:00:07. > :00:08.Good evening, welcome to North West Tonight

:00:09. > :00:09.with Annabel Tiffin and Roger Johnson.

:00:10. > :00:13.Parents and teachers celebrate a coup against the head

:00:14. > :00:20.Hours later, the council shut it down.

:00:21. > :00:22.The council says it acted to safeguard children,

:00:23. > :00:28.Tributes to the veteran Manchester MP Sir Gerald Kaufman,

:00:29. > :00:34.Anger after claims hunt hounds pursued a fox through gardens

:00:35. > :00:41.And there was literally hound after hound, 15-20 hounds,

:00:42. > :00:46.running down our driveway, and bolted through the gate there.

:00:47. > :00:51.The big Brexit balancing act - we ask what will it

:00:52. > :00:57.They told us we couldn't have crooked cucumbers, crooked bananas.

:00:58. > :01:19.A top-performing primary school was closed down

:01:20. > :01:24.indefinitely this afternoon after a mutiny by parents and staff.

:01:25. > :01:26.They were filmed drinking in the school, singing

:01:27. > :01:29.football-style chants about the headteacher.

:01:30. > :01:32.Bollin Primary School is in Bowdon - one of the region's

:01:33. > :01:40.In the past week, the tensions between staff, parents and the head

:01:41. > :01:42.have erupted into strike action and demonstrations.

:01:43. > :01:57.Party time for parents and teachers. Celebrating, they thought, the

:01:58. > :02:04.departure of their school's heads, Michelle Brindle, last Friday.

:02:05. > :02:08.THEY chant Except, the council has confirmed,

:02:09. > :02:11.Mrs Brindle hasn't been suspended or sacked. This is a school where

:02:12. > :02:16.parents, staff and even governors are divided about the head teacher.

:02:17. > :02:21.On Thursday, parents protested and staff went on strike about the way

:02:22. > :02:24.the school is being run. Today, it was closed. Parents unsure when

:02:25. > :02:29.their children will be attending again. This mother has sympathy with

:02:30. > :02:35.the head teacher. It's terrible situation for us all.

:02:36. > :02:39.My son is suffering now, we're all suffering now. It's affecting

:02:40. > :02:43.absolutely everybody, because of a drunken party.

:02:44. > :02:47.The council said it had to shut the school to safeguard peoples.

:02:48. > :02:53.We plan to reopen the school as soon as possible.

:02:54. > :02:57.Is any time school? Days, weeks? It is unwise to put a time limit on

:02:58. > :03:03.it, but want to see it happen as soon as possible. We have seen today

:03:04. > :03:11.alike are senior leadership capacity in the school, which we needed to

:03:12. > :03:17.justify the action we're taken. The NUT has told us there has been

:03:18. > :03:20.too much richer on staff and at oppressive and punitive regime.

:03:21. > :03:24.Others disagree with that, and Mrs Brindle's has previously defended

:03:25. > :03:29.her leadership, saying she is 100 persons committed. It is clear from

:03:30. > :03:33.these pictures that this is a divided school.

:03:34. > :03:35.He's been described as an iconic and irascible figure,

:03:36. > :03:37.a brilliant speaker and compelling writer.

:03:38. > :03:39.They were just some of the words used today

:03:40. > :03:41.to describe the veteran Manchester MP Sir Gerald Kaufman,

:03:42. > :03:49.He was seen by many as a dedicated constituency MP, but was never shy

:03:50. > :03:56.Our chief reporter Dave Guest looks back at his life.

:03:57. > :03:59.He was a politician who believed in plain speaking,

:04:00. > :04:04.I'm ready to justify that to my inner-city constituents

:04:05. > :04:07.on the basis that you're running this thing competently

:04:08. > :04:16.I found him to be an amazing member of Parliament, who was so focused

:04:17. > :04:22.He was always there for his constituents.

:04:23. > :04:26.Here, sharing his passion for ice cream with the BBC's

:04:27. > :04:34.And I said, how ha an ice cream parlour suddenly arisen

:04:35. > :04:37.in my constituency without me knowing about it?

