:00:00. > :00:00.Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with Annabel Tiffin

:00:00. > :00:09.a couple in their seventies are still missing 24 hours

:00:10. > :00:14.They'd been warned repeatedly that their hoarding

:00:15. > :00:21.good news and bad from the National Grid: some pylons

:00:22. > :00:27.But giant new ones will spring up in South Cumbria.

:00:28. > :00:33.This is just a disaster for the landscape of the Duddon Estuary.

:00:34. > :00:35.Alongside Hitler walks walks the present virtual

:00:36. > :00:38.dictator of Germany, Himmler.

:00:39. > :00:41.He was Hitler's right hand lan but did Northwest Soldiers catch

:00:42. > :01:02.Autumn gold - the region's changing colours taken by you.

:01:03. > :01:05.Two people are still missing after fire gutted a house

:01:06. > :01:12.It's not known whether the owners - a couple believed to be

:01:13. > :01:14.in their 60s or 70s - were in the house

:01:15. > :01:18.Merseyside Fire Service says its officers had previously

:01:19. > :01:21.warned the couple that hoarding items inside the house

:01:22. > :01:39.The fire quickly engulfed the house. A passing motorist dialled 899 after

:01:40. > :01:43.spotting smoke just after four o'clock yesterday afternoon.

:01:44. > :01:47.Firefighters were on the scdne eight minutes later. We are three doors

:01:48. > :01:53.down. We were out when the fire started. We came home on thd bus and

:01:54. > :01:59.we thought it might have bedn our place alight. We learn from somebody

:02:00. > :02:04.else on the street it wasn't. It was the house with the yellow c`r. We

:02:05. > :02:08.knew it was occupied by people who didn't go out very much. Knowing

:02:09. > :02:12.what we know of the people, it seemed quite likely that thdy were

:02:13. > :02:19.still in the house. It was very shocking. The Fire Service says it

:02:20. > :02:25.could be days before they m`naged to access the house and surgerx safely.

:02:26. > :02:34.They don't know whether the occupants of the house were inside

:02:35. > :02:40.at the time. They note they have a daughter but haven't been able to

:02:41. > :02:43.contact her. Authorities had been contacted with reports that they

:02:44. > :02:50.were holding large amounts of material at the property. Wd have

:02:51. > :02:56.struggled to gain access but we are working in unison with Mersdyside

:02:57. > :03:02.Police and a demolition company to affect access. Officers had

:03:03. > :03:09.previously visited the housd but had been unable to access. As the couple

:03:10. > :03:17.owned it, they would have h`d to obtain a warrant to coming `nd had

:03:18. > :03:20.not yet been able to do so. As a private property, we don't have the

:03:21. > :03:25.same powers but we have been and given advice to the owners. The

:03:26. > :03:32.building is now being dismantled to make it safe for fire officdrs to

:03:33. > :03:35.search for the couple. Neighbours say they fear the worst.

:03:36. > :03:39.The National Grid has agreed to spend millions burying

:03:40. > :03:42.a new power cable deep bene`th the Lake District National Park

:03:43. > :03:44.And it'll spend more than a billion constructing a tunnel under

:03:45. > :03:47.Morecambe Bay to link that cable to the national transmission system.

:03:48. > :03:50.But it still plans to use htge new pylons to carry the cable

:03:51. > :03:54.And that news has been greeted with dismay by those who believe

:03:55. > :03:57.the scheme with scar a picturesque part of South Cumbria.

:03:58. > :03:58.Our Chief Reporter, Dave Guest, has the story.

:03:59. > :04:01.This is why the new power line is needed.

:04:02. > :04:04.It's a nuclear powered stathon which is due to be built at

:04:05. > :04:07.They will have to get the electricity generated

:04:08. > :04:12.It's a massive project and one that's proving controversial.

:04:13. > :04:16.It's just a disaster for the landscape of the Duddon Estuary.

:04:17. > :04:20.Part of the proposal involvds putting up giant pylons that run

:04:21. > :04:23.straight through the picturesque Furness penhnsula.

:04:24. > :04:27.Today, those concerned about the plan were invited to this

:04:28. > :04:30.hotel in Kendal to discuss exactly what the National Grid

:04:31. > :04:36.They discovered the company had made some changes to its original plans.

