:01:05. > :01:08.Academics have been looking at the brush-strokes of artists

:01:09. > :01:12.Living with dementia, Joyce Cope still enjoys painting.

:01:13. > :01:15.But today, her work is very different from the highly detailed

:01:16. > :01:20.pieces she used to produce before the disease took hold.

:01:21. > :01:24.They are just really good copies of the Old Masters and very detailed.

:01:25. > :01:33.from years ago, but generally, if you ask her what she had

:01:34. > :01:37.for breakfast this morning, she can't remember.

:01:38. > :01:41.But can art, more specifically, the way artists work, tell us

:01:42. > :01:43.something about the development of dementia and other

:01:44. > :01:49.There is some fractal content in this, which is what we call

:01:50. > :01:55.Fractal analysis is a complex, mathematical method of looking

:01:56. > :01:59.The recurring patterns of our brainwaves and

:02:00. > :02:05.The same applies to the individual brush strokes of artists.

:02:06. > :02:11.Now, an analysis of more than 2,000 works by seven famous artists has

:02:12. > :02:15.revealed tiny changes in those patterns.

:02:16. > :02:19.In artists who went on to develop dementia or Parkinson's Disease,

:02:20. > :02:24.the fractal patterns started to change in an unusual way.

:02:25. > :02:28.So what we find is up to 20 years before they actually had a diagnosis

:02:29. > :02:31.of a neurological disorder, the fractal content

:02:32. > :02:34.within their paintings had started to decrease.

:02:35. > :02:39.The artist Willem de Kooning was diagnosed with Alzheimer's

:02:40. > :02:44.The brush stroke patterns seen in his earlier work were different

:02:45. > :02:49.But in the work of Picasso, who died free of any known

:02:50. > :02:52.neurological disease, the patterns remain constant

:02:53. > :02:55.throughout his life, regardless of what he was painting.

:02:56. > :02:58.So is it easier to use oils than watercolours?

:02:59. > :03:03.This won't help diagnose dementia or similar diseases,

:03:04. > :03:08.but it does give a valuable insight into changes that are taking place

:03:09. > :03:10.in the brain years before the illness appears,

:03:11. > :03:21.and so could help answer questions about these devastating conditions.

:04:55. > :05:02.Since he became one of the 6000 members of Wigan Youth Zone,

:05:03. > :05:04.he's throwing himself into the centre's enterprise group,

:05:05. > :05:08.set up two small businesses and found the confidence

:05:09. > :05:14.For Sean, inspiration came in the centre's

:05:15. > :05:19.The 19-year-old was struggling with a variety of problems

:05:20. > :05:23.Since coming here, I've come out of my shell a bit.

:05:24. > :05:27.I started writing new songs, on two songs which I filmed music

:05:28. > :05:31.videos for and have been put up on the Wigan Youth

:05:32. > :05:38.Sport plays a central role in Wigan Youth Zone, too.

:05:39. > :05:40.There's a gym equipped with kit from the London

:05:41. > :05:43.2012 athlete's village, a sports hall which hosts

:05:44. > :05:47.all sorts of activities, a climbing wall, a boxing gym,

:05:48. > :05:53.Once local athlete Jenny Meadows retired from competing,

:05:54. > :06:04.It's ready important that we do keep active.

:06:05. > :06:07.Obviously we are an under active nation at the moment so it's

:06:08. > :06:10.great that sport and physical activity still has a presence here.

:06:11. > :06:16.The centre was founded with ?6 million from local

:06:17. > :06:18.businessmen Dave Whelan and Martin and Bill Ainscott,

:06:19. > :06:20.but it costs ?2 million a year to run.

:06:21. > :06:22.The benefits, though, run deep with school attendance up

:06:23. > :06:25.We have prevented them from entering the criminal justice system.

:06:26. > :06:28.That is down to the engagement of the staff here, there's

:06:29. > :06:31.For these young people, it's truly an opportunity
