:00:00. > :00:08.Welcome to BBC Points West with Alex Lovell and David Garmston.

:00:09. > :00:11.Our main story tonight: Looking for a parking space.

:00:12. > :00:13.Hundreds of protesters are outside the Bath Guildhall as councillors

:00:14. > :00:26.decide where the new Park and Ride will go.

:00:27. > :00:34.Upstairs, the council is hardening the new park and rides will help

:00:35. > :00:42.future proof bath but here the mood is different.

:00:43. > :00:44.Our other headlines tonight: A 75-year-old woman is left

:00:45. > :00:47.like this after an attackers steals her handbag whilst

:00:48. > :00:53.A father's petition for longer sentences for dangerous driving,

:00:54. > :00:55.after the boy racers who killed his son will

:00:56. > :01:01.And a world record for a BMX rider - as he takes us

:01:02. > :01:12.Hundreds of people have gathered outside the Guildhall in Bath

:01:13. > :01:15.tonight to protest against plans for a new Park and Ride.

:01:16. > :01:18.The discussions are now underway on which greenfield site to choose

:01:19. > :01:19.with a vote expected later this evening.

:01:20. > :01:40.It sounds pretty lively. Still they protest and they have been here

:01:41. > :01:44.since 4:30pm although the numbers have dwindled, and still the message

:01:45. > :01:49.remains that they don't want a park and ride to the east. I want to show

:01:50. > :01:56.you some pictures from honourable when it was at its height. We had

:01:57. > :02:02.banners, beekeepers and even bagpipes at one point. They see this

:02:03. > :02:07.as their final chance to tell the council they don't want the park and

:02:08. > :02:13.ride to the east of Bath. Let's have a look at Bath in more detail. There

:02:14. > :02:18.are currently three, to the north and west and south. There has long

:02:19. > :02:23.been talk of a fourth and in the last few years, the council has

:02:24. > :02:27.looked at 21 potential sites. Last week they announced they narrowed it

:02:28. > :02:34.down to just two, both to the east on green belt land and right next to

:02:35. > :02:37.each other. The council wouldn't talk to us before the meeting

:02:38. > :02:43.started but last week when the plans were announced the leader said, this

:02:44. > :02:47.is all about future proofing Bath, that with 7000 new homes and 11,000

:02:48. > :02:51.new jobs, that park and ride would help alleviate the traffic. The

:02:52. > :02:59.protest are certainly don't agree with that. The costs are escalating

:03:00. > :03:03.and it has gone from 10 million to 17,000,040 park and ride that won't

:03:04. > :03:07.do anything while at the same time they are cutting services left,

:03:08. > :03:17.right and centre so it is disgraceful and very disappointing.

:03:18. > :03:22.The campaigners were also keen to tell me that one of the early as

:03:23. > :03:27.this is designed to help will be the London Road and I was here this

:03:28. > :03:31.morning to see what people using it think of the plans. It is the school

:03:32. > :03:37.run that causes all the disruption and when there isn't, this road is

:03:38. > :03:41.absolutely fine. It is an area where people walk and enjoy the pleasure

:03:42. > :03:44.of it and they are going to sell it as a car park and they don't see

:03:45. > :03:50.where it will solve the problem. Who isn't going to stop not less. They

:03:51. > :03:59.have got a nice place they can have up at the old aerodrome. They have

:04:00. > :04:02.got the A46. It is part of my childhood and I used to play down

:04:03. > :04:09.there and also we are worried about getting flooded. The meeting goes on

:04:10. > :04:13.upstairs and the voters and expected for another hour or so but we will

:04:14. > :04:16.have result of that in the ten o'clock News and whatever they

:04:17. > :04:20.bought for today it is still not over. The application goes to

:04:21. > :04:25.planning and we know from history there might still be some hurdles to

:04:26. > :04:25.overcome. Thank you and we will have result later.

:04:26. > :04:28.The search has continued today for a 24-year-old man who went

:04:29. > :04:30.missing after a night out in Bristol.

:04:31. > :04:32.Deakon Wilkins from Worle was last seen on CCTV leaving Motion

:04:33. > :04:42.Police divers spent the morning searching the nearby Feeder canal.

:04:43. > :04:44.His family has also been handing out leaflets.

:04:45. > :04:46.A 75-year-old woman has suffered injuries including

:04:47. > :04:49.a fractured eye socket, after an attack in a Bristol park.

:04:50. > :04:50.It happened in broad daylight on Monday.

:04:51. > :04:53.Naomi Roberts is now recovering in the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

:04:54. > :05:07.It's one of Bristol's most popular parks 75-year-old Naomi Roberts

:05:08. > :05:15.of an attack that's left her with shocking injuries.

