:00:00. > :00:08.Welcome to North West Tonight with Beccy Barr...

:00:09. > :00:13.The NHS crisis - almost half of the region's trusts were on major

:00:14. > :00:15.alert on the same day after New Year.

:00:16. > :00:18.They raised serious concerns about the demands being put on them.

:00:19. > :00:24.Protest at the Port of Liverpool - unions accuse owners Peel

:00:25. > :00:29.There's very little toilet facilities, and, more importantly,

:00:30. > :00:38.Thousands of hens are slaughtered because bird flu fears mean they can

:00:39. > :00:44.We've lost over 12,000 birds that have had to go to slaughter,

:00:45. > :00:47.that would normally be pecking around the garden,

:00:48. > :00:52.It's been heartbreaking for the charity.

:00:53. > :00:55.And I'll have the sport as the eyes of the world focus

:00:56. > :00:59.Merseyside and Manchester's big four go head to head in an

:01:00. > :01:02.all-North-West match-up that will be watched by billions

:01:03. > :01:17.First tonight, more evidence today revealing the pressure

:01:18. > :01:22.New figures from the NHS show that during the first week of this year

:01:23. > :01:26.almost half of the acute trusts in this region flagged up serious

:01:27. > :01:29.concerns about the level of demand being made on them.

:01:30. > :01:32.Two on Merseyside declared a major alert on the same day,

:01:33. > :01:35.meaning patient safety could be at risk.

:01:36. > :01:38.But there was also confusion over the accuracy of the figures.

:01:39. > :01:40.Our chief reporter, Dave Guest is outside

:01:41. > :01:58.But was the situation there during the first week of the New Year?

:01:59. > :02:01.On January the 4th, this hospital declared an Opel four alert,

:02:02. > :02:06.basically, the pressure on services were such that patient safety was

:02:07. > :02:10.being compromised potentially. On that same day, January the 4th,

:02:11. > :02:15.another Merseyside hospital, Southport, declared a similar alert.

:02:16. > :02:22.One stage down from Opel four is Opel three, and that is when the

:02:23. > :02:27.local health care system is compromising patient flow. In

:02:28. > :02:31.planing words, it means there are a too people -- many people in

:02:32. > :02:36.hospital, even though this should be careful as where. The problem is,

:02:37. > :02:40.there isn't another elsewhere for them.

:02:41. > :02:45.The official figures released today were wrong, when they?

:02:46. > :02:52.NHS England initially said another two Merseyside hospitals, Aintree

:02:53. > :02:56.and Alder Hey, had also issued Opel four alert on January the board.

:02:57. > :03:01.This morning, those two hospitals beg to differ, and NHS England

:03:02. > :03:08.admitted the error. Aintree Hospital had been booked on and Opel three

:03:09. > :03:12.alert, still pretty serious, and Alder Hey shouldn't have been on the

:03:13. > :03:17.list at all. Sources the situation where you are

:03:18. > :03:21.today? The hospital makes the point of that

:03:22. > :03:25.these figures are a snapshot in time and change throughout the day to day

:03:26. > :03:29.business. We spoke to a few of the people coming out of here earlier

:03:30. > :03:33.this evening. I noticed a lot of people in the

:03:34. > :03:38.corridor. The dad came in last night, he was in recess at least

:03:39. > :03:45.eight hours, that's when I left. It was the same again today, loads of

:03:46. > :03:49.people in the corridor. All the staff are absolutely

:03:50. > :03:54.fantastic, absolutely brilliant. They're why to death and underpaid.

:03:55. > :03:59.My mum has been in quite awhile, and I think the nurses do a great job.

:04:00. > :04:04.They're under pressure, but that's the NHS at the moment, isn't it?

