:00:00. > :00:07.Welcome to BBC Points West with Liz Beacon and David Garmston.

:00:08. > :00:10.Our main story tonight: How green is this valley?

:00:11. > :00:11.Plans for an environmentally friendly business

:00:12. > :00:21.park near Stroud which could create 4,000 jobs.

:00:22. > :00:31.The most sustainable stadium in the world and even a canal. Is this

:00:32. > :00:33.could turn out to be the biggest project in the area since the 1950s.

:00:34. > :00:35.But some locals complain the increased traffic make

:00:36. > :00:50.If you snooze you lose - A call for voters to wake up

:00:51. > :00:52.and smell the election fever as the campaign for a metro

:00:53. > :00:56.The teenager battling cancer who raises money for others -

:00:57. > :01:02.And saluting the town that spoke for a nation -

:01:03. > :01:11.we're in Wootton Bassett ten years on from the first repatriations.

:01:12. > :01:15.Details of a huge green technology development right next

:01:16. > :01:19.to M5 in Gloucestershire were unveiled today.

:01:20. > :01:21.The plans involve offices and industrial units

:01:22. > :01:25.as well as a brand new football stadium and a nature reserve.

:01:26. > :01:27.It's all the dream of Dale Vince, founder

:01:28. > :01:28.of the green energy company, Ecotricity.

:01:29. > :01:31.But for some people living nearby, his proposals are an unnecessary

:01:32. > :01:41.Here's our Gloucestershire reporter, Steve Knibbs.

:01:42. > :01:44.These are ambitious plans - A green science technology

:01:45. > :01:47.business park on one side - which ecotricity claims

:01:48. > :01:50.will attract up to 4,000 jobs, and on the other side a high tech

:01:51. > :01:53.sporting facility with a new 10000 seat Forest Green Rovers

:01:54. > :02:02.And everything pushing the boundaries of sustainability.

:02:03. > :02:11.That is what we like to do. Somebody has to question, would we adhere to

:02:12. > :02:16.green standards and the answer is we want to do better than that, so our

:02:17. > :02:17.buildings will be the most sustainable buildings that have been

:02:18. > :02:18.built yet. Today, companies

:02:19. > :02:19.interested in building and being part of the ecopark

:02:20. > :02:21.quizzed Dale Vince A vision of tapping

:02:22. > :02:34.into and promoting the green When you put like-minded businesses

:02:35. > :02:39.like this together, they starts barking ideas and opportunities to

:02:40. > :02:44.work with each other and spin of new businesses, and that helps grow the

:02:45. > :02:48.sustainable economy and also local services and the economy to support

:02:49. > :02:49.them. Then they build up opportunities to move abroad.

:02:50. > :02:52.But with a project this size come concerns -

:02:53. > :02:55.many locals in Eastington say junction 13 - the gateway to Stroud

:02:56. > :02:59.Ecotricity say they'll fix this with a new dual carriageway

:03:00. > :03:01.But also the ecopark isn't part of Stroud's recently

:03:02. > :03:04.published local plan - and those opposing the park say

:03:05. > :03:11.there's just no clearly identified need for it.

:03:12. > :03:21.We have very high employment and the local area, so the risk of a

:03:22. > :03:26.shortage means there is no requirement for extra jobs, and we

:03:27. > :03:31.need development space for all businesses in the near future. It is

:03:32. > :03:36.the biggest and most complex planning decision made here since

:03:37. > :03:41.Berkeley power station in the 1950s. It is still early days and hasn't

:03:42. > :03:46.even gone through planning yet. If it does go through planning it will

:03:47. > :03:50.be at least three years before the first ball is kicked in anger at

:03:51. > :03:51.what is hoped to be the most sustainable football stadium in the

:03:52. > :03:52.world. A driver remains in hospital

:03:53. > :03:54.after a serious crash Two lorries collided just

:03:55. > :03:57.after fouro'clock this morning. A second driver was released

:03:58. > :03:59.from hospital this afternoon. The road was shut for

:04:00. > :04:01.most of the day whilst In Bristol one person has been left

:04:02. > :04:08.with serious injuries after a collision between a car

:04:09. > :04:10.and a bus. It happened in the early hours

:04:11. > :04:13.of this morning on Wells road. There were long delays to traffic

