:00:26. > :00:27.explosions after dozens of `ttacks on cash machines last year.

:00:28. > :00:29.The judge described them as having posed

:00:30. > :00:37.The gang attacking a bank cash machine, one of 31

:00:38. > :00:43.After prizing the ATM free, explosive gas is pumped

:00:44. > :00:47.into the bank and ignited with a simple m`tch

:00:48. > :00:49.As far as I'm aware, this is the first prosecution for this type

:00:50. > :00:53.There have been similar att`cks on the continent but never

:00:54. > :00:58.The effects are devastating and lucrative.

:00:59. > :01:01.The spree started in late winter last year.

:01:02. > :01:04.First it was banks in the Mhdlands, then some closer to Merseyshde,

:01:05. > :01:09.including branches of Barcl`ys, NatWest and Santander.

:01:10. > :01:12.On one evening in September, the gang carried out two rahds

:01:13. > :01:15.simultaneously, netting a total of ?250,000.

:01:16. > :01:20.Judge Mark Brown told the ddfendants that it was fortunate that no one

:01:21. > :01:26.He said the explosions had occurred in

:01:27. > :01:30.an uncontrolled way and that public safety must have been put at risk.

:01:31. > :01:33.He also said that the defendants must have known

:01:34. > :01:37.about the risks that they wdre taking and posing to the public

:01:38. > :01:38.During one raid in Leicestershire, nearby families were woken

:01:39. > :01:46.I heard the loudest bang, like a bomb going off.

:01:47. > :01:49.It woke me up and I thought, what on earth was that?

:01:50. > :01:50.Of course, the next morning, the bank was taped off,

:01:51. > :01:58.Today, the ringleaders, Craig Cartwright from Coventry,

:01:59. > :02:01.and Kurt Beddoes of Huyton, got 17 years after pleading guilty to

:02:02. > :02:04.Ian Ellis from Rainhill was given 13 xears.

:02:05. > :02:08.Thomas Whittingham from West Derby and Anthony Bushell

:02:09. > :02:10.of no fixed abode got 18 and 17 years respectively

:02:11. > :02:18.All five got eight years for conspiracy to burgle.

:02:19. > :02:20.Evidence found on the defendants' phones and at the premises they

:02:21. > :02:25.They were caught after being tracked with a stolen cash box.

:02:26. > :02:27.Summing up, Judge Mark Brown said that these

:02:28. > :02:29.offences had been committed by an organised crime group

:02:30. > :02:37.He also said that their financial rewards had been

:02:38. > :02:42.considerable but he said th`t the losses to the banks had been too.
