:00:11. > :00:17.The judge described the case as "a disaster waiting to happen".

:00:27. > :00:32.Manchester City Council say 20mph's plenty for thousands of roads

:00:33. > :00:38.But will it really slow down the speeders?

:00:39. > :00:41.And the pound`a`night poultry palace gets off to a flying start

:00:42. > :00:57.It was, said a judge in Liverpool today,

:00:58. > :01:02.In January, Clancy Durkin, an alcoholic,

:01:03. > :01:06.was killed by her own daughter after years of mental cruelty.

:01:07. > :01:09.Rebecca Durkin, who's nineteen, was today jailed for manslaughter.

:01:10. > :01:12.The judge, at Liverpool Crown Court, told her she'd have to live with

:01:13. > :01:14.what she'd done for the rest of her life.

:01:15. > :01:19.Belittled and undervalued by her own mother,

:01:20. > :01:26.She was 19, a student and part time care worker.

:01:27. > :01:29.Her mother, Clancy Durkin, was 56, a cleaner at Southport and

:01:30. > :01:34.Many of her relatives and friends didn't realise it,

:01:35. > :01:39.In January, at their home in Southport, her daughter suffocated

:01:40. > :01:44.Rebecca Durkin claimed she hadn't meant to kill her.

:01:45. > :02:09.We only have her side of the story. The sister described Clancy as a

:02:10. > :02:12.caring mother and she had issues but we only have the spin that Rebecca

:02:13. > :02:14.has put Durkin was tried for murder at

:02:15. > :02:16.Liverpool Crown Court and acquitted. But she pleaded guilty to

:02:17. > :02:27.manslaughter The judge described it as a

:02:28. > :02:33.difficult home environment. They had done their best for each other, he

:02:34. > :02:37.said, but Rebecca suffered long`term mental cruelty at her mother?s

:02:38. > :02:40.hands. The alcohol addiction clouded her judgement. He rejected

:02:41. > :02:45.Rebecca?s claimed she had not intended to kill her mother. You had

:02:46. > :02:50.had enough, he told her, something you must live with for the

:02:51. > :02:53.rest of your sentenced to four years

:02:54. > :02:54.and eight months in prison. After being held in custody

:02:55. > :02:55.since January, she'll actually serve 'Your family life may have been

:02:56. > :02:58.a very sad and very difficult one,' "But that family is now totally

:02:59. > :03:01.destroyed and split The Government's being accused

:03:02. > :03:10.of using cheap labour by paying prison inmates to do jobs

:03:11. > :03:14.in the private and public sector. Prisoners from HMP Liverpool are

:03:15. > :03:17.used on a number of contracts but are often being paid far less

:03:18. > :03:25.than the minimum wage. Critics say the scheme undercuts

:03:26. > :03:27.local businesses and threatens jobs. Its supporters say it reduces

:03:28. > :03:31.re`offending by getting inmates Behind its walls,

:03:32. > :03:38.HMP Liverpool is home to more than Some are in gainful employment `

:03:39. > :03:43.in laundries and in packing jobs It's run by the Ministry of Justice

:03:44. > :03:53.and its work has attracted praise But it's less popular with

:03:54. > :04:08.Walton's MP. It will be difficult for any company

:04:09. > :04:13.to compete with on a level playing field with prisoners paid far less

:04:14. > :04:21.than people on the national minimum wage. In a statement, the ministry

:04:22. > :04:33.told us... ISS, who're the laundry contractors

:04:34. > :04:36.for Walton Centre Foundation Trust in Liverpool, had planned to use

:04:37. > :05:07.inmates provided by One3One. Somehow the residual money is

:05:08. > :05:14.propping up what needs to be done in the prison service. It is wrong. The

:05:15. > :05:21.Prison Service tells us they want to stop the same faces coming back to

:05:22. > :05:22.prison time and time again. They disagree on how it is done.

