:00:10. > :00:12.Welcome to BBC Points West with Alex Lovell and David Garmston.

:00:13. > :00:14.My first chance to wish you a Happy New Year.

:00:15. > :00:19.A new craze in the Cheddar Gorge - but as a million people watch

:00:20. > :00:24.online, the police warn of the dangers.

:00:25. > :00:30.They are putting themselves at risk. I mean, you have sheer rock faces

:00:31. > :00:34.there that if they hit at that speed, they are going to cause

:00:35. > :00:35.themselves in serious injuries, but also putting other road users at

:00:36. > :00:41.risk as well. Anger on the railways

:00:42. > :00:45.as commuters claim the service they get doesn't justify

:00:46. > :00:51.the increase in fares. And the campaign to honour a former

:00:52. > :01:03.Dam Buster after his name was left And football's transfer window is

:01:04. > :01:07.now open, so who will our clubs be buying and selling?

:01:08. > :01:12.Look at this as a way of getting down the Cheddar Gorge -

:01:13. > :01:15.on a three-wheeled cycle, sliding through the

:01:16. > :01:21.A million people have watched these pictures online -

:01:22. > :01:24.including shots of the little tricycles narrowly missing cars

:01:25. > :01:30.It may be a speed kick for those involved but local people say "drift

:01:31. > :01:34.triking" is dangerous and now the police are involved.

:01:35. > :01:40.Our Somerset Correspondent Clinton Rogers reports.

:01:41. > :01:43.When they put up this sign, they probably

:01:44. > :01:54.A new craze born - in New Zealand - sweeping the UK and now arriving

:01:55. > :02:03.at a gorge near you, much to the annoyance of locals.

:02:04. > :02:09.The parish council absolutely deplores it and we really can't

:02:10. > :02:12.understand why these people should take such terrible risks with their

:02:13. > :02:15.own lives and also endanger the lives of ordinary law-abiding

:02:16. > :02:17.motorists coming up the other way. This video was filmed

:02:18. > :02:19.in the Gorge and posted Already a million

:02:20. > :02:24.people have seen it. The Gorge has always been a Mecca

:02:25. > :02:27.for extreme sports - So called "boy racers" bring

:02:28. > :02:39.their cars here on a regular basis. And now this - and whether it's

:02:40. > :02:55.sport or antisocial behaviour I spoke to someone from the trike

:02:56. > :02:59.drifting community who helped to organise the event here. He didn't

:03:00. > :03:03.want to be interviewed on television but he did tell me they had warning

:03:04. > :03:08.signs out on the day and they had spotters at either end of the gorge

:03:09. > :03:13.looking out for traffic. All sports, he went on, have inherent dangers.

:03:14. > :03:16.It is shocking because there you have got an incident where one of

:03:17. > :03:18.the trikes have swerved in front of a car and the car has to take

:03:19. > :03:18.evasive action. But the police who have now seen

:03:19. > :03:29.the footage say - potentially - Certainly based on what I am viewing

:03:30. > :03:32.here, we will act on this information and we will start an

:03:33. > :03:37.investigation in relation to what's actually happened and been recorded.

:03:38. > :03:39.So there could be prosecutions? Potentially, yes.

:03:40. > :03:42.As for stopping it happening, ideas range from speed humps

:03:43. > :03:43.to cattle grids to anti-skid road surfacing.

:03:44. > :03:51.And it's a subject that's got many of you talking

:03:52. > :03:56.Some people think it looks like fun, but others disagree.

:03:57. > :03:59.Carol Atkins said she saw it happening and thought

:04:00. > :04:07.Paul Jeffrey said he nearly ran a trike over as it came shooting

:04:08. > :04:11.around a bend on the wrong side of the road.

:04:12. > :04:17.Go to our Facebook page if you'd like to join in that discussion.

:04:18. > :04:22.Police are still questioning two men, arrested on suspicion of murder

:04:23. > :04:25.after a man was found stabbed to death on Christmas Eve.

:04:26. > :04:28.Mohammed Abdurezak's body was discovered in Siston

:04:29. > :04:32.Detectives investigating his death are searching two

:04:33. > :04:39.A third man arrested has been released on bail.

