:00:00. > :00:00.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight. Our top story:

:00:07. > :00:08.Investigations into a fatal fire in Cumbria. It is believed the victims

:00:09. > :00:15.were firework technicians. Guests at a weekend wedding

:00:16. > :00:17.reception spoke of their horror. Also tonight: How Back to the

:00:18. > :00:19.Future's vision could really be the shape

:00:20. > :00:36.of things to come, thanks to scientists in Liverpool.

:00:37. > :00:38.And I will have the latest on deadline day transfers,

:00:39. > :00:40.including the imminent arrival Radamel Falcao at Manchester United,

:00:41. > :00:43.after the club agrees a deal for the Colombian striker.

:00:44. > :00:45.And a Cheshire vicar, his angry carpenter and their medieval row.

:00:46. > :00:58.Could this be the original parson's nose?

:00:59. > :01:01.Investigations are continuing to find out what caused a fire

:01:02. > :01:11.which killed two people in Cumbria at the weekend.

:01:12. > :01:14.A shed containing fireworks to be used in

:01:15. > :01:16.a wedding party celebration ignited, causing a catastrophic blaze.

:01:17. > :01:17.Horrified party guests ran for cover.

:01:18. > :01:20.The dead couple are believed to have been firework technicians.

:01:21. > :01:29.Our Chief Reporter is at the scene just outside Windermere now.

:01:30. > :01:50.This is to say `` just outside Windermere. You can see their white

:01:51. > :01:54.marquee behind me. That was erected on Saturday afternoon. High point

:01:55. > :01:55.was to be the spectacular fireworks display. Suddenly the celebrations

:01:56. > :02:05.were cut short when some of fireworks ignited prematurely when

:02:06. > :02:10.in a storage shed and two people, thought to possibly be fireworks

:02:11. > :02:18.technicians, lost their lives. According to witnesses, explosions

:02:19. > :02:25.were deafening. We heard this ground shaking cannon fire. We could see

:02:26. > :02:30.exhibition standard fireworks exploding. When we arrived, we

:02:31. > :02:39.quickly ascertained that the fireworks in the main had all gone

:02:40. > :02:42.off, but we could not be too careful and we needed to make sure

:02:43. > :02:49.safety for firefighters was paramount. Guests fled for cover.

:02:50. > :02:55.When the flames were extinguished, this was the scene of devastation.

:02:56. > :03:02.The shed that had been used to store fireworks reduced to ashes. Two

:03:03. > :03:07.people cut inside were dead. It is difficult to find exactly the

:03:08. > :03:16.ignition source. We will do our utmost to get some cancers to this

:03:17. > :03:20.tragic event. And this tragedy on a day which should have been

:03:21. > :03:26.with happiness and celebration. Now an investigation is underway to find

:03:27. > :03:29.out how this happened. A dramatic and terrifying ordeal for or

:03:30. > :03:35.involved. Everyone's thoughts will be with the families of the victims

:03:36. > :03:41.tonight. How long is the investigation likely to last? Is

:03:42. > :03:46.could last for some time. Cumbria police are working

:03:47. > :03:54.and Safety Executive to find out exactly what the

:03:55. > :03:59.Saturday afternoon. The two people who have died have not been formally

:04:00. > :04:07.identified. We will have to wait official confirmation when the

:04:08. > :04:20.police release their names presumably in the next day or two.

:04:21. > :04:22.Police officers were trying to throw fans back into the Leppings Lane

:04:23. > :04:25.pens as the Hillsborough disaster unfolded, the inquests have heard.

:04:26. > :04:27.A Nottinghamshire Police constable recorded in his notes seeing other

:04:28. > :04:30.officers pushing fans as they tried to escape the crush.

