:00:00. > :00:00.That's all from the BBC News at Six, so it's goodbye from me,

:00:08. > :00:12.Gas engineers found no leak - 12 hours before this.
:00:13. > :00:15.So what caused the weekend Wirral explosion?
:00:16. > :00:18.Lots of people screaming, lots of people shouting,
:00:19. > :00:22.I ran to the corner of the estate and I said, "What's
:00:23. > :00:24.happened?" and they pointed to a huge

:01:03. > :01:04.And what would you do for your best friend?
:01:05. > :01:08.How Helen has changed Andy's life forever.
:01:09. > :01:11.Andy's got kidney disease and needs a transplant and, because I'm able
:01:12. > :01:27.and I'm fit, I'm donating my kidney to him today.
:01:28. > :01:29.Police are investigating the huge gas explosion in Wirral
:01:30. > :01:35.Dozens of people were hurt and a building which housed a dance
:01:36. > :01:39.school was obliterated by the blast in New Ferry on Saturday night.
:01:40. > :01:42.National Grid have confirmed they'd received reports of a smell of gas
:01:43. > :01:47.Our Chief Reporter, Dave Guest, is nearby,
:01:48. > :02:01.The devastation is apparent over your shoulder. That's right, they
:02:02. > :02:07.have moved the police cordon so we can get near tore the devastation.
:02:08. > :02:13.-- nearer to the devastation. That heap of rubble was a dance studio.
:02:14. > :02:17.But there was a huge explosion that wrecked it and turned many lives
:02:18. > :02:29.upside down. The moment when lives were changed was captured on a car's
:02:30. > :02:33.dash cam. Now, as you can see, the devastation is plain to see down
:02:34. > :02:37.here, if you look from above you can see the true extent of the damage.
:02:38. > :02:41.This was an explosion which left more than 30 people injured. Two of
:02:42. > :02:45.those people still in hospital tonight. I have been catching up
:02:46. > :02:52.with some of the people affected by the blast. Fortunately, we have
:02:53. > :02:57.got... Paula is trying to sort out a temporary home for her family and
:02:58. > :03:03.the strain is beginning to show. Her husband, Chris, was home alone at
:03:04. > :03:07.their house a few doors from the scene of Saturday's blast. There was
:03:08. > :03:11.a huge bang, the windows came n glass every where, I jumped up, ran
:03:12. > :03:17.out, lots of people screaming and shouting, I ran to the corner of the
:03:18. > :03:24.estate, I said, what's happened and they pointed to a huge building
:03:25. > :03:30.which has collapsed. This is their home they're not being allowed back
:03:31. > :03:34.yet. An added worry is their pet cat has not been seen since Saturday
:03:35. > :03:39.night. We talked to the animal rescue department and see whether
:03:40. > :03:43.they can go in and find our cat. What about the future for you,
:03:44. > :03:47.you're citying at your sister-in-laws, what is going to
:03:48. > :03:51.happen to you? We have chatted to our insurance and they're going to
:03:52. > :03:53.sort out accommodation tomorrow. Sometimes you watch things on
:03:54. > :04:00.television and you think to yourself, that will never happen
:04:01. > :04:05.here. And it did on Saturday night. Roger lives a couple of streets from
:04:06. > :04:10.the explosion. This big bang and I managed to jump up quick. As I went
:04:11. > :04:17.to the door, all the slates was coming down off the roof. Tom says
:04:18. > :04:20.?2.50 saved his life. He would have been walking past the very point of
:04:21. > :04:26.the explosion, had it not been for the fact he was delayed collecting
:04:27. > :04:29.his modest winnings after a game of bingo. If we had been a minute
:04:30. > :04:35.earlier, we would have been in the explosion. So I'm very lucky. A
:04:36. > :04:40.number of locals have said they smelled gas in the area on Friday
:04:41. > :04:45.and National Grid have confirmed they did have people in the area on
