:00:00. > :00:00.Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson

:00:00. > :00:11.15-year-old Megan dies from a peanut allergy -

:00:12. > :00:13.it's thought she may have had a severe reaction

:00:14. > :00:16.Her family say their hearts are shattered.

:00:17. > :00:19.Proposals are announced to move Liverpool's Women's Hospital

:00:20. > :00:24.Criticism of HS2's revised route - which comes within a thick crust

:00:25. > :00:37.Pat hangs up her whoppee cushion after 45 years in the business.

:00:38. > :00:41.This side used to be all jokes, so there's was a long counter of it,

:00:42. > :00:43.which was of course was electrified, so you kept forgetting

:00:44. > :00:57.A role model, an inspiration, our princess.

:00:58. > :01:00.That was the moving tribute a family paid today -

:01:01. > :01:04.to a teenage girl from Lancashire who's died from a suspected allergic

:01:05. > :01:14.Our Reporter Andy Gill is in the town for us tonight.

:01:15. > :01:30.Megan Lee lived here with her parents and her younger brother. She

:01:31. > :01:34.was a key member of a theatre group which met at the Civic arts Centre

:01:35. > :01:39.just behind me. It was known that she had a nut allergy, and she

:01:40. > :01:44.became ill after apparently eating food from local takeaway. She died

:01:45. > :01:48.in hospital in Blackburn two days after being admitted. Her parents

:01:49. > :01:49.have issued a statement paying tribute to their daughter. In it

:01:50. > :02:16.they people at Megan's School have also

:02:17. > :02:24.been paying tribute to her today? That's right. This is the school in

:02:25. > :02:29.a written debtor in Accrington. They have set up a tribute to her in the

:02:30. > :02:33.reception area. They also have books of condolence for the pupils to

:02:34. > :02:39.sign. They had a communion service yesterday, the first day back at

:02:40. > :02:43.school, a scheduled service but adapted to pay tribute to Megan.

:02:44. > :02:45.Earlier this afternoon, I spoke to the head there and asked him what

:02:46. > :02:52.A wonderful pupil at our church school, and we miss her terribly.

:02:53. > :02:55.It feels as if a member of our family has left us.

:02:56. > :02:58.She was bright, articulate, somebody of real potential who had

:02:59. > :03:09.thrived and grown during her five years with us.

:03:10. > :03:18.What stages the enquiry into Megan's death at now? Lancashire Police say

:03:19. > :03:25.that she apparently became ill after eating food from a takeaway in the

:03:26. > :03:28.Hyndburn area, not more specific than that. Police are now

:03:29. > :03:32.investigating on behalf of the coroner, and we understand that

:03:33. > :03:36.Lancashire trading standards are also investigating. We're also told

:03:37. > :03:41.that the full results of a postmortem, which has a ready taken

:03:42. > :03:46.place, won't be known for sometime. Andy, thank you very much.

:03:47. > :03:49.The long running row over the future of Liverpool Women Hospital

:03:50. > :03:52.A short list of four options has been drawn up

:03:53. > :03:56.Bosses say they'd like it to move to the site

:03:57. > :03:59.But, protestors say it needs to remain where it is.

:04:00. > :04:03.Our Health Correspondent Gill Dummigan has spent the day there.

:04:04. > :04:05.Young Reuben's not supposed to be here yet -

:04:06. > :04:24.It's been great, a fantastic resource for the community, for

:04:25. > :04:25.Liverpool and the surrounding area. Yeah, it's amazing, brilliant

:04:26. > :04:30.hospital. Those holding it say

:04:31. > :04:33.the current building can't deal with the increasingly complex

:04:34. > :04:35.medical demands here and they're now putting four options out to public

:04:36. > :04:37.consultation: Two involve improving the current site, one of them

:04:38. > :04:40.includes building an adult One would relocate women's

:04:41. > :04:43.and neonatal services to a new building on the site

:04:44. > :04:49.of the Alderhey Children's Hospital And the fourth, option

:04:50. > :04:51.would see a new building on the site of the new

:04:52. > :04:53.Royal Liverpool Hospital. This move to the Royal site

:04:54. > :05:03.is the option the senior clinicians In virtually every other hospital in