:04:14. > :04:20.but the road has since re-opened. Workers at Mini in Swindon

:04:21. > :04:23.are taking part in a series of eight 24 hour walk outs,

:04:24. > :04:25.in a dispute over pensions. The Unite Union is protesting

:04:26. > :04:27.over Mini's owners, BMW's plans to ditch the company's

:04:28. > :04:30.final salary pension scheme. It claims some workers could lose up

:04:31. > :04:33.to ?160,000 in retirement income. BMW says it has to act now to secure

:04:34. > :04:36.the long term viability A publicity drive is underway

:04:37. > :04:51.to tell 900,000 people in the West that they're

:04:52. > :04:54.about to get a new leader. Today it was confirmed that six

:04:55. > :04:57.candidates will be on the ballot paper for the so-called metro mayor,

:04:58. > :04:59.covering Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath

:05:00. > :05:00.and North East Somerset. But getting voters

:05:01. > :05:02.interested, let alone Here's our political

:05:03. > :05:12.editor, Paul Barltrop. The government is pumping money

:05:13. > :05:14.into publicising the contest, from billboards on the streets,

:05:15. > :05:17.to adverts on social media - though that's sparked plenty

:05:18. > :05:18.of critical comments. The latest is a video

:05:19. > :05:21.with something of a local flavour: people who'll come under

:05:22. > :05:39.the new mayor? Farmers market. Supermarket. Rugby.

:05:40. > :05:43.We may not always see eye to eye but we care about where we live and we

:05:44. > :05:51.need to make a living and get around. These things excite us all

:05:52. > :05:53.which is why we are acting on the issues that we all care about.

:05:54. > :05:57.people who'll come under the new mayor?

:05:58. > :05:59.Especially when even the name has proved difficult.

:06:00. > :06:01.The government don't use the term 'metromayor'.

:06:02. > :06:04.They prefer to talk about a 'mayor', but different to the elected mayor

:06:05. > :06:07.The new person will take charge of the snappily-titled West

:06:08. > :06:10.That's been abbreviated to WECA, and it's already been

:06:11. > :06:12.holding meetings involving the leaders from the three

:06:13. > :06:26.But, yet again, the name's proving a thorny issue!

:06:27. > :06:35.I do not like the word, WECA. It is the West of England combined

:06:36. > :06:38.authority. I wanted to be called the west of England combined authority

:06:39. > :06:40.and we will have a West of England combined authority Mayor.

:06:41. > :06:43.And there's plenty of that on their own video,

:06:44. > :06:46.put out to encourage people to vote on May the 4th.

:06:47. > :06:48.Well, the Bristol Post is determined that its readers

:06:49. > :06:52.This was its front page today - with a very stark warning

:06:53. > :06:54.that the west is "sleepwalking" into this election.

:06:55. > :06:56.And I'm pleased to say that Mike Norton, Editor

:06:57. > :07:03.Mike - You've been quite tough on your readers today -

:07:04. > :07:17.Why do you think enthusiasm appears to be so low? I am concerned we are

:07:18. > :07:21.sleepwalking into the election and not enough people realise the person

:07:22. > :07:28.who wins this election will have a lot of power and the deciding vote

:07:29. > :07:33.on the spending of ?1 billion of funding, devolved to the greater

:07:34. > :07:39.authority. What do you think of the field of candidates? I think it is

:07:40. > :07:45.quite underwhelming and how we look from the outside worries me because

:07:46. > :07:51.this election has not been able to attract really high-profile

:07:52. > :07:55.candidates that we should be having. In Manchester, Andy Burnham is the

:07:56. > :08:00.well-known candidate for the is nobody like that. And that person

:08:01. > :08:04.needs to have a presence, particularly in London, so whoever

:08:05. > :08:09.wins has to be able to bang on doors in London and they worry nobody here

:08:10. > :08:13.is able to do that. I have been doing interviews on the streets and

:08:14. > :08:19.a lot of people are getting confused with the Metro Bus. It is similar

:08:20. > :08:23.and that we are building a network that doesn't have provide that and

:08:24. > :08:28.we are creating a council that doesn't have a base yet. You are

:08:29. > :08:34.calling it, wake up for the Greater Bristol. You want to call it the