:04:31. > :04:32.For more on this, we can join our reporter who is live

:04:33. > :04:36.Who was this officer and what did he say about fans being

:04:37. > :04:45.Well, he is Brian Walton, a police constable from Nottinghamshire

:04:46. > :04:51.Constabulary. He was on duty in Sheffield as what is called a

:04:52. > :05:00.spotter. He had made around for trips between the station and the

:05:01. > :05:03.stadium. He heard over the radio that something serious had happened

:05:04. > :05:12.inside of the stadium. He rushed inside and arrived on the

:05:13. > :05:19.pitch between five past and ten past three just as the players were the

:05:20. > :05:22.pitch. A barrister read part of the notes he made after the disaster. He

:05:23. > :05:27.said this, on stand, I saw police officers to

:05:28. > :05:33.rollback were apparently trying to get onto

:05:34. > :05:39.the pitch. He meant by that. He said, I saw a

:05:40. > :05:50.police officer on the fencing thinking that was because they were

:05:51. > :06:00.trying to get on to the to revive one person who was passed

:06:01. > :06:04.from ten three. The inquest continue tomorrow. `` from the third

:06:05. > :06:05.pen. A conductor who has enjoyed

:06:06. > :06:07.an international career since sexually assaulting a teenage girl

:06:08. > :06:08.in the 1970s has finally been sent Nicholas Smith worked with young

:06:09. > :06:13.musicians at Chetham's School She finally contacted the police

:06:14. > :06:18.after hearing that a teacher at the school had been sent to jail for

:06:19. > :06:20.indecently assaulting another pupil. This report contains

:06:21. > :06:22.some flash photography. Nicholas Smith conducting the

:06:23. > :06:24.South Carolina Philharmonic. While he has been building

:06:25. > :06:27.an international career in the past 40 years, his victim has turned to

:06:28. > :06:30.alcohol and drugs, a life of In the late '70s, Smith was

:06:31. > :06:36.the conductor of the chamber The girl was a promising cellist

:06:37. > :06:46.in his ensemble. She described him as a creep, slimy,

:06:47. > :07:01.smurky, yukky. The victim, now 52, was 15 at the

:07:02. > :07:08.time. She was homesick and having difficulty coping with the regime at

:07:09. > :07:16.the school. Smith and his wife took her to their home in the country for

:07:17. > :07:22.the weekend. While his wife was having a bath, he forced her onto

:07:23. > :07:25.the floor. She said, I hope Nicholas Smith feels disgusted I his own

:07:26. > :07:26.abuse of power. The woman went to

:07:27. > :07:27.the police only after hearing about the death of Frances Andrade,

:07:28. > :07:29.a contemporary at Chetham's. She had been sexually abused

:07:30. > :07:32.by a teacher, Michael Brewer, and killed herself

:07:33. > :07:33.during his trial years later. Brewer is now in jail

:07:34. > :07:38.and a number of other former teachers at Chethams are being

:07:39. > :07:39.investigated by the police. Today,

:07:40. > :07:42.Smith's lawyer told the court: He has gone from being a celebrated

:07:43. > :07:48.and much sought`after conductor here Friends who held him in high

:07:49. > :07:55.regard will now look at him again. Smith, who now lives in France,

:07:56. > :07:58.was given an eight month sentence. It means he will spend

:07:59. > :08:14.at least four months in prison. A man from Kendal has been jailed

:08:15. > :08:17.after giving his girlfriend HIV 45`year`old Alan Mason from Endmoor

:08:18. > :08:20.didn't tell the woman he was carrying the virus

:08:21. > :08:23.until she started to feel unwell. He has been sentenced to two

:08:24. > :08:26.years and eight months. A man has died after falling five

:08:27. > :08:29.floors down a lift shaft in Bolton. Police said the 27`year`old man

:08:30. > :08:32.and a friend were stuck in a lift in a block of flats on Marsden Road

:08:33. > :08:34.on Saturday. The Health and Safety Executive is

:08:35. > :08:37.investigating whether the doors of the lift may have been forced

:08:38. > :08:40.open and he fell Police investigating the death

:08:50. > :08:51.in June have issued five new They believe they may hold the key

:08:52. > :08:57.to tracking down his attacker. 26`year`old Robert died five

:08:58. > :09:00.days after the assault. The number of Neighbourhood Policing

:09:01. > :09:05.Teams in Cumbria could be cut from ten to three

:09:06. > :09:09.as the force tries to save money. Cumbria Constabulary is carrying

:09:10. > :09:11.out a review of its services. It needs to make ?10 million

:09:12. > :09:17.worth of savings by 2017. They say twins have

:09:18. > :09:20.a special bond between them that But on the Isle of Man, if a pair of