:05:04. > :05:09.the UK, if you run into a problem with one of your maternity patients,

:05:10. > :05:12.or somebody having gynaecological treatment, you can simply pick up

:05:13. > :05:15.the phone and another specialist will walk along the corridor and

:05:16. > :05:17.provide you with assistance. That's much more difficult to achieve with

:05:18. > :05:24.a stand-alone hospital. But the suggestion has

:05:25. > :05:26.sparked numerous protests. An online petition has gathered more

:05:27. > :05:28.than 41 thousand signatures. Campaigners were out

:05:29. > :05:36.there again this morning. We want to protect the safe delivery

:05:37. > :05:41.of babies in this city, and we want to protect the dignity of women as

:05:42. > :05:48.they go into medical care. Those two things are the absolute priority,

:05:49. > :05:51.and we call -- and of course we want safety, but one functioning women's

:05:52. > :05:52.hospital in the whole of Britain? The idea we can't afford that is

:05:53. > :05:53.ridiculous. They believe it's actually

:05:54. > :05:55.about saving cash. Even though the move to the Royal

:05:56. > :05:58.would mean a new building, the running costs would be far lower

:05:59. > :06:01.because staff could be And the trust's been

:06:02. > :06:04.told to save ?6 million. But those pushing for the move say

:06:05. > :06:16.it's patient safety driving it. There is a financial problem, but

:06:17. > :06:19.that is not the main reason for us wanting to see change in the way

:06:20. > :06:24.that we deliver those services. We want to see changed and services to

:06:25. > :06:29.make them safer now, but also it about five years', ten years', 20

:06:30. > :06:34.years Mutch down the line. Although those options been published today,

:06:35. > :06:40.it is still officially in draft form. It's actually likely to be

:06:41. > :06:42.June before that consultation begins.

:06:43. > :06:49.This is the year its own will be decided.

:06:50. > :06:52.An investigation's underway into the cause of a large fire

:06:53. > :06:59.this morning at Pilling in Wyre in Lancashire.

:07:00. > :07:02.At it's height 40 firefighters were at the scene at a warehouse

:07:03. > :07:04.on an industrial estate on Taylors Lane.

:07:05. > :07:06.Nearby residents were moved as a precaution.

:07:07. > :07:07.A man's being questioned on suspicion of murder

:07:08. > :07:09.following the death of another man in Oldham.

:07:10. > :07:12.Police were called to Kensington Avenue in Royton just

:07:13. > :07:16.after two o'clock this morning A 28-year-old man was

:07:17. > :07:27.41-year-old in hospital. Watch these next images carefully.

:07:28. > :07:30.Liverpool Crown Court's been shown dashcam footage of car crashing

:07:31. > :07:33.17-year-old Sean Grindle was travelling 45 miles per hour

:07:34. > :07:37.over the speed limit in Bootle last year as he tried to escape police.

:07:38. > :07:39.The court heard he only had a provisional licence.

:07:40. > :07:41.He was given ten months in a young offenders institution,

:07:42. > :07:46.suspended for two years and banned from driving for two years.

:07:47. > :07:48.Almost 1.9 million people visited Chester Zoo last year,

:07:49. > :07:55.The numbers were twelve percent up on 2015 which was already

:07:56. > :08:01.the highest ever in the attraction's 85-year history.

:08:02. > :08:04.For hundreds of people in Cheshire - the prospect that their house

:08:05. > :08:06.will be bulldozed to make way for high speed trains

:08:07. > :08:09.is something they've known about for the last three years.

:08:10. > :08:12.But last November, the HS2 route was changed, so some households

:08:13. > :08:16.in the county found for the first time that they were in the way.

:08:17. > :08:19.Officials have been in the county today to answer questions.

:08:20. > :08:24.Here's our Cheshire Political Reporter Phil McCann:

:08:25. > :08:26.The bread's been rolling off the tracks at Roberts Bakery

:08:27. > :08:30.It's not exactly high speed, but the factory's

:08:31. > :08:37.The HS2 line will pass under this main road next to the Northwich site

:08:38. > :08:40.and go through the car park of this distribution centre.