:05:16. > :05:20.Her face is bruised and swollen With fractures to her cheek bone

:05:21. > :05:28.and eye socket and to her collar bone too.

:05:29. > :05:37.I saw her wheel then on a trolley with her face looking absolutely

:05:38. > :05:42.horrendous. Her daughter Joanna says she is worried it could now take

:05:43. > :05:47.months to recover. Inevitably, it is going to have a really significant

:05:48. > :05:52.impact, not just on her but on other people as well, other older people

:05:53. > :05:56.who might use that park who will feel unsafe to go out so it has a

:05:57. > :06:02.huge knock-on impact. On quality-of-life. She only saw

:06:03. > :06:08.herself for the first time this morning. She was really shocked and

:06:09. > :06:12.upset at how she looked and also worried about, she is going to look

:06:13. > :06:15.like that for quite a long time. People will think I'm a monster when

:06:16. > :06:32.I am walking around! She was walking her dog in Eastville

:06:33. > :06:36.Park on Monday afternoon and it appears she was attacked from behind

:06:37. > :06:39.and her handbag pulled off her shoulder and she fell flat on her

:06:40. > :06:43.face. She doesn't remember what happened but she has told her

:06:44. > :06:46.daughter she thinks she remembers seeing a bike circling around before

:06:47. > :06:48.the attack and she saw somebody cycling away when she was on the

:06:49. > :06:49.ground. Police have called the assault

:06:50. > :06:54.on Naomi despicable and asked for the public's help

:06:55. > :06:56.to trace her attacker. They've appealed for anyone

:06:57. > :06:59.who was in Eastville Park on Monday lunchtime to get in touch with any

:07:00. > :07:14.information they might have. Frightening. You're watching BBC

:07:15. > :07:18.points West on the last Wednesday in January.

:07:19. > :07:20.And stay with us tonight as there's much more

:07:21. > :07:22.still to bring you - including.

:07:23. > :07:24.The swan shot with a crossbow in Cheltenham -

:07:25. > :07:29.And meet the mums and children whose allotment in Bristol is now helping

:07:30. > :07:39.raise money for refugee families abroad.

:07:40. > :07:42.First, an update on a story we brought you last night.

:07:43. > :07:44.Two Bristol University students are to make a formal complaint

:07:45. > :07:46.to the police after being racially abused on social media.

:07:47. > :07:49.Timi Areeyo and Tami SoTeer told Points West yesterday about how

:07:50. > :07:51.they'd been subjected to bullying and offensive comments

:07:52. > :07:55.Today they also agreed to talk to the university's pro vice

:07:56. > :07:57.chancellor who emailed them this afternoon to arrange a meeting.

:07:58. > :07:59.Lee Madan's report starts with a shocking reminder

:08:00. > :08:12.of what the two students have had to cope with.

:08:13. > :08:15.This shocking video about University of Bristol student Timi Ariyo

:08:16. > :08:18.was shared between hundreds of students around

:08:19. > :08:25.Timi, and his friend Tami Sotire, told Points West yesterday how

:08:26. > :08:32.it was sent to them as part of a campaign of racist abuse

:08:33. > :08:35.by a group of 15 young men - many of them they know

:08:36. > :08:39.They say the reaction from viewers has convinced them to now report

:08:40. > :08:45.From the public support I know these people are in the minority

:08:46. > :08:48.and should be brought to justice for the stuff they've

:08:49. > :08:58.I guess we'd like to see something done to these people even if it's

:08:59. > :09:00.just speaking to them letting them know they can't carry

:09:01. > :09:05.The young men who've been targeting Timi and Tami include a law

:09:06. > :09:07.student at Cambridge, a medical student at Plymouth

:09:08. > :09:11.The University of Bristol told Points West yesterday it couldn't

:09:12. > :09:13.investigate until Timi and Tami made an official complaint,

:09:14. > :09:15.but today it reached out to them, inviting them

:09:16. > :09:20.They've decided to accept and want all the universities

:09:21. > :09:23.involved to take action against their students.

:09:24. > :09:26.These are future lawyers, future doctors, future politicians,

:09:27. > :09:29.I wouldn't want to have my doctor spew racial slurs in his youth

:09:30. > :09:34.and have that mentality carry on into adulthood,

:09:35. > :09:37.you shouldn't want to put these people out in public it reflects

:09:38. > :09:39.badly on your establishment so surely should want to do

:09:40. > :09:42.something and stamp it out before they graduate.