:08:35. > :08:37.Mayor of Greater Bristol. Do you think that name will make any

:08:38. > :08:46.difference to the perception of this post? Once again it is how we are

:08:47. > :08:50.perceived outside the region. Outside, what people know is Bristol

:08:51. > :08:58.and Bath so it should be either Greater Bristol or the Bristol and

:08:59. > :09:02.Bath region. We have other Mayors as well. It is confusing and I

:09:03. > :09:08.understand why people are confused but they need to wake up and hold

:09:09. > :09:12.whoever gets this job to account. And you're going to do your best to

:09:13. > :09:16.make sure people do wake up. I will try. Thank you for coming in.

:09:17. > :09:18.And in our late bulletin in the 10 o'clock news tonight,

:09:19. > :09:21.we'll be hearing from someone who's been pushing the government

:09:22. > :09:26.to introduce this role for the past decade.

:09:27. > :09:33.It might have been mis-sold up until now but a lot of people will see

:09:34. > :09:40.over the next year what the Mayor can do for them. It will be the most

:09:41. > :09:41.directly involved leader they have ever elected and it will be a real

:09:42. > :09:44.benefit. Join us for that. And we'd like you to get involved

:09:45. > :09:48.too and join us as we debate all issues surrounding

:09:49. > :09:49.the new mayor. You've made a little film

:09:50. > :10:03.all about it, haven't you? Bristol already has a Lord May and

:10:04. > :10:15.unelected WECA putt Mayor and now a third is on the way. Voters here go

:10:16. > :10:20.to the polls for the new role. It is called the Metro Mayor. They will

:10:21. > :10:24.have powers over housing and transport and ?30 million a year to

:10:25. > :10:28.spend on infrastructure. If you would like to attend the debate or

:10:29. > :10:35.put a question to the candidate, let us know.

:10:36. > :10:44.Coming soon. That will be transmitted later this month and all

:10:45. > :10:44.the candidates will be there and will be taking questions.

:10:45. > :10:47.Well, it's Liz and David with you this evening,

:10:48. > :10:50.Still to come on tonight's Points West.

:10:51. > :10:53.Nick Knowles joins us live from the latest DIYSOS project

:10:54. > :11:03.And we'll have joy, we'll have fun, we'll have a season in the sun.

:11:04. > :11:15.We look ahead to the summer with Gloucestershire's cricketers.

:11:16. > :11:17.A charity has called a 13-year-old girl from Bristol

:11:18. > :11:21."an inspiration", for thinking of others whilst battling cancer.

:11:22. > :11:23.Tatiana Stankovic Davis is being treated for leukemia

:11:24. > :11:26.but what she's been doing to pass the long hours is already

:11:27. > :11:33.Andy Howard has been to visit her at Bristol Children's Hospital.

:11:34. > :11:40.For the second time in her short life, Tatiana has cancer.

:11:41. > :11:45.And you just feel like you can't cope sometimes.

:11:46. > :11:55.There's lots of decisions being made...

:11:56. > :11:58.It is just annoying because you want it to be back to normal life

:11:59. > :12:05.She's been in this hospital room for more than a month.

:12:06. > :12:07.But when she feels well enough, she escapes,

:12:08. > :12:16.This is the model I got for finishing chemo this year,

:12:17. > :12:25.I mean, there are days when Mum and Dad are sad.

:12:26. > :12:31.You know, why is this happening to your own precious child.

:12:32. > :12:37.But then you see a smiling face, you actually know that life goes on.

:12:38. > :12:42.And you actually enjoy that day as a family.

:12:43. > :12:46.It's got a dentist and a photography studio.

:12:47. > :12:50.Despite being at her lowest point, in the past few weeks Tatiana has

:12:51. > :12:56.She's decided to raise money for other children,

:12:57. > :12:58.so they have something to play with whilst they're

:12:59. > :13:04.In return, her dad Simon will shave off his beard.

:13:05. > :13:11.So far, Tatiana has raised more than ?8,000.

:13:12. > :13:24.All for a charity which supplies Lego to hospitals.