:08:41. > :08:43.The proposed line through that part of Northwich and this counyrydide

:08:44. > :08:46.just south of it was shifted to here last November

:08:47. > :08:56.It means people living here who thought they wouldn't be

:08:57. > :08:59.affected have had just a few months to digest the fact that their corner

:09:00. > :09:06.People like Gary - he and his neighbours

:09:07. > :09:09.in Billings Green found out late last year they'd be

:09:10. > :09:15.I hoped I would stay here for a long time,

:09:16. > :09:17.and it's not looking like I'll be able to.

:09:18. > :09:20.It's going to be a lot of uncertainty for a number

:09:21. > :09:24.But today was a chance for Gary to get out and find out more.

:09:25. > :09:27.He was invited to this official consultation event, where questions

:09:28. > :09:30.It just confirmed some of the things I already knew, really.

:09:31. > :09:33.There's still a lot of unanswered questions, and part of the problem

:09:34. > :09:37.is there's so much uncertainty and it's going to go on for years.

:09:38. > :09:39.But with so many people newly affected, there

:09:40. > :09:52.I sympathise with people who are affected by the proposals.

:09:53. > :09:54.What we've tried to do is balance the considerations.

:09:55. > :09:56.Obviously we need to have a safe railway, balanced against

:09:57. > :10:02.We believe that what we've now got represents the best balance.

:10:03. > :10:05.Head just south of here to Crewe, though, and there's excitement,

:10:06. > :10:08.because the railway town will be the only HS2 stop between

:10:09. > :10:22.From where the trains will thunder past the bakery at up to 250 mph.

:10:23. > :10:28.Our Political Editor Nina Warhurst is here.

:10:29. > :10:33.You seen a letter today to the Transport Secretary from a group of

:10:34. > :10:38.influential MPs about the funding for the project. That's right. This

:10:39. > :10:43.is a letter from the chairman of the Treasury Select Committee. He is he?

:10:44. > :10:49.He's in charge of scrutinising how the government spends our money. --

:10:50. > :10:52.who is he? It a letter to the Transport Secretary asking for the

:10:53. > :10:56.second time for justification for the forecast of passenger numbers on

:10:57. > :10:59.who is going to travel on HS2. He says he doesn't think that the

:11:00. > :11:03.evidence given about how many people will travel on the service isn't

:11:04. > :11:08.there, and without those numbers, it is scarcely worth the candle, the

:11:09. > :11:12.phrase meaning that the end in no way justifies the means unless they

:11:13. > :11:16.can prove those numbers. The Transport Secretary says that for

:11:17. > :11:20.every ?1 spent on HS2, we'll get ?2 return, but he'll have to work

:11:21. > :11:23.really hard to convince the Treasury Select Committee that it is worth

:11:24. > :11:28.the investment. You will talk to Jeremy Corbyn next week. You want

:11:29. > :11:32.our viewers' help. I am relying on our viewers to come up for questions

:11:33. > :11:38.were Jeremy. You have seen him at Prime Minister's Questions stand up

:11:39. > :11:43.and say that he has a letter from someone local asking about a local

:11:44. > :11:47.issue important to them. I want our viewers to get in touch with us at

:11:48. > :11:51.the e-mail address and give us questions were Jeremy Corbyn. It can

:11:52. > :11:53.be anything, a local issue important to you or a national issue about the

:11:54. > :11:56.Labour Party. Very interesting. We'll wait and see. Thank you very

:11:57. > :11:58.much indeed. Still to come on

:11:59. > :12:00.North West Tonight. Which of the North West's lower

:12:01. > :12:04.league sides will win Just how do you move

:12:05. > :12:07.a two tonne lock gate? We're with the team on a canal

:12:08. > :12:36.near Marple to find out. Chester's biggest production

:12:37. > :12:37.for years is nearing completion. The 40-million pound Storyhouse arts

:12:38. > :12:40.complex replaces the old Odeon The art deco building has been

:12:41. > :12:44.brought back to life - in the largest project

:12:45. > :12:46.of its kind outside London. Our Cheshire reporter

:12:47. > :12:47.Mark Edwardson's has It's a lavish production that's

:12:48. > :12:54.taken four years to to bear fruit. Let me take you backstage. We are

:12:55. > :12:57.celebrating the 1930s here. Taking me back to how it might have looked

:12:58. > :12:58.back in 1936 and still open to to the public.