:04:37. > :04:38.For instance, they've deciddd to bury a 14-mile stretch along

:04:39. > :04:40.the western fringe of the Lake District National Park

:04:41. > :04:58.That's on top of the money they've already agreed

:04:59. > :05:02.tunnel beneath Morecambe Bax. The cost of that, ?1.2 billhon.

:05:03. > :05:06.However, they still plan to run an overgrown section

:05:07. > :05:11.About quarter of the route will be underground and out of sight.

:05:12. > :05:14.The rest of the route, we think we can replace the existing

:05:15. > :05:16.line with bigger pylons but a lot fewer of them.

:05:17. > :05:21.When he says bigger, he means they could be almost twice

:05:22. > :05:23.the size of the existing pylons in the Duddon Estuuary.

:05:24. > :05:26.50 metres high, about the shze of Nelson 's column.

:05:27. > :05:28.We would very much like to see it being buried under the

:05:29. > :05:31.Duddon Estuary because it would avoid an awful lot of problems

:05:32. > :05:34.they would have at the top of the estuary because that's

:05:35. > :05:36.where both the landscape and also internationally protected

:05:37. > :05:38.wildlife sites combine to m`ke it a very difficult area

:05:39. > :05:42.We need to push them to the final solution.

:05:43. > :05:46.Of course, National Grid wotld say it's simply not cost-effecthve

:05:47. > :05:51.But where they've gone so f`r means they could actually spend

:05:52. > :05:53.that additional money and m`ke a big difference to everyond

:05:54. > :05:57.We have to balance the environment, the landscape, people's opinions.

:05:58. > :06:07.We think we can route an ovdrhead line in a really sensitive way

:06:08. > :06:11.National Grid say they will be starting a public consultathon

:06:12. > :06:14.at the end of this week and it will run through till early January.

:06:15. > :06:16.They hope to submit a formal planning application during 201 .

:06:17. > :06:20.Their main aim is to try to get construction underway during 20 9.

:06:21. > :06:25.David Guest, BBC North West tonight. Kendall.

:06:26. > :06:28.A man's appeared in court accused of murder -

:06:29. > :06:30.after a dismembered and burned body was found in a suitcase

:06:31. > :06:43.The body of Yang Lu was discovered on October 10th in a lay-by off

:06:44. > :06:47.Ming Yang, who's from Manchdster, has been remanded in custodx,

:06:48. > :06:49.he'll appear at Nottingham Crown Court tomorrow.

:06:50. > :06:51.A man's being questioned in Merseyside after a van r`mmed

:06:52. > :06:54.into a police car and drove at an officer - before being chased

:06:55. > :07:00.Police say the incident unfolded following reports that

:07:01. > :07:02.a man in a van had approached a teenage girl.

:07:03. > :07:12.Manchester's Lord Mayor Carl Austin-Behan says he's reported

:07:13. > :07:15.a hate crime to police, after being subjected

:07:16. > :07:17.to homophobic abuse outside a Justin Bieber concert last night.

:07:18. > :07:19.Meanwhile inside the pop st`r himself stormed off stage

:07:20. > :07:21.at the Manchester arena because his fans wouldn't

:07:22. > :07:44.A coroner has heard how a m`n was beaten by Spanish police molents

:07:45. > :07:50.before his death. Luke Rhod`n was on a stag weekend in a beta. Police

:07:51. > :07:59.have said they were simply restraining him. A number of people

:08:00. > :08:06.on the weekend gave evidencd today saying that they had been drinking

:08:07. > :08:13.and hadn't had much sleep. They said that they had left Luke Rhodan to

:08:14. > :08:17.sleep it off. They went out for a second evening. Another witness in a

:08:18. > :08:24.different group at the same hotel described how later that night he

:08:25. > :08:29.heard a loud bind and saw Ltke hobbling through the lobby having

:08:30. > :08:40.apparently jumped from his balcony. He said that he appeared to be an

:08:41. > :08:50.some sort of hallucinogenic drug. Police came to restrain him. On two

:08:51. > :08:54.occasions police pressed about on against his throat, he said. He

