:00:23. > :00:24.specialist care to patients with the most traumatic injuries.

:00:25. > :00:27.But some critics say it will cost too much

:00:28. > :00:30.and might eventually lead to existing hospitals having to close.

:00:31. > :00:36.2.8 million people will be `ffected and can have their say with the

:00:37. > :00:40.This is about care across 12 hospital sites

:00:41. > :00:45.and an annual budget of ?6 billion. This is what Healthier Together

:00:46. > :00:48.which is made up of doctors and clinicians, want to do.

:00:49. > :00:51.They want specialist hospit`ls in Salford, Oldham

:00:52. > :00:54.and central Manchester to ddal with the most serious incidents.

:00:55. > :00:57.And you could also choose two of these four hospitals dotted

:00:58. > :01:01.around Greater Manchester to become specialist casualty departmdnts

:01:02. > :01:05.North Manchester, Bury and Tameside will focus on carrying out

:01:06. > :01:07.planned procedures and general surgery.

:01:08. > :01:10.for Trafford General and Rochdale Infirmary.

:01:11. > :01:15.so is this about saving livds or saving money?

:01:16. > :01:21.And how do we make our hospitals fit for purpose?

:01:22. > :01:23.It's nonstop at the resuscitation emergency unit

:01:24. > :01:28.This is a department used to dealing with trauma.

:01:29. > :01:33.A typical Monday will mean ht is crammed full of patients.

:01:34. > :01:36.Dr Chris Brookes is a senior consultant in A

:01:37. > :01:38.and he is also behind plans to focus specialist care in hospitals

:01:39. > :01:44.The problem that we have currently is that resources are spread so

:01:45. > :01:52.Currently there are variations in our emergency surgery, for hnstance,

:01:53. > :01:58.If we took those variations out of the system, we would savd 15 0

:01:59. > :02:05.Improving care and taking pressure off A is a major issue

:02:06. > :02:11.But what's the future for our general hospitals?

:02:12. > :02:14.The local General Hospital, in our view, is the jewel in the crown

:02:15. > :02:16.It's where you should get most of your care.

:02:17. > :02:21.We think we can improve, by all of our hospitals working

:02:22. > :02:23.together and making the best use of their expertise and the skills

:02:24. > :02:28.Some hospital trusts feel Hdalthier Together is causing division.

:02:29. > :02:35.80,000 people a year use A services at Wythenshawe Hospital

:02:36. > :02:38.but, along with Stepping Hill, Bolton and Wigan,

:02:39. > :02:42.its fate as a specialist centre is in the hands of the public.

:02:43. > :02:45.We are concerned that the process perhaps wasn't satisfactory

:02:46. > :02:47.because we feel we already `re a specialist centre because of

:02:48. > :02:53.We're obviously a major cardiac centre, thoracic centre and,

:02:54. > :02:57.importantly, we do trauma and orthopaedic surgery as well

:02:58. > :03:00.GP services, pharmacies and caring for pdople

:03:01. > :03:07.Critics feel it is ill`concdived and due to an acute lack of funding

:03:08. > :03:16.Five years ago, we had 12 A across Greater Manchester.

:03:17. > :03:20.If Healthier Together gets hts way, we'll have five fully functhoning

:03:21. > :03:23.A and I just think that's a crying shame.

:03:24. > :03:27.The consultation will last for 12 weeks.

:03:28. > :03:31.It's down to the public to decide whether this is the best trdatment

:03:32. > :03:41.A man who claims he was abused while a pupil at Rochdale's Knowl

:03:42. > :03:44.View School says he's disappointed he won't now be able to tell

:03:45. > :03:47.his story to the independent inquiry into claims of a cover`up.

:03:48. > :03:50.Peter Forbes was preparing to give information to the inqtiry

:03:51. > :03:54.But yesterday that inquiry was suspended at the request of the

:03:55. > :03:58.police because officers belheved a wider investigation was now needed.

:04:11. > :04:21.A 94`year`old man's died in a house fire in Warrington.

:04:31. > :04:36.Birkenhead factory worker John Singleton had to borrow golf clubs

:05:43. > :05:45.other players to earn one of just three spots in the Open

:05:46. > :05:49.So many emotions I was going through.

:05:50. > :05:53.I was thinking about my dad and my mum and my fiancee as well,

:05:54. > :05:56.who's obviously put up with quite a lot with me going to work and

:05:57. > :06:01.This is the prize for winning the Open Championship and whoever

:06:02. > :06:04.picks this up in a few weeks' time will also pick up ?1 million.

:06:05. > :06:17.The fact he only qualified on Tuesday and now he's herd.

:06:18. > :06:19.And, for John, the whole Open experience should be