:09:43. > :09:47.I think it's a shame it took it being on Points West

:09:48. > :09:53.to get it on TV for reaction it should be the university

:09:54. > :09:56.They say they'll approach the meetings with an open mind,

:09:57. > :10:00.and hope something can be done to change the attitude of the young

:10:01. > :10:10.A man from Wiltshire whose son died when he was hit by a car is calling

:10:11. > :10:12.on the government to increase sentences for death

:10:13. > :10:16.Major Richard Gilbey's son James was knocked over and left for dead

:10:17. > :10:18.by two men who were jailed for eight years.

:10:19. > :10:24.Today, he handed in a petition to Number Ten.

:10:25. > :10:27.In a moment, I'll be speaking to his local MP -

:10:28. > :10:28.but first here's our Home Affairs Correspondent,

:10:29. > :10:34.This is just another step in Major Richard Gilbey's fight

:10:35. > :10:42.At the door of 10 Downing Street - handing in a 16,000 strong petition

:10:43. > :10:49.asking the Prime Minister for her support.

:10:50. > :10:56.We are just handing that in in the hope it will help support the public

:10:57. > :11:01.consultation and raise awareness and take this forward another step to

:11:02. > :11:05.get justice for James and others and an increase in the maximum sentence

:11:06. > :11:06.and a change in the sentencing guidelines.

:11:07. > :11:11.It is a campaign he wishes he'd never had to be part of.

:11:12. > :11:14.But in July 2015 his 25-year-old son James was mown down and left

:11:15. > :11:19.The two men responsible had been racing through Leeds

:11:20. > :11:22.at speeds of up to 80mph - James didn't stand a chance.

:11:23. > :11:25.Malik and Mahmood were sentenced

:11:26. > :11:30.but are likely to be released after just four.

:11:31. > :11:32.Malik, the driver who hit James,

:11:33. > :11:40.had 35 previous convictions for motoring offences.

:11:41. > :11:47.We no longer live, we just exist. They gave James a death sentence and

:11:48. > :11:49.they gave me, my wife and my daughter a life sentence.

:11:50. > :11:54.give in these cases is 14 years - but the average time offenders spend

:11:55. > :11:57.That according to Major Gilbey and others is simply not enough.

:11:58. > :12:00.Under new plans being considered the government could extend

:12:01. > :12:02.the maximum sentence to life imprisonment - that's

:12:03. > :12:18.We know that nothing is enough for taking someone's life and sentences

:12:19. > :12:22.can't really reflect that. It's going to mean that judges who are

:12:23. > :12:25.deciding on these cases, trying to work out what sort of sentences

:12:26. > :12:32.should be imposed, I'm going to have more scope to add greater punishment

:12:33. > :12:33.to those who have been involved in the most serious cases.

:12:34. > :12:38.also support the introduction of a life sentence for those

:12:39. > :12:39.who kill whilst driving dangerously or whilst drunk.

:12:40. > :12:42.The couple died when their tandem was hit by a man driving

:12:43. > :12:46.The Ministry Of Justice today told me they 'are determined to make

:12:47. > :12:49.sure those who drive dangerously and kill face the full force

:12:50. > :12:53.Their consultation ends in one week and should report back

:12:54. > :13:01.Joining us now from Westminster is the Conservative MP

:13:02. > :13:08.for Devizes in Wiltshire, Claire Perry.

:13:09. > :13:14.Thanks for coming on the programme. How likely is it that the sentences

:13:15. > :13:19.available to the courts will be increased? I think it is very

:13:20. > :13:22.likely, we have heard all the way along since we started this campaign

:13:23. > :13:27.back in September just how many cases there are clearly sentencing

:13:28. > :13:32.guidelines currently don't seem to fit the crime. We know

:13:33. > :13:36.constituencies right across the country including the Prime

:13:37. > :13:43.Minister's have had the sorts of awful, dreadful tragic accidents,

:13:44. > :13:45.crimes, happening. I am very confident the consultation will

:13:46. > :13:50.result in changing the law for the worst sort of death by dangerous

:13:51. > :13:55.driving to be tried on the same tariff of manslaughter, which it

:13:56. > :13:59.effectively is. As your report pointed out very well, that is not

:14:00. > :14:02.enough because what we need to make sure that if we start from that

:14:03. > :14:08.level you don't then have sentences winnowed down. I wanted to ask you

:14:09. > :14:12.about that. The judges already have the power to sentence for 14 years,

:14:13. > :14:17.so longer sentences are available already but they are not being used.

