:00:07. > :00:15.People from the region caught up in the london attacks,

:00:16. > :00:32.I was just walking across the bridge and a bus stop and everybody was

:00:33. > :00:35.screaming. Everybody came off the bus and they were upset.

:00:36. > :00:38.And we'll also find out how the police here are

:00:39. > :00:45.Many of the people from the West who were caught up in the terror

:00:46. > :00:47.attacks are finally on their way home tonight.

:00:48. > :00:49.Local school children were among those who were put into lockdown

:00:50. > :00:53.Teachers from St John St Francis Church School

:00:54. > :00:55.in Bridgwater have said they were they were singing songs

:00:56. > :00:58.with the children inside parliament as a distraction from the events.

:00:59. > :01:01.And a group of ten and 11 years old from Hotwells Primary

:01:02. > :01:03.School Bristol were also there when the terror

:01:04. > :01:07.Well, it's been a very stressful parents of children

:01:08. > :01:12.Year six have been on a school trip to Westminster.

:01:13. > :01:16.And earlier this afternoon, I spoke to a member of staff who works here.

:01:17. > :01:20.When we came in all the teachers were on edge, you could tell.

:01:21. > :01:22.And when they were talking, you could hear something

:01:23. > :01:27.The caretaker said that year six were on a London trip.

:01:28. > :01:36.We pieced it altogether and realised that there was something going on.

:01:37. > :01:38.Now, later today, the head teacher put out a statement

:01:39. > :01:41.from Hotwells School, saying that although the children

:01:42. > :01:43.were near the scene, they weren't directly caught up

:01:44. > :01:47.in it, that they followed an emergency procedure

:01:48. > :01:51.the children were safely put on board a coach.

:01:52. > :01:54.Now, although all the children are safe, they are not

:01:55. > :01:59.aware of what happened today in Westminster.

:02:00. > :02:02.Well, the children from both schools are now heading back home tonight.

:02:03. > :02:05.Our reporter Robin Markwell has been catching up with other people

:02:06. > :02:09.from across the West who were caught up in the attack.

:02:10. > :02:14.On Westminster Bridge, a car rammed into the crowds,

:02:15. > :02:17.then a man armed with a knife forced his way

:02:18. > :02:22.Journalists and politicians from the West found

:02:23. > :02:25.themselves in the middle of the unfolding drama.

:02:26. > :02:28.We'd heard a bang, me and my colleagues in room 12

:02:29. > :02:33.in Parliament were looking to see what that was, we suddenly saw

:02:34. > :02:37.a policeman kind of being pushed into New Palace Yard.

:02:38. > :02:40.It was strange because normally nobody is allowed in there apart

:02:41. > :02:44.from MPs and those with passes, however, suddenly, he got

:02:45. > :02:50.I now understand he had a knife in his hand.

:02:51. > :02:55.I then saw a policeman approached him, all dressed in black,

:02:56. > :03:05.They were told to stay inside their offices.

:03:06. > :03:08.Among those caught up in the lockdown, was the Cotswold MP

:03:09. > :03:13.I'm particularly concerned about my staff, who witnessed the whole

:03:14. > :03:25.-- Of course, we all immediately after it happened, informed our

:03:26. > :03:30.At the moment, we, a number of staff and members

:03:31. > :03:32.of Parliament are locked in, right in the middle of Parliament.

:03:33. > :03:34.We don't know when we will be allowed out.

:03:35. > :03:36.The Bristol West MP Thangam Debbonaire took

:03:37. > :03:38.to Twitter to describe the frightening scenes outside.

:03:39. > :03:40.Salisbury MP John Glenn sent his thoughts and prayers

:03:41. > :03:43.to the injured and the Wells MP James Heappey praised the

:03:44. > :03:52.A children's author from mid-summer Norton happened to be

:03:53. > :03:54.on Westminster Bridge at the time of the attack.

:03:55. > :03:58.I was just walking across the bridge and suddenly a bus stopped

:03:59. > :04:02.People came off the bus and they seemed very upset.