:09:21. > :09:28.newborns need special care they are Parents there say they want to keep

:09:29. > :09:34.their children together in those crucial first days,

:09:35. > :09:37.and today on the island a record number of twins have gathered to try

:09:38. > :09:39.and raise money so Nobles Hospital When Oscar and Finlay were born

:09:40. > :09:46.prematurely they were taken to the special care baby unit where they

:09:47. > :09:49.spent their first few weeks apart. Five years later,

:09:50. > :09:53.they are inseparable. But in those first few weeks

:09:54. > :10:07.they couldn't be together. It is just quite an emotional,

:10:08. > :10:12.overwhelming thing to have two babies in two different court this

:10:13. > :10:17.with two lots of equipment and being in the middle of them, trying to

:10:18. > :10:29.monitor them both. To see them together would just be amazing.

:10:30. > :10:31.A twin neonatal cot gives newborn twins that chance

:10:32. > :10:34.These parents hope to raise enough money to let newborns

:10:35. > :10:46.It would be strange for them not to be together.

:10:47. > :10:50.Five sets of twins were born on the island just last month.

:10:51. > :10:56.It is excellent that the public are behind us to increase funds to

:10:57. > :11:03.benefit the Isle of Man. 92`year`old twins Peggy and Elsie

:11:04. > :11:06.want to help, so newborns can be together to bond, something they say

:11:07. > :11:13.is with you forever. It is like we are telepathic. We

:11:14. > :11:20.keep wearing the same colour. Only few hospitals have facilities

:11:21. > :11:22.for newborn twins to share a cot but these families want to make

:11:23. > :11:24.sure people at Nobles Hospital have Taking a step back in time `

:11:25. > :11:55.the new drama charting the life And how some medieval mischief at

:11:56. > :11:56.this church in Nantwich led to one of the country's most famous

:11:57. > :11:57.How was the commute home from work tonight?

:11:58. > :12:03.Were you sitting in what felt like endless queues?

:12:04. > :12:06.How does the idea of speeding past the traffic jams 1,500 feet up

:12:07. > :12:16.But now academics at the University of Liverpool are taking part

:12:17. > :12:19.in a Europe wide project to develop the technology for flying cars.

:12:20. > :12:29.Our reporter has been along to find out more.

:12:30. > :12:41.It is not exactly a time machine. But step inside this pod at the

:12:42. > :12:45.University of Liverpool and you can glimpse into the future. The future

:12:46. > :12:52.of commuting. Are vehicle concept is vertical take`off and landing. You

:12:53. > :12:56.could take off from your own driveway, fly to break you need to

:12:57. > :13:00.go and land they are. This is door`to`door commuting we are

:13:01. > :13:08.talking about. This is a but academics are using it as part

:13:09. > :13:14.of a project working with five other universities across Europe to see

:13:15. > :13:19.congestion on the ground. With a test

:13:20. > :13:24.taking in Liverpool city centre, they found after around five hours

:13:25. > :13:29.of lessons, most people get the semiautomated so you would not need

:13:30. > :13:35.a helicopter licence. this will just be a toy for rich

:13:36. > :13:40.boys? accessible? The whole idea of the

:13:41. > :13:49.project is the technology which will make it as

:13:50. > :13:55.cheap as driving a car. The idea of flying cars is not exactly new. And

:13:56. > :14:01.now the technology to make it happen whether people really want the

:14:02. > :14:09.reality version of be an infrastructure. You couldn't

:14:10. > :14:17.just have them buzzing all over the place. It won't be ready for 30

:14:18. > :14:23.years? I will be gone by then! With the work being done here, it is

:14:24. > :14:30.still closer than ever. That will never get off the ground!

:14:31. > :14:32.It is that day when football chairmen, managers

:14:33. > :14:51.And Manchester United sprang a shock after agreeing a loan deal for the

:14:52. > :14:54.Yes, they have agreed a season`long loan with Monaco

:14:55. > :14:59.A lot of people had predicted he would end up at Manchester City.

:15:00. > :15:01.It will cost United ?6 million, with the deal including an option

:15:02. > :15:05.Part of a very busy day at Old Trafford.