:04:05. > :04:09.Interesting point that chap at the end made, whatever the label you put

:04:10. > :04:13.on it, whatever type of alert, all hospitals are facing similar

:04:14. > :04:21.pressures at the moment? Let's not forget that, during the

:04:22. > :04:25.first week of 2017, almost half the acute NHS trusts in this region were

:04:26. > :04:28.experiencing pressures cause by pressures on the social care system,

:04:29. > :04:32.which meant their own pace and flows were being affected. It's story we

:04:33. > :04:40.have heard a lot of in recent weeks, and I am sure we will hear more in

:04:41. > :04:41.weeks to come. The Government is making billions of pounds more

:04:42. > :04:43.available to the NHS. Thousands of hens are being

:04:44. > :04:45.slaughtered in the North West because fears over bird flu mean

:04:46. > :04:48.they can no longer roam free. A re-homing charity says

:04:49. > :04:51.many of it's volunteers don't have the space to keep them indoors,

:04:52. > :04:54.after the Government Meanwhile, the National

:04:55. > :04:58.Farmers Union has warned of potential catastrophy

:04:59. > :05:00.for the region's 2500 hens are re-homed at this farm

:05:01. > :05:10.in Rossendale every year. For the last month, is resident had

:05:11. > :05:20.been confined to a shared. You normally would see

:05:21. > :05:22.chickens wandering round. At the moment, we can't do anything,

:05:23. > :05:24.we can't allow them Adele Hall is one of 500

:05:25. > :05:28.British Hen Welfare Trust volunteers who take in birds due

:05:29. > :05:31.to be sent to slaughter. It's had a massive effect, we've

:05:32. > :05:35.been unable to re-home any hens. We've had to cancel our re-homings

:05:36. > :05:38.for January and February. We've lost over 12,000 birds that

:05:39. > :05:41.have had to go to slaughter that would normally, by now,

:05:42. > :05:43.be pecking around our gardens, It's been heartbreaking

:05:44. > :05:46.for the charity. And, of course, the restrictions

:05:47. > :05:48.don't just apply to hens, Meaning these turkeys have been

:05:49. > :05:52.stuck inside this shed Adele's now trying to

:05:53. > :05:56.ensure her birds can get This is the hen run I'm having

:05:57. > :06:02.built, which not everyone can do, they don't have the resources

:06:03. > :06:05.to do this. One of the important thing is he's

:06:06. > :06:10.going to do is put on a roof, something that won't allow droppings

:06:11. > :06:16.to come through on the ground. Which is how it's believed

:06:17. > :06:18.the disease has been spread After cases across Europe, bird flu

:06:19. > :06:22.has been found in North Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Wales

:06:23. > :06:24.in the last month. Our farmers are good

:06:25. > :06:27.at spotting disease, But that doesn't affect

:06:28. > :06:31.the food supply. Our big effort is to

:06:32. > :06:33.reduce limit that affect But the National Farmers Union says

:06:34. > :06:37.the region's free-range egg producers could be badly affected

:06:38. > :06:41.by the restrictions. If it keeps going on for months

:06:42. > :06:44.and months, Trading Standards or the Government could sit

:06:45. > :06:47.there and make it difficult to sell And what would that do to farmers,

:06:48. > :06:50.to free-range farmers? That would be catastrophic,

:06:51. > :06:53.that would be, yes. They've got all the

:06:54. > :06:56.expenses, there's... Just because the birds are sat,

:06:57. > :06:59.doesn't make it any cheaper. In fact, it could possibly make

:07:00. > :07:01.it even slightly more We worry if the restrictions

:07:02. > :07:05.are extended, so we're just keeping our fingers and toes crossed

:07:06. > :07:08.that it all stops at the end of February and we can carry

:07:09. > :07:10.on our work. The Government says it's

:07:11. > :07:13.strengthening its surveillance on the extent of infection

:07:14. > :07:21.in wild birds. Police in Rochdale have launched

:07:22. > :07:24.an investigation after the body of man was found

:07:25. > :07:26.in an alleyway last night. The man - who's believed to be

:07:27. > :07:30.in his 30s - was discovered off His death is being

:07:31. > :07:33.treated as suspicious. The funeral's taken place

:07:34. > :07:35.of a teenager from Lancashire who died from a suspected allergic

:07:36. > :07:40.reaction to a takeaway meal. 15-year-old Megan Lee had eaten food