:04:38. > :04:42.Born in Leeds, he was the son of Polish Jewish immigrants.

:04:43. > :04:46.He became the MP for Gorton in 1983, despite having described his own

:04:47. > :04:49.party's manifesto for that election as

:04:50. > :04:53."the longest suicide note in history."

:04:54. > :04:57.He went on to serve this place for the rest of his life.

:04:58. > :05:01.And certainly, people around here knew who their local MP was.

:05:02. > :05:05.He would just try his best to listen to us and see what he could do

:05:06. > :05:10.I went him on a number of issues, and he always helped me.

:05:11. > :05:14.His Jewish faith didn't prevent him from speaking out against an Israeli

:05:15. > :05:17.administration who he derided for their treatment

:05:18. > :05:27.It is time to remind Sharon that the Star of David belongs

:05:28. > :05:29.to all Jews, and not to his repulsive Government.

:05:30. > :05:32.I disagreed with him vehemently on that, but I respected

:05:33. > :05:33.the sincerity and integrity of his views.

:05:34. > :05:39.In 2015, as the longest continually serving MP,

:05:40. > :05:41.Sir Gerald became the father of the House, and today,

:05:42. > :05:46.both sides of that House paid tribute to him.

:05:47. > :05:48.In Manchester, meanwhile, books of condolence were opened,

:05:49. > :05:51.and the flag at the Town Hall flew at half-mast.

:05:52. > :05:54.A rare honour, but one said to reflect his stature as a great

:05:55. > :06:04.For many years, Greater Manchester's Interim Mayor - Tony Lloyd -

:06:05. > :06:08.served as an MP in the neighbouring constituency to Sir Gerald Kaufman.

:06:09. > :06:12.Earlier, I asked him how he'd be remembered.

:06:13. > :06:15.Gerald was a very good friend, first of all.

:06:16. > :06:21.And as a constituency MP, was probably as good as I met.

:06:22. > :06:27.Not really a political bruiser, far too subtle to be a bruiser.

:06:28. > :06:31.He ripped people apart with the rapier of his tongue,

:06:32. > :06:34.and to those who were on the receiving end, very often

:06:35. > :06:41.Yes, I heard you refer to him as waspish earlier on,

:06:42. > :06:47.I want to deny that it was waspish, it was the complete wasp.

:06:48. > :06:54.I remember going to a by-election one time to campaign for a person

:06:55. > :06:56.who will remain nameless, but wasn't very popular.

:06:57. > :06:59.And Gerald said to me, "You know, Tony, it is sometimes necessary

:07:00. > :07:02."to be at the scene of the crime in order to have an alibi."

:07:03. > :07:06.When Gerald went for things, it wasn't half-hearted,

:07:07. > :07:09.and I think he would have been embarrassed to be waspish.

:07:10. > :07:15.He famously came up with that saying in 1983,

:07:16. > :07:18.when Michael Foot was leading Labour into the election,

:07:19. > :07:20.that the manifesto they put forward was the longest

:07:21. > :07:26.I guess that shows that sharp mind and ability to understand what,

:07:27. > :07:28.politically, played well and what didn't?

:07:29. > :07:32.Gerald could sum up things very, very well.

:07:33. > :07:36.And that particular phrase will live in political history.

:07:37. > :07:38.Many other things I can remember Gerald saying.

:07:39. > :07:43.One time, we were in Parliament, he said to me, "Always remember

:07:44. > :07:49."the politician's creed, never kick a man until he's down."

:07:50. > :07:52.It summed up Gerald as the political heavyweight, but,

:07:53. > :07:57.actually in the end, in a funny way, probably belied the real Gerald,

:07:58. > :07:59.who was very decent man, a very principled man

:08:00. > :08:09.Police are continuing to appeal for information after a

:08:10. > :08:11.man was left with serious stab wounds in a van

:08:12. > :08:16.The 21-year-old man was found at Aintree Hospital early

:08:17. > :08:20.yesterday morning in a vehicle with blacked-out windows.

