into other services.

:19:22. > :19:27.Health, education, training or stop it is important. Homeless people are

:19:28. > :19:30.on the bottom rung of the ladder and it is about as pulling them up.

:19:31. > :19:34.It's hope the scheme can be extended to other cities across the UK.

:19:35. > :19:38.Lindsey Prosser, BBC North West Tonight, Liverpool.

:19:39. > :19:44.They had a good day. Almost as good as this lot. I do not have the best

:19:45. > :19:48.glass of! I thought that was your costume for

:19:49. > :19:54.the summer party. What can you say? ! You are probably wondering where

:19:55. > :20:09.it will all end. The Premier League at this rate!

:20:10. > :20:15.Fleetwood are promoted for the first time of their history!

:20:16. > :20:19.The moment when Fleetwood town and owns themselves on the biggest

:20:20. > :20:26.stage. Absolutely amazing. Words fail me. It is a lot of hard work by

:20:27. > :20:35.a lot of people. I cannot believe it. I am still pinching myself. This

:20:36. > :20:42.is unbelievable. CHEERING

:20:43. > :20:45.What a moment this is. Fans who have seen their team...

:20:46. > :20:52.SHOUTING They are ready to go to League one!

:20:53. > :21:03.Really fantastic. It means everything to us, everything.

:21:04. > :21:08.COMMENTATOR: In! That bit of luck that you need in games like this and

:21:09. > :21:16.I am over the moon to do it for the boys. I was crying excellent Mac

:21:17. > :21:23.Electric. The perfect present for the older on his 44th birthday. You

:21:24. > :21:32.cannot buy that feeling. Long may it continue. `` the owner. Not just the

:21:33. > :21:39.boys but myself and the staff, they deserved this day. We look forward

:21:40. > :21:43.to next season. For the cod Army, next season is the

:21:44. > :21:50.chance to shake up the big boys of League one cannot come soon enough.

:21:51. > :21:54.Safe to say they enjoyed their day out!

:21:55. > :21:59.Looks like a lot of fun. Well done to Fleetwood and all the

:22:00. > :22:05.people involved. Tranmere Rovers have appointed a new

:22:06. > :22:09.manager. He succeeds Ron Amery was sacked after admitting breaching FA

:22:10. > :22:14.betting regulations. The Roses match looks to be heading

:22:15. > :22:20.towards a draw. Lancashire bowled Yorkshire out for 243`5.

:22:21. > :22:27.That is a lead of 130 going into the final day of the match.

:22:28. > :22:31.Can be an exciting finish if the weather holds out.

:22:32. > :22:35.It was the world's first working`class seaside resort.

:22:36. > :22:39.Blackpool Council wants to create a ?20 million easy to showcase the

:22:40. > :22:43.ten's history. Today, the council received more than ?1 million of

:22:44. > :22:48.lottery money to develop the plan. They hope the museum will be located

:22:49. > :22:52.in the Winter Gardens. Blackpool has been a booming seaside

:22:53. > :22:56.resort since the 1850s. It soon become the place to come when the

:22:57. > :22:59.factories closed for the week. Now, the council says it should have a

:23:00. > :23:04.museum to celebrate its rich history. It is a real opportunity to

:23:05. > :23:08.bring all of the threads Blackpool live together. The entertainment

:23:09. > :23:14.culture, the party town reputation that we have. You know, the sun,

:23:15. > :23:19.sand, sea and donkeys. To allow people to explore what lies behind

:23:20. > :23:22.that. The plan is to place the museum in the Winter Gardens. The

:23:23. > :23:28.museum would cost around ?21 million. The museum hopes half ``

:23:29. > :23:34.the council hopes half will come from the lottery fund. In 1850s, the

:23:35. > :23:39.railway came to Blackpool and that brought all of the mill people

:23:40. > :23:43.because they could jump on a train and get off at lap pool and they are

:23:44. > :23:47.on holiday. This was why it is so important for us to have a history.

:24:20. > :24:21.months to develop its plans. A lot of happy memories being

:24:22. > :24:28.brought back. A lot of dancing by the looks of it!

:24:29. > :24:32.Nowhere better on a nice day in Blackpool. It must have been busy

:24:33. > :24:37.yesterday with Bank Holiday Monday, sunshine and we forecasted! You did!

:24:45. > :24:47.bit better for the children. Looking ahead to Friday, that is when the

:26:10. > :26:12.does not look good and does not get better. It is cloudy with outbreaks

:26:13. > :26:16.of rain and will be a heavy burst from to time. You can see how

:26:17. > :26:22.fragmented. You will get dry spells every now and again. You will not

:26:23. > :26:28.get out and about in it. It is just what you see. The breeze is not

:26:29. > :26:34.terribly strong but not a great direction, north`east. It brings a

:26:35. > :26:37.cool tool. Tomorrow I think realistically it is 13 and 14 for

:26:43. > :26:46.we look ahead, Friday and Saturday, as I said, things started to settle
