:00:40. > :00:42.Not an accident but the result of a total disregard of

:00:43. > :00:45.Leaving a two-year-old without her father and a family

:00:46. > :00:56.Bem was the most fun loving and hard working man.

:00:57. > :01:02.The sentence given for those responsible for Ben's death

:01:03. > :01:11.and there abhorrent actions is nothing compared to

:01:12. > :01:15.the life sentence my family and I got on the 10th of September 2014.

:01:16. > :01:18.That was the day when he went to work and did not return

:01:19. > :01:26.He fell from the roof of a shed whilst working at a site near

:01:27. > :01:33.Arriving at the court hearing this morning, the Brothers

:01:34. > :01:35.Christopher and Robert Brown were jailed for 20 months

:01:36. > :01:37.after they admitted safety failings and perverting the course

:01:38. > :01:45.This man, the boss of the company which

:01:46. > :01:52.contracted out the work was sentenced to a year in prison.

:01:53. > :01:59.Handing down the sentences, the judge went through the list of

:02:00. > :02:01.safety failings that led to the death of Ben Edge.

:02:02. > :02:04.Not only was there a failure to keep him safe, it

:02:05. > :02:06.was the attempt to cover up what happened.

:02:07. > :02:09.Another worker was told to go and get harnesses so they look

:02:10. > :02:11.like safety equipment was there and he had

:02:12. > :02:14.Anything to say about what happened that day?

:02:15. > :02:18.He too was on the roof from which his colleague fell.

:02:19. > :02:20.He tried to help by giving first aid but then

:02:21. > :02:22.followed orders designed to shift the blame.

:02:23. > :02:24.Why was it that you covered up what happened, Mr Heap?

:02:25. > :02:26.Among those in court today for the sentencing,

:02:27. > :02:29.some who grew up with the friend they will not grow old

:02:30. > :02:34.There are still two years gone and it is hard.

:02:35. > :02:36.His parents told me the regard what happened

:02:37. > :02:37.and the attempt to cover it

:02:38. > :02:42.They will have the rest of their lives with their

:02:43. > :02:45.They are probabaly still in their early 30s.

:02:46. > :02:48.Ten months, that is all our Ben's life was

:02:49. > :02:51.As in, they will only serve ten months?

:02:52. > :02:56.Yes, ten months is nothing, is it, for what they've

:02:57. > :02:59.They say they will never forgive but they

:03:00. > :03:07.Hilda Parker is an expert on health and safety at work.

:03:08. > :03:10.Earlier, I asked her how many people die every year -

:03:11. > :03:14.through failings in this and other welfare issues.

:03:15. > :03:20.It is many more than most people think.

:03:21. > :03:23.About 144 deaths are reported to the HSC and that will

:03:24. > :03:26.In addition to that, there are workers

:03:27. > :03:30.who are killed when they are driving on the roads,

:03:31. > :03:34.which are not reported in their figures.

:03:35. > :03:39.If you add all the members of the public who are killed by

:03:40. > :03:42.work-related activities and about 300 people a year who kill

:03:43. > :03:45.themselves because they are so stressed by work, that comes to

:03:46. > :03:49.Is the notion of health and safety gone mad completely

:03:50. > :03:58.There is not too much health and safety, there is too little.

:03:59. > :04:02.What advice would you give to somebody who goes to work

:04:03. > :04:05.and goes to work every day, went to work this morning and does not

:04:06. > :04:08.It is really important that people do not do things

:04:09. > :04:11.that they do not think are safe, that they report them.

:04:12. > :04:13.We all have the right to refuse work that

:04:14. > :04:20.It is not easy and it may mean you will risk

:04:21. > :04:25.You could try and reported it to the HSC or to the local

:04:26. > :04:27.authority but that is difficult.

:04:28. > :04:29.You have to weigh it up if you really feel unsafe, you

:04:30. > :04:54.really need to protect your life over keeping your job.

:04:55. > :05:02.They said it considered the evidence in detail before deciding to

:05:03. > :05:08.prosecute but the RMT union says the case should never have gone to

:05:09. > :05:11.trial. The transport police have got serious questions to answer. We will

:05:12. > :05:16.be taking those matters up with those bodies in due course. This

:05:17. > :05:27.case is one that should never have been in court.

:05:28. > :05:29.Firefighters say they've managed to save parts of a historic

:05:30. > :05:31.Grade Two listed building in Lancashire -

:05:32. > :05:34.75 firefighters tackled the blaze at Alston Hall

:05:35. > :05:38.Crews have spent the day trying to make some parts

:06:49. > :06:51.The latest poll suggests a 19 point lead for

:06:52. > :06:56.Some people suggest the only way that Labour can secure places like

:06:57. > :06:58.here in Lancashire is under a new leader.

:06:59. > :07:01.I am leading the party because I was elected to lead the

:07:02. > :07:10.I am determined that we will take the challenge to the Tories on

:07:11. > :07:13.Familiar battle cries from Jeremy Corbyn

:07:14. > :07:15.but the red Rose county is on

:07:16. > :07:19.Conservatives say this is their chance to turn it blue.

:07:20. > :07:22.Because people recognise this Administration has left the council

:07:23. > :07:25.in a mess, financially and in terms of the services they provide.

:07:26. > :07:27.We recognise there needs to be a change

:07:28. > :07:38.and they recognise we are the ones to be able to do it and put things

:07:39. > :07:58.right and hopefully they will vote for us on May 4th.

:07:59. > :08:01.away from the Conservatives in 2013, but four years earlier it was Labour

:08:16. > :08:18.voters here and across the country, and traditional party loyalties are