:15:06. > :15:07.Our reporter has been following developments for us.

:15:08. > :15:27.Fax machines are still used for that role transfers. Here, it has been

:15:28. > :15:32.very busy. They have broken the British transfer record to sign

:15:33. > :15:39.angled the Maria. The pattern of Manchester United being the focus of

:15:40. > :15:43.transfer window has been the focus this year right up until the

:15:44. > :15:45.transfer window 150 million ` the price of

:15:46. > :15:46.restructuring Manchester United but will it be enough to restore them to

:15:47. > :15:49.the top of the Premier League? A summer of spending continued today

:15:50. > :15:52.with the signing of Radamel Falcao That could turn into a ?43 million

:15:53. > :16:09.permanent deal for the Colombian I heard the news and I didn't want

:16:10. > :16:21.to work. I wanted to come here to celebrate! I am so excited. We

:16:22. > :16:32.needed some new players. They are so far behind. Manchester United can

:16:33. > :16:34.still attract the best players. Even though they don't have Champions

:16:35. > :16:35.League football. After drawing a blank at Burnley,

:16:36. > :16:36.new manager Louis Van Gaal has moved Shinji Kagawa has gone back to

:16:37. > :16:46.Dortmund, Javier Hernandez to Real Madrid while Danny Welbeck

:16:47. > :16:48.and Tom Cleverley could also be And it seems even the defenders

:16:49. > :16:56.United sign have an eye for goal. This is new Dutch centre back Daley

:16:57. > :17:10.Blind who has joined from Ajax. He can play on many positions.

:17:11. > :17:22.Here's a good player. He can read the game very well. I would like

:17:23. > :17:27.another centre back. We need another big, commanding centre back. Even

:17:28. > :17:34.with ?150 million spent, there those who believe more still needs

:17:35. > :17:40.to be Some breaking news about Danny

:17:41. > :17:43.Welbeck. Rumours he is having a medical at Arsenal. That deal could

:17:44. > :17:50.go through before the deadline 11pm. Manchester United, with their

:17:51. > :17:57.spending, have proved this summer that they can compete financially

:17:58. > :18:00.with any other in the world. In short, they have spent a fortune,

:18:01. > :18:04.And as the window gets closer to shutting the more frantic

:18:05. > :18:05.Down the road at Manchester City, one of their longest serving players

:18:06. > :18:09.Yes, Micah Richards is on his way to Italy.

:18:10. > :18:12.It is understood he turned down a number of offers from

:18:13. > :18:15.Premier League clubs to join Fiorentina on a season long loan

:18:16. > :18:19.The England defender, who has been at City for 12 years,

:18:20. > :18:24.has found his opportunities limited under Manuel Pellegrini.

:18:25. > :18:26.Elsewhere in the Premier League, Burnley have signed

:18:27. > :18:30.The Scottish international has joined for an undisclosed fee

:18:31. > :18:34.The Clarets have also taken the number 39 in this line`up ,

:18:35. > :18:36.Chelsea's England under 21 international midfielder Nathan

:18:37. > :18:42.What about any notable moves in the Football League?

:18:43. > :18:45.Wigan didn't want to lose him but James McArthur looks to be

:18:46. > :18:57.The two clubs have agreed a fee of ?7 million.

:18:58. > :18:59.He's in London with a view to completing the deal

:19:00. > :19:03.after making it clear he's keen on a return to the Premier League.

:19:04. > :19:05.Going the other way is the French striker Andy Delort from Tours FC.

:19:06. > :19:07.He was presented to the home crowd on Saturday

:19:08. > :19:11.And Blackburn Rovers have signed the Republic

:19:12. > :19:13.of Ireland defender Shane Duffy from Everton for an undisclosed fee.

:19:14. > :19:15.The centre half, who has made 10 first team

:19:16. > :19:23.appearances for the blues has signed a three year deal at Ewood Park.

:19:24. > :19:35.Not a lot happening on Merseyside yet. Liverpool and Everton did most

:19:36. > :19:38.of their business earlier. Keep up`to`date on the BBC sport website.

