:00:00. > 3:59:59Inevitable, I suppose. That's all from the News at Six. Goodbye from

:00:00. > :00:08.me. On Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest

:00:09. > :00:17.Tonight. Our top story: Spl`shing the cash, City announce thehr latest

:00:18. > :00:24.?1 billion signing. Housing. In one of the most deprived areas of

:00:25. > :00:28.Manchester. The plan is to regenerate the area. Also tonight:

:00:29. > :00:33.Vandals destroy gravestones at a Jewish cemetery, police say it's a

:00:34. > :00:38.sickening and cruel act of racism. My mother's stone had been knocked

:00:39. > :00:47.over but some of the stones have been smashed which is horrendous.

:00:48. > :00:54.Three of a kind but Wimbledon serves up mixed fortunes for our hopefuls.

:00:55. > :00:56.And we meet the Blackpool pdnsioner who has just won another sand yacht

:00:57. > :01:07.title. The owners of Manchester City

:01:08. > :01:10.Football Club are no strangdr to big buy outs and mega contracts for star

:01:11. > :01:14.players. But their latest transaction will probably strprise

:01:15. > :01:18.you. Housing. New housing for some of the most deprived communhties in

:01:19. > :01:21.East Manchester. Club owners the Abu Dhabi United Group are behind a ?1

:01:22. > :01:39.billion scheme to regeneratd Ancoats and Islington. Jayne McCubbhn is

:01:40. > :01:45.there now. Look how gorgeous it is here and how close the city centre

:01:46. > :01:54.is. What this does is try to regenerate an area which has been

:01:55. > :02:01.left behind by the property crash. The council has set up a business

:02:02. > :02:08.with Abu Dhabi United Group, that has half ?1 billion from cltb money

:02:09. > :02:15.and the rest will come from private investors. What business dods a

:02:16. > :02:19.football club have in the btsiness of public property? This is

:02:20. > :02:24.Manchester City doing what they do best. But now it's owners w`nt to do

:02:25. > :02:27.more. So what do owners of the bling club, with the bling dressing room,

:02:28. > :02:30.the bling jumbo jet want to invest in next? Housing. No, not housing

:02:31. > :02:34.here, housing here. In Anco`ts and Islington. Two of the most deprived

:02:35. > :02:39.neighborhoods in the countrx. Pat's lived here for 80 years. Wh`t does

:02:40. > :02:48.she make of the new club owners big investment? I cannot understand

:02:49. > :02:57.that. I cannot get to the bottom of that. Not odd at all says the

:02:58. > :03:06.council and club owners. Thhs is a purely commercial deal. It hs

:03:07. > :03:11.win`win for the city. Deals like this do not come along ever. It is

:03:12. > :03:15.the first time anyone can rdmember a deal of this sort coming to

:03:16. > :03:20.Manchester, an investment of this scale. Tracy McKey points ott a

:03:21. > :03:23.block of flats that had been derelict for almost 15 years. The

:03:24. > :03:32.property crash stalled regeneration here after the Commonwealth Games.

:03:33. > :03:40.The new deal hopes to kick start it. We need shops, pubs, things for

:03:41. > :03:45.kids, we need all sorts. I `m glad it is happening. It is a good deal

:03:46. > :03:53.completely. So, how does a deal like this come about? I am told the

:03:54. > :03:58.people rang Manchester City council and asked for a list of invdstment

:03:59. > :04:03.opportunities. This was one of four ideas, I fired the biggest `nd most

:04:04. > :04:09.expensive and it was this one that the club owners went for. The

:04:10. > :04:16.council would not tell me what the other ideas were full Sheik Mansor

:04:17. > :04:20.is a man with deep pockets. They hope those other schemes cotld yet

:04:21. > :04:28.get off the ground. Is everxone raving about this? One man who was

:04:29. > :04:33.wearing a Man United T`shirt said today this is all about real estate,

:04:34. > :04:39.we will be priced out of thd market. It is true to say this is a

:04:40. > :04:45.commercial deal, they will get a return on this. It is something they

:04:46. > :04:50.are in for the long`term. They want to invest in this community. The

:04:51. > :05:01.watchword has not been affordable housing but desirable housing. The

:05:02. > :05:09.capacity of the lettings Lane end of Hillsborough was more than 0700 two

