:00:22. > :00:23.terrible emotional abuse, for 12 years.

:00:24. > :00:25.The legislation about coercive control came into force exactly

:00:26. > :00:28.a year ago today and, because of it, Mandy's ex-partner is now in prison.

:00:29. > :00:40.She has been speaking exclusively to our reporter, Laura Jones.

:00:41. > :00:41.Looking forward to a brighter New Year

:00:42. > :00:47.For Mandy and her four children, it is a fresh start,

:00:48. > :00:51.away from her abusive and violent ex-partner.

:00:52. > :00:55.So, Zac was about four and Lee smashed the door on Zac,

:00:56. > :01:03.because he was so angry. He hurt Zac.

:01:04. > :01:08.He would sometimes pick up Leon and throw him

:01:09. > :01:10.at the top of the stairs. He is very scary.

:01:11. > :01:14.He would not even have to touch you for you to be terrified.

:01:15. > :01:17.His language and his body language. He is just so big.

:01:18. > :01:19.Although Mandy's former partner was a very angry man,

:01:20. > :01:21.he was also extremely emotionally abusive, controlling

:01:22. > :01:23.every detail of Mandy and the children's lives.

:01:24. > :01:25.It took years, and many attempts, before she finally

:01:26. > :01:37.The thing with the control thing is that

:01:38. > :01:40.they get in your head and convince you that you would never be able

:01:41. > :01:43.to have another partner. I am actually struggling.

:01:44. > :01:49.I struggle with relationships. He said that I could

:01:50. > :01:53.never cope and look after the children by myself.

:01:54. > :01:56.I would never have any money and all that sort of stuff.

:01:57. > :01:58.I never had a car. He used to take the car.

:01:59. > :02:02.I couldn't have a car, because he put it in his name.

:02:03. > :02:06.Christmas and New Year can be a difficult, and often dangerous,

:02:07. > :02:09.time of year for those living with domestic abuse.

:02:10. > :02:12.But this year, for the first time, something has changed.

:02:13. > :02:14.It means the sort of behaviour Mandy is describing

:02:15. > :02:22.That new law is called the Coercive Control Act

:02:23. > :02:25.and it is because of it that Mandy's ex, Lee Coleman,

:02:26. > :02:28.is now serving three years in prison for his bullying and

:02:29. > :02:32.It is a good result for Gloucestershire Police,

:02:33. > :02:35.but investigating this sort of activity is tough.

:02:36. > :02:38.It is a very different matter for the police

:02:39. > :02:40.to understand and get their heads round, really.

:02:41. > :02:43.We turn up to deal with someone who has been assaulted

:02:44. > :02:49.If there is an injury, we can record it and ask who did it.

:02:50. > :02:52.It is relatively straightforward and we can deal with that acute

:02:53. > :02:56.But it is much more challenging when someone says they are living

:02:57. > :02:59.I'm being controlled, he gives me no money, controls

:03:00. > :03:01.who I see and is watching me on the comnputer.

:03:02. > :03:04.That involves a whole new array of investigating techniques.

:03:05. > :03:06.It is much more challenging and much more time-consuming.

:03:07. > :03:11.It is quality time we need to invest in.

:03:12. > :03:14.It has been a tremendously difficult year for Mandy, but she is

:03:15. > :03:17.determined to put the past behind her and to focus on the future.

:03:18. > :03:20.By speaking out, she is hoping to help others in similar situations

:03:21. > :03:31.A man charged with the murder of his baby daughter in Bristol

:03:32. > :03:34.on Christmas Day has made his first appearance in court.

:03:35. > :03:41.Britton Gardens, in Kingswood, where six-month-old Aya Parker died

:03:42. > :03:49.on Christmas morning. Police and paramedics were called

:03:50. > :03:51.here in the early hours, but could not revive her.

:03:52. > :03:56.Aya's death was treated as unexplained, at first,

:03:57. > :03:59.until the results of a postmortem examination.

:04:00. > :04:03.Her father, 33-year-old Lee Parker, was arrested.

:04:04. > :04:09.Yesterday, he was charged and, today, he was in court.

:04:10. > :04:12.Lee Parker's appearance here at Bristol Magistrates' Court

:04:13. > :04:18.He confirmed his date of birth and his address.

:04:19. > :04:21.He was told that he had been charged with the murder

:04:22. > :04:23.of his baby daughter and that his case would be taken

:04:24. > :04:29.Because of the Christmas break there, in practice,

:04:30. > :04:31.that means he will be back here tomorrow morning,

:04:43. > :04:44.has died in prison. Kevin Crehan, who was

:04:45. > :04:45.35 and from Knowle, was given a 12-month

:04:46. > :04:49.It followed an incident in which rashers of bacon

:04:50. > :04:53.were placed on mosque door handles in Totterdown.

:04:54. > :04:55.We understand there were no suspicious circumstances

:04:56. > :05:03.An appeal to build a new base for Weston-Super-Mare's

:05:04. > :05:05.lifeboat station has raised more than ?500,000.

:05:06. > :05:07.The organisation has being trying to find a permanent home

:05:08. > :05:11.12 possible sites have been rejected, but the RNLI says it hopes

:05:12. > :05:17.to make an announcement in the New Year.
