:01:01. > :01:02.Greater Manchester Police to be suspended ` while a criminal

:01:11. > :01:16.The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating

:01:17. > :01:18.Sir Peter Fahy ` and two other officers ` over allegations that

:01:19. > :01:29.Our Reporter Clare Fallon is at GMP headquarters now.

:01:30. > :01:37.Yesterday we had the Police and Crime Commissioner backing him. Is

:01:38. > :01:47.there a sense that pressure is starting to mount? The calls for him

:01:48. > :01:51.to have been suspended had been intensifying over the course of

:01:52. > :01:57.today. This second MP is saying he should not be staying in his post as

:01:58. > :02:03.he is being investigated. He told me earlier, you cannot have a man in

:02:04. > :02:09.charge of investigating crimes who is himself under investigation.

:02:10. > :02:15.There was a protest by a small but noisy group. They had grievances

:02:16. > :02:18.over a number of issues and are now calling for him to go. Enough is

:02:19. > :02:22.enough. Small in number,

:02:23. > :02:24.but noisy and angry. These people had concerns

:02:25. > :02:26.about Greater Manchester Police even before the Chief Constable was

:02:27. > :02:32.under investigation. And they're not

:02:33. > :02:34.the only ones who think Sir Peter Fahy should be suspended

:02:35. > :02:37.Today a second North West MP joined the calls for the chief constable to

:02:38. > :02:53.be temporarily replaced. His judgement is bound to be

:02:54. > :03:00.empowered, so whether he is guilty or not guilty, to be fair to him and

:03:01. > :03:05.the people of Manchester he should be suspended. That is the safest

:03:06. > :03:07.thing to do and I am shocked it did not happen immediately.

:03:08. > :03:08.Greater Manchester's Chief Police Officer is not

:03:09. > :03:12.Nationwide many senior officers have been investigated in recent years.

:03:13. > :03:20.Those at the top are being scrutinised like never before.

:03:21. > :03:29.There is a great deal of interest in the way forces operate and this

:03:30. > :03:33.exposes officers to a great deal of public scrutiny and makes it very

:03:34. > :03:39.easy to make allegations against them and when that happens they have

:03:40. > :03:41.to be investigated. We are demanding he steps down.

:03:42. > :03:43.The family of Anthony Grainger wants something done now though

:03:44. > :03:50.His supporters were among those protesting today.

:03:51. > :03:54.He is under criminal investigation, he should be suspended.

:03:55. > :03:56.For now though Sir Peter Fahy remains in charge allbeit under

:03:57. > :04:07.It is worth stressing that when we heard from the commission yesterday,

:04:08. > :04:12.he was standing by the chief constable. He said there is no legal

:04:13. > :04:19.reason for him to be suspended. My understanding is that he will not be

:04:20. > :04:25.giving any interviews about the investigation he is facing. We had a

:04:26. > :04:28.statement from him saying that it is right and proper that he is

:04:29. > :04:29.scrutinised. We've been hearing over

:04:30. > :04:31.the past few weeks about ambitious new proposals for high speed rail

:04:32. > :04:34.across the Pennines. And Northern cities revealed plans

:04:35. > :04:36.for massively improved rail links. But according to rail campaigners `

:04:37. > :04:38.the immediate prospects for rail passengers in

:04:39. > :04:40.the North are anything but bright. They say new franchise proposals

:04:41. > :04:43.from the Department of Transport could see passengers paying more

:04:44. > :04:45.for less of a service. The Government has dismissed

:04:46. > :04:48.their claims as "nonsense". Our Transport Correspondent Judy

:04:49. > :05:02.Hobson reports. How well the network is creaking.

:05:03. > :05:09.David Cameron recently said he would transform it. To link up our cities

:05:10. > :05:13.would help to create a real economic powerhouse. Somerville groups say

:05:14. > :05:17.the current proposals will not work. If they go ahead unchanged it would

:05:18. > :05:23.be a disaster for the travelling public. They will have owed trains

:05:24. > :05:29.which would not be in the network and they will be paying more for

:05:30. > :05:33.those trains. The rail network is being upgraded to allow up to 700

:05:34. > :05:37.more trains every day and to in electrification. To pay the

:05:38. > :05:41.government says a network has to more efficient. Trains only stop

:05:42. > :05:48.here on Friday mornings and would it make sense to close

:05:49. > :05:55.stations like this questions like these which are

:05:56. > :06:01.currently The franchises but the two main

:06:02. > :06:07.local networks are up for Proposals include increasing powers

:06:08. > :06:14.which the government says services such as fewer train stops

:06:15. > :06:20.and But the plans also look at an

:06:21. > :06:24.increase in including those between Manchester

:06:25. > :06:28.and Sheffield. On Friday representing rail workers protested

:06:29. > :06:35.against the proposals including claimed that would put passenger

:06:36. > :06:39.safety at risk. In a strongly worded document, the Department

:06:40. > :06:42.Transport code that is a nonsense. They said they would never destroy

:06:43. > :06:47.services. They say improvements but our passengers

:06:48. > :06:56.happy to pay for shorter journeys. A premier service

:06:57. > :06:59.by Premier price. If the service was better then yes. The results will be

:07:00. > :07:08.announced in the Zambia. `` announced in December. The

:07:09. > :07:15.franchises changed hands in the two franchises changed hands in

:07:16. > :07:23.Northern Rail is an expensive franchise. What the government is

:07:24. > :07:29.doing is saying we cannot necessarily afford at this any more.

