:01:37. > :01:38.The Coercive Control Act came into force exactly
:01:39. > :01:40.a year ago today and, because of it, Mandy's
:01:41. > :01:51.She has been speaking exclusively to our reporter, Laura Jones.
:01:52. > :01:53.Looking forward to a brighter New Year
:01:54. > :02:00.For Mandy and her four children, it is a fresh start,
:02:01. > :02:05.away from her abusive and violent ex-partner.
:02:06. > :02:10.So, Zack was about four and Lee smashed the door on Zack,
:02:11. > :02:17.He hurt Zack. He would sometimes pick
:02:18. > :02:22.up Leon and throw him at the top of the stairs.
:02:23. > :02:27.He would not even have to touch you for you to be terrified.
:02:28. > :02:30.His language and his body language. He is just so big.
:02:31. > :02:32.Although Mandy's former partner was a very angry man, he was
:02:33. > :02:40.controlling every detail of Mandy and the children's lives.
:02:41. > :02:42.It took years, and many attempts, before she finally
:02:43. > :02:49.The thing with the control thing is that
:02:50. > :02:53.they get in your head and convince you that you would never be able
:02:54. > :02:56.to have another partner. I am actually struggling.
:02:57. > :03:01.He said that I could never cope and look
:03:02. > :03:09.I would never have any money and all that sort of stuff.
:03:10. > :03:12.I never had a car. He used to take the car.
:03:13. > :03:14.I couldn't have a car, because he put it in his name.
:03:15. > :03:17.Christmas and New Year can often be a difficult, and often
:03:18. > :03:23.dangerous, time of year for those living with domestic abuse.
:03:24. > :03:26.But this year, for the first time, something has changed.
:03:27. > :03:28.It means the sort of behaviour Mandy is describing is now
:03:29. > :03:35.That new law is called the Coercive Control Act
:03:36. > :03:39.and it is because of it that Mandy's ex, Lee Coleman, is now
:03:40. > :03:41.serving three years in prison for his bullying and controlling
:03:42. > :03:44.It is a good result for Gloucestershire Police,
:03:45. > :03:54.but investigating this sort of activity is tough.
:03:55. > :04:05.It is a very different matter for the police to understand and get the
:04:06. > :04:13.head round. If someone is injured and it is tangible, we can ask that.
:04:14. > :04:18.We can deal with it then. But it is much more difficult when someone is
:04:19. > :04:24.being controlled, maybe in terms of the money and what they are doing on
:04:25. > :04:29.the computer, that is much more challenging in terms of
:04:30. > :04:32.investigating. It has been a very difficult year for Mandy but she is
:04:33. > :04:38.determined to pick the past behind her and focus on the future. They
:04:39. > :04:42.speaking out, she is hoping to help others in the same situation have a