:04:03. > :04:06.And then I saw what appeared to be a trainer by the side of the road

:04:07. > :04:09.and then, on the other side of the road, there was a body

:04:10. > :04:13.and when I looked further up there was another body and,

:04:14. > :04:15.then, when I looked over the side of the bridge,

:04:16. > :04:18.there appeared to be a body in the water as well.

:04:19. > :04:20.The Prime Minister has convened an emergency meeting.

:04:21. > :04:24.A counterterrorism enquiry is already underway but, for now,

:04:25. > :04:28.people are still coming to terms with the shocking events

:04:29. > :04:36.The Wells MP James Heappey had been waiting to vote behind

:04:37. > :04:39.the Prime Minister when she was told about the attack.

:04:40. > :04:45.He spoke to us in our 6.30pm programme from xx

:04:46. > :04:48.He spoke to us in our 6.30pm programme from London

:04:49. > :04:53.where he was in lockdown with other politicians.

:04:54. > :05:00.I'm fine. It was a long afternoon and evening in which House of

:05:01. > :05:04.Commons but we were there for our own safety and the house authorities

:05:05. > :05:09.were executing a plan that they have developed well and rehearsed for and

:05:10. > :05:13.so we were safe. My staff are very shaken. My hope overlooks Parliament

:05:14. > :05:17.Square and they were drawn to the window by keeping the car crash into

:05:18. > :05:22.the real and sadly that meant they were watching as the shooting

:05:23. > :05:25.happened. And, when I left them this evening, they had to go to

:05:26. > :05:30.Westminster Abbey to give evidence to the police and they were pretty

:05:31. > :05:34.shaken up. This is really fear that has become reality here. It must be

:05:35. > :05:42.hard to grasp. Yes, I think that it is hard to grasp. I sort of always

:05:43. > :05:45.was aware of that that area and a new Palace yard was quite

:05:46. > :05:49.vulnerable, that when the division bell rang, lots of MPs would be

:05:50. > :05:55.making their way from their offices to the chamber. I don't think the

:05:56. > :05:58.attack today was attacking a division but it was just a

:05:59. > :06:03.coincidence that lots of MPs were underway to vote at the time of the

:06:04. > :06:06.attack. It brings home to you how many police and security guards are

:06:07. > :06:12.there at work in the Palace at Westminster and they do an amazing

:06:13. > :06:16.job. One of them gave an amazing -- gave their lives today. Yet at the

:06:17. > :06:19.time of the attack you were behind the Prime Minister, when she was

:06:20. > :06:23.told the news. I was in the voting lobby and she was told the news

:06:24. > :06:28.Nvidia matter-of-fact way. I wasn't privy to the exact words that

:06:29. > :06:33.reduced. Someone came up to her and spoke to her and she was spoken --

:06:34. > :06:37.taken away. I was able to put one and one together soon afterwards

:06:38. > :06:38.when I heard that she had been taken from the Parliamentary estate in a

:06:39. > :06:56.hurry and that we were under attack.

:06:57. > :06:59.Parliament will sit again tomorrow. How do you feel about that? I think

:07:00. > :07:02.that is really important. We had to take a long walk back to the hotel I

:07:03. > :07:04.stayed in this evening because of other cordons and I had a long walk

:07:05. > :07:07.through central London to think about things. What happened today

:07:08. > :07:10.was not an attack on the bricks and mortar of Westminster or even our

:07:11. > :07:12.MPs, it was an attack on our democracy. What is amazing is that a

:07:13. > :07:15.policeman stood has can to protect ours and to pick -- to protect

:07:16. > :07:20.Parliament and our democracy. Wonder what -- what we must do to honour

:07:21. > :07:23.his life is to go to work tomorrow and to continue to participate in

:07:24. > :07:26.it. I will be in the gym first thing tomorrow morning and I suspect a lot

:07:27. > :07:30.of colleagues will fuel the same way. What we must do is demonstrate

:07:31. > :07:33.that these people who are motivated by the Sikh ideologies of

:07:34. > :07:38.international terrorism don't win and that we continue to do the jobs

:07:39. > :07:41.that we are elected to do and show that our democracy is much stronger

:07:42. > :07:41.than any attack by an idiot like this.