:07:30. > :07:33.The rest of the money is taxpayer support. In terms of what they do to

:07:34. > :07:38.close that gap, cutting closing stations is never going to

:07:39. > :07:45.be popular. I do not services is likely. It was decided

:07:46. > :07:52.not to be clever but there are some stations that see very

:07:53. > :07:57.every year yet they must be maintained and looked after. That is

:07:58. > :08:03.general question of whether we should ask people who

:08:04. > :08:08.to pay more or ask at the taxpayers to continue to

:08:09. > :08:11.railways? Paying more is what is involved here. You are not allowed

:08:12. > :08:13.to use off`peak tickets at peak times. It is coming. In a lot of

:08:14. > :08:21.countries already you cannot use an off`peak ticket in the morning of

:08:22. > :08:26.the evening. Here the off`peak ticket lets you

:08:27. > :08:31.evening and that is going to be removed.

:08:32. > :08:35.lot of the country already. This squeeze.

:08:36. > :08:40.government is trying to do to get more

:08:41. > :08:47.improve connectivity in the North? We would not need as much. `` onto

:08:48. > :08:53.the rails. There is a consultation going on. You have got until Monday

:08:54. > :09:01.night to put your views. Does consultation make a difference? If a

:09:02. > :09:04.lot of people say things yes it does. We could talk about it all

:09:05. > :09:05.evening. Thank you very much. The body of a 41`year`old father

:09:06. > :09:06.of three from Blackpool who went missing four years ago has

:09:07. > :09:08.been found. Chay Lancaster disappeared

:09:09. > :09:10.in September 2010 and it's believed he had an accident

:09:11. > :09:13.while walking in the Lake District. Lancashire Police says there are

:09:14. > :09:19.no suspicious circumstances. And some good news on the job front

:09:20. > :09:23.` he number of people out of work in the North west fell by 23,000 in

:09:24. > :09:27.the last quarter according to new figures from the Office for National

:09:28. > :09:37.Statistics. There are now 243,000 A man from Rochdale, who admitted

:09:38. > :09:40.stabbing his mother to death just days after moving back in with her `

:09:41. > :09:43.has been given a hospital order. Glennis Brierley was found dead

:09:44. > :09:44.at her home The court heard her son, Matthew,

:09:45. > :09:48.had delusions she was part He pleaded guilty to manslaughter at

:09:49. > :09:52.Manchester Crown Court yesterday. Manchester United Football Club is

:09:53. > :09:54.banning fans from bringing laptops and tablets to matches at Old

:09:55. > :09:57.Trafford, from this season. On their website, the club says they

:09:58. > :10:00.are reacting to the latest security intelligence and the move is in line

:10:01. > :10:03.with UK airports. They say the restrictions are to ensure the

:10:04. > :10:06.safety and security of all spectators and apologise for any

:10:07. > :10:13.inconvenience this may cause fans. When Mike Howsley from Lancashire

:10:14. > :10:16.died suddenly at the beginning of the year, his grieving family

:10:17. > :10:20.had him buried at the local church. They spent more than ?2,000

:10:21. > :10:24.on his headstone. So imagine their shock when

:10:25. > :10:27.the parish priest told them they had to remove it because it included

:10:28. > :10:30.the inscription "Sleep Tight Dad.", Andy Gill went to see

:10:31. > :10:33.them this morning. But then,

:10:34. > :10:38.events took an unexpected turn. At home this afternoon,

:10:39. > :10:40.Janet remembers her partner. Mike collapsed and died suddenly

:10:41. > :10:43.in January. The gravestone Janet

:10:44. > :10:50.and her daughter Sophie had made was in the churchyard but is now back

:10:51. > :10:52.at the stonemason. Janet says her parish priest told

:10:53. > :10:55.her the kisses made it too personal and

:10:56. > :11:00.the inscription was inappropriate as people in a graveyard are not

:11:01. > :11:05.sleeping, they are dead. We're still trying to get over the

:11:06. > :11:08.fact that Mike died only in January. Personally it has made

:11:09. > :11:10.me feel really ill. I did start going back to

:11:11. > :11:13.church actually when Mike died. I was getting great comfort

:11:14. > :11:15.in going into the church. I went to

:11:16. > :11:17.the churchyard nearly every day. We contacted the catholic abbey

