:07:28. > :07:32.Five years ago he was told he had bowel cancer and shortly afterwards
:07:33. > :07:37.Today, he was trying to raise awareness of his illness.
:07:38. > :07:41.I have lost so many friends to bowel cancer and other cancers,
:07:42. > :07:45.it is horrible and I think the more that can be done to raise
:07:46. > :07:51.Ben, a keen runner, has completed 24 marathons since his diagnosis.
:07:52. > :07:54.He was training for one when he first experienced symptoms
:07:55. > :08:00.such as loose stools and unexpected weight loss.
:08:01. > :08:03.If we can try and help other people understand bowel cancer symptoms,
:08:04. > :08:07.the earlier people are diagnosed, in 90% of cases, if it is caught
:08:08. > :08:15.Bowel cancer is the nation's second biggest cancer killer,
:08:16. > :08:20.If you're registered with a GP and aged 60-74, you will
:08:21. > :08:22.receive a test in the post for free every two years,
:08:23. > :08:25.but here in the North West on average only 53% of people
:08:26. > :08:30.One, people might be embarrassed to do the test, two,
:08:31. > :08:33.people might feel well, so there feel there is no need to do
:08:34. > :08:38.the test and three, fear, people might not want to know.
:08:39. > :08:41.Ben and his family were told last year that his cancer had returned.
:08:42. > :08:46.He's currently undergoing further treatment to prolong his life.
:08:47. > :08:50.He has defied all statistics because normally statistics
:08:51. > :08:55.for stage four disease is about two and half years so he has
:08:56. > :08:57.doubled his statistics and one of the main reasons
:08:58. > :09:03.We want to make sure other people enjoy their lives and don't have
:09:04. > :09:07.to be facing five-year battle with stage four cancer.
:09:08. > :09:10.A campaign to widen the age group that are sent for free screening
:09:11. > :09:13.tests, but in the meantime Ben Ashworth is deternmined to stay
