:00:00. > 3:59:59are out of the way, will the EU start pursuing a common defence

:00:00. > :00:13.policy? Join me on BBC Two. Police investigating the death

:00:14. > :00:16.of a four-year-old girl in an alleged hit-and-run

:00:17. > :00:19.on Merseyside say a man they were looking

:00:20. > :00:22.for is now in custody. Violet Grace Youens died in hospital

:00:23. > :00:25.after she and her grandmother were hit by a stolen

:00:26. > :00:28.car last Friday. Merseyside Police haven't officially

:00:29. > :00:35.name to the 23-year-old man they've arrested, but it is

:00:36. > :00:39.Aidan McAteer from Prescott, a man police said they wanted

:00:40. > :00:43.to speak to about the incident He's been arrested on suspicion of

:00:44. > :00:49.causing death by dangerous driving and on suspicion of causing serious

:00:50. > :00:55.injury by dangerous driving. Four-year-old Violet Grace Youens

:00:56. > :00:59.was killed in the incident and her grandmother, Angela French

:01:00. > :01:02.was seriously injured. The arrest follows

:01:03. > :01:06.an emotional appeal on social media by Violet Grace's

:01:07. > :01:09.father, Glenn, and another appeal yesterday by Mr McAteer's mother,

:01:10. > :01:15.Alicia, on television and radio. It was thought that

:01:16. > :01:18.Aidan McAteer had travelled abroad after the collision,

:01:19. > :01:21.but Merseyside Police aren't saying when or where

:01:22. > :01:25.he was detained, only that he's being spoken

:01:26. > :01:28.to by Merseyside detectives A man who set his sister on fire

:01:29. > :01:39.using a "petrol cocktail" Stephen Archer from

:01:40. > :01:43.Openshaw in Manchester set his sister Julie on fire last

:01:44. > :01:46.February, after falsely accused her of murdering their father

:01:47. > :01:49.and doctoring his will. Her 19-year-old daughter escaped

:01:50. > :01:55.with minor injuries after jumping from an upstairs

:01:56. > :01:57.window of the house. Mr Archer will be

:01:58. > :02:01.sentenced tomorrow. Police used cutting

:02:02. > :02:02.equipment to separate anti-fracking protesters

:02:03. > :02:05.who chained themselves to pipes at an Eddie Stobart

:02:06. > :02:09.depot in Warrington. They claim the firm supplies a shale

:02:10. > :02:12.gas site in Lancashire. Eddie Stobart says one

:02:13. > :02:14.tanker has been there. At least two protesters

:02:15. > :02:19.were arrested. Labour's candidate to be

:02:20. > :02:21.the first Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region

:02:22. > :02:24.launched his manifesto today. Steve Rotheram said, if elected,

:02:25. > :02:26.a main priority would be tackling He also pledged to create degree

:02:27. > :02:33.level apprenticeships to address Children are being put

:02:34. > :02:41.at risk of sexual abuse because Greater Manchester Police

:02:42. > :02:44.are taking up to five months to examine computers seized

:02:45. > :02:48.from suspected paedophiles. That's one of the findings

:02:49. > :02:50.of a report She says in the past few years

:02:51. > :02:55.the number of child sex offences in Greater Manchester has

:02:56. > :02:57.quadrupled, and the number Our social affairs correspondent

:02:58. > :03:02.Clare Fallon reports. When this woman went to police

:03:03. > :03:06.to say her 13-year-old daughter was being groomed

:03:07. > :03:08.by a man in his 30s, she hoped and expected

:03:09. > :03:12.the response would be quick. She had evidence on her daughter's

:03:13. > :03:15.mobile phone and tablet, The 2012 Rochdale grooming trial,

:03:16. > :03:22.Greater Manchester Police said, things have changed,

:03:23. > :03:25.we've learned lessons, but you went

:03:26. > :03:31.to the police a year later. It wasn't that they didn't believe

:03:32. > :03:35.us, I think they just didn't have the funding to investigate

:03:36. > :03:37.the tablet and the telephone. I think it was basically

:03:38. > :03:43.in a room with thousands of others It was like, well,

:03:44. > :03:49.you'll have to just wait your turn. According to a report out today

