:00:57. > :01:00.Two University of Bristol students have told us they're being subjected
:01:01. > :01:02.to racial harassment on social media, including by another
:01:03. > :01:05.Timi Ariyoand Tami Sotire are speaking out after a video
:01:06. > :01:08.From the very beginning of Lee Madan's report,
:01:09. > :01:10.there is extreme racist and offensive language -
:01:11. > :01:13.we've decided to broadcast it to highlight what the students have
:01:14. > :01:19.They have called me "a dirty stinking coon".
:01:20. > :01:21.They have called me "an S-word flinging ape".
:01:22. > :01:23.They have called me "a gorilla who has thrown
:01:24. > :01:31.They have called me the N-word flat out.
:01:32. > :01:34.A lot of monkey jokes, like Bobo the ape, or Bubbles the monkey,
:01:35. > :01:36.after Michael Jackson, and just things like that.
:01:37. > :01:40.Timi Ariyo and Tami Sotire have spent the past year being targeted
:01:41. > :01:57.It led to this video being sent to hundreds of students on Snapchat.
:01:58. > :01:59.So many of my friends from Bristol and friends
:02:00. > :02:02.from home saw the video, and were like, wow, I've never
:02:03. > :02:04.seen anything like that, I didn't know it still happened
:02:05. > :02:10.The University of Bristol students were also sent racist comments
:02:11. > :02:12.on the instant messaging service What'sApp, as well as
:02:13. > :02:28.And I do think it is like the pack mentality, obviously.
:02:29. > :02:31.They feel like if they say it in a group, they're less likely
:02:32. > :02:34.for one person to get in trouble because they do it, like...
:02:35. > :02:37.They all comment together or they will all say the same things
:02:38. > :02:41.on a group chat or tweet the same thing, so it is hard to kind
:02:42. > :02:45.One of the bullies is also a student in the University of Bristol.
:02:46. > :02:47.They have not reported the bully into the University
:02:48. > :02:51.because they told me they do not know how to, and say they are not
:02:52. > :02:56.confident race issues would be taken seriously.
:02:57. > :02:58.During freshers', so many people were like, oh, my God,
:02:59. > :03:02.The university now need to take it on themselves to protect
:03:03. > :03:05.all of the students of every single race, every background,
:03:06. > :03:10.and make sure we are all treated fairly and equal.
:03:11. > :03:16.The university says it is saddened and shocked by what has happened and
:03:17. > :03:20.insists it takes a zero tolerance approach to racism and hate crime.
:03:21. > :03:25.They say they cannot investigate until a complaint is made. They can
:03:26. > :03:30.raise it in the first instance with their personal tutor. They can raise
:03:31. > :03:35.it with the warden and their halls of residence of that is where the
:03:36. > :03:39.incident took place, or if they felt more comfortable they can go to the
:03:40. > :03:42.students union which has a just ask service which is designed to be
:03:43. > :03:44.there for students to raise any issues and get guidance about how to
:03:45. > :03:44.take it forward. Timi and Tami hope that
:03:45. > :03:46.by speaking out now, they can help spread the message
:03:47. > :03:57.that racism will not be tolerated. Chante Joseph the chair
:03:58. > :03:59.of Bristol's Student Union's Council and the President of the University
:04:00. > :04:13.of Bristol's African How have other members of the group
:04:14. > :04:16.reacted to the abuse. A lot of people were not shocked but they
:04:17. > :04:21.find it disgusting and it allowed us to have an open conversation about
:04:22. > :04:26.our experiences, especially about racism, and a lot of people have
:04:27. > :04:31.experienced quite uncomfortable situations. Art lot of people might
:04:32. > :04:35.say, why wouldn't the students go to higher authority with the
:04:36. > :04:38.complaints? I feel like the students want to go and complain and they
:04:39. > :04:44.want to say something but they never know when it is important enough. We
:04:45. > :04:51.have a culture that demonises calling out behaviour and we cloak
:04:52. > :04:55.it as being too PC or too dramatic and saw a lot of people don't find
:04:56. > :05:01.these things relevant enough to raise even though they are
:05:02. > :05:05.ridiculous. They have actually said today that she fears reprisals, that
:05:06. > :05:11.is a great fear to live under, is that the case? And even in the
:05:12. > :05:14.interview they are saying they have lost friends because they have had
:05:15. > :05:19.to call out behaviour they deem abusive. You already feel ostracised
:05:20. > :05:22.as an ethnic minority and you don't want to do more to make yourself
:05:23. > :05:26.stand out by saying something Mitch you feel uncomfortable because it
:05:27. > :05:32.makes you feel more different. The university have said they have put
:05:33. > :05:36.certain mechanisms in place so why has this not happened? It goes back
:05:37. > :05:40.to this idea of culture. Even if the mechanisms are in place to report
:05:41. > :05:44.issues, if the environment tells you that your issues are not as
:05:45. > :05:48.important as others and that you shouldn't be wasting valuable