:05:23. > :05:23.A man from Oldham's appeared before magistrates,

:05:24. > :05:25.accused of punching a heavily pregnant teenager in the stomach

:05:26. > :05:30.The 16 year old girl ` who was seven months pregnant `

:05:31. > :05:34.was attacked in Copster Park in the town last Thursday.

:05:35. > :05:37.18`year`old Dusan Bako ` who's charged with child destruction

:05:38. > :05:44.It's been reported that a Liverpool takeaway owner is among a group

:05:45. > :05:46.of British`based Kurds who've returned to Iraq, to fight

:05:47. > :05:52.Mohammed Abudullah told Sky News that even though he has a British

:05:53. > :05:54.passport and a good life in Liverpool,

:05:55. > :05:57.he wanted to return to Kurdistan to fight for his people against

:05:58. > :06:12.I have got a British passport and everything and the good life. I do

:06:13. > :06:18.not need anything but I am here support the Kurdistan people for my

:06:19. > :06:21.family, my dad, I do not care if I get killed or not.

:06:22. > :06:22.The West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper says some patients have been facing

:06:23. > :06:25.a wait of up to two hours for an ambulance.

:06:26. > :06:28.She claims one of her constituents died less than 48 hours after being

:06:29. > :06:31.The North West Ambulance Service says demand has risen by 7%

:06:32. > :06:38.An investigation's underway after a bin bag containing

:06:39. > :06:41.the severed heads of a number of cats was found on a street

:06:42. > :06:46.The discovery was made by a council worker who'd been sent to

:06:47. > :06:54.Road safety campaigners have for some time been repeating

:06:55. > :06:57.the mantra that "twenty's plenty" on suburban streets.

:06:58. > :06:59.And growing numbers of councils across the region are

:07:00. > :07:05.Today Manchester City Council introduced 20 mile per hour zones

:07:06. > :07:11.The authority hopes it'll cut accident rates ` but will it?

:07:12. > :07:20.Our Chief Reporter, Dave Guest, has been investigating and joins us now.

:07:21. > :07:32.Yes, they have not roll this out to every street in Manchester but I am

:07:33. > :07:37.not losing it. This is every street. It is one of the streets

:07:38. > :07:41.where the council hopes by lowering the speed limit they will lower the

:07:42. > :07:45.number of accidents. Not everyone is convinced that painting numbers on

:07:46. > :07:46.the road will reduce accidents. This is Woodland Road in Gorton `

:07:47. > :07:48.one of hundreds across Manchester Some within this community have

:07:49. > :08:06.welcomed the new speed limit. We have 40 children playing in this

:08:07. > :08:08.area alone. And we just think that we need this to protect our

:08:09. > :08:09.children. From today, more than

:08:10. > :08:11.a thousand streets in Manchester are Twenty's been plenty in parts

:08:12. > :08:17.of Blackpool for some years now. This is Highfield Road where the

:08:18. > :08:34.limit was introduced back on 2009. Do you stick to 20? I try to. It

:08:35. > :08:36.slows us down quite a bit but in built`up areas you need it for

:08:37. > :08:58.safety of people. Not everyone is convinced about the worth of the

:08:59. > :09:05.signs. Too many councils are putting up signs come if the road looks like

:09:06. > :09:10.30 and the character doesn't change, the behaviour won't change. You have

:09:11. > :09:16.to change the character of the road and that involves more than putting

:09:17. > :09:22.up signs. If road users do not respect the signs, what happens? We

:09:23. > :09:27.will monitor the situation and look at enforcement action. So people can

:09:28. > :09:33.be fined? Absolutely. The council hopes to designate more zones in the

:09:34. > :09:39.near future. The council are looking to the police to enforce these areas

:09:40. > :09:45.and recent guidance from ACPO says they have referred to speed

:09:46. > :09:52.awareness courses if people are caught breaking the limit. They also

:09:53. > :09:56.say it isn't just about science, it is changing the environment and

:09:57. > :09:58.making sure the mindset changes as well.

