0:00:13 > 0:00:14Good evening.
0:00:14 > 0:00:17More than ?185,000 has been raised for the children of a couple
0:00:17 > 0:00:20from Wirral who had cancer and died within days of each other.
0:00:20 > 0:00:24The family of Julie and Mike Bennet shared a picture on social media
0:00:24 > 0:00:26of the couple in their last moments at St John's Hospice.
0:00:26 > 0:00:29Their dying wish was that their three children should
0:00:29 > 0:00:30continue their education.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33The poignant photograph that they posted and that was shared
0:00:33 > 0:00:35around the world has helped make sure that will happen,
0:00:35 > 0:00:37as Andy Gill explains.
0:00:37 > 0:00:39Mike and Julie Bennet with their children Luke,
0:00:39 > 0:00:41who's 21, 18-year-old Hannah and Oliver, who's 13.
0:00:41 > 0:00:47Three children who lost both parents within a week.
0:00:47 > 0:00:49They're coming to terms.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52It's Monday morning and they are facing the reality
0:00:52 > 0:00:55of what has to be done and they are in doing mode,
0:00:55 > 0:00:58so they are getting all the affairs in order and they are making
0:00:58 > 0:01:01their plans for mum and dad to say their farewells.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04Mike Bennet had been diagnosed with cancer three years ago.
0:01:04 > 0:01:06His wife's diagnosis came last May.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09Their children shared a photograph of their parents'
0:01:09 > 0:01:13last moment together at Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15When the couple were admitted earlier this month, staff
0:01:15 > 0:01:19realised both were nearing the end of their lives,
0:01:19 > 0:01:23so arranged for them to be put in a side room together.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26I am really proud of the staff on the ward realising
0:01:26 > 0:01:28they needed to do something and quite quickly.
0:01:28 > 0:01:31They took their own initiative, they made those plans themselves,
0:01:31 > 0:01:34they knew I'd agree with that, we do everything we can to make
0:01:34 > 0:01:37the best care for our patients but also in this case
0:01:37 > 0:01:38for the three children.
0:01:38 > 0:01:40Shortly after the photo was taken, Mr and Mrs Bennet were moved
0:01:40 > 0:01:41to a local hospice.
0:01:41 > 0:01:43He died a week ago.
0:01:43 > 0:01:44Mrs Bennet died on Saturday.
0:01:44 > 0:01:48The hospice says it's unusual to have two members of the same
0:01:48 > 0:01:51family pass away within such a short space of time, but all patients
0:01:51 > 0:01:55are offered the same level of care.
0:01:55 > 0:01:57For certain families it might be
0:01:57 > 0:02:00things to do with the environment that really matter to them,
0:02:00 > 0:02:04so replicating a home environment for them,
0:02:04 > 0:02:07music that might be really important to them, photos on the walls,
0:02:07 > 0:02:11looking after patients' spirituality and so what keeps them going,
0:02:11 > 0:02:15what's important to them as a person.
0:02:15 > 0:02:17The couple's final wish was for their children to stay
0:02:17 > 0:02:21together at their home in Irby and complete their education.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24People have donated to an online fundraising page
0:02:24 > 0:02:26to allow them to do that.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28Well-wishers have raised more than three times
0:02:28 > 0:02:30the original target.
0:02:30 > 0:02:36Andy Gill, BBC North West Tonight, Wirral.
0:02:36 > 0:02:38Manchester gangster Stephen Akinyemi died
0:02:38 > 0:02:40after he was shot through the head.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43The man who did it Arran Coghlan said he acted in self defence
0:02:43 > 0:02:48after Akinyemi attacked him in his Cheshire home.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50Today, a second inquest opened into the killing
0:02:50 > 0:02:52after Mr Coghlan said he was unhappy with the original
0:02:52 > 0:02:53inquest's open verdict.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56Dave Guest reports.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59Violence was part and parcel Stephen Akinyemi's life
0:02:59 > 0:03:01and he met a violent death.