:13:25. > :13:31.I'm quite precious about it as you can imagine but as soon as Simon

:13:32. > :13:35.suggested it, I thought let's see how it goes and the amount of money

:13:36. > :13:43.is just phenomenal. It is probably about 10% of turnover. She has had

:13:44. > :13:47.numerous operations and hundreds of scans and she has been prodded and

:13:48. > :13:54.pooled, quite often when all she has wanted to do is actually sleep. So

:13:55. > :13:56.to actually deal with that and then to be thinking of others is

:13:57. > :13:59.outstanding. I just feel it was nice to be

:14:00. > :14:26.helping others and making What a difficult road she is on and

:14:27. > :14:27.we send you our very best wishes for a fast recovery.

:14:28. > :14:30.As he just mentioned, part of Tatiana's fundraising

:14:31. > :14:34.So here they are, father and daughter, before this -

:14:35. > :14:37.the moment Simon had his beard completely shaved off to help boost

:14:38. > :14:48.And this is how the proud dad looks today.

:14:49. > :14:51.Wootton Bassett was for many years synonymous with the compassion shown

:14:52. > :14:56.The town even had 'royal' added to its name in recognition

:14:57. > :14:59.of the way in which it responded to the repatriations that came

:15:00. > :15:03.It's now ten years since RAF Lyneham was chosen as the regular

:15:04. > :15:16.A moment of silence, remembrance, respect.

:15:17. > :15:26.Captured by many cameras and broadcast around the world.

:15:27. > :15:29.That silence and the first hearses coming up, that never leaves

:15:30. > :15:35.you and you finish shooting with a sense of numbness at what's

:15:36. > :15:39.The town carried out 167 services - but they started spontaneously.

:15:40. > :15:41.The coffins began passing through regularly in 2007 -

:15:42. > :15:44.after nearby RAF Lyneham became the airbase the fallen

:15:45. > :15:49.from Afghanistan and Iraq were flown into.

:15:50. > :15:58.During those repatriations, hundreds if not thousands of people would be

:15:59. > :16:01.Today it's very much business as usual.

:16:02. > :16:03.The Town Council's decided not to put on any specific events

:16:04. > :16:22.And what makes me proud is that our little town here managed

:16:23. > :16:24.to put respect back into our armed forces and respect

:16:25. > :16:30.Lee Mackie from Oxfordshire lost her son Jason when he was

:16:31. > :16:34.killed in an explosion in Afghanistan in 2009.

:16:35. > :16:37.Although she was too upset to go to his repatriation -

:16:38. > :16:43.I became very aware that the community

:16:44. > :16:50.there was like a comfort blanket to these traumatisued families.

:16:51. > :16:52.They gave them the opportunity to recognise the fact

:16:53. > :17:04.that our nation appreciate the sacrifice they had made.

:17:05. > :17:06.Repatriations stopped in Royal Wootton Basset in 2011 -

:17:07. > :17:08.they now take place at RAF Brize Norton.

:17:09. > :17:10.In those four years, 345 fallen service men

:17:11. > :17:30.by people in the town - and they haven't been forgotten.

:17:31. > :17:34.The town made the country proud. It was recognised that around the

:17:35. > :17:35.world. Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson

:17:36. > :17:38.says he's still confident his side can avoid relegation

:17:39. > :17:40.despite suffering their heaviest City were 1-0 down at half-time

:17:41. > :17:43.before conceding four second half goals in just 21 minutes

:17:44. > :17:46.to lose 5-0 at Preston. Fans who had gathered at Ashton Gate

:17:47. > :18:06.to watch the match were left They need somebody like Harry

:18:07. > :18:12.Redknapp to come in, somebody like that just to get us over the line

:18:13. > :18:17.because it is a joke. He needs to go now, tonight. This job is too big

:18:18. > :18:22.for you. He will be there next season, one T? Unfortunately he will

:18:23. > :18:27.still be there even though most supporters want him to go. There

:18:28. > :18:31.will be a big backlash over the renewal of season tickets and

:18:32. > :18:32.everything else that goes on from now on, if everything goes wrong