:14:18. > :14:21.There is a series of reasons. One as they say we need to reserve most

:14:22. > :14:27.serious sentences for the most serious crimes. In the case of James

:14:28. > :14:30.who was mown down by two men who stopped only to retrieve their

:14:31. > :14:36.number plate, you have to ask yourself how bad is the case have to

:14:37. > :14:38.be? There are all sorts of automatic deductions under sentencing

:14:39. > :14:42.guidelines would really need to be reviewed so I think we will see a

:14:43. > :14:46.very strong signal from government that the maximum tariff needs to go

:14:47. > :14:51.up to life and what we want is clear guidelines on why those longer

:14:52. > :14:56.sentences can be applied. Just looking at James's terrible tragedy.

:14:57. > :15:01.The driver already had 35 previous driving offences on his licence. It

:15:02. > :15:06.doesn't make sense that someone with that sort of dreadful driving record

:15:07. > :15:10.can still be on the road? And the judge made it very clear that he

:15:11. > :15:15.wanted to be able to sentence for a longer. I as I understand that under

:15:16. > :15:18.the current rules are fewer not tested as positive for drink-driving

:15:19. > :15:23.at the scene, that counts in your favour but in this case the driver

:15:24. > :15:28.fled the scene, Bond has clothes and had the car so it was impossible to

:15:29. > :15:33.prove whether or not he was drunk or on drugs at the time, so there are

:15:34. > :15:38.totes that frustrate the legal system and mean these awful crimes

:15:39. > :15:39.are not being accompanied by the late sentence.

:15:40. > :15:41.A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson

:15:42. > :15:44.following a fire in a first floor flat in Trowbridge.

:15:45. > :15:46.Firefighters were called to Woolpack Meadows just

:15:47. > :15:53.One person was taken to hospital after breathing in smoke.

:15:54. > :15:56.A man's been given a two year Criminal Behaviour Order to stop him

:15:57. > :16:00.42-year-old Paul Charlton is also not allowed to give bird food

:16:01. > :16:04.The council prosecution follows complaints that his actions have led

:16:05. > :16:14.to a rise in the number of pigeons in the city centre.

:16:15. > :16:18.A fund to pay for treatment to a swan shot with a crossbow

:16:19. > :16:21.George the swan was found on Pitteville Lake yesterday

:16:22. > :16:24.with the bolt from the crossbow in his neck.

:16:25. > :16:26.He's still in a critical condition at the Vale Wildlife Hospital.

:16:27. > :16:42.Our Gloucestershire reporter, Steve Knibbs, has been to see him.

:16:43. > :16:49.Welcome to the Vale wildlife Centre. They have letters to see George and

:16:50. > :16:54.he appears his cage. You can see the patch over his left eye, he has lost

:16:55. > :17:00.that I. Currently stable but in a critical condition so not out of the

:17:01. > :17:03.woods, and public support financially his treatment is well

:17:04. > :17:07.over ?3500 and the reward offered for information leading to the

:17:08. > :17:14.conviction of the person responsible stands at ?3000 to the public

:17:15. > :17:19.support is incredible. We can speak to the assistant manager, tell us

:17:20. > :17:23.more about George's injuries. The bolt went in through his left eye

:17:24. > :17:29.and it has actually exited on the bottom right hand side of his lower

:17:30. > :17:34.jaw. When he came in, the ball was still in situ and when we removed it

:17:35. > :17:38.it haemorrhaged really badly. We at one point thought we would lose him

:17:39. > :17:45.on the table due to bleeding but since then we have managed to stop

:17:46. > :17:46.the bleeding and he has been on IV fluids, antibiotics and

:17:47. > :17:52.anti-inflammatories and pain relief and he will get for the treatment

:17:53. > :17:59.once he has stabilised. I understand it was only millimetres from his

:18:00. > :18:04.brain. Where does this rank? This is the worst we have witnessed because

:18:05. > :18:08.it was definitely an intentional injury. It is absolutely horrendous

:18:09. > :18:14.when you consider to such a beautiful bird, but reaffirming your

:18:15. > :18:19.face then human nature, that public support. It really has. We will of

:18:20. > :18:24.course keep you updated about George's progress. Just horrible.

:18:25. > :18:27.A BMX rider from Bristol is now the holder of a world record

:18:28. > :18:29.for the most 'death spins' in a minute.

:18:30. > :18:31.The move involves balancing with just the rear wheel

:18:32. > :18:33.of the bike on the floor and spinning 360 degrees.