:09:59. > :10:01.This is a subject which has prompted quite a response from you today `

:10:02. > :10:05.Alan Swan e`mailed to say they're already in Blackpool

:10:06. > :10:10.and are ignored by everyone ` including public transport.

:10:11. > :10:16.Alan reckons crawling in second gear creates road anger.

:10:17. > :10:19.Ian Wallbank lives on a road in a 20 zone.

:10:20. > :10:21.He says he's been overtaken several times ` on one occasion someone went

:10:22. > :10:30.Proof, he says, that there are people with no regard for this law.

:10:31. > :10:33.On Twitter, Zulu 123 wrote ` the 20 mile`an`hour zones in Cleveleys cost

:10:34. > :10:38.250`thousand pounds ` drivers ignore it or deliberately go faster.

:10:39. > :10:41.It's a tick in the box for the Health and Safety brigade.

:10:42. > :10:44.Paul Emsley says on Facebook ` Nobody enforces them.

:10:45. > :10:47.The council say it's down to the police to enforce them ` and the

:10:48. > :10:53.While Lulu Anne Percival thinks it's a brilliant idea `

:10:54. > :11:04.but there will be some folks who don't think it applies to them!

:11:05. > :11:13.A weekend of anti`fracking protests culminated today in the protests

:11:14. > :11:20.around the area. Protesters occupied the building where one of the Shell

:11:21. > :11:26.gas companies have offices. But while they were condemning the ``

:11:27. > :11:31.for gas, opponents pointed out the protest camps cookers and gas

:11:32. > :11:37.heaters were gas powered! They are calling it today `` a day of direct

:11:38. > :11:42.action and to Blackpool the main target was this office, leased by

:11:43. > :11:46.Cuadrilla and focused much of the anger from the anti`fracking

:11:47. > :11:52.protesters. Inside the building, a determined group of campaigners who

:11:53. > :11:59.for several hours refused to leave. Among the group, Danny. We walked up

:12:00. > :12:08.to the office, we walked through the door, the door was open, pushed in

:12:09. > :12:13.and sat down, held hands, secured ourselves together and then shut the

:12:14. > :12:18.door. Eventually, the group left voluntarily. The Chamber of Commerce

:12:19. > :12:26.says the protesters were actually in its offices, not Cuadrilla. And

:12:27. > :12:30.there was more direct action by anti`fracking campaigners from the

:12:31. > :12:34.North West who travelled to London to superglued themselves to Defra,

:12:35. > :12:39.the department responsible for energy. When ministers insist

:12:40. > :12:45.fracking is safe and essential. Other critics of the protesters

:12:46. > :12:49.tweeted this, a picture showing gas canisters used to power their

:12:50. > :12:54.anti`fracking site in Blackpool. According to the organisers, the

:12:55. > :13:00.criticism is unfair. I am a human being living in a community, some

:13:01. > :13:05.people do choose to go into the hills and live entirely self

:13:06. > :13:10.sufficiently and that is an option but I want to be part of society.

:13:11. > :13:13.Having set up camp to highlight their cause, by the end of the

:13:14. > :13:18.week, most of have gone, the debate itself will

:13:19. > :13:20.continue. Last season's top two start the

:13:21. > :13:24.season with Premier League wins. And, the Lancashire teenager who

:13:25. > :13:27.hatched a plan for a hen hotel ` Last week on BBC North West tonight

:13:28. > :13:42.we followed the fortunes of a group of allotmenteers

:13:43. > :13:44.from Manchester determined to put on a show to help raise ?10,000

:13:45. > :13:50.for disabled access at The Crumpsall Well, yesterday was show time after

:13:51. > :14:07.months of preparations for Veg Fest. The weather certain wasn't kind

:14:08. > :14:09.but did the public gave generously. The gardeners are vying for best

:14:10. > :14:23.in show and the performers ready to put on a show but the blustery

:14:24. > :14:42.weather is causing concern. Quite fraught, running around last

:14:43. > :14:45.minute. We did not know what the weather would be like. I got here

:14:46. > :14:50.this morning, it was pouring but waiting now for more of the

:14:51. > :15:04.general public. It is one of the best local shows,

:15:05. > :15:05.would the best I have seen for a long time.