:05:49. > :05:51.resources, then no one is going to see anything. We need to have a more
:05:52. > :05:58.supportive environment which doesn't seem to exist. Do you think it will
:05:59. > :06:05.get better or worse? I don't think it will get any better until we
:06:06. > :06:09.unlearn this idea that it is too PC culture, it would get better until
:06:10. > :06:14.we do that. What do you think needs to happen? We need to have open and
:06:15. > :06:18.frank conversations about experiences that are unfiltered and
:06:19. > :06:22.allow people to have a space space to do so they feel more comfortable
:06:23. > :06:24.in knowing what they are experiencing is not wrong -- safe
:06:25. > :06:25.space. Police divers have joined the search
:06:26. > :06:28.for a missing 24-year-old who hasn't Deakon Wilkins from Worle was last
:06:29. > :06:32.seen at a nightclub in Bristol. Today his family have been handing
:06:33. > :06:35.out leaflets to shoppers, Police out searching today
:06:36. > :06:38.revealed Mr Wilkins hadn't used his bank account or phone
:06:39. > :06:48.since he disappeared. Police are investigating after
:06:49. > :06:51.a swan was shot with a crossbow Staff at Pitville Park found
:06:52. > :06:55.the injured bird this morning, which is now being cared
:06:56. > :06:57.for at Vale Wildlife Hospital. A fundraising page has
:06:58. > :07:00.been set up to help pay As the temperatures fall
:07:01. > :07:09.below freezing tonight, charities are warning the number
:07:10. > :07:11.of people sleeping rough For the first time some
:07:12. > :07:15.of the city's churches are offering Andrew Plant has been out
:07:16. > :07:23.at one of them tonight. The Mayor of Bristol lending
:07:24. > :07:31.a hand to volunteers These 12 beds will all be occupied
:07:32. > :07:38.by people who would otherwise In Bristol that's
:07:39. > :07:50.more than 75 people. People like this man who says they
:07:51. > :08:03.are ardent enough beds in night shelters with people renewed them
:08:04. > :08:06.often taught the way. If you're 19 or 20, sometimes you lose the bed
:08:07. > :08:09.and you stay outside all night. If you're lucky security people don't
:08:10. > :08:13.kick you out. There are a maximum of 65 beds
:08:14. > :08:15.available in shelters The charity St Mungo's says
:08:16. > :08:18.they're often all taken Leaving dozens more
:08:19. > :08:26.outside in the cold. What is different now is the local
:08:27. > :08:32.authorities and central government have less money to help pay for
:08:33. > :08:35.solutions so we need to think of creative and innovative ways to
:08:36. > :08:37.approach the problem and working together and coming up with those
:08:38. > :08:42.options is one of the ways. Bristol's Mayor started this
:08:43. > :08:44.scheme Persuading churches around the city centre To take
:08:45. > :08:46.turns giving 12 more rough sleepers a hot meal
:08:47. > :08:48.And a place to sleep But he knows far more are needed
:08:49. > :08:51.And it's the root cause of homelessness he says That he's
:08:52. > :09:00.determined to tackle. We are focused on getting houses
:09:01. > :09:03.built and unlocking the land with planning permission and making sure
:09:04. > :09:08.houses go for word on that land so we're looking at the bigger
:09:09. > :09:10.structural challenges but we also faced the immediate challenge
:09:11. > :09:14.tonight in Bristol of people sleeping on cold streets.
:09:15. > :09:17.This pilot will run for another 2 weeks
:09:18. > :09:20.Then Bristol will go back to having at most 65 emergency beds
:09:21. > :09:29.with at least double that number who need them.
:09:30. > :09:35.That's it from us tonight with more news on the BBC website and your
:09:36. > :09:42.local BBC radio stations. We're back with breakfast tomorrow from 6:30am
:09:43. > :09:47.for now the forecast. Thanks very much and good evening. Feels like
:09:48. > :09:51.the forecast is being repeated every night recently! For good reason
:09:52. > :09:54.because a very similar day of whether continuing tonight into
:09:55. > :10:01.tomorrow compared to that we have seen over the last 24-48 hours. The
:10:02. > :10:05.risk of fog, generally across more eastern parts. The risk of icy
:10:06. > :10:10.strictures on roads tomorrow, they are of sunshine and cloud and once
:10:11. > :10:13.again we have another Met Office warning in force for the risk of
:10:14. > :10:19.some quite dense fog forming, freezing fog and places, and also a
:10:20. > :10:23.warning for icy strictures on roads. More the eastern parts of the region
:10:24. > :10:27.at greater threat of any fog developing through tonight. The
:10:28. > :10:32.temperature reflecting that as we get below freezing across many parts
:10:33. > :10:37.of Wiltshire and early as doing likewise but equally one or two max
:10:38. > :10:42.spots around 1-2 C only of mix and match. By tomorrow morning, any fog
:10:43. > :10:46.will less and foreign banks of cloud which will linger as linger as well
:10:47. > :10:50.as fog for some part of the day and towards the West, the best chance of
:10:51. > :10:55.some early sunshine and we also have a bit of a mix of cloud and bright
:10:56. > :11:00.spells as we continue into the afternoon, the temperature tomorrow