:03:50. > :03:53.on the sexual exploitation of children in Greater Manchester,

:03:54. > :03:57.even though things are improving, in some cases, it's taking

:03:58. > :04:01.five months for police to examine In those five months,

:04:02. > :04:08.how many more children could potentially be

:04:09. > :04:12.groomed and abused? In the time it took police

:04:13. > :04:17.to check the phone and tablet, the man who groomed this

:04:18. > :04:20.woman's daughter I feel absolutely

:04:21. > :04:27.horrified that because of the no action at the beginning

:04:28. > :04:31.that another child was groomed. On occasion, I accept

:04:32. > :04:36.that there will have been times when computers and

:04:37. > :04:39.tablets should have been We've made our triage system process

:04:40. > :04:43.much more robust now which reduces the chance

:04:44. > :04:45.of that from happening. We've invested in that

:04:46. > :04:48.department which has brought those backlogs down but we've

:04:49. > :04:50.still got more to do. This is something that only

:04:51. > :04:53.going to get worse really, because the way that the Internet

:04:54. > :04:56.is so advanced now and, you know, kids are WhatsApping

:04:57. > :04:58.and they don't know The Stockport MP Ann Coffey

:04:59. > :05:09.wrote today's report. I asked her why the numbers

:05:10. > :05:12.of paedophiles and grooming cases We're reporting it better,

:05:13. > :05:19.we're more aware of it. Because part of the problem has

:05:20. > :05:21.been victims in the past were blamed for their

:05:22. > :05:24.own exploitation. they were told they were making

:05:25. > :05:27.lifestyle choices and therefore were reluctant to report

:05:28. > :05:32.the sexual abuse against them because they felt they

:05:33. > :05:34.wouldn't be believed. I believe that has changed

:05:35. > :05:37.and the evidence of that is the increased reporting

:05:38. > :05:43.of child sexual exploitation. Although the headline to this

:05:44. > :05:45.is a little bit alarming, to say the least, actually

:05:46. > :05:47.you could construe this as a positive story

:05:48. > :05:49.in a sense, that we are more aware of things

:05:50. > :05:53.like this and more ready It is a very positive story

:05:54. > :05:57.because also9 more children are being identified

:05:58. > :06:00.of being at risk of child sexual

:06:01. > :06:02.exportation which means you can get in there and stop it

:06:03. > :06:07.happening which is very, very important because, as we know,

:06:08. > :06:11.victims spend all their lives being traumatised by the sexual abuse

:06:12. > :06:15.that has happened to them. To prevent sexual abuse happening

:06:16. > :06:18.to families is critical. Having said all that, the case

:06:19. > :06:22.we just heard of a delay that enabled the paedophile

:06:23. > :06:25.to stay as large and to abuse somebody else

:06:26. > :06:28.is clearly nothing positive. Have the police got the resources

:06:29. > :06:33.that they need to tackle this? Much more fraud is being committed

:06:34. > :06:37.online and this is a serious resource issue for police

:06:38. > :06:42.forces who need skilled staff and funding into their digital

:06:43. > :06:45.investigation unit to deal with the tsunami of online

:06:46. > :06:51.sexual grooming that is happening. Ann Coffey, thank you very much

:06:52. > :06:53.for your time this evening. The owner of the Cumbrian zoo

:06:54. > :07:00.where nearly 500 animals died in three years today appealed

:07:01. > :07:03.against its closure. The news came as the company

:07:04. > :07:06.which wants to take over its licence gave Yunus Mulla exclusive access

:07:07. > :07:10.to the zoo. A baby giraffe,

:07:11. > :07:12.the latest attraction This is what the troubled zoo

:07:13. > :07:18.wants us all to see. Come and see everything we've done,

:07:19. > :07:21.come and see the improvements. So 11 weeks is not long, but we have