:08:21. > :08:23.Manchester-born film producer Joanna Natasegara is celebrating

:08:24. > :08:25.after winning the Oscar for Best Documentary

:08:26. > :08:31.Her film focused on the work of the White Helmets,

:08:32. > :08:35.a group of volunteer rescue workers who risk their lives to rescue

:08:36. > :08:50.She definitely won it, didn't she? She definitely won it.

:08:51. > :08:52.Police and the RSPCA are investigating

:08:53. > :08:54.after residents say a pack of fox hounds rampaged through

:08:55. > :08:56.their Cheshire housing estate during a hunt.

:08:57. > :08:58.Neighbours on Penningtons Lane in Macclesfield say the hounds raced

:08:59. > :09:01.through gardens chasing a fox, which was then found dead.

:09:02. > :09:03.Their local councillor is now asking for the issue to be

:09:04. > :09:15.It was literally hounded after hounds, 15-20 hounds running down

:09:16. > :09:18.our driveway. Edwina and Kevin judge Bevan a quiet

:09:19. > :09:23.street, nothing much happens here. On Saturday, at that all changed.

:09:24. > :09:27.Dozens of foxhounds burst into their garden, chasing a fleeing fogs,

:09:28. > :09:32.accompanied by massed men and women on quad bikes as well as huntsmen.

:09:33. > :09:36.Neighbours were terrified. There were dogs flying in all

:09:37. > :09:41.directions trying to get to the fox. The fox had gone to the back of the

:09:42. > :09:45.garden at this point. Via tad small animals, pets, it even

:09:46. > :09:51.children in the garden, anything could have happened. -- if had had.

:09:52. > :09:55.It was terrifying, all full. Wednesday she came out of her house

:09:56. > :09:58.to a scene pandemonium. There were cars everywhere, the

:09:59. > :10:04.police had to block the street of. There were people trying to come up

:10:05. > :10:08.the road, down the road. It was just chaos, absolute chaos.

:10:09. > :10:12.Edwina and Kevin Asay the dogs tore into the box. Neighbours claim a

:10:13. > :10:17.woman tried to conceal it in her coat, claiming she was pregnant, but

:10:18. > :10:21.it felt to the floor. Hunting with dogs is illegal. We've seen pictures

:10:22. > :10:25.of the dead animal, but decided it was too graphic to show. Police say

:10:26. > :10:30.they are taking the allegations seriously and are investigating with

:10:31. > :10:33.the RSPCA. This is a quiet, residential neighbourhood full of

:10:34. > :10:39.young children, elderly people, family pets. That's what's worried

:10:40. > :10:42.and upset local people so much. The local council now wants this issue

:10:43. > :10:47.raised in Parliament. What happened on Saturday is

:10:48. > :10:51.absolutely outrageous, unacceptable. There's a lot of land, a few

:10:52. > :10:53.farmers, and not one of us were informed of the hunts that was to

:10:54. > :11:01.take place. The cherished roster -- cherished --

:11:02. > :11:05.Cheshire Forest and has apologised, residents say they want urgent

:11:06. > :11:08.action to make sure Saturday's drama never happened again.

:11:09. > :11:10.Recycling rates for household rubbish are going down

:11:11. > :11:12.rather than up in parts of the North West.

:11:13. > :11:15.That's according to an investigation by the BBC's Inside Out programme.

:11:16. > :11:19.Figures show only a third of authorities in the region have

:11:20. > :11:27.recorded a rise in recycling rates, despite efforts to meet targets.

:11:28. > :11:31.Liverpool are so proud of their purple bins,

:11:32. > :11:35.you can even buy a miniature version from the city's souvenir shops.

:11:36. > :11:39.If you live in Blackpool, you get a seagull sack, to protect

:11:40. > :11:44.But where you live doesn't just determine what colour your bin

:11:45. > :11:48.is and how big it is, what you can put in it and how

:11:49. > :11:50.often it empties varies form council to council.

