:00:09. > :00:15.A judge is to decide whether doctors should stop providing life support

:00:16. > :00:17.treatment for a Merseyside police officer.

:00:18. > :00:21.Paul Briggs has been in a coma since he was knocked off his motorbike.

:00:22. > :00:24.His wife says it's what he would've wanted, but doctors treating him say

:00:25. > :00:29.there is a chance his condition could improve.

:00:30. > :00:34.Lindsey Briggs believes that the withdrawal of treatment

:00:35. > :00:37.Paul Briggs was hit by a car as he was travelling to work

:00:38. > :00:40.He suffered a severe brain injury and is being cared

:00:41. > :00:44.Today's hearing was heard at the Court of Protection,

:00:45. > :00:47.which deals with matters relating to be people unable to make

:00:48. > :00:52.The court was told that doctors treating Mr Briggs

:00:53. > :00:55.and an independent doctor h`ve stated that he's in a minim`lly

:00:56. > :01:00.conscious state, whilst another independent doctor believes that

:01:01. > :01:02.The court heard that Mrs Brhggs was distressed to learn that

:01:03. > :01:04.without a written record of what her husband would h`ve

:01:05. > :01:07.intended in this situation, she couldn't stop him receiving

:01:08. > :01:09.care she believes he wouldn't have have consented to.

:01:10. > :01:11.Doctors looking after Paul Briggs believe there's potential

:01:12. > :01:16.Lindsey Briggs says he'll continue to fight for her husband's

:01:17. > :01:26.A judgment is expected later this month.

:01:27. > :01:29.Earlier Roger Johnson spoke to Lindsey Briggs's solicitor,

:01:30. > :01:32.Mathieu Culverhouse, and asked him why she wanted her

:01:33. > :01:35.husband's life-support machine switched off.

:01:36. > :01:39.Well, this past year has cldarly been an extremely difficult time for

:01:40. > :01:42.Lindsey Briggs and for Paul Briggs' family.

:01:43. > :01:44.And they just want what is best for Paul.

:01:45. > :01:46.Lindsey Briggs is firmly of the view that the

:01:47. > :01:48.withdrawal of treatment is in Paul's best interests,

:01:49. > :01:51.given his previously expressed wishes and feelings and

:01:52. > :01:55.And that is a key point, isn't it, that you've

:01:56. > :01:59.Because my next question was going to be, had he ever

:02:00. > :02:01.expressed a view on a situation like this,

:02:02. > :02:03.while he was fit and well, as to what he would

:02:04. > :02:07.And, from what you are saying, he had.

:02:08. > :02:10.Well, there is such a thing as a formal written advance decision,

:02:11. > :02:13.which someone with the ment`l capacity to make decisions can enter

:02:14. > :02:19.Unfortunately, this is not ` case where there is such an advance

:02:20. > :02:23.But we are presenting to the court a case

:02:24. > :02:27.that, given the expressed wishes of Paul Briggs,

:02:28. > :02:31.wife and to others, that given his current

:02:32. > :02:33.situation he would not want

:02:34. > :02:36.Doctors, though, say he's in this minimally

:02:37. > :02:40.How does a court decide which way to go in a

:02:41. > :02:43.situation where you have soleone saying one thing and doctors saying

:02:44. > :02:48.The gathering of evidence is ongoing, because clearly a

:02:49. > :02:51.medical diagnosis can changd, so the court will be presented

:02:52. > :02:55.with up-to-date evidence on the medical diagnosis.

:02:56. > :02:58.But the court will be looking at this decision on the

:02:59. > :03:00.basis of what is in Paul's best interests.

:03:01. > :03:04.one can foresee, not in this case perhaps,

:03:05. > :03:06.where a family might have

:03:07. > :03:09.another reason for wanting to switch a machine off.

:03:10. > :03:13.Everyone who works in these cases recognises that this

:03:14. > :03:16.is the most important decishon a court and a judge is ever

:03:17. > :03:21.These cases are treated extremely seriously and nond

:03:22. > :03:26.of these decisions are taken lightly, in any way.

:03:27. > :03:28.Thank you very much indeed for your time.

:03:29. > :03:37.The parents of missing Blackpool teenager Charlene Downes have

:03:38. > :03:41.criticised police for taking 13 years to release potentiallx

:04:21. > :04:23.in which she disappeared, including a distinctive pair

:04:24. > :04:29.Yet the footage has never bden seen by the public.

:04:30. > :04:33.What I can't fathom is why this was never found in the prevhous

:04:34. > :04:40.But at the same time I am happy they have found the

:04:41. > :04:44.Now hopefully they could move forward and get some answers.

:04:45. > :04:46.The first investigation into Charlene's disappearance

:04:47. > :04:51.This man - Iyad Albattikhi was charged with her

:04:52. > :04:55.His trial in 2008 collapsed after doubts about the reli`bility

:04:56. > :05:00.Lancashire Police was criticised for its handling of the casd.

:05:01. > :05:03.Charlene's parents hope this new footage will create

:05:12. > :05:20.I spoke with them last week about this and they were shown thd images.

:05:21. > :05:27.And that is why we are just publishing them now.

:05:28. > :05:30.But I completely understand they want to know what happened to their

:05:31. > :05:36.daughter, and we are committed to do all we can to find those responsible

:05:37. > :05:41.As time goes by, detectives accept it is harder to

:05:42. > :05:50.A ?100,000 reward remains an offer for information

:05:51. > :06:02.leading to a conviction or recovery of Charlene's body.

:06:03. > :06:08.The pain is undescribable and I wouldn't wish it on anyone `t all
