:00:18. > :00:25.Bristol tries to cut down on sugar as doctors warn the risks
:00:26. > :00:37.We have got to now really wake up and smiled the copy because if we
:00:38. > :00:42.don't, I honestly think the NHS as we know it today will be bankrupt.
:00:43. > :00:44.And the risk of frost will be much more patchy in nature tonight. The
:00:45. > :00:47.details at the end of the programme. People in Cheddar have raised
:00:48. > :00:51.their concerns about a new craze This is what it looks like -

:01:24. > :01:29.much to the annoyance of locals. The parish council absolutely
:01:30. > :01:32.deplores it and we really can't understand why these people should
:01:33. > :01:37.take such terrible risks with their own lives and also
:01:38. > :01:42.endanger the lives of ordinary law-abiding motorists
:01:43. > :01:46.coming up the other way. This video was filmed
:01:47. > :01:48.in the Gorge and posted Already, a million
:01:49. > :01:55.people have seen it. Cheddar Gorge has always been
:01:56. > :01:58.a Mecca for extreme sports - So-called boy racers bring
:01:59. > :02:10.their cars here on a regular basis. And whether it's sport
:02:11. > :02:15.or antisocial behaviour plainly I spoke to someone from the trike
:02:16. > :02:21.drifting community who helped He didn't want to be interviewed
:02:22. > :02:26.on television but he did tell me that they had warning signs out
:02:27. > :02:30.on the day and they had spotters at either end of the Gorge,
:02:31. > :02:33.looking out for traffic. All sports, he went on,
:02:34. > :02:37.have inherent dangers. It is shocking because there,
:02:38. > :02:40.you've got an incident where one of the trikes have swerved in front
:02:41. > :02:44.of a car and that car has had But the police, who've
:02:45. > :02:48.now seen the footage, say potentially this
:02:49. > :02:51.is breaking the law. Certainly, based on what I'm viewing
:02:52. > :02:55.here, we will act on this information and we will start
:02:56. > :02:58.an investigation in relation to what's actually happened
:02:59. > :03:01.and been recorded. As for stopping it, ideas range
:03:02. > :03:06.from speed humps to cattle grids So far, nothing has been agreed.
:03:07. > :03:12.Clinton Rogers, BBC Unions claim rail travellers
:03:13. > :03:17.in the West aren't getting They're say the latest New Year fare
:03:18. > :03:23.increase set by the government Ministers argue the money
:03:24. > :03:29.will help pay for the biggest round of improvements to rail
:03:30. > :03:33.services in a century. This latest price hike affects 40%
:03:34. > :03:40.of all rail ticket sales - those controlled by the Government
:03:41. > :03:43.rather than the train operators, Most passengers we spoke to regard
:03:44. > :03:50.trains as overpriced. I don't use it too often,
:03:51. > :03:55.just for that reason. I think I'm lucky in
:03:56. > :03:57.that the particular line I'm on hasn't been as badly hit
:03:58. > :04:00.as some others. The option is take the bus
:04:01. > :04:18.and my commute is an extra hour. The rise means the walk-on
:04:19. > :04:20.cost of a return ticket That 150-mile round trip in a car
:04:21. > :04:31.would be just ?60 - 40p a mile. The train operators would say buying
:04:32. > :04:35.in advantage is cheaper. One passenger watchdog group says it
:04:36. > :04:38.highlights just what a bad deal The trains are 40 years old,
:04:39. > :04:45.the service is unreliable, one in four trains into
:04:46. > :04:48.the Great Western central area is running late at the moment,
:04:49. > :04:53.and it's the most overcrowded route in the country into Paddington,
:04:54. > :04:57.so people haven't had a fair deal, they've been asked to pay
:04:58. > :04:59.for the future without Electrification here in the West has
:05:00. > :05:03.been heavily delayed but Network Rail says signalling's
:05:04. > :05:07.been improved, new hybrid trains will be pulling into West Country
:05:08. > :05:10.stations this summer and there'll be two new services to London non-stop
:05:11. > :05:15.from Bristol Parkway. Now, with the New Year comes
:05:16. > :05:21.a new health kick for many after overindulging over Christmas,
:05:22. > :05:24.and it's the amount of sugar we're eating that's
:05:25. > :05:26.troubling health officials. They've teamed up with Jamie Oliver
:05:27. > :05:29.to encourage people in Bristol to reduce sugar in their diet
:05:30. > :05:32.because too much of it can lead to type 2 diabetes,
:05:33. > :05:38.as Dave Harvey reports. When he actually said the words,
:05:39. > :05:41."You now have diabetes, "you've gone over that line,
:05:42. > :05:48.you've got type 2 diabetes," I thought, right, this is it,
:05:49. > :05:50.I've got to do something I decided to give up
:05:51. > :06:04.sugar completely. It turned out to be a lot