:11:51. > :11:52.It seems that everyone is doing the basics -

:11:53. > :11:59.But some councils are now charging to take away your garden waste.

:12:00. > :12:02.Food waste, not every council is dealing with that.

:12:03. > :12:06.When it comes a plastic, this is where gets really tricky.

:12:07. > :12:09.If you eat a yoghurt, these pots can only be recycled

:12:10. > :12:12.if you live in Cheshire East, Cheshire West, Warrington, Wigan,

:12:13. > :12:16.Hyndburn, Blackburn, South Lakeland and Barrow.

:12:17. > :12:22.Government targets, set out by the EU, say we have to recycle

:12:23. > :12:30.But, in figures obtained by Inside Out, only seven of our 35

:12:31. > :12:37.local authorities met this target by last April.

:12:38. > :12:40.Cheshire West and Chester did the best, recycling 60% of its waste.

:12:41. > :12:41.Joint-worst were Liverpool and Hyndburn councils,

:12:42. > :12:48.So why are we getting worse at recycling household waste?

:12:49. > :12:51.It's very difficult have a national conversation about what we should

:12:52. > :12:58.recycle and what should be recycled when everyone is doing

:12:59. > :13:02.Rubbish put in recycling bins in Greater Manchester ends up

:13:03. > :13:04.in this processing plant, and they're seeing first-hand

:13:05. > :13:09.We've been here about three minutes, I've seen a Christmas

:13:10. > :13:13.There are a certain amount of people who just get a little confused,

:13:14. > :13:15.but there are people who just don't want to bother.

:13:16. > :13:17.Maybe they don't see that there's any consequence

:13:18. > :13:24.So check your council's website to see what you can and can't recycle.

:13:25. > :13:38.And remember, right bin, right thing.

:13:39. > :13:41.It's always a topic that gets everyone talking.

:13:42. > :13:44.And you can see more on that in Inside Out North West,

:13:45. > :13:47.The people have voted, the MPs have voted.

:13:48. > :13:50.Now we await the triggering of Article 50, which will start

:13:51. > :13:52.the process of Britain leaving the EU.

:13:53. > :13:55.The road ahead is unclear, because no one's done it before.

:13:56. > :13:58.This week our social affairs correspondent Clare Fallon has

:13:59. > :14:02.borrowed a caravan and is on a Big Brexit Tour of the region.

:14:03. > :14:05.We start in a place where they say they're

:14:06. > :14:09.experiencing a Brexit bounce - Blackpool.

:14:10. > :14:18.MUSIC: Around The World by Daft Punk

:14:19. > :14:22.As Brexit Britain gets ready to leave the European Union, this week,

:14:23. > :14:46.Over the next five nights, we'll stop off in five places to find out

:14:47. > :14:52.how people feel about Brexit. First stop is the region's Brexit capital,

:14:53. > :14:59.Blackpool. Where more about it to lead the EU than anywhere else in

:15:00. > :15:03.the North West. In each place we stop, we'll be asking people what

:15:04. > :15:08.they want from the Brexit deal, how they see pros except Britain, and

:15:09. > :15:13.we'll be inviting them into Norwest Road caravan to talk to them about

:15:14. > :15:21.their Brexit hopes and fears. -- into our caravan.

:15:22. > :15:23.It's lovely, isn't it Aids we need to be independent and get back what

:15:24. > :15:26.we've lost. Why do think so many people voted to

:15:27. > :15:31.leave? At the great all voted immigration.

:15:32. > :15:35.It was about immigration or anything, just that the poverty

:15:36. > :15:40.level in England has been quite shocking, and to think how much

:15:41. > :15:45.money we sent abroad. They told us we couldn't have

:15:46. > :15:54.crooked cucumbers, crooked bananas, the eggs were dead is wrong. We

:15:55. > :15:58.should be told, we're independent. Not only did Blackpool vote

:15:59. > :16:01.overwhelmingly to break free from the European Union, there are people

:16:02. > :16:07.here predicting this town will be a Brexit winner.