:08:55. > :09:03.said, it was police brutality. Another witness filmed what was

:09:04. > :09:09.happening on a mobile phone. She said that the police hit hil with so

:09:10. > :09:17.much force that the bat on flew out of his hand. She also says that

:09:18. > :09:21.police threatened her if shd didn't stop filming. Spanish policd have

:09:22. > :09:26.always said that they simplx acted to restrain him. Tomorrow, we hear

:09:27. > :09:28.from the Spanish doctor who came on the scene to treat Luke. Thd inquest

:09:29. > :09:34.is expected to last until Wddnesday. Still to come on

:09:35. > :09:43.North West Tonight - This looks like a regular p`ssenger

:09:44. > :09:48.plane. The last thing you whll see is duty-free. It is part of a

:09:49. > :09:52.project called Into The Blud. Commentator: Pedro! He Scords For

:09:53. > :10:00.Chelsea. Humiliated mourinho apologises

:10:01. > :10:03.to manchester united fans after the Reds

:10:04. > :10:14.are battered at the Bridge. All across the North West

:10:15. > :10:18.there are memorials to the len and women who fought and didd

:10:19. > :10:21.in the two great wars Of course many of our heroes lived

:10:22. > :10:28.to tell their tales from thd most But one incredible story has never

:10:29. > :10:36.been told on screen... And it involves one of the lost

:10:37. > :10:40.infamous Nazis of World War II Hitler has killed himself,

:10:41. > :10:48.along with many leading Nazhs. On May the 23rd, this extraordinary

:10:49. > :10:51.footage is taken. It shows the dead body of the most

:10:52. > :10:54.wanted man in Europe. He's just taken a cyanide phll

:10:55. > :10:58.after being taken prisoner two days Alongside Hitler walks the present

:10:59. > :11:04.virtual dictator of Germany, He planned the Holocaust and ran

:11:05. > :11:13.the death camps but he was captured by five ordinary soldiers

:11:14. > :11:23.on a routine patrol. This is Chris Mannion,

:11:24. > :11:26.who stumbled on the story while researching his grand

:11:27. > :11:27.father's war exploits. Proving it has consumed him

:11:28. > :11:30.for the past three years. My grandfather's picture

:11:31. > :11:33.was on my grandmother's mantelpiece. He sadly died years

:11:34. > :11:36.and years before I was born. As a young boy, you know, mdn who go

:11:37. > :11:39.to war, you think of as heroes. There were lots of stories handed

:11:40. > :11:42.down about a top Nazi, about him landing on D-Day

:11:43. > :11:44.and fighting in Belgium, The story about a top Nazi was one

:11:45. > :11:53.that other families had heard without anyone ever following it up.

:11:54. > :11:55.Until now. Chris was determined to get the full

:11:56. > :11:58.facts behind the arrest of Himmler. He knew there were four

:11:59. > :12:01.other men who were on patrol What he did know was that,

:12:02. > :12:06.in all probability, Trouble is, there's more th`n

:12:07. > :12:09.100 men on here. The first and easiest

:12:10. > :12:15.name to add to the list was Lance Sergeant William Lorris

:12:16. > :12:19.from Ludlow in Shropshire. He was the only man named

:12:20. > :12:22.on the arrest form. Chris used the Internet

:12:23. > :12:24.and an appeal in local The family of Gunnar Michael Fahey

:12:25. > :12:31.from Manchester had also he`rd He just happened to mention matter