:05:10. > :05:13.high before the disaster. This was heard at the Hillsborough inquiry

:05:14. > :05:21.this afternoon. I asked our reporter who was in court exactly do the man

:05:22. > :05:25.who gave that information is. He is an expert structural enginedr

:05:26. > :05:28.brought in to give his expert opinion of the state and laxout of

:05:29. > :05:37.the Hillsborough Stadium in April 1989. He has experience of working

:05:38. > :05:42.on sports stadiums. Including the stadium for the London 2012

:05:43. > :05:46.Olympics. He said the capachty of the lettings Lane terraces `ll came

:05:47. > :05:53.down to the crash barriers `nd whether they were the correct height

:05:54. > :05:55.or laid out inappropriately. He said many of them were significantly

:05:56. > :06:01.lower than they should have been according to guidelines. He also

:06:02. > :06:05.said the gaps between those crash barriers was on many occasions to

:06:06. > :06:10.wide which would not do anything to stop the waterfall effect when

:06:11. > :06:15.forces are pushed from the back of the terraces down to the front. He

:06:16. > :06:26.said taking that into account, the capacity of the terrace shotld be

:06:27. > :06:30.cut from 7200 or around 5420. So the was guidance in place for how Hibees

:06:31. > :06:33.crash barriers should be and where they were positioned, was anything

:06:34. > :06:42.said about why these guidelhnes were not met? The guidelines werd set

:06:43. > :06:47.down in a booklet issued by the government in the 1970s and reissued

:06:48. > :06:51.in the mid`1980s. Among those guidelines it was said they could be

:06:52. > :06:56.applied flexibly along with common sense and professional judgdment.

:06:57. > :07:02.Many of the witnesses that the jury have heard from for the good apply

:07:03. > :07:09.the guidelines flexibly. Asked about this practice the experts s`id he

:07:10. > :07:14.believed flexibly had been seized upon by a number of people `s a

:07:15. > :07:18.means of extricating themselves from a position they would rather have

:07:19. > :07:26.not got into. He believed the need to be ten more turnstiles for the

:07:27. > :07:37.number of spectators expectdd. He will return tomorrow to continue

:07:38. > :07:41.giving evidence. Thank you. A man's been charged with dangerous driving

:07:42. > :07:44.after a couple died in a three car crash in Salford at the weekend

:07:45. > :07:47.19`year`old Aaron Jones and his girlfriend Amy Hobson, were killed

:07:48. > :07:50.in the accident on the East Lancs Road at Swinton. Carl Wood from

:07:51. > :07:53.Farnworth appeared in court today, charged with causing death by

:07:54. > :07:56.dangerous driving. Another lan arrested at the scene, has been

:07:57. > :08:00.bailed. A man charged with causing the death of a 62`year`old woman by

:08:01. > :08:03.dangerous driving in the Isle of Man has been remanded in custodx.

:08:04. > :08:06.Donovan Kitching, who's 30, has been charged with five offences hncluding

:08:07. > :08:09.causing the death of Gwen V`lentine by dangerous driving. He's due back

:08:10. > :08:12.in court in Douglas in July. A former soldier who's wanted in the

:08:13. > :08:15.United States on fraud charges, has had his appeal against extr`dition

:08:16. > :08:18.rejected by the European Cotrt of Human Rights. David McIntyrd from

:08:19. > :08:26.Hyde is accused of overcharging the US government on a security contract

:08:27. > :08:29.in Iraq. He recently lost a High Court appeal and the rejecthon of

:08:30. > :08:33.his case by the European Cotrt means he'll be extradited within ` month.

:08:34. > :08:36.A million adults in the north west still lack the basic skills needed

:08:37. > :08:40.to use the internet, accordhng to the charity Go On UK. They say just

:08:41. > :08:43.under a fifth of people in the region can't send or receivd emails,

:08:44. > :08:46.use a search engine, browse the internet and complete onlind forms.

:08:47. > :08:49.Gravestones at a Jewish cemdtery in North Manchester have been pushed

:08:50. > :08:52.over and daubed with anti`sdmitic grafitti in what police havd

:08:53. > :08:57.described as a sickening and cruel act of racism. Around 40 gr`vestones

:08:58. > :09:01.have been damaged, some had swastikas painted onto them.

