:00:00. > :00:10.Here, on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.

:00:11. > :00:14.An MP has criticised Virgin Trains for charging passengers more

:00:15. > :00:17.to travel a shorter distance on the same line.

:00:18. > :00:20.A ticket to London from Preston can cost three times more than it

:00:21. > :00:22.does from Lancaster, which is 20 miles further north.

:00:23. > :00:24.The firm says that's because more commuters use that line.

:00:25. > :00:32.Many passengers here in Preston say they are angry.

:00:33. > :00:35.Overcrowded trains and price increases are common problems

:00:36. > :00:42.Now it seems you can be charged more for travelling less.

:00:43. > :00:45.For example, last Thursday a ticket on the 7:58am from Preston

:00:46. > :00:53.If you bought it at Lancaster, 20 miles further away,

:00:54. > :01:00.It is the same train, so what is going on?

:01:01. > :01:03.It seems you are being charged depending on what sort

:01:04. > :01:23.In a statement, the rail company said:

:01:24. > :01:26.One passenger told his MP he bought his ticket from Lancaster,

:01:27. > :01:29.but boarded one stop later at Preston, and was told

:01:30. > :01:33.to pay an extra ?100 or face being prosecuted.

:01:34. > :01:37.Virgin need to have a look at their pricing structure,

:01:38. > :01:40.but they also need to stop ripping people off because this

:01:41. > :01:45.It is not about managing leisure travel or business travel,

:01:46. > :01:48.these are the same people getting on the same train at the same time.

:01:49. > :01:54.You can be sitting next to somebody who has paid ?60,

:01:55. > :01:59.They need to do something with the ticketing.

:02:00. > :02:05.Virgin Trains says passengers can get cheaper tickets from Preston

:02:06. > :02:17.With me now is Tony Miles from Modern Railways Magazine.

:02:18. > :02:21.Passenger groups are saying customers shouldn't stand for it,

:02:22. > :02:39.There is not a lot that can be done, and this was invented in British

:02:40. > :02:43.rail days, I found a magazine from 1983 which look at how passengers

:02:44. > :02:48.used trains and continues from that point. Virgin says it is about peak

:02:49. > :02:53.and off-peak about it is the same train, same time, just different

:02:54. > :02:58.types of passengers. It is a recognition perhaps that on one flow

:02:59. > :03:02.passengers are business passengers, but on the other flow, most senders

:03:03. > :03:06.and they see this as off-peak travel and they see this as off-peak travel

:03:07. > :03:10.is because it is a different passenger market. We have lots of

:03:11. > :03:14.comments after we did the story earlier this evening, one saying

:03:15. > :03:18.that if we complain too much, the chances are they might actually get

:03:19. > :03:22.rid of off-peak travel altogether. Is that likely? I don't think it is

:03:23. > :03:29.likely, but it could seek a tightening up of the rules and some

:03:30. > :03:37.of the lower rail fares disappearing. That is the way it is

:03:38. > :03:44.set. Is there legally anyway round this? What is split ticketing? It is

:03:45. > :03:47.completely legal, where you look at whether buying a ticket for the

:03:48. > :03:53.first half of the journey and then changing to a different ticket but

:03:54. > :03:59.often saying on the same train will save you money, it is not legal in

:04:00. > :04:03.some countries but it is legal in this country. Various websites will

:04:04. > :04:07.help you do that. You can book 24 weeks ahead sometimes whether it is

:04:08. > :04:10.worth looking as far ahead as possible if you know you are

:04:11. > :04:13.travelling. It is not very easy. Thank you for coming in.

:04:14. > :04:15.A dog described as dangerous and sentenced to death has

:04:16. > :04:19.The ten-year-old Staffy had been trapped with his dead

:04:20. > :04:21.owner inside their home on Merseyside for days.

:04:22. > :04:24.By the time police found them there were bite marks on the body.

:04:25. > :04:29.But today, campaigners won a judicial review of his case.

:04:30. > :04:33.Here's our Chief Reporter Dave Guest.

:04:34. > :04:35.These two videos are said to show different sides

:04:36. > :04:42.This one was filmed by Merseyside Police.

:04:43. > :04:44.This persuaded them that Butch the Staffordshire bull

:04:45. > :04:49.terrier was dangerous and should be destroyed.

:04:50. > :04:59.This one was made by the charity Senior Staffy Club.

:05:00. > :05:04.They said the police handler had used a flawed technique with Butch.

:05:05. > :05:06.The expert featured in their film concluded Butch posed no threat

:05:07. > :05:15.We knew we could find him a new home, and that's what we were

:05:16. > :05:20.Last year, a judge sitting at Liverpool Magistrates' Court

:05:21. > :05:23.decided the police were right and Butch should be put down.

:05:24. > :05:26.He had been seized after being recovered

:05:27. > :05:32.His owner had died and the precise cause of his death remains unknown.

:05:33. > :05:35.Butch remained trapped inside their home for days.

:05:36. > :05:38.When he was found, there were bite marks on the body.

:05:39. > :05:41.His owner, who had been ill for some time, had been in the process

:05:42. > :05:44.of signing him over to the charity when he died.

:05:45. > :05:47.Today at a court in Manchester, the charity asked the judge to allow

:05:48. > :05:53.In court, a barrister representing the charity argued that the police's

:05:54. > :05:56.initial decision to seize Butch had been unlawful.

