:00:24. > :00:26.But today that same judge locked Bashir up declaring,

:00:33. > :00:35.Mustafa Bashir arrived at court today knowing he had
:00:36. > :00:40.Last month he'd narrowly avoided jail when he admitted
:00:41. > :00:43.attacking his former wife with a cricket bat and
:00:44. > :00:48.The judge suspended an 18-month prison sentence, partly because he'd
:00:49. > :00:51.been told Bashir was about to sign a contract with Leicestershire
:00:52. > :00:58.The club then revealed they'd never heard of Bashir.
:00:59. > :01:03.And so today the 33-year-old was ordered back before the same
:01:04. > :01:08.Bashir was represented in court by a new barrister
:01:09. > :01:12.who said his client had not intended to mislead anyone.
:01:13. > :01:15.There had been a series of misunderstandings.
:01:16. > :01:17.Judge Richard Mansell was having none of that.
:01:18. > :01:22.He said there had been no series of misunderstandings and said,
:01:23. > :01:25."I was fundamentally misled by you as to your
:01:26. > :01:30.He said he had no hesitation in now imposing an immediate prison term,
:01:31. > :01:33.something he said he would have done originally if he had been aware

:01:47. > :01:48.Meanwhile, Judge Mansell addressed criticisms made of him over his
:01:49. > :01:56.He'd said Bashir's victim was "not particularly vulnerable due
:01:57. > :02:01.Today he said he wanted to make clear he'd always
:02:02. > :02:05.considered her to be vulnerable, but sentencing guidelines set out
:02:06. > :02:08.clearly different levels of vulnerability which judges have
:02:09. > :02:12.to take into account when sentencing.
:02:13. > :02:14.Through police, Bashir's victim said she was satisfied
:02:15. > :02:21.She feels she has received justice and has looked at the transcripts
:02:22. > :02:31.from the original sentencing and also what has been said
:02:32. > :02:33.Bashir, meantime, may be investigated for the separate
:02:34. > :02:38.offence of perverting the course of justice.
:02:39. > :02:42.Six men from Preston have been jailed for a total of 13 and a half
:02:43. > :02:45.years after committing a ?400,000 insurance fraud.
:02:46. > :02:48.The men worked together in their professional roles
:02:49. > :02:52.The crimes were discovered when solicitor Nadir Suleman
:02:53. > :02:55.had his house raided and the police found documents linking him
:02:56. > :02:59.and the others to numerous fraudulent claims.

:03:22. > :03:24.A court heard Paul Roddy had MS and was vulnerable.
:03:25. > :03:26.But instead of caring for him, Christopher McAllister subjected him
:03:27. > :03:35.Paul Roddy was a father-of four, a stubborn but kind man
:03:36. > :03:41.who according to his family loved drinking tea and watching Emmerdale.
:03:42. > :03:44.But he suffered from multiple sclerosis and was not coping.
:03:45. > :03:49.The two men lived in neighbouring flats on this street in Gorton.
:03:50. > :03:51.The court heard Paul Roddy was vulnerable.
:03:52. > :03:54.Local youths had been taking advantage of him
:03:55. > :03:57.So Christopher McAllister moved into his flat offering
:03:58. > :04:08.McAllister claimed Carer's Allowance.
:04:09. > :04:11.But the court heard he was not motivated by money, nor
:04:12. > :04:15.When Paul was found dead in his bed in December 2015,
:04:16. > :04:18.he had injuries all over his head and body and was
:04:19. > :04:21.He had been subjected to a serious of violent attacks.
:04:22. > :04:24.The frailty of Paul, based on the injuries
:04:25. > :04:34.That period prior to his death must have been very,
:04:35. > :04:39.Jailing Christopher McAllister for ten years, His Honour Mr
:04:40. > :04:47.Justice Mark Turner said, "When you let Paul Roddy live
:04:48. > :04:50."with you, it was out of the frying pan and into the fire.
:04:51. > :04:53."He was vulnerable dependent on your care, but your behaviour
:04:54. > :05:00.Police and other agencies are now awaiting results
:05:01. > :05:05.Paul's sister is campaigning for a change in the law to ensure
:05:06. > :05:10.anyone claiming Carer's Allowance is subject to official checks.
:05:11. > :05:13.Everyone was stunned that people could do this sort of thing
:05:14. > :05:16.without having any checks, or monitoring that they were
:05:17. > :05:18.a suitable person to look after vulnerable people.
:05:19. > :05:22.Last night Paul's family lit candles in his memory.
:05:23. > :05:25.They hope his legacy will be to ensure that this never happens
