:01:26. > :01:29.a fantastic job creating a top show in the North, which is

:01:30. > :01:31.The big stars start competing tomorrow.

:01:32. > :01:34.Today's opening session was a chance for amateur riders

:01:35. > :01:35.like Sophie Bowen-Howard from Lancashire to

:01:36. > :01:41.When you're in there it's not as bad but leading up to it, it's like,

:01:42. > :01:44.my heart is like constantly going like that but I really enjoy

:01:45. > :01:49.We travel a couple of hours every other weekend up and down

:01:50. > :01:52.the country but to have one in the North is really good.

:01:53. > :01:56.The Echo Arena has undergone a major transformation to host this event.

:01:57. > :01:59.And not just here in the arena, where they have specially designed

:02:00. > :02:02.fences and the special surface laid out, but out the back as well.

:02:03. > :02:05.Part of the car park has now become a make-shift stable block

:02:06. > :02:09.with around 100 horses being stored here over the next few days.

:02:10. > :02:11.It's something different for the city of Liverpool,

:02:12. > :02:13.who of course have an equestrian heritage.

:02:14. > :02:15.We have the Grand National based down the road at Aintree.

:02:16. > :02:18.We have got nine or ten riders coming over from Europe,

:02:19. > :02:22.so they will be on their way now, so they take this really seriously.

:02:23. > :02:25.It's a big deal, it's top sport and there will be lots of people

:02:26. > :02:28.viewing from around the world on the live streaming.

:02:29. > :02:30.The main events last for three days, starting tomorrow.

:02:36. > :02:37.Now, you will have have heard of famous artists

:02:38. > :02:41.But do you recognise the name of Wynford Dewhurst?

:02:42. > :02:45.The largely unknown artist was born in Manchester in the 19th century

:02:46. > :02:48.and an exhibition of his work is currently showing in the city.

:02:49. > :02:55.Well, we saw this was a Manchester artist but to be honest

:02:56. > :02:58.with you although I'd heard that name, I didn't really

:02:59. > :03:02.I hadn't heard of Wynford Dewhurst before.

:03:03. > :03:09.The Manchester Art Gallery has opened an exhibition,

:03:10. > :03:16.which showcases a collection of the finest works

:03:17. > :03:18.by the Manchester-born writer and artist dubbed

:03:19. > :03:22.Dewhurst's works were heavily influenced by one of the founders

:03:23. > :03:28.Everybody who truly loves Manchester really should be very,

:03:29. > :03:35.Not only was he born and raised here, he held a lifelong

:03:36. > :03:42.Dewhurst is most famous for his 1908 work, The Picnic.

:03:43. > :03:46.This is the artist in 1908, at the very peak of his powers.

:03:47. > :03:51.He is expressing his vision in probably his most complete way

:03:52. > :03:55.and many people do see this as his finest work.

:03:56. > :04:03.He originally trained in the legal profession but after showing

:04:04. > :04:06.artistic flair and after a number of his paintings were published

:04:07. > :04:10.in local journals, he decided to become a painter.

:04:11. > :04:13.And he was quite a controversial character in that he devised

:04:14. > :04:16.a theory that the art movement, Impressionism, first

:04:17. > :04:23.Dewhurst outlines in his theory that Impressionism wasn't French

:04:24. > :04:25.in origin but it was British and he names specifically

:04:26. > :04:28.John Constable and J M W Turner, two of the greatest landscape

:04:29. > :04:33.artists in history, obviously British.

:04:34. > :04:37.Whatever the case, Dewhurst's talent certainly speaks for itself.

:04:38. > :04:40.Manchester's Monet is on until April.

:05:32. > :05:34.However, on New Year's Day, temperatures take a real tumble.

:05:35. > :05:37.It is going to be a cold start to the New Year.

:05:38. > :05:40.In between those days, we have a line of rain

:05:41. > :05:43.that is going to work its way through and may well dampen people's

:05:44. > :05:47.A few spots of drizzle are in the wind as we speak

:05:48. > :05:50.but for the most part it is a dry night.

:05:51. > :05:53.There will be a couple of breaks here and there but for the most part

:05:54. > :05:56.the temperatures are very good indeed, between 7 and even

:05:57. > :06:00.So, for New Year's Eve, it's a decent enough sort of day.

:06:01. > :06:02.It is very mild, there will be a lot of cloud cover,

:06:03. > :06:05.which breaks from time to time to allow some good

:06:06. > :06:08.In terms of the numbers, 9 and 10 Celsius and look

:06:09. > :06:11.at the line of rain that comes through for New Year's Eve,

:06:12. > :06:15.making midnight rather wet for most places.