:07:22. > :07:26.made some dramatic changes. Nearly 500 animals had

:07:27. > :07:29.died in four years. This emaciated kangaroo

:07:30. > :07:32.just one example. Inspectors said there

:07:33. > :07:36.was uncontrolled breeding, poor veterinary care

:07:37. > :07:40.and overcrowding and the owner, Last month, a closure notice

:07:41. > :07:46.was issued and the owner, Today, David Gill appealed

:07:47. > :07:51.against the decisions made by the local authority

:07:52. > :07:55.that will effectively keep the zoo open

:07:56. > :07:59.beyond next week's closure deadline. The new management company has

:08:00. > :08:02.applied for its own license but one animal rights

:08:03. > :08:05.group questions links between the new company

:08:06. > :08:08.and the zoo owner. The same people who have been

:08:09. > :08:11.involved have made this application and we cannot just simply

:08:12. > :08:17.pass animals' lives In 2013, Sarah McClay was mauled

:08:18. > :08:22.to death by a tiger and the zoo was fined almost

:08:23. > :08:24.?500,000 for breaches Plans are at an advanced stage

:08:25. > :08:30.to buy the zoo outright and the new company insists it has severed

:08:31. > :08:34.all links with the current owner. I have never claimed

:08:35. > :08:37.to be an animal manager. But what I do claim to be

:08:38. > :08:42.is passionate about this place, passionate about the animals

:08:43. > :08:47.that are here. Here they may be passionate

:08:48. > :08:49.about the zoo and the animals, but ultimately, the decision on its

:08:50. > :08:58.future will not be theirs to make. Football and Manchester City Women

:08:59. > :09:01.have reached the last four of the Champions League

:09:02. > :09:04.for the first time, Lucy Bronze scored the only

:09:05. > :09:09.goal of the match, City face three-time winners

:09:10. > :09:14.Lyon in the last four. Those ties will take place

:09:15. > :09:18.on the final two weekends of April. Salford Red Devils continued

:09:19. > :09:21.their impressive start to the season Michael Dobson opened the scoring

:09:22. > :09:26.with a penalty before scored two tries and a further goal

:09:27. > :09:31.to seal the victory. The win moves them up to third

:09:32. > :09:35.in the table, on ten points - level with league leaders

:09:36. > :09:48.Castleford Tigers We've had a lot of cloud around two

:09:49. > :09:52.this afternoon. Heavy rain in places but having said that, we have seen

:09:53. > :09:56.higher than average temperatures. 17 degrees in Nantwich in Cheshire this

:09:57. > :10:00.afternoon but over the next couple of days, we will see temperatures

:10:01. > :10:05.gradually falling away to where they should be for this time of year. For

:10:06. > :10:10.tonight, however, lots of cloud around still and we are likely to

:10:11. > :10:14.see that rainfall. It is going to be a mild night underneath the cloud

:10:15. > :10:19.and a bit of a breeze as well. Temperatures staying as high as 11

:10:20. > :10:24.or 12 degrees so for tomorrow, we are hoping we should see some sunny

:10:25. > :10:28.spells through the afternoon but we start off once again quite cloudy,

:10:29. > :10:32.quite damp. Lots of rain around initially as we head into the

:10:33. > :10:37.afternoon, a stiff south-westerly breeze hopefully blowing away the

:10:38. > :10:41.rain and showers to the other side of the Pennines. We should be left

:10:42. > :10:47.with brighter spells through the afternoon. It will feel a tad cooler

:10:48. > :10:51.than today. I is a 15 degrees tomorrow. Tomorrow night looks to be

:10:52. > :10:56.a dryer night than tonight. Clear skies. We had into the weekend with

:10:57. > :11:00.low pressure on Saturday with showers. Sunday looks to be the

:11:01. > :11:03.better day of the weekend and the outlook, 11 or 12 degrees.

:11:04. > :11:10.time of year. The chance of a shower on Saturday. Sunday will be dry.

:11:11. > :11:17.Hello, it will cool off over the next few days but that's not

:11:18. > :11:22.unusual, given how warm it was today. This was London. We just had

:11:23. > :11:23.the warmest March day