:07:41. > :07:43.from the Royal Spice takeaway in Oswaldtwistle and died

:07:44. > :07:47.on New Year's Day. Two men have since been

:07:48. > :07:50.arrested and bailed. A suspected paedophile from Bury

:07:51. > :07:53.who was one of Britain's most wanted fugitives has been arrested

:07:54. > :07:57.in France after crashing his car. Stephen Carruthers was wanted

:07:58. > :08:02.by Cumbria Police on suspicion of taking indecent photographs

:08:03. > :08:06.of a child. The region was snowy last night,

:08:07. > :08:09.but it was strong winds and fallen trees that have caused

:08:10. > :08:12.problems on the Isle of Man. Some major roads were blocked

:08:13. > :08:14.and power lines damaged. A driver had to be cut free

:08:15. > :08:17.from this van at St Johns, We'll have some of your weather

:08:18. > :08:24.photos later in the programme. Lorry drivers and dock workers

:08:25. > :08:26.staged a protest at the It comes just weeks

:08:27. > :08:31.after the ?400 million Liverpool2 superport was officially opened -

:08:32. > :08:35.one of the most modern in the world. But union officials say not

:08:36. > :08:39.everybody coming to the facility is being treated the same -

:08:40. > :08:42.particularly lorry drivers collecting cargo who have nowhere

:08:43. > :08:45.to go to the toilet. Earlier, I spoke to Colin

:08:46. > :08:48.Carr, regional officer for the Unite union,

:08:49. > :08:51.and started by asking him what conditions are

:08:52. > :08:54.like for dock workers. Because they have no

:08:55. > :08:59.real canteen facilities. There's a canteen there,

:09:00. > :09:04.but it's in very poor disrepair. Very little toilet facilities,

:09:05. > :09:10.and, more importantly, Tell me, what are conditions

:09:11. > :09:16.like for drivers that Ordinarily, they're OK,

:09:17. > :09:21.because you're only 20 minutes in the port,

:09:22. > :09:24.but when things go wrong and they have to stack up

:09:25. > :09:28.and park along Regent Road which is a residential area,

:09:29. > :09:33.they have no facilities whatsoever. Peel say they have

:09:34. > :09:49.invested ?1 million --?0.25 million in refurbishing

:09:50. > :09:51.an amenities block. I asked my members about this

:09:52. > :09:55.amenity, and there is no such There may well be an amenities such

:09:56. > :09:59.as that but it has been invested in on the Liverpool2 dock area,

:10:00. > :10:02.the new dock area with the bigger cranes, but our members,

:10:03. > :10:05.the 350 workers that I represent, are not working on that

:10:06. > :10:08.part of the port. Peel's other point is that there

:10:09. > :10:12.are truckstops which offer The nearest safe and secure parking

:10:13. > :10:25.area for a lorry driver from the Port of Liverpool

:10:26. > :10:29.is the service station on the M62. Peel bring them here,

:10:30. > :10:33.Peel Port has the authority, they're the port authority

:10:34. > :10:36.and harbour masters, they have responsibility

:10:37. > :10:45.for what goes on in around the dock, Look, we're very, very happy

:10:46. > :10:48.with Peel being in Liverpool, we're happy that they prosper

:10:49. > :10:51.and have built and invested in the port, but they can't do that

:10:52. > :10:55.on the backs of less than their welfare facilities

:10:56. > :11:00.and abrogating their responsibility to lorry drivers who provide that

:11:01. > :11:07.a vital link in their chain. Helping others get

:11:08. > :11:12.a diagnosis sooner - the cancer champions heading out

:11:13. > :11:17.into the community. And meet the new king

:11:18. > :11:20.of Rwanda - he lives in a terraced house

:11:21. > :11:36.in Sale. Amazing story!

:11:37. > :11:42.We all know that what's going on in your life in general can affect your

:11:43. > :11:46.health. A pioneering scheme has been running an Oldham which assigns

:11:47. > :11:50.people committee nurses with good results.

:11:51. > :11:56.The scheme is being rolled out across Gator Manchester.

:11:57. > :12:01.Stacey had relationship problems, she was struggling with debt,

:12:02. > :12:07.bringing up three young children. It was all starting to take its toll.