:12:32. > :12:42.of factly, I captured He said, I didn't know

:12:43. > :12:48.who he was at the time. one of the other soldiers fhred

:12:49. > :12:51.a warning shot in the air. He said it was either

:12:52. > :12:53.a mill or a baker's shop. I ran in after him and he w`s hid

:12:54. > :12:56.under the counter. I went in after him

:12:57. > :12:58.and pulled him out. Paul Fletcher and his sister

:12:59. > :13:01.Trish had the same family anecdote but their dad,

:13:02. > :13:03.John Fletcher from Liverpool, He'd tell us little stories

:13:04. > :13:09.about the war and he said hd'd captured Heinrich Himmler btt

:13:10. > :13:15.my dad could be a bit of a joke so we all thought he was just

:13:16. > :13:17.stretching the truth, basic`lly So, we just took it

:13:18. > :13:22.with a pinch of salt. The name of Gunner George Slee

:13:23. > :13:24.completed the list. Their descendants had never

:13:25. > :13:26.met until now. We've all got the same storx is one

:13:27. > :13:31.we start to talk about it. Slept in the same rooms,

:13:32. > :13:41.went out drinking, risked And corny as it sounds,

:13:42. > :13:46.my grandfather can see it and we're all, 72 years later,

:13:47. > :13:49.we got together and we're You won't find these five mdn

:13:50. > :13:54.in the history books. But their role in capturing one

:13:55. > :14:13.of the 20th century's most wanted Really painstaking research to get

:14:14. > :14:17.to that story. Incredible. @ll of the families had heard the same and

:14:18. > :14:21.nobody had put it together. Absolutely amazing.

:14:22. > :14:27.And you can hear more on that incredible story

:14:28. > :14:30.on Inside Out North West, which is on BBC One

:14:31. > :14:36.The UK's largest and most sophisticated rese`rch

:14:37. > :14:37.aircraft has arrived at Manchester Airport

:14:38. > :14:42.It's been studying atmospheric pollution across the region

:14:43. > :14:44.from the Lake District to Lhverpool and all points in between.

:14:45. > :14:47.It's part of project called out of the blue and tomorrow yot can

:14:48. > :14:51.as part of the Manchester Science Festhval

:14:52. > :15:04.This looks like a regular jdt eyeliner but it is everything but.

:15:05. > :15:11.It is a giant flying laboratory It's testing the atmosphere for air

:15:12. > :15:25.pollution. James is one of the scientists doing analysis. Tellers

:15:26. > :15:30.tellers what you have been doing. As you can see, this is where the seas

:15:31. > :15:34.would normally be this was ` jet eyeliner. It's been replaced by

:15:35. > :15:40.racks of instruments that mdasure different compounds and gasds and

:15:41. > :15:46.aerosols in the atmosphere. It looks very high-tech, is it? It's very

:15:47. > :15:50.high-tech. These are cutting edge, state of the art instruments. There

:15:51. > :15:57.isn't a flying laboratory lhke this anywhere else in Europe. We have a

:15:58. > :16:04.fantastic facility that we can use to fly around and measure compounds

:16:05. > :16:07.in the air. We should be looking at some data on Wednesday? Yes, we

:16:08. > :16:13.should see some initial restlts on Wednesday. Plenty of exciting things

:16:14. > :16:18.to learn about and see on this plane. To learn a little bit more is

:16:19. > :16:25.Julia Maddock from the environmental research Council. We've brotght the

:16:26. > :16:31.aeroplane here, a state of the art world leading aeroplane to

:16:32. > :16:35.Manchester, along with 40 exhibits, so we can bring to life the science

:16:36. > :16:42.and get people hands-on with what we are doing. Anybody can come and have

:16:43. > :16:48.a look at this flying labor`tory. Absolutely. This is a uniqud

:16:49. > :16:53.opportunity. We are opening the aeroplane of two people frol across

:16:54. > :16:58.the country. They just need to register online on our webshte and

:16:59. > :17:02.they can bid for free tickets for places to come around and sde the

:17:03. > :17:07.equipment and meet the scientists. Thank you for joining us. On

:17:08. > :17:13.Wednesday we will have some results from the collection of data that's

:17:14. > :17:21.been happening today. And adroplane enthusiast 's dream. Stuart is

:17:22. > :17:26.herewith the sport. The main story is about the expression on the faces

:17:27. > :17:34.of those two men. Not as happy as they were earlier in the se`son

:17:35. > :17:39.They could do no wrong. It was going to be a Manchester to horse title

:17:40. > :17:43.race and things are not working out that way now.

:17:44. > :17:46.Yes after setting the pace at the start of the season City

:17:47. > :17:50.And things didn't get a lot better yesterday,

:17:51. > :17:53.Jose Mourinho apologies to the United fans as they lost 4-0

:17:54. > :17:54.on Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge.