:09:02. > :09:04.Families of those buried at the cemetery in Blackley say thdy're

:09:05. > :09:07.deeply upset by the attack. Greater Manchester Police say they're

:09:08. > :09:12.treating it as a hate crime. Naomi Cornwell reports. This is one of the

:09:13. > :09:20.oldest cemeteries in Greater Manchester. The site off Rochdale

:09:21. > :09:29.Road holds around 10,000 gr`ves But this is what many families have

:09:30. > :09:34.found in recent days. It is quite devastating to see, clearly this is

:09:35. > :09:38.the work of mindless yobs whth nothing better to do apart from rank

:09:39. > :09:47.vandalism which does nobody any good whatsoever. I am macro I am upset

:09:48. > :09:51.and disgusted to say the le`st. My mother's stone has been knocked

:09:52. > :09:54.over. It is horrendous. Arotnd 0 gravestones have been pushed over,

:09:55. > :10:00.causing some to smash. Others have been daubed with swastikas `nd

:10:01. > :10:05.anti`semitic comments. Thesd are hateful incidents and I would say it

:10:06. > :10:09.has taken quite some time to do what they have done. It is quite alarming

:10:10. > :10:13.really and it is something we need to get to the bottom of as soon as

:10:14. > :10:16.possible. Lifting the toppldd gravestones will cost thous`nds of

:10:17. > :10:19.pounds. Many will have to bd replaced. And it's left famhlies

:10:20. > :10:22.deeply upset by the disrespdct shown to their relatives. As relatives

:10:23. > :10:24.arrived today to see whether their families' graves were affected, the

:10:25. > :10:31.charity that maintains the cemetery called on the community to work with

:10:32. > :10:36.them to prevent further dam`ge. We are trying to bring together dignity

:10:37. > :10:42.and respect for those who h`ve gone before rows. These cemeterids need

:10:43. > :10:46.looking after. Today they h`ve been damaged, tomorrow they may be

:10:47. > :10:52.damaged again. We cannot stop people coming in but if we have funding we

:10:53. > :10:56.can put up CCTV cameras, rahse the boundary walls and perhaps put up

:10:57. > :11:02.deterrence. Police are appe`ling for witnesses and say they now have

:11:03. > :11:05.extra patrols in the area. @ Merseyide man has died after a

:11:06. > :11:08.boxing bout at the weekend. Lance Ferguson Prayogg was taking part in

:11:09. > :11:11.so called "White Collar boxhng. The sport isn't regulated like the

:11:12. > :11:14.amateur or professional codd, but aims to given ordinary people the

:11:15. > :11:17.opportunity to fight in a rhng. Lindsey Prosser reports. Thhs is

:11:18. > :11:20.Lance Ferguson Praoygg boxing in an earlier fight in Liverpool, White

:11:21. > :11:23.Collar boxing isn't governed by a professional or amateur codd so

:11:24. > :11:30.isn't subject to the same stringent rules. The boxer collapsed `fter a

:11:31. > :11:33.fight in Nottingham and whilst the cause of his death isn't yet known

:11:34. > :11:42.it has renewed the debate about unlicensed boxing. I knew this was

:11:43. > :11:48.going to happen, it has been coming and it has happened now. It is the

:11:49. > :11:52.very sorrowful thing that it has happened but we knew it was going to

:11:53. > :11:59.happen and it does not bring any good points back to amateur boxing.

:12:00. > :12:08.It makes the people who werd against it more against it. The man who died

:12:09. > :12:11.trained here at this gem, today it is shut and will remain closed until

:12:12. > :12:17.next week. Today the gym pahd tribute on social media twedting

:12:18. > :12:19."RIP to one of our finest boxers... We are all totally devastatdd".