:12:59. > :13:00.Storyhouse is, in large part, the former Odeon Cinema

:13:01. > :13:03.Two years ago to the day - the old picture house

:13:04. > :13:11.It should have been open for Christmas.

:13:12. > :13:18.We are about three months away from that. It's important to open it

:13:19. > :13:25.well. It's important that we get the team in the building, and they get

:13:26. > :13:26.to play around with it. The council have helped put together the

:13:27. > :13:28.blockbuster budget. That is the original, and in front

:13:29. > :13:52.of that is the new 800 seat theatre. This is our 800 seat theatre. You're

:13:53. > :13:56.on stage at the minute. It's amazing that the city hasn't had a

:13:57. > :13:59.significant culture offer for a long time, but the local authority are

:14:00. > :14:03.capped at that opportunity and made is extraordinary investment.

:14:04. > :14:12.With cinema and a library too - Chester gets back

:14:13. > :14:21.It's a boost to the local region, not just for Chester. It is a boost

:14:22. > :14:24.to the North of England, something that has been severely lacking in

:14:25. > :14:30.the local area over the years. This will be a real coup for Chester. Not

:14:31. > :14:37.long now until productions take to the stage here in the centre of

:14:38. > :14:38.Chester. The first of those is expected in the spring. Tickets are

:14:39. > :14:47.on sale now. That is a spectacular project, isn't

:14:48. > :14:51.it? Let's hope it's a real success when it opens. Another huge project.

:14:52. > :14:54.It's an eye watering task, replacing dozens of ageing lock

:14:55. > :14:56.gates on the region's waterways to make sure the canals

:14:57. > :15:00.The ?43 million project to improve the waterways has reached

:15:01. > :15:03.the Peak Forest Canal in Marple, which was built in the 1790s.

:15:04. > :15:07.Stuart Pollitt went to meet the team keeping our waterways going.

:15:08. > :15:15.Especially one that's part of a 200-year-old structure.

:15:16. > :15:26.Like the whole team he loves his locks.

:15:27. > :15:32.We don't do it for the money, we do it for the fun of the job, really.

:15:33. > :15:35.You wouldn't spend your whole time telling your wife

:15:36. > :15:39.No, no, she was just operating the locks for me.

:15:40. > :15:44.He's trying to defy gravity and keep the water out.

:15:45. > :15:48.The last thing we want to do is have water coming into that lock.

:15:49. > :16:00.If that's what you want to call me, yeah.

:16:01. > :16:02.Well, there's no technical term for it?

:16:03. > :16:05.But they tell me you are an expert in it?

:16:06. > :16:11.At the opposite end of the age range is youngster Billy.

:16:12. > :16:14.How come you're the only one down there, and these are all here?

:16:15. > :16:18.You'll see a bit of daylight in a minute.

:16:19. > :16:27.It's Craig's job to stop that happening.

:16:28. > :16:32.With the help of his trusty figure of eight.

:16:33. > :16:35.If that goes, it's 2.3 tonnes just falling 18 feet.

:16:36. > :16:38.Daunting when you think of it like that.

:16:39. > :16:40.Poor old Billy would be squashed down there!

:16:41. > :16:47.After a morning of heaving and hoisting,

:16:48. > :17:04.Back up at the lock and it's out with the old, in with the new.

:17:05. > :17:07.This new set should last for 25 years.

:17:08. > :17:14.Stuart Pollitt, BBC North West Tonight, Marple.

:17:15. > :17:20.He was Tyne until Stuart shocked and then he fell over! He's a nervous

:17:21. > :17:23.wreck, -- he was fine. Puel Billy. And the lock you saw there will now

:17:24. > :17:26.be drained and in a fortnight's time visitors will be able to walk along

:17:27. > :17:35.the 200-year-old canal floor for one That would be a fantastic walk to

:17:36. > :17:39.do, wouldn't it? A great experience. The things you might find along the

:17:40. > :17:46.bottom. Doesn't bear thinking about. Let us move on to sports.

