:00:09. > :00:10.Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with Roger Johnson

:00:11. > :00:16.A shale gas company changes its plans for a fracking site

:00:17. > :00:20.in Lancashire following concerns from nearby villages.

:00:21. > :00:27.They invaded our privacy in our darkest times `

:00:28. > :00:34.a victim of phone hacking s`ys he's delighted by the guilty verdicts.

:00:35. > :00:37.Should this youth have been jailed for the murder of Garry Newlove

:00:38. > :00:40.The case which inspired a new drama about an old law.

:00:41. > :00:42.Has he bitten off more than he can chew this time?

:00:43. > :00:53.Liverpool waits to hear the fate of Luis Suarez.

:00:54. > :00:59.After two centuries of brewhng, we see why this brewery is movhng to a

:01:00. > :01:13.new site. The fallout

:01:14. > :01:17.from yesterday's phone hackhng verdicts continue, but not `ll the

:01:18. > :01:19.victims were high profile c`ses Graham Foulkes, from Oldham,

:01:20. > :01:21.was targeted by hackers after his son David died

:01:22. > :01:25.in the 7/7 London bombings. David was visiting the capital

:01:26. > :01:27.for the first time. He was on the underground

:01:28. > :01:30.and was standing within a few feet of one of the bolbers

:01:31. > :01:34.when the device detonated. Graham came

:01:35. > :02:04.in to speak to me earlier and told I am delighted with the verdict

:02:05. > :02:13.Their dirty linen has been washed in the public and it sends a clear

:02:14. > :02:17.message to the newspapers to get their newspapers in order. Could you

:02:18. > :02:24.have imagined that you would have ever been a target of this? I don't

:02:25. > :02:28.know how anybody could think it was a good idea to invade the privacy of

:02:29. > :02:35.people who were in a really dark and difficult place. When the attack

:02:36. > :02:39.happened, it was a Thursday and we had no information from any

:02:40. > :02:48.authorities for a week. Durhng that week, the families made an dmotional

:02:49. > :02:52.phone calls and messages. To think they had been listening to those

:02:53. > :02:58.thinking it was a good idea so they could steal the lead on othdr

:02:59. > :03:04.newspapers, is just horrendous. I don't know how anybody would think

:03:05. > :03:09.that is a good thing to do. Your son, it was the first time he had

:03:10. > :03:14.been to London. Does this trial in any way bring any kind of end to

:03:15. > :03:17.this for you? Is a good thing to do. Your son, it was the first time he

:03:18. > :03:21.had been to London. Does thhs trial in anyway bring any kind of end to

:03:22. > :03:26.this for you? Not really. It adds to the whole thing.

:03:27. > :03:32.another weight that makes that darkness a little bit darker again.

:03:33. > :03:38.With regards to Andy Coulson and the others, what are your thoughts

:03:39. > :03:43.towards them? A big degree of animosity. It there hasn't been a

:03:44. > :03:45.President for sentence but H hope it is severe and I hope it includes

:03:46. > :03:50.custody. Thank you very much. A shale gas company has changed

:03:51. > :03:52.its plans for a fracking site in Lancashire after local rdsidents

:03:53. > :03:54.expressed their concerns. Cuadrilla has promised to lhmit

:03:55. > :03:57.the number of hours it oper`tes its fracking pumps,

:03:58. > :03:59.and agreed to other concesshons But anti`fracking campaigners are

:04:00. > :04:02.dismissing the changes as cosmetic. Our environment correspondent

:04:03. > :04:22.Judy Hobson joins us now We have heard a lot about the pros

:04:23. > :04:26.and cons of fracking. The shte is just behind me down this dirt black.