0:03:01 > 0:03:03He was shot and killed during a fight at this luxury home
0:03:03 > 0:03:05in Alderley Edge in January 2010.
0:03:05 > 0:03:07Arran Coghlan lived there.
0:03:07 > 0:03:11He has always insisted Akinyemi was trying to kill him and says
0:03:12 > 0:03:13he acted in self defence.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16Mr Coghlan was initially charged with the murder
0:03:16 > 0:03:18but the charge was later dropped.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20He's no stranger to court proceedings.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23He's twice faced courts accused of murder.
0:03:23 > 0:03:27In 1996 he was cleared of shooting dead Chris Little and seven years
0:03:27 > 0:03:31later was cleared of murdering drug dealer David Barnshaw.
0:03:31 > 0:03:35In 2011, in an inquest into the death of Stephen Akinyemi,
0:03:35 > 0:03:39a coroner recorded an open verdict and expressed doubts
0:03:39 > 0:03:41over Arran Coghlan's account of what happened.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43Mr Coghlan was not happy.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46He launched a legal fight to get a new inquest.
0:03:46 > 0:03:50He says the police could have arrested Mr Akinyemi before he went
0:03:50 > 0:03:53to his home on that fateful night because they had evidence he'd
0:03:53 > 0:03:54committed a violent rape.
0:03:54 > 0:03:58Mr Coghlan says they chose not to, even though they knew
0:03:58 > 0:04:01there was potential for trouble between the two men.
0:04:01 > 0:04:05Arran Coghlan has now got that new inquest.
0:04:05 > 0:04:07He arrived in London this morning for the start of what's likely
0:04:08 > 0:04:09to be a two week hearing.
0:04:09 > 0:04:13Here we are, seven years down the line, two judicial reviews
0:04:13 > 0:04:16I have had to fight, we are on our third coroner,
0:04:16 > 0:04:26the's see if we can get some truth.
0:04:26 > 0:04:28-- let's see if we can get some truth.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31The coroner, Bernard Richmond QC, has said that he will consider
0:04:31 > 0:04:34whether the police had any prior knowledge or suspicion that events
0:04:34 > 0:04:36were going to unfold in the way that they did.
0:04:36 > 0:04:38This afternoon, he heard from Stephen Akinyemi's brother, John.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41He said his brother routinely wore body armour because he'd
0:04:41 > 0:04:42been shot in the past.
0:04:42 > 0:04:44But he said he did not know whether his brother
0:04:44 > 0:04:46could easily access weapons or whether he carried
0:04:46 > 0:04:47them routinely.
0:04:47 > 0:04:49could easily access weapons or whether he carried
0:04:49 > 0:04:50them routinely.
0:04:50 > 0:04:52When asked directly whether his brother was a member
0:04:52 > 0:04:55of a gang in Cheetham Hill, he said simply, "he lived
0:04:55 > 0:04:56in Cheetham Hill."
0:04:56 > 0:04:58Dave Guest, BBC North West Tonight, London.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00A police investigation is underway after a suspected arson attack
0:05:00 > 0:05:03destroyed a Grade Two listed church in Salford.
0:05:03 > 0:05:06The Church of the Ascension had just undergone a refurbishment costing
0:05:06 > 0:05:11?250,000 before fire broke out late yesterday evening,
0:05:11 > 0:05:12devastating the building.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15Parts of the church will now have to be demolished.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17Police have released CCTV footage showing a man leaving the scene
0:05:17 > 0:05:24around the time the fire broke out and are appealing for information.