:04:40. > :04:42.Unions claim West Country rail travellers aren't getting

:04:43. > :04:47.They're warning that the latest new year fare increase -

:04:48. > :04:51.set by the Government at 2.3% - outstrips any growth in wages.

:04:52. > :04:54.Ministers say the fare increase helps to pay for the biggest

:04:55. > :04:58.round of improvements to rail services in a century.

:04:59. > :05:00.Scott Ellis is at Temple Meads for us now.

:05:01. > :05:12.Yes, good evening. ?40 billion is being invested in the rail network

:05:13. > :05:16.at the moment, the Government tried to shift the burden of that cost a

:05:17. > :05:20.wave of general taxpayers and onto rail passengers themselves, so there

:05:21. > :05:26.will be more increases but to .3% was seen as being a bit sharp by

:05:27. > :05:33.some people, it is linked to the price index rise, a spike after the

:05:34. > :05:36.vote to leave the EU but people are saying it is a rise too high and it

:05:37. > :05:37.means tickets are going up much faster than wages.

:05:38. > :05:41.The latest price hike affects 40% of all rail ticket sales.

:05:42. > :05:44.Those controlled by the Government rather than the train operators.

:05:45. > :05:52.Most passengers we spoke to regard trains as over priced.

:05:53. > :05:59.I think the service is shocking. I don't use it too often just for that

:06:00. > :06:02.reason. I think I'm lucky that particular line Iron Man hasn't been

:06:03. > :06:12.as badly hit as some others. It is disgusting. Can you afford it? No.

:06:13. > :06:17.Is the rise justified? No. I buy sensibly so I am not too angry.

:06:18. > :06:18.There is nothing I can do, the option is take the bus and commute

:06:19. > :06:20.for an extra hour. The rise means

:06:21. > :06:22.the cost for a return ticket That 150-mile round trip in a car -

:06:23. > :06:27.costed at 40p a mile - The train operators would say buying

:06:28. > :06:38.in advantage is cheaper. One passenger watchdog says that

:06:39. > :06:48.highlights just what a bad deal The trains are 40 years old, the

:06:49. > :06:53.service is unreliable, one in four trains through the great Western

:06:54. > :06:58.central area is running late at the moment and it is the most

:06:59. > :07:01.overcrowded root in the country to Paddington, so people haven't had a

:07:02. > :07:02.fair deal, they have been asked to pay for the future without the

:07:03. > :07:03.future having arrived. Electrification

:07:04. > :07:05.here in the west has But Network rail says

:07:06. > :07:07.signalling's been improved. New hybrid trains will be

:07:08. > :07:10.pulling into west country And there'll be two

:07:11. > :07:13.new services to London - Improvements the train companies

:07:14. > :07:24.admit are desperately needed. The growth in the number of people

:07:25. > :07:30.using the railway has been enormous. It certainly what was and -- not

:07:31. > :07:33.what was anticipated a decade ago which means every single time

:07:34. > :07:36.something goes wrong with the infrastructure, far less than it

:07:37. > :07:40.used to, means big impact on customers which is why we need to

:07:41. > :07:43.improve the reliability even more, improve the signal system, so we can

:07:44. > :07:46.deliver more on-time services and more of them with more capacity.

:07:47. > :07:47.Trains here are more popular than ever.

:07:48. > :07:54.Suggesting many are dependent on trains -

:07:55. > :07:56.and have no alternative other than to absorb price hikes.

:07:57. > :07:59.It's our first full programme of 2017 and it's lovely

:08:00. > :08:08.I hope you have avoided the Christmas cold, do excuse my croaky

:08:09. > :08:12.voice. But stay with us, there is lot more to come.

:08:13. > :08:17.The campaign to get the last Dam Buster knighted.

:08:18. > :08:23.And New Year celebrations may be over but ours have only just begun,

:08:24. > :08:28.as the programme is 60 this year. And later, we will take you behind

:08:29. > :08:33.the scenes, access all areas as we delve into the Points West archives.