:04:27. > :04:31.The publication of this planning application is significant because

:04:32. > :04:35.it makes it feel closer than ever. It is for exploratory drillhng but

:04:36. > :04:41.it is for six years and it hs the most detailed look we have had so

:04:42. > :04:44.far on what it will like `` what it would be like to have this on your

:04:45. > :04:52.doorstep. This is where Cuadrilla plan to drill four Wells. After

:04:53. > :05:00.weeks consulting with residdnts big company modified its plans before

:05:01. > :05:05.submitting the plans. They sell it will reduce the volume of fracking

:05:06. > :05:12.liquid, reduce mains water by 2 % and limit the hours it use `` uses

:05:13. > :05:19.fracturing pumps. The height of the light flare stack that burddns of

:05:20. > :05:24.gas will be reduced. We havd had a period of consultation with

:05:25. > :05:29.stakeholders over four months and we have listened to what peopld have

:05:30. > :05:36.said. We have tried to take all of that on board and have made

:05:37. > :05:41.changes. There is no noise `t all. All we can hear is the birds. Many

:05:42. > :05:48.residents say the revised plans don't make a difference to how they

:05:49. > :05:53.feel. I am still horrified `bout the impact on our community and the

:05:54. > :05:55.industrialisation of our arda. We are still concerned about the Health

:05:56. > :06:00.and Safety Executive is, sthll concerned about the levels of noise,

:06:01. > :06:10.still concerned about what will happen to the toxic waste.

:06:11. > :06:17.Others like Bill who has lived here for 23 years said would it change

:06:18. > :06:28.the feel of the village. Not happy about the concessions. Concdssions

:06:29. > :06:36.from what? Many say they will now object to this planning application.

:06:37. > :06:42.One test group has called the changes that Cuadrilla have made as

:06:43. > :06:47.cosmetic. They say this will have a huge impact on people who lhve in

:06:48. > :06:51.the area. Some residents Talarod say they are glad they will not be

:06:52. > :06:58.fracking overnight because protest groups are always going to say no

:06:59. > :07:05.changes will be enough. `` some residents down the road say.

:07:06. > :07:10.An investigation's been launched after a 90`year`old woman w`s

:07:11. > :07:14.The victim was targeted as she walked along Spotland Road

:07:15. > :07:17.in Rochdale just before 7am yesterday morning.

:07:18. > :07:20.The woman is being supported by specially trained officers.

:07:21. > :07:30.Police are appealing for information.

:07:31. > :07:38.When you target the most vulnerable in our society, a 90`year`old woman

:07:39. > :07:41.with a walking stick, that has to be the worst of the worst. It hs vile

:07:42. > :07:43.and wicked. The Prime Minister says

:07:44. > :07:46.his heart goes out to the f`mily of a Lancashire teenager who

:07:47. > :07:48.drowned this weekend after getting James Goodship, who was 17,

:07:49. > :07:53.was one of seven people who got onto a floating jetty at Burwain Sailing

:07:54. > :07:56.Club in Foulridge on Sunday. David Cameron was responding to

:07:57. > :07:59.Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson My heart goes out to

:08:00. > :08:06.the family that he mentioned and it is tragic for anyone to losd a son

:08:07. > :08:10.and to lose one in such a tragic way We need to spread better information

:08:11. > :08:18.about the dangers of swimming We need to do more to teach swimming

:08:19. > :08:28.in schools and life`saving skills. The mother of a youth convicted

:08:29. > :08:31.of murdering Warrington father of three Garry Newlove, says she's

:08:32. > :08:34.determined to prove his innocence. Jordon Cunliffe has always claimed

:08:35. > :08:36.he didn't touch Mr Newlove who was beaten to death by a gang

:08:37. > :08:39.of youths outside his home. But he was convicted under

:08:40. > :08:42.the law of joint enterprise ` His mother Janet says

:08:43. > :08:44.that was unjust. And her son's case was the

:08:45. > :08:48.inspiration for a new BBC TV drama. We'll be speaking to Janet Cunliffe

:08:49. > :08:50.in a moment. First here's our Chief Reporter

:08:51. > :08:53.Dave Guest, to explain more The law of Joint Enterprise, also

:08:54. > :09:02.known as Common Purpose, isn't new. But in recent times it's cole

:09:03. > :09:07.into vogue as a way of tackling Basically you don't need to have

:09:08. > :09:12.struck the fatal blow to face a murder charge, you just havd to have

:09:13. > :09:16.been there lending encouragdment or My view on the pitfalls are

:09:17. > :09:27.if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time and your participation

:09:28. > :09:30.is limited, then you could be So the law of joint enterprhse means

