:00:00. > :00:11.Here on BBC One it's time for the news where you are.

:00:12. > :00:17.Warnings about the future of education.

:00:18. > :00:20.A Wiltshire head teacher is tells parents that cuts are on the way

:00:21. > :00:27.Two of our cities are told their economies are booming,

:00:28. > :00:39.And after a raw day today, change under way. We go up 10 degrees by

:00:40. > :00:40.this weekend but there are some rain. I have all the details later

:00:41. > :00:52.in the programme. A head teacher in Wiltshire

:00:53. > :00:56.is warning that his school is one of hundreds in the west that

:00:57. > :00:58.are losing out under changes Tim Gilson from Malmesbury School

:00:59. > :01:02.says classes will get bigger. But whilst some school are suffering

:01:03. > :01:04.with the new system - Our political editor Paul Barltrop

:01:05. > :01:09.sent this report from Wiltshire. After years of pleading for help,

:01:10. > :01:12.schools across the West hoped last month's announcement would bring

:01:13. > :01:14.them the help they needed. But after looking in detail

:01:15. > :01:16.at the figures, many For while nearly 900

:01:17. > :01:22.will see their funding increase, In fact, many will be worse off,

:01:23. > :01:27.including this one. Malmesbury School is

:01:28. > :01:33.officially outstanding. Praised by Ofsted, popular

:01:34. > :01:39.with parents but facing a financial hit that has prompted the head

:01:40. > :01:41.to go public. It is just important that

:01:42. > :01:43.everyone understands I felt it was only fair to say

:01:44. > :01:47.to parents that they will see class sizes increasing,

:01:48. > :01:50.older textbooks, they will see fewer resources and some

:01:51. > :01:53.things that we used to do, Today, parents digested the letter

:01:54. > :01:59.from the school warning of cuts. The Government's claim that

:02:00. > :02:01.an unfair funding system Apparently, we are in the bottom 10%

:02:02. > :02:07.in the country for funding. If there's something that should not

:02:08. > :02:14.be cut, it is education, especially a school like this,

:02:15. > :02:21.which is doing very, very well. Teachers, especially at this school,

:02:22. > :02:24.are so dedicated and passionate. I just think it is a real

:02:25. > :02:27.shame that what they do Hearing about maths teaching

:02:28. > :02:34.at a Gloucester primary school today, Labour's Shadow

:02:35. > :02:36.Education Secretary. Teachers here and everywhere feel

:02:37. > :02:39.that the Government has got its sums wrong and that schools face

:02:40. > :02:41.financial challenges, or worse. They can see the concerns

:02:42. > :02:49.schools have at the moment. The school here today are concerned

:02:50. > :02:52.that if they have any more money cut from their budget,

:02:53. > :02:55.it will impact on staffing levels and their ability to provide some

:02:56. > :02:58.of the great resources that I've Hoping to taste success,

:02:59. > :03:06.Schools Minister, Nick Gibb. He toured this secondary school

:03:07. > :03:10.in Swindon, a borough whose schools will,

:03:11. > :03:11.on average, gain. But he says the Government simply

:03:12. > :03:14.does not have the money In any national formula change,

:03:15. > :03:19.there some will be some We have capped any losing school

:03:20. > :03:25.to 1.5% per year, 3% in total. But it is a fairer system that

:03:26. > :03:28.reflects more accurately Despite the controversy,

:03:29. > :03:40.the changes will be in by 2020. Earlier, I spoke to David Waugh

:03:41. > :03:43.from the Association of School and College Leaders and asked him

:03:44. > :03:48.if the new system will be better. I think, overall, it will not be

:03:49. > :03:51.a fairer system because there is not There is still going to be a great

:03:52. > :03:59.discrepancy between those funded at the very lowest levels and those

:04:00. > :04:02.funded at the very highest levels. The new system will acknowledge

:04:03. > :04:04.deprivation and those But the issue within the new formula

:04:05. > :04:13.is it just simply does not provide sufficiency for those schools

:04:14. > :04:15.at the bottom end. Ther are concerns about

:04:16. > :04:18.larger class sizes. I think there are thousands of head

:04:19. > :04:26.teachers across the country now working out the calculations

:04:27. > :04:28.for the next financial Looking at increasing class sizes,

:04:29. > :04:36.taking subjects off the curriculum, You mentioned stopping subjects,

:04:37. > :04:39.taking subjects off. The bottom line is it

:04:40. > :04:43.will be the subjects which are most expensive to run.

:04:44. > :04:46.It will be art, technology, sport... Those subjects where the resources

:04:47. > :04:49.and class sizes are so much But, being a maths teacher,

:04:50. > :04:54.you must be quite pleased, then. We need a broad and

:04:55. > :05:03.balanced curriculum. We need to be preparing

:05:04. > :05:06.students for a wider world, where they are numerate,

:05:07. > :05:09.they are literate, but they are also And to be able to present

:05:10. > :05:13.and lead and get involved. We have to have a broad

:05:14. > :05:16.and balanced curriculum. That curriculum cannot be

:05:17. > :05:19.determined by sheer cost. What is the worst-case

:05:20. > :05:25.scenario here? Worst-case scenario, honestly,

:05:26. > :05:29.there will be many headteachers around the country now worried

:05:30. > :05:31.that they can't pay Head teachers around the country

:05:32. > :05:41.are telling me that they simply cannot open the doors in 2018-19

:05:42. > :05:44.because there just isn't enough Two University of Bristol students

:05:45. > :06:02.who've suffered racist abuse on social media today made

:06:03. > :06:04.an official complaint Timi Ariyo and Tami Sotire handed

:06:05. > :06:10.over a file of evidence showing how they've been targeted in offensive