:04:46. > :04:49.Friday investigating such reports. However, they found nothing. While
:04:50. > :04:52.the investigation continues, many here have praised the way the
:04:53. > :05:01.community pulled together to rally around and help those affected by
:05:02. > :05:06.the blast. That is a theme that has come out today and I'm joined by the
:05:07. > :05:09.pastor of the local church. You said you have been amazed at how the
:05:10. > :05:16.community has pulled together? I have been amazed that the whole
:05:17. > :05:27.community and the wider community have come together. The paramedics,
:05:28. > :05:33.the councillors and the church and areas have come together, even
:05:34. > :05:40.though it is devastation, people are helping each other and it has took
:05:41. > :05:46.this to bing people together. What are you able to do help people and
:05:47. > :05:51.businesses? We have been here most of the day to try and understand
:05:52. > :05:56.what are the issues and what support they need and we are working to
:05:57. > :06:01.identify a building where we could provide space and pop up space for
:06:02. > :06:04.the existing traders, whose property has been damaged. It will take a
:06:05. > :06:10.long time for the community to rebuild? Yes, it is, even though I
:06:11. > :06:15.think it will take some time, I think with the likes of the
:06:16. > :06:21.different partners of commerce, I'm sure we will get this sorted. Thank
:06:22. > :06:25.you. Let's not forget there is still two people in hospital who suffered
:06:26. > :06:31.serious injuries and 30 who were affected by the blast. The effects
:06:32. > :06:40.are going to be going on for some time to come. Thank you.

:07:06. > :07:09.A tip-off they're treating as credible.
:07:10. > :07:16.But they're not saying why anyone would have wanted to kill him.
:07:17. > :07:24.We're keeping an open mind about that at the moment. Steven's
:07:25. > :07:29.background, it was a bit chaotic, and we are not sure at this point in
:07:30. > :07:30.time whether he was involved in any activity that may have meant he was
:07:31. > :07:33.under threat by anybody. Steven lived
:07:34. > :07:34.in Bebington in Wirral. His family say he was

:21:44. > :21:46.you have been ill for a long time. I think the general thing is energy.
:21:47. > :21:51.Because beforehand, I would be going to work and come home and I would be
:21:52. > :21:58.on the sofa and in bed. I didn't have the energy to do anything else.
:21:59. > :22:03.Now, I'm being told by consultants I need to pull back a bit. You got
:22:04. > :22:08.married a your wife is giving you jobs. Yes I keep saying, the
:22:09. > :22:13.consultant says you have got to take it easy. She says whatever. But she
:22:14. > :22:19.has been so supportive and was there every day at the hospital. How long
:22:20. > :22:25.was the recovery for both of you. For me, longer because there were
:22:26. > :22:29.other issues, the kidney worked fine, but there were other problems
:22:30. > :22:36.and I was in hospital until 9th February. So about a month. What was
:22:37. > :22:40.your recovery. I was out in three days. I had the operation on Tuesday
:22:41. > :22:44.and I was home at Friday. What would you say to anybody else who has
:22:45. > :22:48.thought about it, because there will be people watching who are perhaps
:22:49. > :22:54.in ill health and heading down the route that Andy was going down. What
:22:55. > :23:00.would you say to anybody who's considering it. I would say talk to
:23:01. > :23:04.somebody at the hospital. Have a chat with with them. They will
:23:05. > :23:09.reassure you about how well you will be look after. They won't allow to
:23:10. > :23:12.go into this unless you're in the right condition and they will look
:23:13. > :23:17.after you every step of the way. I have been well looked after by the
:23:18. > :23:22.Royal Hospital in Liverpool, who have made me their No 1 priority.