0:05:24 > 0:05:30So many people's lives are enmeshed in the story of this Church
0:05:30 > 0:05:32Church of the Ascension, where they have been
0:05:32 > 0:05:34christened, where they have
0:05:34 > 0:05:37been married and where funerals have taken place and it has served this
0:05:37 > 0:05:40community for nearly 150 years and to lose it in this way
0:05:40 > 0:05:46is tragic beyond words.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48Meanwhile, officers investigating a fatal house fire
0:05:48 > 0:05:52in Withington have found there were no suspicious
0:05:52 > 0:05:53circumstances.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56Police were called to the house on Parsonage road in the early
0:05:56 > 0:05:57hours of Friday morning.
0:05:57 > 0:06:00A man and woman, Mohammed and Hasma Awad, sadly died at the scene.
0:06:00 > 0:06:02Their children, three girls and a boy all aged under 17,
0:06:02 > 0:06:08and a man, remain in hospital in a stable condition.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11Overuse of one of our most common medicines is killing thousands
0:06:11 > 0:06:14of people in the country every year.
0:06:14 > 0:06:16That's the warning from doctors as a new campaign is
0:06:16 > 0:06:18launched about antibiotics.
0:06:18 > 0:06:22And more of them are prescribed here than anywhere else.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25It's claimed around 5,000 people die each year in England
0:06:25 > 0:06:29because antibiotics no longer work for some infections.
0:06:29 > 0:06:32Earlier, I talked to Dr Rob Barnett, who represents Liverpool GPs,
0:06:32 > 0:06:35and asked him what are the dangers of taking antibiotics
0:06:35 > 0:06:38when you don't need them?
0:06:38 > 0:06:40People use antibiotics for coughs and colds,
0:06:40 > 0:06:45which are basically viral infections when they're not needed.
0:06:45 > 0:06:47We are going to end up with resistance to antibiotics
0:06:47 > 0:06:50and as you have already reported, we are seeing more and more strains
0:06:50 > 0:06:53of infection, bacteria, that don't respond to antibiotics
0:06:53 > 0:06:56and that is going to cause us problems in the years to come.
0:06:56 > 0:07:01So is it too much to say that it is killing people,
0:07:01 > 0:07:04this resistance to antibiotics?
0:07:04 > 0:07:08Well, the report seems to suggest that we are now seeing something
0:07:08 > 0:07:15in the region of about 5,000 deaths a year from antibiotic resistance
0:07:15 > 0:07:25and what we really need to do is try and make sure that people
0:07:26 > 0:07:30and what we really need to do is try and make sure that people only take
0:07:30 > 0:07:32them when it is appropriate and they are the for
0:07:32 > 0:07:35the length of time they have been described and doses
0:07:35 > 0:07:36they have been prescribed.
0:07:36 > 0:07:38We are seeing too many patients who take antibiotics
0:07:38 > 0:07:39for only two or three days.
0:07:39 > 0:07:41They feel better, stop taking antibiotics and that is
0:07:41 > 0:07:44when the bacteria will end up developing a resistance
0:07:44 > 0:07:46to antibiotics, so when they are needed they won't work.
0:07:46 > 0:07:48This new campaign is saying, you know, don't use them
0:07:48 > 0:07:51when you should not use them, but presumably they are being
0:07:51 > 0:07:53prescribed antibiotics, so do some doctors need to be
0:07:53 > 0:07:55educated about when to prescribe them as well?
0:07:55 > 0:07:58I think it is partly about reminding doctors when and when they should
0:07:58 > 0:08:00not prescribe antibiotics but it is also about
0:08:00 > 0:08:02people's expectations.
0:08:02 > 0:08:05A lot of people come to see their doctor expecting
0:08:05 > 0:08:08antibiotics and get quite upset if they are not prescribed.
0:08:08 > 0:08:12They actually think they are being done out of medication that would do
0:08:12 > 0:08:15them some good and the campaign is about reminding people that
0:08:15 > 0:08:17for simple viruses, for coughs, colds, flu like symptoms,
0:08:17 > 0:08:27antibiotics have no part to play, they just do not work.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30An announcement is expected tomorrow on the future of a planned nuclear
0:08:30 > 0:08:34power plant next to the Sellafield site in West Cumbria.