:18:34. > :18:36.Matti Hemmings - who is 29 and lives in Portishead -

:18:37. > :18:40.His attempt has now been ratified by the Guiness Book of World records

:18:41. > :19:01.It means nobody has to climb on a bike. Congratulations. First of all

:19:02. > :19:09.this is your second time breaking the world record? I did it before a

:19:10. > :19:13.live on blue Peter, no pressure! After I did that somebody else beat

:19:14. > :19:19.it and got the record. Somebody you know? Yes, I like challenges,

:19:20. > :19:23.sliders again and managed to achieve 46 so it is great. Major pressure so

:19:24. > :19:28.we will have a look at that now just to see what you do. We will speed up

:19:29. > :19:34.work because obviously it takes a bit of time for you to do that. We

:19:35. > :19:42.are almost there, and then we see you get of the bite. What did you

:19:43. > :19:51.need to be? 44. You sounded pretty happy! And quite busy! Busy, there

:19:52. > :19:54.was a lot of pressure on my leg so I had to swing my body and to keep the

:19:55. > :20:00.rotation is going so a lot of bombing in the legs. When did you

:20:01. > :20:06.start doing this? I started when I was about 11 so been riding for a

:20:07. > :20:10.number of years and saw it at a BMX event, saw a guy spinning around and

:20:11. > :20:16.started asking loads of questions. They gave me loads of advice, where

:20:17. > :20:20.to go, and started going from there. You can offer you advice to other

:20:21. > :20:28.people because you have done us a little guide. On how to do a death

:20:29. > :20:38.spin so offend with one stenosis, stamped by and press record. -- if

:20:39. > :20:45.any body wants to know. Grab the peg, over the top. Using my legs to

:20:46. > :20:48.pump. And when the smoke, grabbed the peg and the handlebars and

:20:49. > :21:00.finish off on the pedals. You are not even in the saddle. And

:21:01. > :21:08.with that he was gone. That is amazing. I know BMX folk will know

:21:09. > :21:12.this but it is very small. How do you get that sort of

:21:13. > :21:18.manoeuvrability? A lot of practice involved in the lot of momentum.

:21:19. > :21:22.Being able to ride on one wheel as well, so a lot of practice goes into

:21:23. > :21:26.that, and then after that you develop the tricks. You start from

:21:27. > :21:33.the basics and work your way up. But this is your life? I am lucky to be

:21:34. > :21:36.will to write. I do it full time so I do lots of events and shows and I

:22:40. > :22:45.has now become an all leases in this urban part of Bristol. At home we

:22:46. > :22:51.only have a little decked area. I don't think you'd actually seen a

:23:10. > :23:15.really like it. I googled blueberries for me to eat. Besides

:23:16. > :23:21.growing fruit and vegetables for themselves, the group decided to

:23:22. > :23:25.help other families in greater need. We made ?600 on the jams stall which

:23:26. > :23:30.really surprised us, we didn't expect to make that much, and we

:23:57. > :23:59.Looks very tasty as well! And what a gorgeous day. Speaking of which, Ian

:24:00. > :24:11.is on the roof. Tomorrow will be colder? Tomorrow

:24:12. > :24:15.will be bitterly cold compared to conditions of late because the winds

:24:16. > :24:21.have been very light but that won't be the case tomorrow and already the

:24:22. > :24:25.breezes packing up, and it will be accompanied by a lot of close around

:24:26. > :24:29.through the course of the day but by late afternoon, some brighter

:24:30. > :24:34.weather starts to emerge from the south. The reason for the change of

:24:35. > :24:38.conditions is a pool of very cold air across the continent now being

:24:39. > :24:42.dragged across the English Channel. Associated with that tonight, the

:24:43. > :24:48.cloud is thickening up and we could see a disturbance higher the

:24:53. > :24:56.sprinklings of light snow, maybe some the result which will tend to

:24:57. > :25:00.freeze on contact with objects and as we head to lose tomorrow, as you

:25:01. > :25:04.can see from the south, we start to lose the cloud cover but it'll be a

:25:05. > :25:08.process reserved for later in the day. We are thickening up the cloud

:25:09. > :25:12.from the south-east with the breeze picking up at the same time and into

:25:13. > :25:16.the second half of the night you will see just a sprinkling of some

:25:17. > :25:20.of this very light snow, not expected to settle, just something

:25:21. > :25:28.you may spot if out and about, and the temperature for all of us

:25:29. > :25:34.dropping to freezing or below around minus 1- minus three. A cold start

:25:35. > :25:37.and already a brisk breeze with the wind chill becoming very much a

:25:38. > :25:41.factor through the course of tomorrow associated with that will

:25:42. > :25:45.be this area of cloud and through the South you can see how it starts

:25:46. > :25:49.to brighten up and it will be too late to make any difference to the

:25:50. > :25:55.temperature because the ambient air temperature probably only 2-4. If we

:25:56. > :26:01.then add on the effect of the wind, this by midday is the sort of feel