:09:31. > :09:39.someone can be prosecuted for murder if they foresaw that

:09:40. > :09:42.another member of the group might That's why Jordan Cunliffe hs

:09:43. > :09:48.behind bars. He and two others ` Adam Swdllings

:09:49. > :09:51.and Stephen Sorton were convicted Mr Newlove was beaten to de`th

:09:52. > :09:58.by a gang of youths outside Cunliffe claimed he played no part

:09:59. > :10:04.in actually assaulting Mr Ndwlove, He's tried unsuccessfully to

:10:05. > :10:09.appeal against his conviction. His case was partly the inspiration

:10:10. > :10:13.for the writer of a new BBC Drama Common tells the story

:10:14. > :10:22.of a young man caught up in events If you were there,

:10:23. > :10:41.you will get done for murder. The writer, Jimmy McGovern,

:10:42. > :10:43.believes there are many such people unjustly imprisoned because

:10:44. > :10:45.of joint enterprise. Mr Newlove's widow is now B`roness

:10:46. > :10:52.Newlove, the Victims Commissioner. But previously other family members

:10:53. > :11:14.have dismissed claims of There is one factor that he didn't

:11:15. > :11:21.mention her and key to why xou think the conviction is wrong. Jordan is

:11:22. > :11:31.supposed to have stood and watched and done nothing to help thd

:11:32. > :11:40.victim. In the VAT, the part of joint enterprise, many people get

:11:41. > :11:43.convicted. My son was actually blind so he wouldn't have been able to

:11:44. > :11:49.encourage a fight or an argtment that he couldn't see. He wotldn t

:11:50. > :11:54.have been able to get involved in an incident that he wouldn't h`ve been

:11:55. > :12:02.able to see it happening in front of his eyes. He has a generic `` he has

:12:03. > :12:07.a degenerative condition. Hd has. Why didn't that come out in court?

:12:08. > :12:15.It didn't come out to the ftll extent. A lot of the trial was

:12:16. > :12:19.rushed because at the time ht was about proving we had a brokdn

:12:20. > :12:24.Britain and to get the trial into the court as quickly as possible and

:12:25. > :12:29.get the conviction as quickly as possible. The witness evidence by

:12:30. > :12:35.the trauma trust was only ghven in written evidence. It was medically

:12:36. > :12:39.quite technical to understand. Jordan's condition is a str`nge

:12:40. > :12:43.condition. He can't wear gl`sses or contact lenses so the jury wouldn't

:12:44. > :12:49.have understood exactly what the condition was and the impact it

:12:50. > :12:55.would have had on him. Some people will say he is now hiding bdhind

:12:56. > :13:01.that conviction `` condition. How bad is it? He was scheduled for

:13:02. > :13:06.transplant surgery on both of his eyes prior to the incident `nd two

:13:07. > :13:10.weeks after he was convicted, he was actually given transplant strgery to

:13:11. > :13:16.one of his eyes. No surgeon would do that to someone if there wasn't

:13:17. > :13:21.anything wrong with their vhsion. What do you say to the family who

:13:22. > :13:28.say, he should serve his sentence and accept what he did? Thex need to

:13:29. > :13:33.understand that I am not a whingeing mother trying to get her son home.

:13:34. > :13:38.It has crippled our family. Jordan is completely innocent and hf they

:13:39. > :13:42.don't know my son was blind and they went through the court procdss and

:13:43. > :13:45.still don't know he is blind, I am convinced that neither did the jury.

:13:46. > :13:51.Thank you for talking to us. 70 % of homes up for sale

:13:52. > :13:54.in the North West are unaffordable for first time buyers,

:13:55. > :13:56.according to a report It compared house prices

:13:57. > :13:59.with mortgages available. The report suggests the problem is

:14:00. > :14:01.particularly acute in Trafford, But the Government says its Help To

:14:02. > :14:09.Buy Scheme is making a diffdrence. This is

:14:10. > :14:11.about targeting a specific group They are hard`working peopld who

:14:12. > :14:16.wanted to get on the housing ladder but the deposit

:14:17. > :14:19.was too big and they now nded to secure a 5% deposits which will now

:14:20. > :14:31.allow them to get a decent start. A Twitter post from the Isld of Man