0:08:34 > 0:08:37The Financial Times reports that Toshiba will explain how much money
0:08:37 > 0:08:42it is likely to loseon its US nuclear business and the future
0:08:42 > 0:08:45it is likely to lose on its US nuclear business and the future
0:08:45 > 0:08:46of its overseas investments.
0:08:46 > 0:08:48It could lead to the company withdrawing from the
0:08:48 > 0:08:49partnership behind Moorside.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52A passenger ferry which collided with a pier in strong
0:08:52 > 0:08:54winds on the Isle of Man has resumed service.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57The Ben MyChree crashed as it came into Douglas Harbour
0:08:57 > 0:08:58yesterday evening.
0:08:58 > 0:09:00It escaped with minor damage and will sail
0:09:00 > 0:09:10to to Heysham at 8.30am.
0:09:11 > 0:09:13-- and set sail at 8.30pm.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16In the harbour there was a very strong, prolonged burst of wind
0:09:16 > 0:09:18which was way in excess of what was forecast.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20There is superficial damage to the vessel.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22The railings along deck five, which is the upper car deck,
0:09:22 > 0:09:25were damaged and also fire main bursts, which I think is the sort
0:09:25 > 0:09:28of spectacular plume of water that everybody is talking
0:09:28 > 0:09:29about on the video that was posted.
0:09:29 > 0:09:32Manchester City are up to second in the Premier League after a 2-0
0:09:32 > 0:09:33win at Bournemouth tonight.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36Raheem Sterling put City ahead just before the half hour mark,
0:09:36 > 0:09:38then turned provider for substitute Sergio Aguero, whose touch
0:09:38 > 0:09:41was deflected into his own net by Bournemouth defender Tyrone
0:09:41 > 0:09:47Tyrone Mings.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50That's all the news and sport, but a reminder the Super League Show
0:09:50 > 0:09:51is tonight at 11.30pm.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54That's it from me now here's Dianne with the weather.
0:09:54 > 0:09:55Good evening to you.
0:09:55 > 0:10:00Well, it was a bitterly cold, raw day-to-day but there
0:10:00 > 0:10:03Well, it was a bitterly cold, raw day today but there
0:10:03 > 0:10:04was plenty of sunshine around.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07Our weather Watchers pictures really do show the region at its best.
0:10:07 > 0:10:08Tonnes of blue sky.
0:10:08 > 0:10:11We do see some changes as we head through the next couple of days.
0:10:11 > 0:10:14The wind is changing direction pretty much every single day.
0:10:14 > 0:10:17It allows much, much milder conditions to come in but I think
0:10:17 > 0:10:20from time to time we will see quite a bit of cloud cover.
0:10:20 > 0:10:21And that's the story right now.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23It is a bit of a 50-50 split.
0:10:23 > 0:10:26If you have got clear skies, you will hang onto them for a short
0:10:26 > 0:10:28while, but the clouds rolls in rolls out.
0:10:28 > 0:10:31Over the highest level routes we could see a little bit of mist,
0:10:32 > 0:10:33potentially a little bit of fog.
0:10:33 > 0:10:34But the success story tonight, temperatures.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37Two and three Celsius rather than anything to much lower
0:10:37 > 0:10:41than that I think rurally maybe down to a one or a zero here or there.
0:10:41 > 0:10:43Tomorrow morning, some sunshine to start the day.
0:10:43 > 0:10:45I don't think it is going to last but here and there
0:10:45 > 0:10:47you will see some blue sky.
0:10:47 > 0:10:50Not the blue sky that we saw today, you won't see anywhere near as much,
0:10:50 > 0:10:52but is still not a bad picture.
0:10:52 > 0:10:54However, going through the afternoon, the cloud will build
0:10:54 > 0:10:57and towards the tail end of the day one of two places will
0:10:57 > 0:10:59will see some light rain.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01The temperature is getting better, seven and a Celsius.