:17:47. > :17:58.You need to be like Stuart Parker and Matt Edmondson and were jacket!

:17:59. > :18:01.FA Cup this weekend. Get the cliche monitor out. It is the third round

:18:02. > :18:05.of the FA Cup, when the big boys from the Premier League come

:18:06. > :18:13.alongside the lower league teams still left in the competition.

:18:14. > :18:16.We'll look at them in a moment, but tonight's match -

:18:17. > :18:19.live right here on BBC One - sees Manchester City visit West Ham.

:18:20. > :18:22.It'll be an FA Cup debut for Blues boss Pep Guardiola but despite that

:18:23. > :18:24.tough draw against Premier League oppositon, he's already

:18:25. > :18:29.The cup is special because the lower teams can beat the bigger teams.

:18:30. > :18:32.Not just happening in the Premier League,

:18:33. > :18:41.But of course, it's a Premier League game, it's tough.

:18:42. > :18:44.Elsewhere this weekend it's a chance for some of our smaller clubs

:18:45. > :18:46.to reach round four and an even better chance of being paired

:18:47. > :18:51.Here's a look at some of this weekend's matches with more

:18:52. > :19:01.Accrington Stanley have done the usual things this week -

:19:02. > :19:21.Yes, it's hard to wrap the visit of fellow League 2 side Luton town

:19:22. > :19:23.into much cup romance, but the possibility of a date

:19:24. > :19:26.with a Premier League team in round four could be worth

:19:27. > :19:31.It'll give us the platform to make, you know, a lifestyle

:19:32. > :19:36.We can bring in the finances, you know.

:19:37. > :19:38.Certainly, I hope the fans come out in their numbers.

:19:39. > :19:48.And I hope the players respond to that.

:19:49. > :19:51.Our other League 2 teams still in the competition,

:19:52. > :19:52.Blackpool, take on Barnsley from the championship.

:19:53. > :20:00.Blackpool know it's likely to be a lot more difficult than non-league

:20:01. > :20:04.A division higher up the pecking order, neighbours Fleetwood town

:20:05. > :20:05.also face championship opposition, Bristol city.

:20:06. > :20:08.And a stoppage time winner like this one against Shrewsbury

:20:09. > :20:19.These were the fantastic scenes after Barrow AFC beat Bristol Rovers

:20:20. > :20:22.and the National League side have been on a terrific run.

:20:23. > :20:32.Defeat on New Year's Eve was their first since August.

:20:33. > :20:34.But the Bluebirds know League 1 Rochdale is

:20:35. > :20:38.High-flying Dale have five victories in a row, and the manager

:20:39. > :20:42.You're only one fixture or one win away from playing

:20:43. > :20:45.one of the, you know, giants of the English game.

:20:46. > :20:48.That's what every club like ourselves at Barrow

:20:49. > :20:55.are really looking forward to the prospect of achieving.

:20:56. > :20:59.For Bolton Wanderers, it's Premier League opposition

:21:00. > :21:05.Sam Allardyce, who once steered Wanderers into Europe,

:21:06. > :21:10.A tough task for the current Bolton boss.

:21:11. > :21:14.There's no expectations on us, and apart from ourselves

:21:15. > :21:19.But we can go and enjoy the game, and we really look forward

:21:20. > :21:23.to testing ourselves against Premier League opposition.

:21:24. > :21:26.And supporters of all our teams will be hoping that some of that

:21:27. > :21:33.famous FA Cup magic rubs off on their side this weekend.

:21:34. > :21:36.Well tonight's West Ham-Manchester City match is the first of 13 third

:21:37. > :21:41.round ties involving north west clubs.

:21:42. > :21:43.The next is tomorrow lunchtime when holders

:21:44. > :21:45.Manchester United host Reading, now managed by their former

:21:46. > :22:00.The majority are underway at 3pm except for Preston's