:17:55. > :17:57.City at least got a point at home to Southampton but they're now

:17:58. > :18:00.five games without a win - amazingly that's Pep Guardiola's

:18:01. > :18:07.Managing in Manchester isn't proving particularly easy right now.

:18:08. > :18:10.COMMENTATOR: Mourinho's United have been blown

:18:11. > :18:15.Jose humiliated at the ground where once he could do no wrong

:18:16. > :18:17.When the mistakes are individually, it's

:18:18. > :18:26.We have to analyse, we have to think between each other

:18:27. > :18:32.Peter Barnes is one of very few footballers

:18:33. > :18:37.Which of the two clubs would you be more

:18:38. > :18:46.They bought players in the summer and I think you've got young lads

:18:47. > :18:50.coming in and done well but they, young lads need a bit more time

:18:51. > :18:52.They got to find a bit more consistency.

:18:53. > :18:54.To me, it's a big transitional period for United.

:18:55. > :19:00.United a goal down within 30 seconds as they conceded four.

:19:01. > :19:03.City at least salvaged a pohnt to stay top despite this

:19:04. > :19:11.I think it's possibly his toughest job

:19:12. > :19:13.coming to the Premier League in England.

:19:14. > :19:18.different City coming in the New Year.

:19:19. > :19:23.I think we need to pull ourselves together.

:19:24. > :19:30.They played yesterday with Chelsea,

:19:31. > :19:42.I blame only one guy, Jose Lourinho. I think, it was his choice.

:19:43. > :19:46.It's too early to panic for sure but next up

:19:47. > :19:50.for both teams is a local ddrby a match that means more than it

:19:51. > :19:54.In the weekend's other matches only goal difference is keeping

:19:55. > :19:57.Liverpool off the lead of the Premier League.

:19:58. > :20:01.The Reds needed to beat West Brom by two clear goals to top the table.

:20:02. > :20:03.Roberto Firmino's cross set up Sadio Mane for the first.

:20:04. > :20:09.Then Philipe Continho's jinking run doubled Liverpool's lead.

:20:10. > :20:15.There was last minute drama in Burnley's match against Dverton.

:20:16. > :20:17.Sam Vokes gave the Clarets a first-half lead.

:20:18. > :20:20.But Everton's new big money signing Yannick Bolasie replied

:20:21. > :20:26.Then Turf Moor erupted as Johann Berg Gudmundsson's shot

:20:27. > :20:32.was followed up by Scott Arfield for the last gasp winner.

:20:33. > :20:35.In the Football League, Preston made it seven games

:20:36. > :20:42.without defeat with a superb 1- win at promotion-chasing Norwich.

:20:43. > :20:44.Alex Baptiste headed the winner for North End

:20:45. > :20:50.Not such good news in Leagud One where all our sides lost,

:20:51. > :20:52.Oldham going down 2-0 at home to Bristol Rovers.

:20:53. > :20:56.The Latics still in the relegation zond.

:20:57. > :20:59.In league two, Blackpool boss Gary Bowyer cancelled his players'

:21:00. > :21:02.day off and it seemed to work as they hit four past Doncaster

:21:03. > :21:04.Brad Potts scored two including this unstoppable free kick.

:21:05. > :21:06.Manx motorcyclist Cal Crutchlow won his second MotoGP

:21:07. > :21:12.The win in Australia makes the Ramsey resident the first Briton

:21:13. > :21:16.to win two races in a season since Barry Sheene in 1979.

:21:17. > :21:20.And just before I go a reminder that it's Bury v Bolton in leagud one

:21:21. > :21:27.tonight at Gigg Lane, commentary on BBC Radio Manchester.

:21:28. > :21:42.I've been to see that fixture many times down the years. Bolton haven't

:21:43. > :21:48.won at Bury since 1929. Hopdfully, that might give them a chance. It's

:21:49. > :21:51.a big game. Both are flying high in League 1. Bolton looking for an

:21:52. > :21:57.immediate return to the championship. I read that Jose

:21:58. > :22:04.Mourinho now has an identic`l record to David Moyes in the first nine

:22:05. > :22:14.games. That's worse than Sttart s omen. Are they going to givd him

:22:15. > :22:18.more time? Absolutely. Therd is no suggestion that either manager is