:18:33. > :18:33.this season. Bristol City, who are just one place

:18:34. > :18:35.above the relegation zone, Sorry if that was painful viewing

:18:36. > :18:43.for some of our audience. Hundreds of builders have

:18:44. > :18:45.spent the past nine days volunteering their services

:18:46. > :18:48.at a house in Hartcliffe in Bristol It's so that 24-year-old

:18:49. > :18:51.Ryan Pollard can return home, having lived in a care home

:18:52. > :18:54.in Gloucester for He collapsed after an operation

:18:55. > :18:57.for a brain condition, Well, the presenter of DIY SOS has

:18:58. > :19:05.been on site for most of the time and joins us from there tonight. The

:19:06. > :19:22.big reveal's tomorrow, We are going to be ready. We taught

:19:23. > :19:26.actually we would finish earlier than we have ever finished before

:19:27. > :19:30.but it stretched into the night and we will be here until about 11pm and

:19:31. > :19:42.then we will be finished and able to show you. What are the spirits like?

:19:43. > :19:47.Very good and if you look... A lot of people stood outside. That is how

:19:48. > :19:52.good it is. You get to a certain point when you have to clear people

:19:53. > :19:56.outside you can get the thing finished, so all of these people

:19:57. > :20:00.have their jobs and should be going home, but we can't actually get rid

:20:01. > :20:09.of them all. I wish I could get rid of this lot. Your programme is based

:20:10. > :20:13.on the same site as ours and we have seen the vans coming and going, you

:20:14. > :20:18.have put in some incredible hours this week? It has probably averaged

:20:19. > :20:24.about 100 hours a day and if they are putting in 10-12 hours a day you

:20:25. > :20:28.can do the maths. A huge amount of work goes into this and we are

:20:29. > :20:38.taking on all the work in nine days so what is an unbelievable job. The

:20:39. > :20:43.trades have come out from all over Bristol and surrounding, up from

:20:44. > :20:46.Somerset and all over this area has been massively supportive and

:20:47. > :20:50.welcoming and people bringing cakes and drinks and everything to make us

:20:51. > :20:55.feel welcome. Everybody saying hello. It has been a fantastic job

:20:56. > :20:59.and everybody have really enjoyed it and tomorrow we get our reward and

:21:00. > :21:03.all these people who have given up their time to come and work for no

:21:04. > :21:10.wages will get their reward when they finally get to see mum and dad.

:21:11. > :21:16.Mum and dad get to bring him home after five years. That will be a

:21:17. > :21:19.wonderful moment. We love the bit where they see it for the first time

:21:20. > :21:22.but do they have any clue what sort of things you have done and have you

:21:23. > :21:27.asked questions about what they would like? Our designer always

:21:28. > :21:32.spends time with the family to get an idea of the things they like and

:21:33. > :21:43.people occasionally ask if anybody doesn't like it. This is not like

:21:44. > :21:45.Changing Grooms, this is people needing the waterways widened so

:21:46. > :21:51.their son can move around the house, so he can be at home, and specialist

:21:52. > :21:55.facilities they need. If we widen the doors and put a bathroom and

:21:56. > :21:59.downstairs they would be happy but the fact we go the extra mile and

:22:00. > :22:07.build the space they need and they get some high-end luxury added, it

:22:08. > :22:10.is almost neither here nor there but it can shock them. We take all the

:22:11. > :22:15.internal walls out and half the floor is out and there is a point

:22:16. > :22:20.you can see through the roof, we took the back of the house off,

:22:21. > :22:23.everything goes out, so the house they are stepping back into will not

:22:24. > :22:29.be the house they live them for 26 years but it will be the house built

:22:30. > :22:32.specifically for his needs and will mean for the first time in five

:22:33. > :22:37.years they can be a family together. We can't wait to see it. Am I being

:22:38. > :22:44.undermined by what is going on behind me? Thanks for thing you have

:22:45. > :22:46.done, look forward to seeing it. I will sort them out, goodbye. What

:22:47. > :22:48.are you doing? The start of the county cricket

:22:49. > :22:50.season is just two days away, and this morning Gloucestershire's

:22:51. > :22:53.players pulled on their whites The squad has a much

:22:54. > :23:12.younger look to it, It's not easy to follow in the

:23:13. > :23:15.footsteps of one of Gloucestershire's most successful

:23:16. > :23:21.overseas signings but that is the task for the 23-year-old Israeli and

:23:22. > :23:26.Cameron Bancroft. Michael Kleiner scored over 6000 runs in the four

:23:27. > :23:32.seasons and led them to a trophy. He will be back for one-day cricket but

:23:33. > :23:36.Bancroft takes over in the championship. When you enjoy your

:23:37. > :23:41.cricket you will be successful and play well so these guys have that

:23:42. > :23:45.great feel and I am looking forward to running with that, nice and

:23:46. > :23:52.relaxed and enjoying my cricket and hopefully that results in some good

:23:53. > :23:57.runs. Gloucestershire's best chance for success may be the T20. They

:23:58. > :24:01.were second from bottom in their group in the one-day cup but are

:24:02. > :24:07.hopeful of improving that, and the format they championship results.