:23:23. > :23:26.You made a point of saying in the piece, that you wanted the
:23:27. > :23:30.publicity, because you, it is so important, you want others to get
:23:31. > :23:34.involved. Yes absolutely. We need people to sign up to the donor
:23:35. > :23:42.register or consider being a living donor. I know that won't be for
:23:43. > :23:48.everybody. But sign up. Does it worry you, there is, there is an up
:23:49. > :23:53.side for Andy, but you only have one kidney, does it worry you that
:23:54. > :23:56.anything might go wrong? There is a possibility that could happen, but
:23:57. > :24:00.there is more a possibility it won't happen. And I'm a healthy and fit
:24:01. > :24:04.and they have made sure I was before they let me go through with this.
:24:05. > :24:10.I'm confident that I should be OK. Things can happen to anybody. But
:24:11. > :24:15.the main thing for me is that Andy's looking so well and he is. You
:24:16. > :24:22.really are. Is there anything you can't do? Only things I couldn't do
:24:23. > :24:25.before. But no generally, apart from having to take it easy, there is
:24:26. > :24:29.nothing stopping me. I can do whatever I want. You have been
:24:30. > :24:35.friends for a long time. You're now, does it feel you're carrying a bit
:24:36. > :24:42.of your best friend around with you. I think I'm tidier. Helen's kind of,
:24:43. > :24:51.well you're a bit OCD with tidiness. I wouldn't say that! But I would.
:24:52. > :24:56.Who know you carried an OCD gene in your kidney! We have discovered
:24:57. > :25:05.something. Thank you. A wonderful story and nice to see Andy and Helen
:25:06. > :25:07.talking about that story. If you want more details, we will put that
:25:08. > :25:21.on our Facebook page. A wonderful three days, but
:25:22. > :25:25.everything has to come to an end. You knew it wouldn't last. We ask
:25:26. > :25:29.for so little. Temperatures around the mid teens, rising into the high
:25:30. > :25:33.teens. The temperatures will be good. I'm suring you some sunshine
:25:34. > :25:39.out of our window. You will have the same picture. Our weather-watchers,
:25:40. > :25:44.there is not a bad picture that has come in. Everything looking
:25:45. > :25:48.beautiful. But we do change and things slip and we will see low
:25:49. > :25:55.pressure through the next can you remember of days. If you watch the
:25:56. > :26:01.arrows, the wind is from a favourable direction. It is still
:26:02. > :26:05.bringing some mild air. So the temperatures won't be an issue, but
:26:06. > :26:10.there will be some rain. That starts from tonight. Although there is
:26:11. > :26:14.hardly a cloud in the sky, by the early hours, the map darkens and
:26:15. > :26:19.cloud rolls in. It is not blanket cloud cover. But the air is mild. So
:26:20. > :26:24.look at the temperatures. Generally around six and seven degrees. Four
:26:25. > :26:31.in rural areas. When you get up tomorrow, the sun it back up at 6.51
:26:32. > :26:36.after the clock change. You get some sunshine here and there, but the map
:26:37. > :26:42.is mainly grey. So that means a veil of cloud. It is not too gloomy and
:26:43. > :26:47.you may catch a glimpse of sunshine. But this front brings light and
:26:48. > :26:53.patchy drizzle. For many place, it hardly even touches the ground. Many
:26:54. > :26:56.places will stay dry. There will be some spells of sunshine. So it is
:26:57. > :27:01.the half way house between the fabulous weather of today and the
:27:02. > :27:10.poorer conditions through Wednesday. But the numbers are still good. 13
:27:11. > :27:12.or 14 degrees. There are three donkeys waiting for you! I'm glad
:27:13. > :27:16.you said that. And finally tonight a vicar
:27:17. > :27:18.in Chorley is looking for a donkey It seems that donkeys aren't
:27:19. > :27:24.as popular as they used to be So if you have one and can help
:27:25. > :27:27.the Reverend Martin Whiffen then send us an e-mail and we
:27:28. > :27:41.can put you in touch. I bet we do get someone. We will
:27:42. > :27:47.have a viewer with a donkey. Good night.