:12:08. > :12:12.My anxiety was ridiculous, couldn't go to the shop without it flaring

:12:13. > :12:17.up. I wasn't sleeping. Every month I would go to the Dr, get

:12:18. > :12:23.prescriptions for anti-parent -- added to presence.

:12:24. > :12:27.And then her GP prescribed route. She sorted out many other problems,

:12:28. > :12:33.got her in your house, helped redecorate. Now Stacey's life is

:12:34. > :12:39.transformed. She gave me the help I needed to get

:12:40. > :12:44.my life back on its feet. Focused care works on the basis that

:12:45. > :12:48.people who have problems with housing, benefits relationships

:12:49. > :12:53.often suffer from copper two health as a result. They get south -- they

:12:54. > :12:56.get stressed, don't eat properly, and did turn to drink or drugs. The

:12:57. > :13:01.only way to make them healthier is to tackle this root causes will

:13:02. > :13:06.stop. Our role is to help people, sort out

:13:07. > :13:12.their debts, help them sort out their benefits. Help them with their

:13:13. > :13:16.relationships, make lots of referrals, and when they're up and

:13:17. > :13:20.standing, if they fall down again, we help them up again.

:13:21. > :13:24.Stuart needs help with this housing, and with negotiating benefits to

:13:25. > :13:30.help pay for his carers. She's just done everything, from

:13:31. > :13:37.helping me with forms, to confronting the housing, the lot.

:13:38. > :13:40.She's really been a rock for me. In the five years the scheme has

:13:41. > :13:45.been running, GPs here say the difference is been impressive.

:13:46. > :13:49.The people have started attending for Smithers, looking after their

:13:50. > :13:56.long-term conditions. We were stunned, because there is two years

:13:57. > :14:02.of apparatus, because people started using primary care. -- their A use

:14:03. > :14:05.at rated. The scheme will be rolled across

:14:06. > :14:18.Greater Manchester in the coming months. I knew initiative was

:14:19. > :14:22.launched today to help people get an early diagnosis and cancer.

:14:23. > :14:24.The project was launched in Greater Manchester today,

:14:25. > :14:25.asking survivors to become cancer champions.

:14:26. > :14:29.He came in earlier with one of the champions, Gilbert Morgan.

:14:30. > :14:31.We asked Gilbert why he got involved.

:14:32. > :14:34.Well, for me, because I've got a personal journey,

:14:35. > :14:45.I was caught it early and had an operation,

:14:46. > :14:49.But also, my father had prostate cancer as well, but I never knew

:14:50. > :14:53.This is a big thing in the black community, the elder generation

:14:54. > :14:59.It's something that men find quite difficult to talk about,

:15:00. > :15:04.I think it's men across the board don't talk about medical issues,

:15:05. > :15:06.especially when it concerns their private parts.

:15:07. > :15:09.What do you think having cancer champions can do to ease that issue,

:15:10. > :15:14.Right, if I see a friend, like yourself, I'd say,

:15:15. > :15:20.I say, listen, all it takes is a few seconds,

:15:21. > :15:25.Because most men assume it's the old-fashioned way.

:15:26. > :15:30.It's women too, but what you need is people like Gilbert

:15:31. > :15:33.who are prepared to put themselves out there and do it?

:15:34. > :15:36.Gilbert's such a fantastic example, you can see that straightaway.

:15:37. > :15:38.We're saying today, in launching this

:15:39. > :15:39.Greater Manchester Cancer Champion movement,

:15:40. > :15:41.that we want even more people to get involved.

:15:42. > :15:44.It's really easy to become a cancer champion, to speak up

:15:45. > :15:46.where you are and talk to your friends and family.

:15:47. > :15:48.And it's not just about diagnosis, is it?

:15:49. > :15:52.Just explain to us the message you're trying to get out.

:15:53. > :15:54.Absolutely, this is really, really focused on prevention.

:15:55. > :15:56.Because four in ten cancers, we know, can be prevented.

:15:57. > :16:00.So we want to get there before we have to deal with treatment.

:16:01. > :16:02.That's easy lifestyle changes, things like your

:16:03. > :16:08.Obviously, cutting back on smoking and giving it up.