:24:08. > :24:12.Two teams can get promoted and as I said that wasn't our aim that would

:24:13. > :24:15.be ridiculous, so some tough teams and we have to play some hard

:24:16. > :24:20.cricket and be sure that everybody is mocking in together to perform on

:24:21. > :24:29.the pitch. It will be tough but we are not hiding behind that. Comedian

:24:30. > :24:33.Dara O Brion has been lending they can take a hand promoting the

:24:34. > :24:41.England- Ireland match staged in Bristol next month. It is also a

:24:42. > :24:44.venue for the women's World Cup meaning Gloucestershire will host a

:24:45. > :24:50.lucrative ten internationals this summer. It is the difference between

:24:51. > :24:57.trading profit and not trading at profit. We are not hugely dependent

:24:58. > :25:02.on it but it makes the difference between a rainy day and a not so

:25:03. > :25:07.rainy day. The club has certainly sharpened up its image and as the

:25:08. > :25:08.county continues to prosper off the field, the team needs to ensure it

:25:09. > :25:25.is not left behind. Let's catch up on the weather and we

:25:26. > :25:29.can head upstairs. Let's take you through the forecast for tomorrow.

:25:30. > :25:33.We continue this run of dry weather and it is looking like over the next

:25:34. > :25:37.ten days, generally drier than average conditions will be

:25:38. > :25:44.prevailing, not to rule out some rain but not much. Tomorrow, on face

:25:45. > :25:50.value more cloud compared to today but one thing I should point out,

:25:51. > :25:55.the forecast computer models are struggling with the degree to which

:25:56. > :25:59.things cloud over and the balance between sunshine and cloud cover,

:26:00. > :26:08.not just for our region, and that continues into tomorrow, so you may

:26:09. > :26:17.see different solutions for any particular spot. A dry a for some

:26:18. > :26:20.and some will see a sunny weather. As we continue into tomorrow you

:26:21. > :26:25.will see the signal for mode of the cloud to be around about some

:26:26. > :26:30.exceptions, most notably to the west and around the coastal fringes. As

:26:31. > :26:37.we come inland, more breaks developing. A good deal of sunshine

:26:38. > :26:41.around, invaded by varying amounts of cloud. The process continues

:26:42. > :26:45.through the course of tonight but a dry night and not as chilly as the

:26:46. > :26:51.last so we should end up with the temperature around 6-8. For many of

:26:52. > :26:58.you a good deal of cloud around but with the caveat about the amount of

:26:59. > :27:03.cloud being difficult to pin down. A signal that some of the coastal

:27:04. > :27:08.fringes around Somerset will see a reasonable amount of sunshine.

:27:09. > :27:13.Coming inland, the cloud will be breaking up through the course of

:27:14. > :27:19.the afternoon but cloud or not, a Friday and the winds will be light,

:27:20. > :27:25.the temperature in the low teens. Feeling pleasantly warm should the

:27:26. > :27:28.sun breaks through. A more path into Friday, the trend throughout Friday

:27:29. > :27:33.and into the course of the weekend is to lose cloud cover rather than

:27:34. > :27:36.increase, boding well for the weekend, not impossible that by

:27:37. > :27:41.Sunday the temperature could get up to 20.

:27:42. > :27:47.Just in time for the weekend. That would be nice. Back again at 10pm,

:27:48. > :27:57.goodbye. CHILD: This is

:27:58. > :28:05.a major scientific breakthrough. Hello. It's All Round to

:28:06. > :28:20.Mrs Brown's, where my guests will be Steve Backshall, and music

:28:21. > :28:28.from the beautiful Pixie Lott.