:16:08. > :16:10.We notice, almost as soon as Brexit happens, I think it was a

:16:11. > :16:17.combination of the weakening pound, maybe a view fears and concerns over

:16:18. > :16:21.travelling abroad, but between those two issues, we definitely saw a

:16:22. > :16:28.Brexit pounds last summer. What Blackpool lacks in each

:16:29. > :16:36.year-round son, Ed melts up for an knife jugglers up ladders. Plus,

:16:37. > :16:40.there's this... Right now, it's the low season at the pleasure Beach.

:16:41. > :16:45.This lot are only two about the site's history. Across this park,

:16:46. > :16:50.they are getting ready for the future and a new ride. They're

:16:51. > :16:54.buying it from Germany, were you don't get as much roller-coaster for

:16:55. > :17:00.your pound at the moment. That outsiders, it's costing us a

:17:01. > :17:05.lot more money to install this ride for next year. That wasn't so good,

:17:06. > :17:07.we'll whether that one and hopefully get through it. Hopefully the

:17:08. > :17:13.increase in visitor numbers this year will help us get through that.

:17:14. > :17:19.As with the Blackpool, and town were most voted to leave the EU, many are

:17:20. > :17:22.predicting a brighter future. But in other places, not everyone is

:17:23. > :17:30.heading off into the sunset with such optimism.

:17:31. > :17:32.It was like caravan karaoke, wasn't it?

:17:33. > :17:35.And tomorrow night, Clare and her caravan will continue

:17:36. > :17:37.on our Big Brexit Tour and travel from Blackpool to Liverpool,

:17:38. > :17:40.where there was a Remain vote, to find out how people

:17:41. > :17:45.Now sport with Richard, and we'll be looking

:17:46. > :17:48.at Manchester United's League Cup celebrations in a moment,

:17:49. > :17:55.but first, one of Everton's greats has passed away?

:17:56. > :17:58.Yes, Alex Young, who's died at the age of of 80.

:17:59. > :18:02.But quite simply he was one of the most idolised

:18:03. > :18:06.The greatest ever Evertonian, in the eyes of many.

:18:07. > :18:09.The Goodison faithful took the Scotsman to their hearts

:18:10. > :18:12.in the 60s and the fact he was nicknamed The Golden Vision

:18:13. > :18:16.He was a very stylish player who typified that great team.

:18:17. > :18:21.He won the League title in 62-63 and the FA Cup in 1966, making

:18:22. > :18:24.a total of 273 appearances in all for Everton,

:18:25. > :18:30.He had a goal disallowed in that Cup final in 66,

:18:31. > :18:33.but still played a major part as his side came back

:18:34. > :18:38.from 3-2 down against Sheffield Wednesday to win 3-2.

:18:39. > :18:41.Alex, who has a suite named in his honour at Goodison Park,

:18:42. > :18:42.passed away in hospital near Edinburgh after

:18:43. > :18:49.Manchester United fans don't need to reminding Eric Cantona's

:18:50. > :18:54.A maverick match-winner, the same description some are now

:18:55. > :19:00.The Swede scored twice as United beat Southampton 3-2

:19:01. > :19:03.in yesterday's League Cup Final, securing Jose Mourinho's first

:19:04. > :19:08.But it was his definitely Zlatan who stole the Wembley show.

:19:09. > :19:15.Another piece of silverware for the Manchester United cabinet.

:19:16. > :19:22.Inspired by a player who, at 35, still has the golden touch.

:19:23. > :19:28.Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored twice to make it an astonishing 32

:19:29. > :19:35.In terms of influence, does it feel similar to Eric Cantona?

:19:36. > :19:38.He has that arrogance and his professional

:19:39. > :19:44.People like him are gifted, you can't teach something like that.

:19:45. > :19:46.I think he cares, I think he's trying.