:16:09. > :16:14.Some of these things are starting to get more awareness,

:16:15. > :16:18.And we want people like Gilbert, who are brilliant at engaging,

:16:19. > :16:21.on the street, in the barbers, in the pub with their friends,

:16:22. > :16:24.with their family, getting those messages across so we can prevent

:16:25. > :16:31.cancer and make sure we improve the treatment of cancer too.

:16:32. > :16:36.To be quite honest with you, I'm 52 this year,

:16:37. > :16:43.I'm very, very lucky, because I caught mine so early.

:16:44. > :16:46.If they catch it at different stages, you end up

:16:47. > :16:52.either being impotent, incontinent...death.

:16:53. > :16:54.We wish you well, and good luck with the project.

:16:55. > :17:14.I'd like to feel 35 again! Wouldn't we all!

:17:15. > :17:17.You always talk to people about your experiences, if you've been ill,

:17:18. > :17:25.trite A1(M). Anything that helps people to

:17:26. > :17:32.communicate, custody stigmatised. We're sitting on the fence here?

:17:33. > :17:40.Very much, definitely. Big weekend? Manchester United side,

:17:41. > :17:43.or is it Merseyside and Manchester? I'll leave that to you.

:17:44. > :17:45.Yes, Everton/City on Sunday lunchtime at Goodison and then

:17:46. > :17:51.Of course, the rivalry between our two biggest cities

:17:52. > :17:55.is well known, and whether they're Blue or Red, it's all part of those

:17:56. > :18:00.neverending arguments about which is better.

:18:01. > :18:03.And even though the managers might be from all around Europe -

:18:04. > :18:05.the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Germany - they will have

:18:06. > :18:08.been left in no doubt just how important it is to get one over

:18:09. > :18:21.on the city at the other end of the East Lancs Road.

:18:22. > :18:36.Nice pastor Lukaku, Lukaku! It is a special game.

:18:37. > :18:49.Aguero puts it in! Usual exuberance and space. Matter,

:18:50. > :18:57.one nil! Everybody wants this dealing,

:18:58. > :19:05.everybody wants this game. Good run this, to wrap it up... !

:19:06. > :19:13.Never looked like missing! Gives game away against City, if we

:19:14. > :19:18.play with that aggression, and pressing, we can make it very

:19:19. > :19:22.difficult. Raheem Sterling once more, up

:19:23. > :19:24.against stones this time. Kolarov on the overlap, and Kolarov to finish

:19:25. > :19:48.it off. It's always in that situation, how

:19:49. > :19:55.much quality you have. Young wheeze it, 1-0! Another one

:19:56. > :20:03.picked up. I have been here for two months, and

:20:04. > :20:07.I understand, step-by-step, as I mentioned it is a good rivalry,

:20:08. > :20:16.because I was feel that rivalry. It's very good thing for football

:20:17. > :20:22.clubs. Oh, what a goal! That as a wonder

:20:23. > :20:29.strike from Christian Benteke! That's what he can do. Out of the

:20:30. > :20:42.blue. Obviously, it's very, very important

:20:43. > :20:45.that we are really ready. There's no time for race voices if you miss a

:20:46. > :20:53.pass, you just need to be ready again the next time.

:20:54. > :20:55.All the best coverage of course of those matches on BBC

:20:56. > :20:59.Now United have turned down an undisclosed bid for winger

:21:00. > :21:02.Memphis Depay from Lyon, but a move to France remains a distinct

:21:03. > :21:05.Lyon coach Bruno Genesio has described the Dutchman

:21:06. > :21:07.as his "number one priority" during the January transfer window

:21:08. > :21:12.Depay joined United from PSV Eindhoven for ?31m in 2015,

:21:13. > :21:18.but hasn't started a Premier League game under Jose Mourinho.

:21:19. > :21:28.Burnley boss Sean Dyche says the club will continue to operate

:21:29. > :21:31.in the same manner as they recorded the fifth highest profit in Europe

:21:32. > :21:34.The Clarets reported a net profit of 40m euros

:21:35. > :21:37.in the year they were relegated from the Premier League,