:14:32. > :14:33.government, telling off the Prime Minister, has led to calls

:14:34. > :14:37.for David Cameron to get his facts rights after a tweet which hncluded

:14:38. > :14:40.the Isle of Man as part of the UK. Number 10 tweeted

:14:41. > :14:42.a map containing the mistakd. The Manx government replied

:14:43. > :14:48.asking for it to be correctdd. Liverpool fans chew over thd fate

:14:49. > :15:06.of serial biter Luis Suarez. A tap on the wrist and don't do it

:15:07. > :15:11.again. I would get rid. 200 years of tradition comes to an end as a

:15:12. > :15:17.famous Lancashire names `` famous Lancashire name leaves Blackburn.

:15:18. > :15:20.It was the very first mosqud in Britain and this week it'll

:15:21. > :15:25.But don't look for minarets and arches ` this mosque,

:15:26. > :15:28.opened by solicitor William Quilliam in the 1880s, is in a Victorian

:15:29. > :15:33.The mosque hasn't been used for worship for more a hundred xears.

:15:34. > :15:35.Now campaigners have restordd it to how it looked

:15:36. > :15:39.Here's our Merseyside Reporter, Andy Gill.

:15:40. > :15:42.The patterned carpet could be from a place where worshippdrs

:15:43. > :15:48.The geometric tiles typical of a mosque in Marakesh.

:15:49. > :15:54.And this is the man behind Britain's first ever mosque.

:15:55. > :15:57.William Quilliam converted to Islam after a trip to Morocco,

:15:58. > :16:14.It was the centre of Islamic activity in Victorian times, the

:16:15. > :16:21.birth of Islam in Britain, hf you like. It is extremely important to

:16:22. > :16:54.the Muslim community here and around the world. This building has always

:16:55. > :16:58.been a mask and even during the time when it was used to store documents

:16:59. > :17:13.from the Liverpool registry office. He often faced hostility for his

:17:14. > :17:19.faith. He showed how it was possible to be a Muslim in this country and

:17:20. > :17:22.yet to be concerned about events going on around the world and

:17:23. > :17:27.fighting for justice. He is a role model in that respect. The losque

:17:28. > :17:33.opens in time for Ramadan. Let's talk about sport now `nd

:17:34. > :17:43.Richard only one place to start Liverpool's Luis Suarez is

:17:44. > :17:45.in trouble again Yes, Liverpool fans will be

:17:46. > :17:54.wondering where this leaves It certainly looked as though the

:17:55. > :17:59.Uruguayan sunk his teeth into the shoulder of Giorgio Chiellini in

:18:00. > :18:04.their victory over Italy last night. Now you'll be aware that he's been

:18:05. > :18:06.banned twice before Football's world governing body FIFA

:18:07. > :18:16.have opened disciplinary proceedings and if he's found guilty

:18:17. > :18:19.the striker faces a possibld two year or 24 match ban that could

:18:20. > :18:21.include domestic football. You wouldn't expect Liverpool

:18:22. > :18:24.as a club to comment at this stage but it's clearly

:18:25. > :18:27.the last thing they need. Known as one of the most destructive

:18:28. > :18:30.strikers in world football, it is Luis Suarez's self`destruct button

:18:31. > :18:33.that is once again the centre of attention. He has played his final

:18:34. > :18:37.game in this World Cup but ht is the final straw for Liverpool f`ns? A

:18:38. > :19:02.tap on the wrist. Don't do ht again. Maybe after some psychological help

:19:03. > :19:11.or something like that, After the game, he looked

:19:12. > :19:15.like a man in turmoil and when It drove me crazy also but there's

:19:16. > :19:24.no need to make a story out of it. He did the same playing

:19:25. > :19:29.for Liverpool against Chelsda in 2013, this time

:19:30. > :19:31.a 10 game ban and yesterday appeared to bite an Italian player and is

:19:32. > :19:36.likely to face a longer suspension. A psychologist

:19:37. > :19:39.a year ago predicted he would react It is predictable

:19:40. > :19:45.when the pressure is high. In the Liverpool Chelsea gale, no

:19:46. > :19:51.disrespect to other Premier League clubs, at the end of the se`son

:19:52. > :19:54.that is when this thing emerges Liverpool worked with Suarez to curb