:12:20. > :12:31.Saturday's fight promoter could not be contacted for comment. Still to

:12:32. > :12:37.come on North West Tonight: The young heptathlete from Liverpool who

:12:38. > :12:43.feels her time has come. Gold is my target but it is my first

:12:44. > :12:52.Commonwealth Games. I am hoping to win medals. And he is still flying,

:12:53. > :12:56.the Blackpool pensioner recreating the sand yachting success of his

:12:57. > :13:00.youth. More than a dozen hospitals in our region aren't being honest

:13:01. > :13:02.enough about owning up when things go wrong. That's according to new

:13:03. > :13:07.statistics released by the Department of Health. It's revamped

:13:08. > :13:10.the NHS Choices web site. So now you can discover which hospitals are

:13:11. > :13:14.good at reporting problems `nd which aren't. Our Chief Reporter Dave

:13:15. > :13:23.Guest has spent the day wadhng through the figures and he joins me

:13:24. > :13:28.now. So what have you found. I have found out plots because there are

:13:29. > :13:36.lots of figures bear. The sxstem uses coloured circles, green, blue

:13:37. > :13:42.and red. Green is good, blud is OK and red is poor. One thing hs

:13:43. > :13:46.looking at how good they ard at reporting incidents when thhngs go

:13:47. > :13:52.wrong. Those coming up on the screen are deemed to be among the worst

:13:53. > :13:57.when it comes to reporting hncidents which cause severe harm or dven

:13:58. > :14:03.death to patients. It is important that hospitals have a systel of

:14:04. > :14:09.openness so we can all learn from mistakes and be safer in hospital.

:14:10. > :14:18.Have any hospitals responded? Yes, one trust said from nation hs out of

:14:19. > :14:23.date. They have made changes. When things go wrong senior medics

:14:24. > :14:26.investigate and a weekly newsletter is distributed to staff too sure

:14:27. > :14:31.what has gone wrong and what lessons have been learned. Another trust

:14:32. > :14:41.said they have made improvelents which will be reflected in the

:14:42. > :14:45.future. What else is on the website? The numbers of staff on wards. Some

:14:46. > :14:51.show that they have got mord than 100%, this is explained bec`use

:14:52. > :14:56.sometimes they have patiencd on the ward with particularly spechal needs

:14:57. > :15:02.which have to be catered for. You can also find out about cle`nliness

:15:03. > :15:16.and infection control. You can go online yourself to find out. They

:15:17. > :15:21.are doubts over the Rebel V`lley MP Nigel Evans, he was cleared in April

:15:22. > :15:29.of nine offences but some bdlieve he was so damaged they should seek a

:15:30. > :15:41.new candidate for the next dlection. Our reporter is in the constituency.

:15:42. > :15:47.What is going on? This is a constituency that does not like

:15:48. > :15:52.change, it has only had thrde MPs in three decades. Normally this would

:15:53. > :15:57.be an automatic choice for the Conservative club find me, they have

:15:58. > :16:01.got Nigel Evans, stick with them. They delete things because of the

:16:02. > :16:07.trial but note that the dechsion is looming they are unsure. Sole think

:16:08. > :16:14.it is time to find the new candidate, many do not. Thex are

:16:15. > :16:20.perfectly entitled to their opinion, people do not forgdt

:16:21. > :16:27.overnight somebody who has dedicated themselves to public life for close

:16:28. > :16:32.on 22 years. But they have not forgotten the trial either. He was

:16:33. > :16:37.exonerated but politically ht has been damaging. For the last 11

:16:38. > :16:43.months that I have gone through nothing will ever be the sale again.

:16:44. > :16:47.His former constituency chahrman is understood to be one of those

:16:48. > :16:55.opposing Nigel Evans but wh`t about constituents? He does his job, that

:16:56. > :17:02.is all that matters, person`l life should not come into it. It is not

:17:03. > :17:09.good giving the local area ` bad name if he comes back. He h`s always

:17:10. > :17:13.done his job. I am not judghng him on his personal life, I think he

:17:14. > :17:22.should carry on because he has done so much for people locally. So, how

:17:23. > :17:27.deep is that support? Clearly there is a strong stand that feel he is

:17:28. > :17:34.damaged goods that he has friends who insist he has loads of support

:17:35. > :17:37.and will be fine. It is the decision to be made by the Conservathve

:17:38. > :17:45.association perhaps in August or September. He has survived `

:17:46. > :17:53.rebellion of this kind once before in the term he was starting out as

:17:54. > :18:00.an MP. I am sure we will find out at and when anything happens. Onto some

:18:01. > :18:03.sports news now. The Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has bden

:18:04. > :18:06.quoted in a French magazine as saying the club wouldn't give him

:18:07. > :18:10.time off to be with his brother Ibrahim, in the weeks beford his

:18:11. > :18:13.death. He told French Footb`ll he celebrated winning the Premher

:18:14. > :18:17.League title in Abu Dhabi while his brother was dying. Ibrahim Toure

:18:18. > :18:20.died last week. City are not commenting, although it's understood

:18:21. > :18:26.the club has always granted compassionate leave requests in the

:18:27. > :18:28.past. Now many of us have m`de a stupid mistake growing up. For

:18:29. > :18:31.tennis player Naomi Broady from Stockport, that mistake, posting a

:18:32. > :18:35.provocative photo online whdn she was just 17, cost her her ftnding.

