:00:13. > :00:19.A court's heard how a young man fell to his death when he tried to escape

:00:20. > :00:22.from a lift that got stuck in an apartment building in Bolton.

:00:23. > :00:25.Craig Jones was 27 - he fell five floors,

:00:26. > :00:28.suffering injuries so severe he died later in hospital.

:00:29. > :00:30.Our social affairs correspondant Clare Fallon

:00:31. > :00:35.has been at Bolton Crown Court for us today.

:00:36. > :00:38.Craig Jones has been described as a man who was full

:00:39. > :00:44.He worked as a plasterer and he lived in an apartment block

:00:45. > :00:47.that is only a couple of hundred metres from where I'm standing

:00:48. > :00:51.And, back in 2014, he got stuck in one of the lifts

:00:52. > :00:55.Now, in court we heard that there were previous

:00:56. > :00:59.People have been stuck in them before.

:01:00. > :01:03.On occasions, fire crews have been called out to rescue people.

:01:04. > :01:06.In addition, there was a problem with the emergency call button.

:01:07. > :01:10.And, so, on this occasion, Craig Jones decided to try and get

:01:11. > :01:16.He managed to get the doors open and he tried to lower himself out

:01:17. > :01:25.but he fell about five floors and suffered injuries that

:01:26. > :01:27.were so serious he couldn't be saved.

:01:28. > :01:31.Now, the company with responsibility for managing that apartment

:01:32. > :01:34.building, for ensuring its safety, Warwick Estates has pleaded guilty

:01:35. > :01:39.We were expecting the company to be sentenced today for.

:01:40. > :01:42.For the judge to say how much that company will have

:01:43. > :01:47.But towards the end of the day in court, the judge said

:01:48. > :01:49.that he simply needs more time to consider that sentence.

:01:50. > :01:52.That may now happen tomorrow or the delay may be further.

:01:53. > :01:54.Of course, Craig Jones's family came here today hoping

:01:55. > :01:57.that they would get some closure, hoping that, by this evening,

:01:58. > :02:00.they would know what punishment had been handed out but now we'll have

:02:01. > :02:06.A drink-driver who killed a woman in a hit-and-run incident

:02:07. > :02:09.in Greater Manchester has been jailed for six years.

:02:10. > :02:11.Susan Smythe was walking home from playing bingo

:02:12. > :02:15.when she was hit by a speeding car in Stretford in September.

:02:16. > :02:19.Paul Tomlinson from Sale Moor was sentenced to six years,

:02:20. > :02:22.but could be released in three, which has angered

:02:23. > :02:27.The justice system stinks in this country.

:02:28. > :02:31.For taking someone's life, three years is nothing.

:02:32. > :02:38.and her children are doing the life sentence too.

:02:39. > :02:43.Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder -

:02:44. > :02:46.after the death of a man following a large fight

:02:47. > :02:49.The 31-year-old was found with serious head injuries

:02:50. > :02:55.Police are are asking for witnesses to come forward -

:02:56. > :03:13.as its thought there were up ten men involved in the disturbance.

:03:14. > :03:23.a drugs fugitive has been sentenced to 13 years. A consignment of

:03:24. > :03:28.cocaine from Tilbury docks was found in November 20 13.

:03:29. > :03:30.A new trial of technology which could help hundreds

:03:31. > :03:33.of thousands of blind people to get some sight back

:03:34. > :03:36.Initial trials on the so-called "bionic eye" have been

:03:37. > :03:38.so successful, the NHS is now funding further research.

:03:39. > :03:39.Our Health Correspondent Gill Dummigan reports.

:03:40. > :03:42.Keith Hayman from Fleetwood suffers from a rare progressive condition

:03:43. > :03:48.In the mid '80s, he finally went blind,

:03:49. > :03:51.and that's how he stayed for the next 30 years.

:03:52. > :03:55.I've missed seeing my grandchildren grow up.

:03:56. > :03:57.That's the biggest heartache, really.

:03:58. > :03:59.But in 2009, Keith had a revolutionary operation

:04:00. > :04:03.at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

:04:04. > :04:06.Surgeons implanted a chip like this at the back of his eye,

:04:07. > :04:09.which has allowed him to see light and shapes.

:04:10. > :04:13.Not full sight, but still a life-changing improvement.

:04:14. > :04:16.It just gives you more of an interest,

:04:17. > :04:19.because instead of walking around in total darkness everywhere,

:04:20. > :04:25.you have got all these shapes to work out what they are.

:04:26. > :04:30.You know, windows and lights and people, cars, everything.

:04:31. > :04:33.The system uses special glasses with a built-in video camera.

:04:34. > :04:39.That sends wireless signals to that chip implanted on Keith's retina.

:04:40. > :04:43.The chip then helps send that visual information to the brain.

:04:44. > :04:45.Keith's operation was funded by the company

:04:46. > :04:49.This new trial with five patients, also with the same condition,

:04:50. > :04:58.the technology could eventually become widely available.

:04:59. > :05:00.Retinitis Pigmentosa, the condition which Keith

:05:01. > :05:06.and the five patients in this new trial suffer from, is fairly rare.

:05:07. > :05:10.But there's a second trial being run here to see how the same technology

:05:11. > :05:13.can help people with Age-Related Macular Degeneration,

:05:14. > :05:17.the most common cause of sight loss in the UK,

:05:18. > :05:25.I think a lot of ophthalmologists think this is in the realms

:05:26. > :05:27.of science fiction, but it's very much become science fact.

:05:28. > :05:34.So we are very, very excited about it.

:05:35. > :05:36.Keith helped researchers shape this technology.

:05:37. > :05:40.The hope is that, within a few years,

:05:41. > :05:47.the benefits he's had from it can be shared with thousands of others.

:05:48. > :05:50.The Food Standards Agency has begun an investigation after six food

:05:51. > :05:56.It's believed the cause of the outbreak of the campylobacter

:06:59. > :07:02.Today a new flood defence system aimed at protecting

:07:03. > :07:10.The new flood defence for Croston has been built a couple of miles

:07:11. > :07:17.From today, it protects 400 properties to

:07:18. > :07:21.The Environment Agency spent ?6 million building a dam which will

:07:22. > :07:24.hold back the river Yarrow if needed.

:07:25. > :07:26.One of the problems is that when heavy rain produces surface

:07:27. > :07:30.water, which would normally run into the river,

:07:31. > :07:38.if the river is full, it has nowhere to go.

:07:39. > :07:40.Now these new gates can be closed, damming the

:07:41. > :07:43.river here so thought water builds up further upstream, meaning there

:07:44. > :07:45.is more room further downstream in Croston

:07:46. > :07:52.Last December, it was one of many Northwest communities affected

:07:53. > :08:03.One community leader said the floods caused huge stress for many people,

:08:04. > :08:05.some of whom are not in their house now.

:08:06. > :08:07.She is confident the new scheme will work.

:08:08. > :08:10.People often stand here and say, it could not possibly have

:08:11. > :08:27.If we had that amount of rain again, their steam would cope with it.