:11:18. > :11:27.in North Yorkshire which runs This afternoon the parish priest put

:11:28. > :11:40.out a statement saying the church was sorry for any

:11:41. > :11:43.miscommunication and it would work with the family to put up a plaque

:11:44. > :11:46.which would complement what they We asked a spokesman if this meant

:11:47. > :12:02.that the priest had changed his mind ` the family could now

:12:03. > :12:04.have the gravestone as they wanted, We went back to Janet to break

:12:05. > :12:08.the good news. We have just had an e`mail

:12:09. > :12:11.from the church saying that you can It'll make me start crying

:12:12. > :12:25.on camera, I cannot believe it, Now, last week we heard

:12:26. > :12:37.from the North West's Muslim community who've been campaigning

:12:38. > :12:39.and fundraising and for people Today, we've heard from the region's

:12:40. > :12:44.Jewish community where there are concerns over a significant rise

:12:45. > :13:00.in the number of anti`Jewish crime. If it is a war happening thousands

:13:01. > :13:07.of miles away. But the repercussions are being felt much closer to home.

:13:08. > :13:10.Tensions have been rising, with regular protests held by both

:13:11. > :13:19.pro`Palestinian and pro`Israeli groups. We had a phone call from the

:13:20. > :13:27.police. Members of Manchester's large and established Jewish

:13:28. > :13:35.community say they are feeling the pressure. A woman was accosted

:13:36. > :13:40.yesterday and Nazi kind of remarks were made to our. Rabbis have been

:13:41. > :13:45.targeted on their way to the synagogue. There are real things

:13:46. > :13:49.happening out there that have very unpleasant. Images of what reflect

:13:50. > :13:55.the devastation and consequences. Some blame the media coverage for

:13:56. > :14:02.what is happening here. It shows up on the side of the story and not the

:14:03. > :14:07.other. The result of that is that well`meaning, good people in this

:14:08. > :14:11.country become angry at Israel. Latest of a show that the Israeli

:14:12. > :14:20.community are justified in their concerns. Last year 78 incidents

:14:21. > :14:25.were recorded in the same period. This year that figure was up to a

:14:26. > :14:28.100. Those working for cohesion between communities condemn

:14:29. > :14:35.abuse. What is needed is a certain level of community. If you throw a

:14:36. > :14:44.brick through a synagogue and how does that help a single Palestinian?

:14:45. > :14:49.And Turf at the top ` how promotion winners Burnley are planning to stay

:14:50. > :14:52.And, meet the brightest bus in town ` all

:14:53. > :14:56.Exactly 50 years ago today two men in two different prisons

:14:57. > :14:58.in the north`west stood on the scaffold, waiting to be

:14:59. > :15:06.Gwynne Evans and Peter Allen were both being led

:15:07. > :15:09.to the gallows for the murder of a van driver in his home in Cumbria.

:15:10. > :15:11.They were the last to be hanged in Britain.

:15:12. > :15:20.As the clock struck 8, a handful of protestors gathered

:15:21. > :15:29.Within 20 seconds Peter Allen was dead ` his partner in crime

:15:30. > :15:32.What no one knew that morning ` they would be

:15:33. > :15:45.This is where the two men ended up living Clarendon Street in Preston.

:15:46. > :15:47.And it's thought they only went to steal some money

:15:48. > :15:54.This 50`year`old van driver John West was their target.

:15:55. > :15:59.Killed at his home in Cumbria simply for his bank book.

:16:00. > :16:07.I think it was the brutality of the murder which is the reason why the

:16:08. > :16:15.Home Secretary didn't sanction a reprieve. They stabbed him 15 times

:16:16. > :16:17.in the head. His false teeth actually flew out and flew across

:16:18. > :16:26.The men were put to trial here at Manchester Crown Court.

:16:27. > :16:29.Today historian Ed Glinnert is taking these locals on a tour

:16:30. > :16:36.of Manchester telling the tale of what unfolded.

:16:37. > :16:39.The authorities didn't want either man to become a martyr but what was

:16:40. > :16:41.interesting about this story was about Strangeways waited 10 minutes

:16:42. > :16:44.to have the dubious honour of saying we had the last hanging.

:16:45. > :16:47.The death penalty was suspended in Britain.

:16:48. > :16:52.And Parliament finally abolished it in 1969.

:17:24. > :17:24.has become the latest player to agree a new long`term contract

:17:25. > :17:32.He's extended his stay for another five years.

:17:33. > :17:35.It's not as positive, though, for the red half

:17:36. > :17:38.of Manchester with some injury news that broke late this afternoon.