:15:06. > :15:06.For the gardeners, it's a tense time waiting to find out who

:15:07. > :15:40.We have seen is a round of nature and we get opportunities to dance in

:15:41. > :15:45.between the vegetables and fruits and flowers. I feel a part of it. We

:15:46. > :15:54.thought it would be a complete disaster, nobody here for the first

:15:55. > :15:57.hour and a bit but everybody came. It was fantastic. Despite the wind

:15:58. > :15:58.and the rain, hundreds of people. Doug the allotment secretary

:15:59. > :15:59.has had a busy few weeks. Finally he gets the chance

:16:00. > :16:08.to enjoy the performances. The day has been a success

:16:09. > :16:14.for the Crumpsall and Cheetham Hill Allotment Society `

:16:15. > :16:38.over a thousand pounds and it's Sorry I missed that. What flavour

:16:39. > :16:40.was the ice cream? ! We will move on quickly to

:16:41. > :16:41.Now to sport and a huge night for Burnley with the return of Premier

:16:42. > :16:45.Richard is there for us as the clarets prepare to take

:16:46. > :17:02.And easy opener against Chelsea. Most of the Burnley fans know how

:17:03. > :17:10.difficult it will be. Those are the Chelsea fans going into that part of

:17:11. > :17:13.Turf Moor. Chelsea will put out a side cost ?200 million to assemble,

:17:14. > :17:20.Burnley spent 6 million on seven new players in the summer, that would

:17:21. > :17:24.buy you one of Diego Costa?s legs! In 2009, the first home game here

:17:25. > :17:28.that season when Burnley win Premier League was against Man

:17:29. > :17:35.United, we will show you what happened, a stunning volley enough

:17:36. > :17:39.to win the game on that day for Burnley. And they might just spring

:17:40. > :17:48.a surprise. I am sure Tony Livsey will be among

:17:49. > :17:51.those fans behind you tonight. I have just seen him!

:17:52. > :18:00.How confident are they? Yeah, they are realistic, Roger,

:18:01. > :18:06.they know how difficult it will be but having said that their form

:18:07. > :18:13.season has convinced many they might just do it, who knows? Good team

:18:14. > :18:18.spirit and a chance as long as we keep it 0`0. We could nick it. My

:18:19. > :18:26.hunch is a draw. I would take that and go home. A team of superstars

:18:27. > :18:29.but it is the posh boy going to the Council of State. They will get a

:18:30. > :18:40.cigar. They will not like it. Many regard Mourinho?s men as favourites

:18:41. > :18:46.for the title. What does Sean make of the opening game?

:18:47. > :18:51.Well, the fans here have nicknamed Sean the ginger Mourinho. He is

:18:52. > :18:59.quietly confident. Let's hear from him. Home and away you play every

:19:00. > :19:05.team. It is a relevant, for sure, tough challenge, fantastic manager

:19:06. > :19:10.and club and team but amazing power in the market. There are no

:19:11. > :19:17.guarantees for anyone. I want to win against Burnley. That is the first

:19:18. > :19:25.step. And to win against Burnley will be hard. I can imagine.

:19:26. > :19:31.Well, these teams are the last to get their Premier League campaign is

:19:32. > :19:56.under way. The other sides were in action at the weekend.

:19:57. > :20:02.It was Daniel's 36th goal in 50 games.

:20:03. > :20:41.The most clinical striker. We were not at our best today.

:20:42. > :20:50.We were nervous, it's a pity. `` pity.

:20:51. > :20:57.Family players do need? Four or five, I would say.

