0:00:13 > 0:00:14Good evening.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17Charities in Liverpool have today been thanked for helping people

0:00:17 > 0:00:20struggling with a range of problems as public spending is reduced.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23This year's Civic Service was dedicated to those who've

0:00:23 > 0:00:25supported the most vulnerable.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Our reporter, Katie Walderman, met a former soldier who says

0:00:28 > 0:00:32one charity saved his life.

0:00:32 > 0:00:34Sef was 16 when he joined the Army.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36But the real battle began when he left.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39I thought I wouldn't be able to have any purpose in life

0:00:39 > 0:00:40then, or do any good.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44So I started getting feelings back of suicide again, which I had

0:00:44 > 0:00:47in the early stages of PTSD.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49And I knew that something had to be done.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53He turned to Tom Harrison House, and he now works for the charity

0:00:53 > 0:00:56that helped him beat his addictions.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59They've been a godsend, a life-saver, to tell you the truth.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02As soon as I plucked up the courage to walk into Tom Harrison House for

0:01:02 > 0:01:06an assessment, I felt so at home.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09The camaraderie was still there.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12It has given me purpose back, to have empathy and support

0:01:12 > 0:01:15for fellow comrades.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18I've seen them struggle.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21I can put myself in their shoes.

0:01:21 > 0:01:22I know that there is hope.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25And today the charity, and countless others in Liverpool,

0:01:25 > 0:01:28have been thanked for the support they've given the city's people

0:01:28 > 0:01:31in times of austerity.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34This year's Lord Mayor's Annual Civic Service has been

0:01:34 > 0:01:36dedicated specially to them.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39In this age of austerity when we've got massive cutbacks,

0:01:39 > 0:01:41I think the charities have really stepped up to the mark,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44in this city and others, to make it safe for people.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48Should it be down to the likes of charities to pick up the tab?

0:01:48 > 0:01:50Shouldn't local charities and the government be doing more?

0:01:50 > 0:01:53I don't think government or local government is ever going to be able

0:01:53 > 0:01:56to pick up all the pieces that we need to treat

0:01:56 > 0:02:01people properly.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05But it's important that charities carry on doing that and I just

0:02:05 > 0:02:09want to thank them for what they've done over a long period of time.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12As council budgets continue to tighten, it appears the work

0:02:12 > 0:02:16of these charities is invaluable.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19An 86-year-old man has died after being struck by a van

0:02:19 > 0:02:21while walking in Swinton.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25Police are appealing for witnesses after the collision on Worsley Road

0:02:25 > 0:02:27at 19:30 last night.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30It's thought the vehicle did stop at the scene.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33Two teenagers are recovering after being shot near

0:02:33 > 0:02:35a church on Merseyside.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38A boy and girl, both aged 17, escaped with minor injuries

0:02:38 > 0:02:42after being fired at with a shotgun in Netherton on Friday night.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45Police are examining CCTV to try to find out

0:02:45 > 0:02:47who was responsible.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50Three North West councils are facing criticism after asking newsagents

0:02:50 > 0:02:54not to sell The Sun newspaper, because of the lies it published

0:02:54 > 0:02:57about the Hillsborough tragedy.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01Liverpool, Wirral and West Lancashire Councils are urging

0:03:01 > 0:03:03retailers not to stock the paper.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05Campaigners say it should never be forgiven.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09But some Conservative politicians say there should be

0:03:09 > 0:03:10freedom to choose.

0:03:10 > 0:03:16It was a long time ago now.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19How many of the staff are still on The Sun?

0:03:19 > 0:03:21I believe an individual has the right to decide

0:03:21 > 0:03:22which newspaper they want to read.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25The fact is that they printed a lie that had massive impacts

0:03:25 > 0:03:27throughout the 90s on the economy of Merseyside,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29and the people of Merseyside.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32As you may've heard in the national news, the North West MEP

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Paul Nuttall has annouced he's going to stand in Ukip's

0:03:34 > 0:03:36leadership election.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39A history lecturer born and brought up in Bootle,

0:03:39 > 0:03:42he joined Ukip 12 years ago and, until recently, was the party's

0:03:42 > 0:03:44deputy leader under Nigel Farage.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47The 39-year-old says he can heal the party's divisions and stop

0:03:47 > 0:03:50it destroying itself.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52Ukip is facing an existential crisis.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56What's happened over the summer has put us on - we could be

0:03:56 > 0:03:59getting onto a spiral which we couldn't get off.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03But I believe that I am the man to bring the factions together.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05To create unity within the party.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08And to build and restructure and get us ready for the year,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11for the coming challenges.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15Firefighters have spent a third day tackling a huge mound of burning

0:04:15 > 0:04:18scrap metal and plastic at Seaforth Docks near Bootle.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21When the blaze was at its height, people living nearby

0:04:21 > 0:04:22were advised to keep their doors and windows closed.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26Fire crews today broke up the pile of re-cycling material and say

0:04:26 > 0:04:29the fire is now under control.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Dozens of school crossings in Manchester could lose

0:04:32 > 0:04:35their "lollipop" patrols if councillors approve

0:04:35 > 0:04:37a cost-cutting option which would save half a million pounds.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40The city council is looking at new traffic calming measures

0:04:40 > 0:04:43which it believes would remove the need for lollipop staff.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47It's also discussing whether to get rid of the Town Hall's giant Santa.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Football, and Jose Mourinho suffered a humiliating

0:04:49 > 0:04:53return to Stamford Bridge as Manchester United were beaten 4-0

0:04:53 > 0:04:58by his old club Chelsea.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00Earlier, Manchester City's 1-1 draw at Southampton

0:05:00 > 0:05:03put them back at the top of the Premier League table.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05But it's only goal difference which keeps them ahead

0:05:05 > 0:05:07of Arsenal and Liverpool.

0:05:07 > 0:05:08Time now for a look at the weather.

0:05:09 > 0:05:10Good evening.