:18:36. > :18:39.She's had to go it alone evdr since with her dad selling the falily home

:18:40. > :18:42.to finance her career. But last night the 26`year`old had the last

:18:43. > :18:48.laugh, winning her first match at a grand slam at Wimbledon. Shd's one

:18:49. > :18:52.of three rising North West tennis stars to gain a place in thd famous

:18:53. > :18:56.tournament on a wild card. Here s Abbie Jones. They're young.

:18:57. > :19:00.Determined. And reached Wimbledon on a wild card. Stockport's Naomi

:19:01. > :19:21.Broady has had to be more ddtermined than most. She is now through to the

:19:22. > :19:24.second round at Wimbledon. @ victory made even sweeter because she has

:19:25. > :19:27.financed her own career. Thd Lawn Tennis Association stripped her of

:19:28. > :19:32.her funding after she posted a provocative photo of herself on the

:19:33. > :19:35.internet aged just 17. It is embarrassing. We were not doing

:19:36. > :19:44.anything illegal, we were not doing drugs. They were just teenagers Her

:19:45. > :19:47.dad sold the family home in Stockport so she could keep playing.

:19:48. > :19:50.Naomi has trained here at The Northern Tennis Club in Didsbury in

:19:51. > :19:53.Manchester since she was little.Stockport's Samantha Murray

:19:54. > :19:56.knows a thing or to about b`ttling against the odds. She has bden

:19:57. > :19:59.working hard and so on sincd she was very young. When she comes tsually

:20:00. > :20:07.works her socks off in the gym and everything else. She is just

:20:08. > :20:15.fantastic. A year ago she w`s on the verge of hanging up her racket to

:20:16. > :20:19.become an error. Just trying every week, catching things when xou can

:20:20. > :20:35.do but it has been completely worth it. Samantha Murray knows about

:20:36. > :20:38.working hard as well. Seeded 24 th in the world, she faced the number

:20:39. > :20:41.five, Maria Sharipova, this afternoon in the biggest match of

:20:42. > :20:44.her career. She lost but takes home ?27,000, her biggest paycheck. Also

:20:45. > :20:47.playing today, Daniel Smethtrst from Manchester. He played an incredible

:20:48. > :20:51.51 matches this year to go from 400th to 250 in the world in just

:20:52. > :20:59.five months to get his Wimbledon wild card. All eyes now are on now

:21:00. > :21:14.me Brody and what is she pl`nning to spend her prize money on? A handbag!

:21:15. > :21:18.In cricket Lancashire need two more wickets for victory against

:21:19. > :21:26.Northants. The visitors are following on, 230`8. The result is

:21:27. > :21:39.only going one way if Lancashire can get those two extra wickets. Adina

:21:40. > :21:43.Thomas Johnston, much is expected of the young heptathlete. With less and

:21:44. > :21:52.a month to go until the Comlonwealth Games she is on a strict tr`ining

:21:53. > :21:57.regime. Our reporter went to meet her and talk about her goals and

:21:58. > :22:06.eating regime. This is wherd you first started to train? Yes, this is

:22:07. > :22:11.where I first read the high jump. Saw all the dreams you had from

:22:12. > :22:18.primary school, they are all starting to come true now? Xes, that

:22:19. > :22:25.is right. I have seen the young kids running around doing all thd things

:22:26. > :22:29.I used to do. Now I use the hill as a training tool. When you are a

:22:30. > :22:35.little kid everyone is so t`ll and you see those tall athletes going

:22:36. > :22:40.past, I guess now that is md. What sort of training regime havd you

:22:41. > :22:49.got? It is very different to the winter training. It is very much

:22:50. > :22:55.about the technical work. What about things you can and cannot do, our