:08:34. > :08:36.One thing that's changed for the worst over the last 60 years

:08:37. > :08:38.is the number of people suffering from Type 2 Diabetes,

:08:39. > :08:41.which is linked to eating too many sweet things and not

:08:42. > :08:46.Now as we weigh in after the excesses of Christmas -

:08:47. > :08:48.everybody living in Bristol is being challenged to radically cut

:08:49. > :08:55.Dave Harvey's been to meet a woman who took Type 2

:08:56. > :09:06.When he actually said the words, "You know have diabetes,

:09:07. > :09:08."you have gone over that line, you have got type 2

:09:09. > :09:10.diabetes," I thought, right, this is it, I've

:09:11. > :09:25.I decided to give up a sugar completely.

:09:26. > :09:26.I decided to give up sugar completely.

:09:27. > :09:29.It turned out to be a lot harder than she thought.

:09:30. > :09:31.Sugar is in all kinds of surprising places.

:09:32. > :09:36.I really like my coleslaw, but that's got sugar in it.

:09:37. > :09:39.The big culprit for me initially was the fizzy drinks.

:09:40. > :09:43.This one is a lot healthier, because it's a lot more natural,

:09:44. > :09:46.but it still got just as much sugar in as Coke, so that

:09:47. > :09:52.And quitting sugar was just the half of it.

:09:53. > :09:58.When I first started running, it was literally one-minute run,

:09:59. > :10:05.one minute walk and now I can run for an hour or more.

:10:06. > :10:11.I've done a half marathon, I've done a 10K.

:10:12. > :10:13.After three months of this, Becky went back to her GP.

:10:14. > :10:19.So you were in the range where your blood sugar would have

:10:20. > :10:22.been in the diabetic range and that it gone back

:10:23. > :10:25.been in the diabetic range and now it's gone back completely to normal,

:10:26. > :10:29.Yes, Becky had reversed to diabetes completely.

:10:30. > :10:31.It's remarkable, but not unique and doctors would love more people

:10:32. > :10:35.Approximately 10% of people within our city are at risk

:10:36. > :10:38.of diabetes, those are the ones that we really want to get through.

:10:39. > :10:40.They can do something now to prevent themselves getting

:10:41. > :10:42.diabetes in the future years and that is obviously hugely

:10:43. > :10:44.beneficial to themselves, to their families,

:10:45. > :10:49.to the Health Service and to the overall health of this city.

:10:50. > :11:01.But most of us don't and sweet treats are a daily temptation.

:11:02. > :11:03.So how will sugar smart change all that?

:11:04. > :11:07.This is supposed to be an energy drink, a health drink, rather,

:11:08. > :11:10.but it got 20 grams of sugar in each can.

:11:11. > :11:12.They're starting with students, investigating surprise sugars.

:11:13. > :11:17.It's making sure that water is affordable,

:11:18. > :11:22.We will be doing a lot of promotions around free fruit or free bottled

:11:23. > :11:36.And here's another big signing, Ashton Gate.

:11:37. > :11:39.We would like to make Sugar Smart is to have one member of each

:11:40. > :11:41.of the Bristol sports squads adopting sugar Smart,

:11:42. > :11:43.so a rugby player, of footballer, a basketball player,

:11:44. > :11:45.women's footballer, badminton players...

:11:46. > :11:47.Signing up the sports stars, Jamie Oliver's director

:11:48. > :11:51.They estimate there could be another 5 million people who are either

:11:52. > :11:54.at risk or have it and don't know, so it is wonderful to bring

:11:55. > :12:07.Becky's New Year challenge- to run a marathon. Now that would be sweet.

:12:08. > :12:10.And we will let you know how that campaign goes. Of course, you try to

:12:11. > :12:15.be good and eat healthy things and you find that they have got sugar in

:12:16. > :12:19.them, soup and saw. We were talking, my mother and I, it

:12:20. > :12:21.is really tricky. We might well be doing more on that.

:12:22. > :12:23.The last surviving British Dam Buster has been thrust

:12:24. > :12:27.95-year-old George "Johnny" Johnson, who lives in Bristol,

:12:28. > :12:32.had been nominated for an award, but wasn't included in the list,

:12:33. > :12:44.Andy Howard has been to meet the man himself.