:19:47. > :19:52.After Ibrahimovic's opener, United doubled their lead.

:19:53. > :19:58.But Southampton, who wrongly had a goal chalked off,

:19:59. > :20:06.Manolo Gabbiadini with both goals as the Saints drew level at 2-2.

:20:07. > :20:11.But United's big Swedish striker doesn't like playing second fiddle.

:20:12. > :20:14.And he reacted first to a cross into the box to emphatically

:20:15. > :20:20.A performance that prompted his manager to say that United fans

:20:21. > :20:24.should camp out on Zlantan's doorstep to convince him to stay

:20:25. > :20:33.United fans can go to the door of his house and stay there,

:20:34. > :20:41.This is why I came, I came to win, and I'm winning.

:20:42. > :20:44.Jose Mourinho is the only Manchester United manager to win

:20:45. > :20:48.a major trophy in his first season at Old Trafford.

:20:49. > :20:52.Many United fans think that more are sure to follow.

:20:53. > :20:56.Ferguson took a long time to win a trophy, and then it came.

:20:57. > :20:59.I think it's very important to show that he can do it.

:21:00. > :21:02.And as for where the matchwinner is going to put his medal?

:21:03. > :21:11.And not many people would be surprised if he inspires his

:21:12. > :21:19.team-mates to win a couple more before he calls it a day.

:25:07. > :25:15.Aw, just lovely! We had a little red Square at last

:25:16. > :25:19.week, it's like country file here! The weather is changeable, changing

:25:20. > :25:23.to direction you may not like. It started last week very mild, then

:25:24. > :25:27.turned windy. Very wet through the weekend, very cold from here on.

:25:28. > :25:32.That's the trend for the next few days. Temperatures falling away.

:25:33. > :25:37.Blackpool, doesn't look like there's a care in the world there, but it's

:25:50. > :25:55.It is all about the change in wind direction. The air coming towards

:25:56. > :26:00.us, very cold, this is how it stays from Friday, Saturday, maybe even

:26:01. > :26:03.Sunday as well. We'll have to get used to it, and weather systems

:26:04. > :26:07.coming through as well. As a hugger to the cold air, there is snow in a

:26:08. > :26:12.forecast through the next few days. Parts have seen snow already,

:26:13. > :26:16.Liverpool earlier today, over the Pennines, a light covering in

:26:17. > :26:20.places. That will continue through the night. The usual suspect seeing

:26:21. > :26:25.a couple of centimetres falling, nothing an usual. Some places may

:26:26. > :26:29.see a flake of floating past. Don't think it will sit on the ground at

:26:30. > :26:33.lower levels, but my great keeps coming into the early hours of the

:26:34. > :26:40.morning, and the cold air descending. Tonight, towns and

:26:41. > :26:47.cities around plus 1 degrees. Rural areas will see lower temperatures.

:26:48. > :26:51.You may see some sunshine in the morning, again showers coming in, as

:26:52. > :26:57.the bumper to the cold air, wintry NHL. If you don't see snow showers,

:26:58. > :27:03.you will see rain. Merging for a longer spell of rain, not a nice

:27:04. > :27:07.day, temperatures around 7 degrees. But the sun is up for 7am, and that

:27:08. > :27:11.is a big thing. I looked at my calendar and Solway

:27:12. > :27:14.are heading in the last couple of weeks before the clocks go forward.

:27:15. > :27:20.This is the last bit of winter direction.

:27:22. > :27:55.See you later! To be in the Lords,

:27:56. > :27:57.you have to be punctual... literally have to slam

:27:58. > :28:01.the door in somebody's face. What right do they have

:28:02. > :28:05.to tell ME about my fashion sense. Can you now control your

:28:06. > :28:11.bad language? Yes, I will. Otherwise you'll be,

:28:12. > :28:14.you know, drummed out. To win on something

:28:15. > :28:19.as important as this A unique opportunity

:28:20. > :28:22.to meet the Lords.