:20:58. > :21:06.Everton have done plenty of transfer business but let the lead slip at

:21:07. > :21:10.Leicester. Super strikes from two players should have given the

:21:11. > :21:17.winning start but this draw will feel like two points dropped.

:21:18. > :21:24.Blackpool have decided to keep it in the family. Their new signing moves

:21:25. > :21:31.to Bloomfield Road with his twin brother. The team is without a point

:21:32. > :21:39.after defeat to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. A couple of goals did

:21:40. > :21:45.damage for the men. Two `when the final score. Fleetwood town made it

:21:46. > :21:49.two wins out of two with a win at Notts County. Preston North end hit

:21:50. > :21:52.four goals past their opponents. Excellent wins for Morecambe and

:21:53. > :21:53.Berry as well. Cricket now `

:21:54. > :21:55.In the LV County championship Lancashire's match against Durham

:21:56. > :21:58.ended in nail biting finish. Durham ended their second innings on

:21:59. > :22:26.187 leaving Lancashire 107 to win. The fans are arriving in confidence.

:22:27. > :22:34.We were powerful commentary of the game on BBC radio Lancashire. From

:22:35. > :22:37.Turf Moor, back to you. A proud young man! Thank you very much.

:22:38. > :22:40.Enjoy the game. Now to North Lancashire,

:22:41. > :22:42.where an enterprising teenager has It might seem curious but Sam Jones

:22:43. > :22:54.could have found a niche market. He set up his business in Carnforth

:22:55. > :22:56.after noticing the rise in the numbers of families keeping

:22:57. > :22:58.poultry at home. # This is a song about birds # About

:22:59. > :23:05.birds? It's the latest resort

:23:06. > :23:11.on the tourist trail and clients are When you go on holiday and

:23:12. > :23:21.if you do have chickens, They had nowhere to go,

:23:22. > :23:27.so I've taken advantage and I've Chicken check`in is pretty quick,

:23:28. > :23:31.they don't bring much luggage. Guests are given free range

:23:32. > :23:35.of the 5`star facilities. Fresh water, food, access to fresh

:23:36. > :23:38.grass 24/7, whenever they want. While some choose to lounge by the

:23:39. > :23:42.pool, others prefer room service. It costs the paltry sum

:23:43. > :23:48.of ?1 per night for each bird. And Sam has already been surprised

:23:49. > :23:50.by the number of bookings. It started off with posters on

:23:51. > :23:56.the lamp posts, and from there, the public have just been in contact,

:23:57. > :24:02.September is now fully booked. 11`year`old Zoe keeps chickens in

:24:03. > :24:04.St Anne's, and would happily shell I love chickens so much,

:24:05. > :24:11.they are my favourite animal. I think a chicken hotel would be

:24:12. > :24:14.good, because it's very hard to find people who will look after chickens,

:24:15. > :24:18.it's quite a hard thing to do. Now, Sam is planning to expand

:24:19. > :24:21.the business. It might be that I have to get

:24:22. > :24:24.a delivery service. People might not be able to drive to

:24:25. > :24:29.get here, then they are stuck, so... Chicken owners can be assured

:24:30. > :24:37.this is no "Fowl`ty" Towers. Sam is promising his guests

:24:38. > :24:58.an "egg`cellent" stay. She did not use the chicken Song.

:24:59. > :25:06.Probably not appropriate. Paul said he put his chickens into a boarding

:25:07. > :25:09.kennel and it cost ?137. That would be ?49. He could have hit on

:25:10. > :25:15.something. Good entrepreneurial skills. As long as he doubles his

:25:16. > :25:22.rates, he was still be in business. Profit margin! It is all about the

:25:23. > :25:27.money. It isn't getting any better. We have a unsettled week ahead, the

:25:28. > :25:35.temperatures will be disappointing. You are talking 15 or 16 degrees.

:25:36. > :25:38.This is not what we expect. Lines of showers throughout the day,