:05:57. > :05:59.She said the Magistrates' Court hearing, which decided

:06:00. > :06:03.he should be destroyed, had been unfair because the charity

:06:04. > :06:08.had not been given the chance for their own expert to give

:06:09. > :06:11.evidence to counter that which had been given

:06:12. > :06:16.His honour Judge Bird agreed there were merits in both arguments

:06:17. > :06:20.and said the case could be the subject of a judicial review.

:06:21. > :06:23.Merseyside Police said the Chief Constable has noted

:06:24. > :06:31.A bagpipe-playing busker has been jailed for four months after duping

:06:32. > :06:33.people in Liverpool into thinking he was collecting for

:06:34. > :06:40.The court heard Angus Carpenter played with a Hillsborough Justice

:06:41. > :06:43.Campaign banner on his bagpipes the day before the 26th

:06:44. > :06:49.The 62-year-old claimed it had been a tribute.

:06:50. > :06:52.What is the secret of a long and successful marriage?

:06:53. > :06:55.If anybody should know it's Trudy and Barclay Patoir from Manchester.

:06:56. > :06:58.They've been together for more than 70 years,

:06:59. > :07:01.facing everything from war and racism together.

:07:02. > :07:15.Barclay was an apprentice engineer in British Guyana.

:07:16. > :07:19.In 1942 he found himself in Liverpool.

:07:20. > :07:30.Barclay was put to work making Lancaster Bombers

:07:31. > :07:35.Many men and women toil night and day to produce these gigantic

:07:36. > :07:41.His assistant on the production line was Trudy.

:07:42. > :07:44.Everyone laughed at us, saying he's ruining you.

:07:45. > :07:49.He would bring me sandwiches in and make me cups of tea.

:07:50. > :07:51.Barclay and Trudy took a shine to each other.

:07:52. > :07:55.And a visit to the Empire Theatre to see star singer

:07:56. > :08:00.We went to see Richard Tauber and it was...

:08:01. > :08:16.But in the Liverpool of the 1940s, they faced

:08:17. > :08:25.The people used to complain and it didn't bother me.

:08:26. > :08:27.And that is because you were white and Barclay is black?

:08:28. > :08:31.Yes, but it did not bother me one bit.

:08:32. > :08:33.The couple, keen tennis players in those days,

:08:34. > :08:37.moved to a brand new house on the Wythenshawe

:08:38. > :08:47.Barclay's 97th birthday is next week.

:08:48. > :08:50.What advice would you give a young couple just starting out now

:08:51. > :08:54.If he has a night out, she has got to have one.

:08:55. > :08:58.What do you think, Barclay, what advice would

:08:59. > :09:07.Mind you, he was out every night at the club!

:09:08. > :09:12.Everton have agreed a fee of ?22 million for Manchester United

:09:13. > :09:16.Meanwhile, United will take a 2-0 lead into the second leg

:09:17. > :09:22.This goal from Juan Mata gave them the lead against Hull City

:09:23. > :09:24.at Old Trafford, before Marouane Fellaini made the score

:09:25. > :09:39.That's all the news and sport from me.

:09:40. > :09:42.Now, the weather forecast. Good evening. I am sure you know

:09:43. > :09:46.what will happen over the next couple of days. We have talked about

:09:47. > :09:50.it for the last couple of days. The wind changes direction and we open

:09:51. > :09:53.the door too much colder air which will set in for quite a few days.

:09:54. > :09:56.Through Thursday and Friday you will notice a massive drop in the

:09:57. > :10:01.temperatures, particularly overnight. There will be some wintry

:10:02. > :10:06.showers around, but our problem at the moment is the wind. It will be

:10:07. > :10:12.at its worst around the eastern side of the region through eastern parts

:10:13. > :10:17.of Lancashire and Manchester. We could be talking about gusts of up

:10:18. > :10:20.to 60 mph. A lot of cloud cover, some rain into the early hours of

:10:21. > :10:25.the morning, but all of this keeps the tempters up for the most part

:10:26. > :10:31.between five and 7 degrees. Tomorrow, the wind a real feature of

:10:32. > :10:33.the weather. Take care if you are travelling. The eastern side of the

:10:34. > :10:41.region will see the worst of that. The weather has patchy cloud with

:10:42. > :10:45.good sunny spells, but you may see a temperature of around seven or 8

:10:46. > :10:48.degrees at lunchtime, at that is just the number on the chart.

:10:49. > :10:53.Through the afternoon, wintry showers will break out and you may

:10:54. > :10:58.see a temp at three or 4 degrees by tea-time. Those numbers are

:10:59. > :11:02.something that you will have to get used to because once the cold air

:11:03. > :11:03.digs in it is sticking around for a while. Good night.

:11:04. > :11:07.of the week, and to start the weekend as well. For more on that

:11:08. > :11:16.snow situation, over to Jay Wynne now.

:11:17. > :11:24.Quite a lot going on over the next few days. The strong north-westerly

:11:25. > :11:28.wind will drag some really cold Arctic air across our shores full

:11:29. > :11:31.stop that will be with us for the next few days. And there will be

:11:32. > :11:33.some wintry weather and it will be