:06:05. > :06:07.harder than she thought. Sugar is in all kinds
:06:08. > :06:10.of surprising places. I really like my coleslaw
:06:11. > :06:14.but that's got sugar in it. The big culprit for me initially
:06:15. > :06:18.was the fizzy drinks. This one is a lot healthier
:06:19. > :06:22.because it's a lot more natural, but it's still got just as much
:06:23. > :06:25.sugar in as Coke, so that And quitting sugar was
:06:26. > :06:30.just the half of it. After three months of all this,
:06:31. > :06:38.Becky went back to her GP. So you were in the range
:06:39. > :06:42.where your blood sugar would have been in the diabetic range and now
:06:43. > :06:45.it's gone back completely to normal. Approximately 10% of people
:06:46. > :06:47.within our city are at risk of diabetes, those are the ones
:06:48. > :06:50.that we really want Becky faced a clear choice -
:06:51. > :06:56.cut sugar or live with diabetes. But most of us don't and sweet
:06:57. > :07:01.treats are a daily temptation. So how will sugar
:07:02. > :07:06.smart change all that? They're starting with students,
:07:07. > :07:09.investigating surprise sugars. Becky's New Year challenge-
:07:10. > :07:19.to run a marathon. Well, a little earlier,
:07:20. > :07:36.I spoke to TV doctor Dawn Harper This is something that has crept up
:07:37. > :07:40.on us. That is probably why it is such a big problem. If something
:07:41. > :07:45.happens overnight, we are very aware of it but when it creeps up
:07:46. > :07:50.gradually, we are not so aware of it. We are a crisis point. Do you
:07:51. > :07:55.think something like a sugar Smart campaign will work or are you
:07:56. > :08:00.fighting against a strong tidier? We are fighting against a crazily
:08:01. > :08:05.strong tide but it is a tide we had to fight against. Sugar Smart is one
:08:06. > :08:10.element that will really help to engage the younger generation, and
:08:11. > :08:13.that is our future. If we can change lifestyles and our younger
:08:14. > :08:20.generation, the future is looking brighter. What is the worst case
:08:21. > :08:25.scenario? I have absolutely no doubt that if we don't do anything about
:08:26. > :08:31.what is an obesity crisis, an epidemic, than actually the NHS as
:08:32. > :08:35.we know it today will be bankrupt within my lifetime, not generations
:08:36. > :08:39.to come. This is something that could happen very soon. There is
:08:40. > :08:43.also a responsibility with the food also a responsibility with the food
:08:44. > :08:50.industry because a lot of parents find it hard to find healthy food. I
:08:51. > :08:51.think we all have responsibility and the food industry need to come on
:08:52. > :08:58.board. The government, education board. The government, education
:08:59. > :09:04.Department 's parents, we all have a role to play and we need to get the
:09:05. > :09:06.food industry on board. The sugar Smart campaign looks at sugar
:09:07. > :09:10.content in pre-packaged foods because a lot of people do not
:09:11. > :09:15.realise how much sugar they are consuming. It is not just about the
:09:16. > :09:22.sugar you at home. What advice you giving your patients? I spend a lot
:09:23. > :09:28.of my life talking about healthy lifestyles and diets. I really
:09:29. > :09:32.welcome the sugar Smart app and the food Smart app. They have both been
:09:33. > :09:40.developed by public up England and make it easy for people to
:09:41. > :09:44.understand just how much sugar, fat and salt they are consuming. Often,
:09:45. > :09:58.they are horrified when they look at it.
:09:59. > :10:04.As we head into tomorrow, it would be a day that will be less cold
:10:05. > :10:11.compared to the current one. There will be with thicker cloud moving
:10:12. > :10:15.southwards. That will introduce a sprinkling of light showery rain.
:10:16. > :10:19.Behind that, the skies were clear as the cold and marches in for
:10:20. > :10:25.Wednesday night. The night, the risk of frost will be much reduced.
:10:26. > :10:30.Temperatures broadly speaking above freezing. There could be one or two
:10:31. > :10:34.spots where we get Apache frost developing but they will tend to be
:10:35. > :10:41.be exceptions. Tomorrow morning, still bright start but quickly,
:10:42. > :10:45.cloud thickens up as weak cold front comes upwards. A few light outbreaks
:10:46. > :10:51.of showery rain drift down the West Somerset and beyond and behind that
:10:52. > :10:56.of the North, skies were clear. We will see the blues returning on the
:10:57. > :11:00.map, which signal another widespread frost developing. Tomorrow,
:11:01. > :11:02.temperatures getting as high as seven Celsius but by Thursday
:11:03. > :11:05.morning, and the widespread milder later in the week. That is it
:11:06. > :11:06.from me but coming up next is