:17:39. > :17:39.Full back Luke Shaw has been ruled out of action because

:17:40. > :17:43.The 19`year`old, a ?27 million signing from Southampton,

:17:55. > :17:55.Burnley have to wait until the following evening

:17:56. > :17:59.for their highly`anticipated return to top`flight action.

:18:00. > :18:02.And what an opening fixture it is for the clarets.

:18:03. > :18:05.They take on Jose Mourinho's Chelsea at Turf Moor and for everyone

:18:06. > :18:09.at the club the big kick`off can't come soon enough.

:18:10. > :18:13.The smallest town to have a Premier League team threw one heck

:18:14. > :18:19.Ever since then fans have been waiting for the big kick`off.

:18:20. > :18:21.I don't see why we can't do this year.

:18:22. > :18:26.There is going to be another rollercoaster ride I think.

:18:27. > :18:29.It certainly was the last time Burnley mixed it with the big boys.

:18:30. > :18:38.There were unforgettable moments like this.

:18:39. > :18:41.Robbie Blake's goal, enough to beat Manchester United.

:18:42. > :18:44.In the end of the clarets were relegated.

:18:45. > :18:48.How confident then is the current team of upsetting the odds?

:18:49. > :18:51.Obviously a little of nerves like you would expect but as soon

:18:52. > :18:56.as the whistle blows everything will come into our mind.

:18:57. > :18:59.I will try to do my best in show people what I am all about.

:19:00. > :19:01.I believe that we've got enough within the dressing room

:19:02. > :19:05.I am sure the manager will try to add a couple

:19:06. > :19:08.more to have a competitive season and keep ourselves in the league.

:19:09. > :19:12.It is not just on the pitch where Burnley are having to up their game.

:19:13. > :19:15.To bring the ground up to Premier League standards they have had to

:19:16. > :19:18.put in more camera positions, widen the tv gantry and the press box.

:19:19. > :19:21.They have also moved to the tunnel and revamped the dug0out as well.

:19:22. > :19:24.?4 million has been set aside for those improvements.

:19:25. > :19:26.A slice of more than 100 million that comes

:19:27. > :19:37.Even so, trying to sign top quality players is tough.

:19:38. > :19:41.For Burnley's world we have bought in a tremendous amount of finance we

:19:42. > :19:46.have used widely on and off the pitch but for the bigger picture

:19:47. > :19:49.of the Premier League we cannot spend as much on wages and fees.

:19:50. > :19:54.And with half a dozen new faces already, coupled with their

:19:55. > :19:57.trademark team spirit, Burnley feel the prize of staying in the Premier

:19:58. > :20:14.Finally from me, Liverpool may already have American

:20:15. > :20:16.owners but there's someone else Stateside who apparently has an

:20:21. > :20:22.of the Anfield club and on the back of the World Cup would

:20:23. > :20:40.11 years ago today Mike Newman became

:20:41. > :20:47.He set a new land speed record of 144 miles per hour.

:20:48. > :20:49.Well today Mike, from Sale in Greater Manchester,

:20:50. > :20:52.was back at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire ` with the aim

:20:53. > :21:08.If Mike has a four speed. A blind from birth, and he could not fill

:21:09. > :21:16.his dream of being a so he went for the next best thing

:21:17. > :21:22.both an ``. He entered the Guinness book of records. Today he has a new

:21:23. > :21:27.ambition. To smash through the 200 mph barrier. Sense of anticipation.

:21:28. > :21:33.He drives with the help of a navigator who just helps to be his

:21:34. > :21:37.father. I am in a vehicle behind him and we are connected with a radio

:21:38. > :21:45.link and I can tell him straight and tell him where to

:21:46. > :21:53.start. 200 mph barrier. Can he do it? He is

:21:54. > :22:02.finally got It is just a few minutes time before

:22:03. > :22:07.he sets. Let us find out. After the exhilaration and excitement, it is

:22:08. > :22:13.time for the horrible part. Waiting to see if he has done it. Then the

:22:14. > :22:26.results came in. Mike had averaged 200.9 mph. I am feeling absolutely

:22:27. > :22:28.ecstatic. It has not sunk in really. I have been chasing this dream for

:22:29. > :22:38.11 years. It was on this Day 11 years ago I got this first car. It

:22:39. > :22:43.is a great anniversary present. Not bad for a former bank manager. With

:22:44. > :22:49.his determination there is little doubt he will make history once

:22:50. > :22:53.again. Well done to Mike. Another mode of transport now but not quite

:22:54. > :22:56.as quick. As bus journeys go `

:22:57. > :22:58.it's been a long one. From Karachi in Pakistan,

:22:59. > :23:02.to Accrington in Lancashire. It's been brought over

:23:03. > :23:04.by two brothers who are planning But why bring a bus all the way

:23:05. > :23:08.from Pakistan? Safe to say it's not

:23:09. > :23:23.your normal Lancashire bus Elaine. It is certainly not. A kaleidoscope