:07:42. > :07:43.Our home affairs correspondent Charlotte Callen is here.

:07:44. > :07:46.What been the response here to the attacks in the west?

:07:47. > :07:52.From the people that I have spoken to today, there is an overwhelming

:07:53. > :07:57.sense that although we may be 100 miles away, that we have never felt

:07:58. > :08:00.closer to our capital city. Of course, many people is your commute

:08:01. > :08:04.to London either I need daily or weekly basis for work. We have at

:08:05. > :08:08.school children caught up in this incident. There have been worried

:08:09. > :08:12.family members here desperate to find their family members are safe

:08:13. > :08:15.and well. There has been great sympathy and sadness from people

:08:16. > :08:21.here to people and London. Of course, there's also been a visible

:08:22. > :08:24.impact. Extra staff and British Transport Police patrolling our main

:08:25. > :08:27.train station to reassure the public.

:08:28. > :08:29.What about the response from the police forces?

:08:30. > :08:42.I have spoken to all of them and they are monitoring the situation.

:08:43. > :08:46.The most important thing to remember, we have intelligence

:08:47. > :08:50.services -- intelligence services working here on a daily basis to

:08:51. > :08:54.keep us safe. That happens across the whole country and it remains the

:08:55. > :08:57.same. There has been a great expression of sadness from the

:08:58. > :09:01.police year to the police in London for that officer that was stabbed

:09:02. > :09:05.and killed. That is reflected by the Chief Constable of Wiltshire Police

:09:06. > :09:06.who said that they stand shoulder to shoulder with their colleagues in

:09:07. > :09:13.London. Lets take look at some of our other

:09:14. > :09:16.news tonight and the parents of a seven year old boy who died

:09:17. > :09:19.at Bristol Children's Hospital after a heart operation, have been

:09:20. > :09:21.awarded ?100,000 in compensation. Luke Jenkins was moved out

:09:22. > :09:23.of intensive care just days after his operation

:09:24. > :09:26.because of a lack of beds. The Health Service Ombudsman says

:09:27. > :09:28.there were "missed opportunities" and that Luke's parents will never

:09:29. > :09:31.know if better care would The hospital says improvements have

:09:32. > :09:35.been put in place since and failings Well, you can catch up

:09:36. > :09:38.with the rest of the days news And there's continuing coverage

:09:39. > :09:42.on the London attacks We're back tomorrow and I'll

:09:43. > :09:55.leave you now with Ian Good evening. The forecast for

:09:56. > :09:58.tomorrow, in some quite -- senses their pockets the conditions he saw

:09:59. > :10:03.this morning, in terms of wet weather being genuinely -- generally

:10:04. > :10:08.confined to one area of the region. It will be turning when they are as

:10:09. > :10:11.the deer weaves on. -- day wears on. It is possible that those in the

:10:12. > :10:16.South will see further patchy outbreaks of rain continuing through

:10:17. > :10:19.the afternoon and into the evening. For the time being, and a filament

:10:20. > :10:26.of clear sky, temperatures dropping away. Could be patches for current

:10:27. > :10:28.and frost. Getting them to one or two Celsius fairly wiggly. Rain

:10:29. > :10:31.continuing through the afternoon and into the evening. For the time

:10:32. > :10:33.being, under a filament of clear sky, temperatures dropping away.

:10:34. > :10:38.Could be patches for current and frost. Getting them to one or two

:10:39. > :10:44.Celsius fairly wiggly. Read more of origin are at it as some patchy

:10:45. > :10:48.rain. The northern extent open to that. Further northwards, the better

:10:49. > :10:54.chance of retaining dryer where Friday afternoon. As I mentioned, it

:10:55. > :10:58.will be turning quite easy or Wendy and temperatures, 10 Celsius, but

:10:59. > :10:59.that wind-chill will add more. That will improve

:11:00. > :11:16.It certainly was a pretty wet day across parts of the country, lots of

:11:17. > :11:17.downpours around. This is a picture from Kent, not particularly nice.