:12:45. > :12:46.is the night which defines Johnny Johnson's life.

:12:47. > :12:49.He was one of 133 men who flew over Germany to bomb dams.

:12:50. > :12:55.More than a third of them never came home.

:12:56. > :13:05.The highest loss of any squadron for one night's operation. And people

:13:06. > :13:12.say to me, where you frightened? How say anyone who has thought that for

:13:13. > :13:17.the first time must be at least a bit apprehensive. If not, they are

:13:18. > :13:25.devoid of emotion or strangers to the truth. The shot that we had

:13:26. > :13:27.heard and felt had gone through the starboard undercarriage, burst a

:13:28. > :13:33.tire en route and then passed through the wing and landed in the

:13:34. > :13:40.roof, just above the navigator's head. How lucky can you get? But it

:13:41. > :13:46.had achieved something. Something which became historical. Johnnie

:13:47. > :13:49.Johnson has seen a lot of things in his long life, but never himself on

:13:50. > :13:57.the front page of a tabloid newspaper. Until today. Campaigners

:13:58. > :14:02.say he should have been in a new years Honours list for his bravery.

:14:03. > :14:06.If I am honoured now, it won't be the me, it will be further squadron

:14:07. > :14:18.and I shall make it quite clear. But if it comes off, I shall ask with

:14:19. > :14:23.due humility, Her Majesty, if I can dedicate it to the 55,573 Bomber

:14:24. > :14:30.Command aircrews that gave their lives for their country during the

:14:31. > :14:36.war and in particular, the 53 of my comrades on 617 squadron on the dams

:14:37. > :14:45.raid. I think she would agree. But whether Johnny is on the Queens list

:14:46. > :14:45.next time remains to be seen. -- the Queen's.

:14:46. > :14:47.What a remarkable man. Well, Paul Walmsley has

:14:48. > :14:51.written to the Queen Paul's own father was in the RAF,

:14:52. > :14:55.and he told us he feels the Dam Busters need

:14:56. > :14:57.to be remembered properly. It would be an honour

:14:58. > :14:59.for the squadron, because the Dam Busters

:15:00. > :15:04.are world known. They were the legendary

:15:05. > :15:06.squadron of World War II. And what did you think

:15:07. > :15:09.when you saw the list of honours Well, I was totally shocked

:15:10. > :15:17.that he has been omitted and I felt He is a war hero, he has done 30

:15:18. > :15:29.years of charity work, mainly for the British Legion

:15:30. > :15:31.and the Royal Air Force benevolent fund and he is a well-respected

:15:32. > :15:35.member of the community. Those are the two things that

:15:36. > :15:40.you are asked about. And I guess you're

:15:41. > :15:41.going to fight on? All right, thank you very much

:15:42. > :15:53.indeed coming on the programme. The January sales have begun

:15:54. > :16:00.for our football clubs now that the transfer

:16:01. > :16:01.window is open. It's a chance to buy,

:16:02. > :16:04.sell and loan players Our sports editor Alistair Durden

:16:05. > :16:16.is here to look at what our clubs What are they doing?

:16:17. > :16:20.It is a frantic time for managers, that is visual, their last chance to

:16:21. > :16:24.do any business, they have to do it all this month and then that is it

:16:25. > :16:25.until the summer, so the pressure is on to strengthen those squads.

:16:26. > :16:28.And for Bristol City, there's a clear need for reinforcements.

:16:29. > :16:30.They're just three points off the Championship relegation zone

:16:31. > :16:33.after yesterday's loss to Reading - a game they led 2-0 at one stage.

:16:34. > :16:37.But it's now nine defeats out of the last ten,

:16:38. > :16:40.and supporters are clear where they want the team

:16:41. > :16:50.Obviously, a striker. If Tammy got injured, I don't know what we will

:16:51. > :16:55.do because we have nothing firing up front apart from him. He will have

:16:56. > :17:00.do look abroad because anyone banging them in in the championship

:17:01. > :17:03.will be extortionate. They need a goalkeeper, an attacking midfielder

:17:04. > :17:05.and they need a 20 goal striker, that's what they need.