:06:11. > :06:12.messages and a video by a group of young men,

:06:13. > :06:14.including another student Following the statement they made

:06:15. > :06:19.on the BBC the other day, I didn't But the university is showing a lot

:06:20. > :06:24.of support and I think some good We are looking to start

:06:25. > :06:28.disciplinary procedures quickly, with the individual who is one

:06:29. > :06:30.of our students. And we're also looking to work

:06:31. > :06:32.with other universities for other The University of Bristol also says

:06:33. > :06:37.it's also looking at ways to make it easier for students who are dealing

:06:38. > :06:40.with such abuse to come forward. A new report says the Bristol

:06:41. > :06:43.and Bath area is now leading the country

:06:44. > :06:45.with its booming economy. But that same report warns that many

:06:46. > :06:48.aren't feeling the benefits, because there's also been a sharp

:06:49. > :06:51.increase in the cost of house prices It's up, up and away

:06:52. > :07:03.for Bristol's booming economy. Other cities still lag below

:07:04. > :07:08.where they were before the financial crash but a report out today shows

:07:09. > :07:11.Bristol soaring above them all. Compared to the rest of the country,

:07:12. > :07:14.only London has outpaced it The really good news from a living

:07:15. > :07:19.standards perspective is the employment rate has kept

:07:20. > :07:21.rising and it is amongst While the economy hots

:07:22. > :07:25.up, the housing market Estate agents in the city have

:07:26. > :07:31.never had it so good. We've seen an increase in prices

:07:32. > :07:34.of around 10% as an average. In some small pockets such

:07:35. > :07:37.as Southville, we've seen That is a really steep rise for one

:07:38. > :07:43.year's worth of trading. Again, the supply

:07:44. > :07:46.outstrips the demand. New figures show the cost

:07:47. > :07:54.of renting across Bristol and Bath has soared -

:07:55. > :07:58.up ?100 a month in Rising house prices also means it's

:07:59. > :08:01.harder for young people In 2001, around seven in ten

:08:02. > :08:07.of 25 to 39-year-olds Last year, that figure had

:08:08. > :08:11.fallen to just over half. Angie.

:08:12. > :08:12.Hi, Robin, nice to meet you. For Angie Palmer - who lives

:08:13. > :08:18.in Bristol's Bedminster area - This through here

:08:19. > :08:22.is the dining room. Small two-bedroom terrace

:08:23. > :08:28.and it is ?925 a month in rent. She works as a graphic-designer

:08:29. > :08:32.but it's still not enough to cover Demand for properties

:08:33. > :08:43.on her street was so intense, she took this place without even

:08:44. > :08:50.seeing it first. I have a child, I work part-time,

:08:51. > :08:53.I have a good job, yet my wage It is baffling but that is

:08:54. > :09:01.the situation and I am not the only It is not ideal and it's difficult,

:09:02. > :09:06.but it's how it is. Politicians are all too aware

:09:07. > :09:09.of the scale of Bristol's housing shortage and the new metro mayor

:09:10. > :09:12.elected this May is being urged Without enough affordable

:09:13. > :09:15.housing in the city, Bristol's economic successes

:09:16. > :09:23.could be short-lived. The tale of a gorilla who was raised

:09:24. > :09:27.like a child in a Gloucestershire John Daniel was adopted by

:09:28. > :09:36.Alyce Cunningham from Uley in 1918. The animal was sold

:09:37. > :09:39.to an American when he became Now a collection of pictures

:09:40. > :09:45.of John Daniel have been published It is a fascinating story and you

:09:46. > :09:57.can see more on our Facebook page. There's more news on the BBC News

:09:58. > :10:02.website and of course on your local We're back tomorrow

:10:03. > :10:05.in Breakfast from 6.30. But, for now, I'll say goodnight

:10:06. > :10:08.and leave you with Sara Thornton, After the raw day of today,

:10:09. > :10:13.some might be pleased to see rain on the globe because it

:10:14. > :10:15.suggests a change. It is becoming more unsettled

:10:16. > :10:17.in the coming days. The weather in from the south-west

:10:18. > :10:20.brings with it some milder air And, yes, as I say,

:10:21. > :10:24.we're talking about rain. Generally dry through

:10:25. > :10:26.the night tonight. Only a couple of flurries here

:10:27. > :10:29.and there toward the north-east. But it is fog that we will be

:10:30. > :10:32.watching for tomorrow morning and obviously frost,

:10:33. > :10:33.particularly out Temperatures just that slight

:10:34. > :10:36.bit milder the further It is a pretty dry,

:10:37. > :10:39.benign start to tomorrow. A bit of brightness at first

:10:40. > :10:41.but cloud thickening up after lunchtime, rain moving

:10:42. > :10:43.in from mid-afternoon onwards. That is with us through the evening

:10:44. > :10:46.and into the early hours The temperatures rising

:10:47. > :10:50.through the day at seven or eight Celsius as we finish out Friday,

:10:51. > :10:52.lifting all the time It clears first thing

:10:53. > :10:55.on Saturday morning. Saturday is generally dry,

:10:56. > :10:57.maybe a couple of showers around. But with rain, here's

:10:58. > :11:04.Helen with more. weekend. It's swings and

:11:05. > :11:11.roundabouts, higher temperatures but some rain as well.

:11:12. > :11:18.Good evening. It's been dry so far this January but as it draws to a

:11:19. > :11:24.close it looks like we will see some rain at last. It's been an

:11:25. > :11:25.interesting today a bitterly cold in Norfolk, way we kept the grey cloud