:19:55. > :19:56.his temper and last season he was outstanding

:19:57. > :20:00.and named Player of the Year Liverpool will not be making any

:20:01. > :20:06.comment at this stage but with speculation ready grown`up

:20:07. > :20:10.Barcelona and Real Madrid wdre trying to buy him, this latdst

:20:11. > :20:13.incident will add to the uncertainty A future that is likely to require

:20:14. > :20:34.some fundamental changes He has until nine o'clock tonight to

:20:35. > :20:39.make some representation and some documents have to be submitted. Some

:20:40. > :20:42.of your comments include ond from Andy who says it is a shockhng

:20:43. > :21:13.example to set for kids. A punter in Norway had a bet on him

:21:14. > :21:20.doing it at some point in the World Cup and has made some money out of

:21:21. > :21:23.it. Some interesting comments.

:21:24. > :21:26.Lancashire's cricketers havd recorded their best result

:21:27. > :21:28.of the season so far, crushing Northamptonshire

:21:29. > :21:29.in the County Championship at Emirates Old Trafford.

:21:30. > :21:32.Simon Kerrigan took the two wickets Lancashire needed

:21:33. > :21:35.for the victory and a maximum 24 points this morning.

:21:36. > :21:37.They won by an innings and 200 runs to complete

:21:38. > :21:48.their second win of the season and ease their fears of reldgation.

:21:49. > :22:06.Naomi Brodie is having to bd patient at Wimbledon. She is about to play.

:22:07. > :22:10.Samantha Murray lost yesterday to Maria Sharapova. Two player among

:22:22. > :22:23.town centre The company has decided to tp sticks

:22:24. > :22:33.and build a new brewery It says it'll be a big wrench `

:22:34. > :22:49.but the move is best for Thwaites has been proud of hts long

:22:50. > :22:55.tradition in the heart of Blackburn but time is up for its iconhc town

:22:56. > :23:01.centre Brewery, pulling out of its spiritual home will be a wrdnch We

:23:02. > :23:06.have been here for over 200 years so it has been a difficult dechsion but

:23:07. > :23:15.we know it is right to drivd our business forward. This is the man

:23:16. > :23:18.that started it all. Over the next two centuries, Thwaites bec`me a

:23:19. > :23:28.household name. Now they ard off the road to the outskirts of Bl`ckburn.

:23:29. > :23:38.It will allow us to build a smaller and more flexible brewery to brew

:23:39. > :23:41.more beers. Early morning at Thwaites brewery, the juggernauts

:23:42. > :23:47.are prepared for action. Thd shire horses have long been a central part

:23:48. > :23:51.of the business. Nowadays, they no longer deliver beer, their role is

:23:52. > :24:00.purely one show. Well they have a central role that the new shte? I

:24:01. > :24:06.hope so. I assume the peopld will want to go and see the horsds and

:24:07. > :24:10.then have a pint. Identifying the new site has ended fears th`t the

:24:11. > :24:14.company might pull out of L`ncashire completely. They insisted the move

:24:15. > :24:19.might `` will not lead to job cuts and they say they might employ more

:24:20. > :24:23.people and they hope to tap into the same water source so the taste of

:24:24. > :24:28.Thwaites beer will remain the same. They will keep a distribution centre

:24:29. > :24:37.in Blackburn but the new brdwery and headquarters should be up and

:24:38. > :24:49.running in two years. End of an era. You have a bit of a thirst on. The

:24:50. > :24:57.late news is on at 11:35pm. I will have to stay of the beer, that is

:24:58. > :25:04.the shore. Are you coming b`ck at that time? Great.

:25:05. > :25:12.The day hasn't been too bad today. Tomorrow, it is not a bad one and

:25:13. > :25:17.fairly fine. Make the most of it because after that, things start to

:25:18. > :25:24.change. We will see something in the way of rain. Changes are on the

:25:25. > :25:28.horizon but at the moment it is largely dry and fairly cloudy. We

:25:29. > :25:34.have had showers across the Isle of Man as we have gone through the

:25:35. > :25:39.afternoon. Our forecast wants to bring these showers into parts of

:25:40. > :25:44.Cumbria in the next couple of hours. Sometimes they are so light our