:17:06. > :17:08.City are close to getting a striker - Bosnia international Milan Duric

:17:09. > :17:18.And tonight, they have also been linked with Preston defender Bailey

:17:19. > :17:19.right. As for Bristol Rovers,

:17:20. > :17:21.keeping star striker Matty Taylor Manager Darrell Clarke

:17:22. > :17:24.insists he won't sell him, Despite losing yesterday,

:17:25. > :17:30.Rovers are just four points Italian goalkeeper Gianluca Curci is

:17:31. > :17:37.joining them on a week-long trial. Swindon Town's Chairman Lee

:17:38. > :17:39.Power says he expects They're just three points

:17:40. > :17:44.above the relegation zone - Influential midfielder

:17:45. > :17:49.Michael Doughty has been recalled by his parent club Queens Park

:17:50. > :17:53.Rangers. Well, one former player and now

:17:54. > :18:06.pundit expects the Robins I think there's been a lot of talk

:18:07. > :18:10.about experience being missing in the group, so I would expect some

:18:11. > :18:17.players with league one, maybe League two experience, but also Tim

:18:18. > :18:21.and Lee have been to a lot of the Premier League two games, watching

:18:22. > :18:25.the second string outfits and they comprise some players away, maybe

:18:26. > :18:26.from Aston Villa, Tim's former club, on loan, young players, that would

:18:27. > :18:28.be something they would look at. Yeovil have already signed

:18:29. > :18:30.Birmingham forward Jack Storer, while Cheltenham have brought

:18:31. > :18:32.in a couple including Bristol City's He played in yesterday's

:18:33. > :18:37.defeat at Colchester. Manager Gary Johnson is working

:18:38. > :18:41.on bringing experienced goalkeeper Scott Brown back to the club

:18:42. > :18:53.after three years away. All fat and a couple of days, we

:18:54. > :18:59.have four weeks left. Never mind the rest of 2017! Bristol

:19:00. > :19:01.Rugby got a nice Christmas present, didn't they?

:19:02. > :19:04.You wait all season for a Premiership victory and then

:19:05. > :19:07.They won that bottom of the table game with Worcester,

:19:08. > :19:10.and then followed it up with this win over Sale -

:19:11. > :19:13.showing real fight too - coming back from 15 points to nil

:19:14. > :19:19.That's dragged Sale back into the relegation equation.

:19:20. > :19:22.Bristol are still bottom of the table but now only

:19:23. > :19:36.So much, much closer. Before you go, you grew up in Somerset, didn't you?

:19:37. > :19:45.Somerset through and through. Did you watch points west growing up?

:19:46. > :19:53.I was born with a Points West dummy in my mouth. Susan Osman, you were

:19:54. > :19:57.watching? Yes, as we sat around a table to eat

:19:58. > :20:00.our tea every night, there they were.

:20:01. > :20:03.The BBC is celebrating 60 years of local television-news this year.

:20:04. > :20:07.The first broadcasts went live in 1957 from this very building.

:20:08. > :20:10.We're going to be partying throughout 2017 to mark this

:20:11. > :20:17.I've been down in the film vaults to give you a taster of what's to come.

:20:18. > :20:19.# Well, bless my soul, what's wrong with me?

:20:20. > :20:22.# I'm itching like a man on a fuzzy tree...

:20:23. > :20:31.Elvis Presley was All Shook Up and on the box, we saw some great telly.

:20:32. > :20:37.Panorama with Richard Dimbleby, David's dad.

:20:38. > :20:41.Well, whatever the pros and cons of television in schools,

:20:42. > :20:45.at least perhaps it will do one thing and that stop any child

:20:46. > :20:51.wanting to go on looking at television for eight hours a day.

:20:52. > :20:59.For our first news summary, we have film of events in Dorset

:21:00. > :21:04.and Hampshire and news of a parent strike in Cornwall.

:21:05. > :21:07.Armine Sandford presented the first television news for the west.

:21:08. > :21:10.One of the first television reports was about a post office,

:21:11. > :21:15.but Miss Squires, the postmistress, didn't like newfangled TV

:21:16. > :21:18.and bizarrely would only allow her bottom to be filmed.