:19:39. > :19:41.Lancashire's cricketers are in serious trouble after day two

:19:42. > :19:44.of a crucial Roses match at Emirates Old Trafford. Desperate

:19:45. > :19:46.for points in their battle against relegation,

:19:47. > :19:49.Lancs are very much second best at the halfway point of the match.

:19:50. > :19:52.After being bowled out for 278, an unbeaten 182 from Adam Lyth has

:19:53. > :19:55.helped the visitors to 396 for 5 in reply which means they already

:19:56. > :20:00.lead by 118 runs with five first innings wickets in hand.

:20:01. > :20:02.Finally tonight, here at North West Tonight, we already regard the

:20:03. > :20:05.region as the capital of British sport and we could have another

:20:06. > :20:13.The Merseyside Nighthawks are through to the Britbowl whch will

:20:14. > :20:16.decide the country's American Football Champions.

:20:17. > :20:20.They reached the big game by beating Shropshire Revolution

:20:21. > :20:43.That is all the sport. More transfer news on the Lake Billiton.

:20:44. > :20:47.You have a message on your phone. Your wife wants you to buy some milk

:20:48. > :20:49.on the way home! A new drama telling the story

:20:50. > :20:50.of how Chester Zoo came And tonight, Inside Out North West

:20:51. > :20:54.will be uncovering the real life Set in the 1930s,

:20:55. > :20:57.Our Zoo is the story of one man's vision ` to open the

:20:58. > :21:00.first zoo in Britain without bars. The drama has been shot on location

:21:01. > :21:04.across the north west including here in the Cheshire

:21:05. > :21:06.village of Great Budsworth. Actor Lee Inglby plays

:21:07. > :21:09.the lead role of George Mottershead, whose daughter June Williams played

:21:10. > :21:28.an important constants role. `` consultant role. She give us

:21:29. > :21:33.information about her father. It is very exciting. I never dreams that

:21:34. > :21:35.this would ever make a film. Her father George began collecting

:21:36. > :21:36.birds and animals at his shop His growing menagerie attracting

:21:37. > :21:40.members of the public and by 1930 he decided to open a zoo `

:21:41. > :21:56.the first in Britain without cages. It takes courage to put monkeys on

:21:57. > :22:05.an island with just water around them. A lot of people would not take

:22:06. > :22:13.that chance. My father took the chance of having the animals behind

:22:14. > :22:21.water or mesh for the Lions. I remember people saying that you

:22:22. > :22:26.couldn't keep lions behind a fence like that. But they are still they

:22:27. > :22:29.are! `` they are. Chester Zoo has come along way

:22:30. > :22:31.since the 1930s. But the foundations on which it

:22:32. > :22:34.was built have remained a crucial And next year it enters an exciting

:22:35. > :22:38.new chapter in its history. And staying true to

:22:39. > :22:42.George Mottershead's vision ` the animals will be housed on islands

:22:43. > :22:46.accessible on foot and by boat. And Inside Out North West returns

:22:47. > :22:47.tonight for the first We've all heard the phrase

:22:48. > :23:07."the parson's nose" ` a reference to the end of a chicken or a turkey

:23:08. > :23:13.we'd rather not think about. But have you ever wondered

:23:14. > :23:15.where it came from? The answer could lie within

:23:16. > :23:17.the hallowed walls of a church And it seems it was

:23:18. > :23:25.a craftsman's criticism You might call it mediaeval

:23:26. > :23:40.mischief, as our reporter found. Long before the live birds, these

:23:41. > :23:50.birds were nesting in the church chancery. But they don't match. One

:23:51. > :24:06.has the face of a parson. It seems that the church was not good at

:24:07. > :24:10.paying the sculptor. So it seems that they carved his face into the

:24:11. > :24:21.rear end of the bird. I don't know whether he found that funny. It is

:24:22. > :24:25.on the back of the bird if you look closely. I had no idea. It is nice

:24:26. > :24:35.to know it is on your doorstep. Visitors today were bemused. I have

:24:36. > :24:48.lived here for many decades. I had no idea that the phrase, the

:24:49. > :24:59.parson's nose, originated here. We have heard people talk about it, but

:25:00. > :25:09.we didn't know it was from Nantwich. Across the road, the local butcher.

:25:10. > :25:20.A real parson's nose. This used to be fill of feathers, but is now
